I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

What's the earliest anyone has taken any medication for sickness? X

fourcorneredcircle · 08/11/2016 11:39

Thanks for more suggestions everyone... on my way to see MW now. Shock a new experience... have prepared sample of wee as it's not been tested for keytones for a while. Looks like it could glow in the dark!

MotherofPearl · 08/11/2016 11:43

Lauren, when it comes to meds, it's really a case of the earlier the better. HG typically starts earlier than normal MS; some women get the sickness before they even know they're pg. How far along are you? Some women embarking on 2nd or subsequent HG pregnancies take cyclizine the second they suspect they're pg, as a pre-emptive measure. Once the vomiting takes hold it can be hard to break the cycle.
South, here's a link to fill you in on all the MN 'codes'! Wink

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/11/2016 13:08

I shouldn't laugh about the the cat poo in bath. But I did 😬😇

Shut the door next time

Being a maternity nurse I have seen links with speech delay and gord and reflux and cmpa as child doesn't learn to use mouth and tongue to eat so can't pronounce words

Not sure about link with hg and sickness. The two people I know in the wider friend group both suffered dreadfully from hg and in and out of hospital with no 1. Both had no 2 and had hg even worse if possible - neither will be having no 3 tho both wanted 4dc

Point being both their children are total chatter boxes - no delay at all in their speech of all 4 children

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/11/2016 13:11

Ps all good here. Had mini fry up. Bacon and fried eggs on toast with butter and ketchup. Wow. One of the best meals I have ever had !!!

Sorry to brag 😷😷😷

20w this thur. Really hope coming to end of sickness. Still on 3 cyczline a day as when go to 2 im sick again

Laurendx · 08/11/2016 13:21

I've been on them since 6 weeks i thought they were safe to take as the dr prescribed them but now I'm worried about adverse affects from taking them so early on x

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/11/2016 13:54

THey are safe. I've been on max dose since 8w and now almost 20

Please don't worry

fourcorneredcircle · 08/11/2016 13:58

MWs were bonkers... (practise has two that split appointments). I wasn't expecting it to be so long an appt either. Thought it was going to just be weigh, check I don't smoke, see you in four weeks! Best part was DH came, asked them what he should do because I don't really eat much. They both told him to give up trying, anything I eat is fine and stop trying to get me to eat more. Phew, perhaps he'll stop sticking "tempting" food under my nose now (with predictable retching results!). No one mentioned ginger although they did ask if I'd tried travel bands. Just settling down with my cat and Netflix...

LightTripper · 08/11/2016 14:17

Hi Lauren: try not to worry, the ones they prescribe in the UK early on have all been taken for years and years, so there are good studies to suggest no harmful effects on baby. Which one are you on?

If you haven't looked the Pregnancy Sickness Support website is really good and has some nice short summaries of all the main drugs and what evidence there is on them.

LHReturns · 08/11/2016 14:46

Hello all!

Blondes you are definitely getting there aren't you! Brag away - you deserve it.

I haven't been sick in two days - and crippling afternoon nausea is shortening on duration.

Lauren I have been on steroids since 6 weeks and added Ondansetron at 8 weeks. No one ever said I needed to wait a certain period of time to try either and I think I am on both the strongest options (prescribed privately).

Wishing you all the best.

fourcorneredcircle · 08/11/2016 14:52

That's great news LH, I hope you continue to feel better everyday - just think you might soon be eating fry ups like blondes!!! Grin so happy for you both.

I'm bringing up the rear party, slowly. Emphasis on brining up... fancied some tomato soup. Mistake. I'll stick to toast a while longer.

LHReturns · 08/11/2016 14:59

Thank you Four! My big problem is my zero social confidence. I too had a very big event with tomato soup. It is hard because cooked tomatoes are one of my pregnancy cravings (as was same with last one) but they do not go down well.

Four give it another week - I am keen to see if you also start to make a small turn.

I am currently sitting having my roots done (very very overdue). I cannot believe I am out...keep waiting to embarrass myself...avoiding looking in mirror as I am such a hag.

Starting to get tense awaiting Harmony test results. Should get them a week on Thursday when I also have the nuchal scan.

Hugs (gentle non squeezy ones) and waves to all of you.

NerrSnerr · 08/11/2016 15:04

Hello everyone. Sorry to see people still suffering. I am now back on Cyclazine and ranitidine but not getting a huge amount of respite from throwing up. I have been off work for what feels like an age (I daren't work out how many weeks it's been) and am getting worried that the GPs are going to make me go back it's been so long (I know that's irrational). I am doing a lot of knitting which keeps my mind off the nausea. I am now 17 weeks and I am really worried it's going to be like this the whole pregnancy. If I need to go out somewhere I take PRN stemetil on top of the cyclazine but that renders me loopy and I can't drive but it stops the sickness. I have a consultant appointment on Thursday as my daughter was an emergency c section so he may have some pearls of wisdom.

Lauren I think I was first prescribed tablets when about 6 weeks this pregnancy. They are deemed to be safe at any time.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/11/2016 17:41

Sorry. You lot must hate me 😂 At the moment but I'm trying to bring hope to uour life's

I keep saying 14w onwards was better tho was still sick daily but always in evening. Fine all day

16/17w def improvement. Still have odd sick days but generally ok 'touches head'

I need my roots done again. Think hair does grow quicker. Going to try and leave till end of month as then start Xmas parties (with my trusty coop bag).

And I will be sober !!!! Can't rem a sober Xmas ...... prob was when I was 14/16yrs so 27yrs ago. Gulps !!!

