I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

babyand · 22/11/2016 19:28

Lucinda I can't wait till I'm not the end off the list!! Although that would mean some poor soul has been greeted with this misery!

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/11/2016 20:28

LucindaE · 23/11/2016 10:21

Oh dear, ICanTuckMyBoobs rice is awful. much sympathy.
Blondes Oh dear, too - I do hope this is a temporary glitch; so disappointing; and that is such a shame about that meal of sausage and beans; I do hope it doesn't put you off.
I wonder if Squeezypeasy is out?
How is everybody doing today?

Hi user. I can't remember exactly when I started coming off the pills: I think I tried to reduce for the first time at about 16 weeks and it wasn't successful (I felt awful!), but then tried again a week later, and dropped them altogether by about 20 weeks. I have been feeling rough in the evenings again and am thinking about going back to 1 cyclizine a day to see if it helps. So far I am coping so I haven't gone back there, but if work gets busier or if I get my DD's cold I may have to.

So sorry to people still puking. Hang in there.

Sneezypeasy · 23/11/2016 11:38

Thanks Lucinda, I managed to get the ketones down yesterday afternoon, so they let me come home yesterday evening with a prescription of ondansetron and prochlorperazine.

I slept 12 hours last night. Still exhausted and nauseous but at least home and hydrated.

Word of advice for everyone - find out what to do if your condition deteriorates before it does. I didn't think it would get that bad and had no idea who to contact.

The midwife on the ward said I could have phoned maternity assessment, told them my ketones and they would have asked me to come straight in (they only ask people to go to GP first for ketones reading, for those of us measuring ourselves we can just call them).

Instead I waited until "office hours", called my GP, waited, called them again (told they will call when they are free), waited called again saying I was getting worse and 7 hours after I first called my GP called back. He immediately made an emergency appointment to see him as I needed to go to hospital. Instead of phoning maternity hospital he phoned on call gynaecologist and wrote a letter and sent me to a&e. I spent an hour in a&e, nurse found me throwing up in toilets and decided to speed up my admission and sent me to the maternity assessment (where I should have been in first place). They got me on drip as quickly as possible, then got me onto ward, but was 12 hours after I sought medical advice.

So please everyone, if it's bad enough to need medication, it could get worse, so find out what you need to do before your ketones rise (and hope you won't need it).

It wasn't in my maternity notes or in the leaflet that says what to do if something goes wrong in pregnancy, my GP receptionist didn't know, my GP didn't know. Once I am better I will write to GP about this. I wish I had asked midwife at booking.

SecondSunrise · 23/11/2016 12:17

Hello I wonder if I can join your ranks? I'm just over six weeks (so due mid July?) and the vomit has caught up with me. This is my fifth pregnancy (but only one DC) and I've had HG in any that made it over 6 weeks. I've started the Stemetil but not sure if it's sufficient.

Sneezy that sounds awful. I'm glad you have got some relief and are back home.

MotherofPearl · 23/11/2016 12:30

Welcome Sunrise, although sorry to hear you've had a tough time. If the stemetil isn't working, do you have a supportive GP who would be willing to prescribe something else for you to try?
Sneezy, glad you are home and with the good stuff! Ondansetron is not a miracle cure but a game changer for many women. Do watch out for the horrific constipation though. That's excellent advice about finding out where to go ahead of time, should you have high ketones. I have an EPU near to me that women can self-refer to for rehydration and IV meds, and generally EPUs are an excellent option for HG treatment if you have one near to you.

fourcorneredcircle · 23/11/2016 12:44

Hello again everyone :)

Sorry to hear you've been so bad sneezy - but I think it will be really positive to let GP know about systems. They can't know everything about every illness and department after all :)

I've had a reasonable couple of days after bad weekend and Monday. Didn't throw up yesterday at all, and today I've retched up saliva a couple of time but no stomach emptying. Hope I'm turning a corner as I head towards week 12 :)

I got gingered by the midwives this morning though... was polite but said no, I think I'll continue with the drugs now. DH didn't help when he said "oh yes, you drank ginger beer and ate ginger biscuits for the first week, do you want to try them again" (conveniently forgetting that they made no difference and that I was particularly unimpressed with ginger beer coming out of my nose mid vomit). I was a bit less polite with DH, poor bloke!

MotherofPearl · 23/11/2016 12:51

Four, great to hear you've had a few better days; it's often a sign of improvements to come i.e. things can still be up and down but one or two good days in a row often lead to more. Boo hiss to the gingering! Honestly, it's worse than useless. And ginger beer out of your nose sounds really painful.

LightTripper · 23/11/2016 14:38

Aaarghh.... I don't think I've touched ginger since my DD was born. The idea that it is the solution!!! Aaaarrrgghhh...

Welcome Sunrise - sorry you are sick again and so many times - that must be really hard to take. I was also very sick when I had a MMC (luckily for me I only had one, and one normal MC where I wasn't sick) and it makes it so hard - particularly after you find out you have MC but are still sick.

I was very lucky that because of my MCs my GP arranged an early reassurance scan for me (at about 8 weeks I think) so I could minimise the amount of sickness I had to go through if the pregnancy wasn't a goer. Luckily all was well and I am now at 27 weeks or something like that, but it made those early weeks so much easier to handle knowing there was a good chance of viability: it may be worth seeing if yours can do the same?

And yes, I would definitely ask about other drugs. Quite a few of us here have had to try more than one (either instead of the first thing tried or in combination). I was much better this time at going to see my GP early and moving on quickly from drugs if they didn't work (or didn't keep up with the level of sickness) and I think it made a big difference.

CastleFeck · 23/11/2016 14:44

Welcome secondsunrise. Sorry you have found your self among the grey and pukey ranks of this thread. Hoping you feel better soon.

Great news your on the mend sneezy but sorry it took 12 hours to get anywhere.

Hi everyone else hope you're hVing better days and time is going quickly for you all.
19weeks today for me, so close to the 20week mark now when all will be well and I shall skip happy and glowing through mothercare

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/11/2016 15:35

Tripper lucky joy actually coming off tablets. Every time i reduce to 2 I'm sick

Sneezy. You have had a bad time. Always go to:ring maternity hotline at hospital if that dehydrated

Sunrise. Welcome and sorry for mc but yah for dc but boo for hg. If had previously you are likely to have it again ...,,

Four - wish mw would shut up about bloody ginger !!!

Castle / at 20w I did purchase a buggy and nursery furniture

Love my buggy. Got ex deal on it and with basinett and car seat

Easy to fold and put up 😁

Lucinda. Quite happy to eat sausage beans and mash again :)

Sickness has hit corner again. Grrrrrr. Just as I think it's better it's bad

Last night. This morning and few hours ago. Ahhhhhhhh

LucindaE · 23/11/2016 19:00

SecondSunrise Welcome. I am sorry you are suffering. Sorry too, to hear of your MC's. They are very hard to bear. LightTripper's advice about a reassurance scan sounds a great idea. Great advice from others about meds and everyone is very friendly here.
Castlefeck Lol about grey and pukey thread. Here's hoping you are dancing through Mothercare at twenty weeks!
Blondes Sorry about returned sickness. I do hope it is a hormonal surge. Glad you can face bangers and mash again.
Sneezypeasy I'm glad you are feeling better and that is excellent advice about how to skip being kept waiting.
Good advice too, about EPU's from MotherofPearl.
LightTripper I am sorry to hear about your mc's. They make one feel anxious and spoil things - though Hyperemesis does a good job of that on its own!
fourcorneredcircle So glad you feel a bit better. Much sympathy over gingering -for goodness sake, when they know you're on meds!
Waves to all. Watch me cross post with someone.

FFS sick again and exercist style 🙄😳

Tho better now then hrs time. New job tonight. Ickle 3day bubs 😍👶🏼😍

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 23/11/2016 21:14

Jesus Christ it's like Groundhog Day here.

Lying in bed, can't get comfortable, just waiting to vomit so I can go to sleep before I get up tomorrow and do it all over again.

Has anyone found cyclizine stopped working?

Think I'm 12 weeks ( and I'll fight the sonographer on Friday if she says any different) and the last week I'm being sick loads.

I can manage between voms, but only when I'm at work, must be the distraction.

Should I try something else or better the devil you know?

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/11/2016 22:32

I was bad till 14w then saw an improvement. And again at 20w

Tho gone downhill again Recently

I don't think it's the cyczline not working just hormone surges as def better on it

MotherofPearl · 23/11/2016 22:35

Boobs, I always think it's worth pursuing different meds, to see if it makes a difference. I soldiered on with cyclizine in my 2nd pg and really wish I'd pushed for Ondansetron, which I did in my 3rd pg. It really helped. Why suffer needlessly when there are possible solutions available (although none is perfect, sadly). Groundhog Day is a good description of the grinding monotony of HG.
Boobs, sorry that you're having such a bad relapse. Really not fair at 22 weeks. Hope the 3 day old baby sleeps well for you tonight.
Castle, well done on getting to 19 weeks. You must have your 20 week scan coming up soon.
Some people have been quiet, like Lucy, LH and Robber. Hope it's a sign they're feeling better.
I'm dozing off here next to DD2, night all.

babyand · 24/11/2016 09:35

Groundhog Day really is the best way of explaining it!!

CastleFeck · 24/11/2016 13:10

Bugger, hope it's just a blip Blondes.

Hi everyone else. Attempting my first meal out tonight. Spending all day in bed to prepare!

herewegoagain4749 · 24/11/2016 13:25

ICanTuck Cyclizine stopped working for me recently, switched to Prochlorperazine, which isn't working much yet, and I had to battle with Gzp to get anything!! Quite soul destroying needing to fight for help 😒.

17 weeks now and have had a couple of non-consecutive days of no vomiting and less nausea...for those whose HG has gone, does it tend to go gradually or all of a sudden? I've tricked myself on these good days thinking it's over, then I do too much get exhausted and it comes back with a vengeance!

But can sometimes drink very cold tap water now, which has to be a good sign?!

LightTripper · 24/11/2016 14:35

It definitely does vary with how tired you are herewego. I was feeling much better last week, then went on a business trip to Amsterdam and although it wasn't that tiring there was a fair bit of walking and standing about etc. and I've been significantly worse since then. I think I'm starting to improve a bit again ... it's just a good lesson not to overdo it I guess.

Hopefully now you've started to improve you will continue to, but it might be a bit of a bumpy road and you may plateau at some point.