Yes I can't handle tom soup. Chicken cuppa soup I can. But not the trusty red fruit

Off to work. Lets see what my baby is doing tonight. Usually has df and wakes 3/4am for a feed

CastleFeck · 08/11/2016 20:05

Lh so pleased to hear you're slowly seeing some improvement. Well done on braving the hairdressers. I look like a witchy hag, I'm too scared to make an appointment incase the strong smells make me vom.

Four glad the midwives were reasonably supportive and didn't suggest ginger. I wore travel bands for weeks and weeks just incase but they did bugger all.

Can't remenber who asked but I started drugs at 6 weeks pg, you don't need to wait.

Nerr we are at v similar stages I found knitting helped with nausea too, a good distraction. Sorry you're still feeling bad though.

Blondes food sounds v nice. I've not had any super noodles today, first time in 6 weeks. Had real soup too not 'cup a'.

So got the hospital tomorrow for my first consultant appointment. Probably going to entail showing my battle worn perineum to all and sundry.

Southlondon321 · 08/11/2016 20:24

MN codes are like another language!!!
I started anti-sickness at 6 weeks but could have done with them earlier. The sickness was the reason I did a preg test in the first place!!!
Having lots of work stress at the moment and going into London centre to meet some old colleagues I haven't seen for 2 years! I've just text to ask if they will meet near the station I go into so I don't have to go on the tube. I've done tube whilst suffering sickness but it was awful and went in ahead of rush hour.
Had to explain to commute colleague/friend that although early pregnancy and most people want to hide it I wear my 'baby on board' badge more as a public service announcement in case all goes wrong!

Southlondon321 · 08/11/2016 20:26

Cat and I friends again today ... bloody cat poo. Makes all sickness so much worse!!!

Also..... Lloyds Pharmacy selling bio oil at half price!

LucindaE · 08/11/2016 21:00

SouthLondon Mother of Pearl and others - I took a look at that, and I like that 'Auntie Flo' - I hadn't heard of that one! How absurd!
fourcorneredcircle Sorry about the fate of the tomato soup. A lot of people don't get relief till around twenty weeks, so don't despair...
lighttripper Good advice.
LRReturns Sympathy about tension over Harmony results. Glad you feel a lot better.
Nerrsnerr I am sorry you feel foul. Can they not offer other drugs as these aren't helping a lot? I hope the consultant can suggest something.
Lauren You've had such great advice about the safety of drugs, I certainly don't need to add any.

blondes Interesting. Congratulations on fry up!
As ever, apologies if I've rudely overlooked anyone.

RobberBride · 08/11/2016 21:26

Hi everyone (big wave to Blondes and LH), may I join?

I feel slightly fraudulent as I very rarely vomit, but I've had severe nausea all day every day since 6+0. Today I'm 11+1 and it is showing no signs of easing. I have headaches most days, I can't exercise, my concentration and sleep are all over the place, I basically just work (ineffectually) in the day and then come home and lie down and then spend the weekend on the sofa or asleep. My GP won't give me anything because I'm not vomiting - she says to hang on for another week and it will magically go away Hmm.

I'm aware that all of the ladies on this thread are going through much worse, but I wondered if I could hang out here and feel crap with you all?

LHReturns · 08/11/2016 21:48

Finally Robber - we have been WAITING for you here!!!

Welcome. So sorry you aren't yet feeling any improvement. No drugs - GAWD.

While ok you aren't vomiting much, how are you doing with food and liquids during such severe nausea?

Southlondon321 · 08/11/2016 22:21

Robber, my life is the same if yours ... turn up to work and sit in the seat for 8 hours and then go home to sit in bed... Sleep all weekend!
So sorry you are feeling so awful. I'm sure the medication can help with nausea generally, some docs are weird, but I am the furthest from a medical person so don't know the rules.

JustHavinABreak · 08/11/2016 23:06

Thank you so much for all your support ladies. I have had 36 hours of IV fluids and starting to feel human again! Hopefully I'll be discharged in the morning.

Southlondon321 · 09/11/2016 07:53

I'm going to be late for work because my cat did a poo! How is my life controlled by cat poo?!?

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/11/2016 08:05

Waves to robber

Wondered when you were joining us

Nausea can be just as bad. The constant hangover feeling is how I describe it

Ask gp again. So relived I had a nice one who took a look at me (and I liked crap) tested me for ketones as so sick and gave me drugs happily

Can't you get one of the cat toilets that are all enclosed. And shut bathroom door so can't get in it

Off to bed as worked last night and then lunch with a friend at pizza E. BUT diff one from last time

Be interesting if

  1. I'm sick
  2. if loo seat falls on my head due to disabled padded seat - like last time ....

Have a good day all x

LightTripper · 09/11/2016 10:10

Hello Robber, please don't feel like a fraud. I was only sick once most days, but I found the nausea and exhaustion absolutely impossible and like you was having to come home early from work, sleep through the worst nausea just to get through the day, etc. etc. It may be worth trying your GP again: if the nausea is interfering with your ability to live your life and go to work then it is a genuine problem.

I was also going to ask how much you are able to drink (headaches can be a sign of dehydration as you probably know). I found drinking water made the nausea worse, so I still had to be careful about fluids despite not throwing up so much as many others here. I found very cold drinks could be good, and things with a strong flavour (weirdly) like coke or lime squash. I also found fizzy water better than flat. May be worth buying some ketostix at the chemist or online, as if your ketones are high then that should get the GP's attention to get you some drugs?

But you have had this for weeks so probably none of this is news to you.

Please do feel welcome here though - I have found the thread very helpful and supportive despite being less sick than many here.
