I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Poor peace, try and get to a GP, it will help.

Southlondon321 · 04/11/2016 11:30

Midwife appt went well. Hurrah she didn't mention ginger once!!! She said that she suggests mini luchboxes of cut up Granny Smith apples, cucumber, grapes can help and good snack option. I've been slicing lemon to my cold water but she said orange or cucumber is nice too. I don't love cucumber but will try orange. She let me nibble rice cakes in her office.
Felt terrible on the way but no sick ...!

Southlondon321 · 04/11/2016 11:33

Four - no tips at all. Just rest. That sounds so awful. Maybe go back to GP

Peace - it's awful getting there but it will really help at GP. If you are sick there they will take you seriously. So that's not a bad thing to happen ... they will take you seriously anyway though!

Blondes - yay breakthrough. Light at the end of the tunnel!!!!

Mimosa - good luck with new meds

fourcorneredcircle · 04/11/2016 12:24

I'm not sure if I need to change medication. The cyclazine seems to work in that I'm normally sick a couple of times first thing and then although I retch a lot I don't vomit except when I chug too many Capri suns. Do the other medications make people feel as sleepy? I find I sleep half the day at the momment.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 04/11/2016 12:38

I don't like eating cucumber, but the flavour is lovely in water, actually. Especially with strawberries and orange, feels like very diluted Pimms Grin I'm mega craving fruit today, funny you mentioned that.

Southlondon321 · 04/11/2016 12:44

I started on promethazine and it knocked me out. So they put me on cyclizine. I still feel tired on it and it's a warning on the packet. I think there are others that are less sleepy so always worth checking.
I'm living off ribena with my breakfast as the sugar perks me up enough to eat whatever I have to. I'm going to try the watery pimms. I've enjoyed strawberries with a meringue next lately. Got my medical exemption cert today so I'm going to book a dentist appt for 2nd tri to hopefully prevent any tooth decay from sugar diet and vomit! Here is hoping I will be able to cope with the appointment by then ..... maybe make it third tri!
Going to tell my yoga teacher about pregnancy today because we had a month gap for her trip but I won't be able to go back. It's not suitable for pregnancy. That's £100 down the drain!!!

MrsM2016 · 04/11/2016 13:20

Hi ladies, A lovely lady commented on a thread I wrote and suggested I take a look on this page.

I feel a bit embarrassed to write this here and I really hope I don't offend anyone, as I would not class myself as having Hyperemesis... I am nowhere near as severe as others :-( just wanted to know people's thoughts and opinions if anyone minds?

I am 27 weeks pregnant and had vomited once a day since 7 weeks... sometimes I have been sick max 3 times a day (I have had the odd break, longest being maybe 4 days). It's generally now only once a day, but generally it's everything my stomach can possibly bring up. It now triggers nose bleeds. This can also occur at any time of the day. Not a day goes past where I do not feel nauseous through the day or bring up fluid and also dry heave.

It is getting me down now, but I am aware that I am obviously keeping certain meals and drinks down - it is only once a day... but I do dread getting up, not knowing when it's going to hit. It's been so embarrassing throwing up in public pretty much Monday-Friday and getting to work every day is a struggle as I commute into London.

It's now got to a point that I don't want to go out when I don't have to because I am so conscious of it striking. So I suppose my question is, has anyone taken anti sickness meds at about my severity? Does the above warrant meds? Should I just man up and just see through the next 3 months? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

fourcorneredcircle · 04/11/2016 13:23

MrsM get thee to your GP.

Your GP will be able to discuss with you what your options are. It isn't normal to be triggering nosebleeds and it isn't normal that you feel so down you don't want to go out. Whether the GP diagnoses HG or not those two symptoms alone should trigger the help you need.

Others will be a long soon with more advice, Flowers

MrsM2016 · 04/11/2016 13:33

Thank you so much for replying. I tried to get an appointment with the GP and the receptionist asked if it was necessary to see him and if she could she help. So I told her the problem and she said he won't want to give me anything as it happens a lot, however she passed my message on, but would not book me in an appointment They have now apparently faxed a prescription for something to a chemist for me, but I feel a bit uneasy taking something I've not been able to discuss with a GP :( I am such a worrier. I suppose, as the receptionist did not feel it warranted meds, I am concerned I am taking something unnecessarily... she said they are normally given to people who are dehydrated etc, which obviously a definite when there is a need for them. I did have a high level of Ketones in my urine at last midwife app so I am trying to eat more. X

peaceloveandbiscuits · 04/11/2016 13:39

God that makes me so cross when receptionists try and fucking diagnose you!

fourcorneredcircle · 04/11/2016 13:43

Find out what the prescription is. I bet one of us are on it Grin
The receptionist doesn't get to decide who warrants meds or not. Unless she's got a medical degree... You are absolutely within your rights to see a doctor.

MoP, Lucinda help?!

happydays00 · 04/11/2016 13:50

mrsm I am furious on your behalf! The receptionist is not, I assume, a GP and therefore has absolutely not medical decision making ability at all!!

Do you know what the doctor has prescribed you? There are a number of anti emetic options, all of which are safe to take during pregnancy: generally cyclizine is the first option, then pro chlorperazine, then metrowhatsitcalled (always forget this) and then ordansetron. (These spellings are probably all incorrect, I apologise)

My advice is to call the number on the first page of this post and ask for their advice. I think they have to call you back but will do and I'm told are very helpful! I would also try and book an appointment with the actual GP (rather than the receptionist) - she has no right to ask you what it is regarding so don't feel you have to disclose this.

Good luck!

MrsM2016 · 04/11/2016 13:57

It's Cyclizine they have given me. X

MrsM2016 · 04/11/2016 13:57

Thanks you happydays00, I will give the number a call and see what they suggest :) X

fourcorneredcircle · 04/11/2016 14:08

Cyclazine is a good start. Pick up the prescription ad take it. It's safe, Quite a few of us are on it :)

Sounds like the GP knew what they were dealing with and acted appropriately but you are still within your rights to request an appointment.

MrsM2016 · 04/11/2016 14:18

Thank you ladies so much. I just phoned the pharmacy and he said that they say to take one tablet up to 3 times a day when needed. Do you think a good start would be one tablet in the morning? I am not sure how these work... Another reason why it would have been nice to have spoken to my GP ha-ha.

Obviously it sounds like you ladies have not had a nice time with it at all :-( X

CastleFeck · 04/11/2016 14:32

Mrs M glad you've got some meds. Feeling sick all day is not something you should suffer when there's tablets available to help. I take my first tablet at 5am when I wake for the loo. Then when I get up a little later it's already in my system. They might make you sleepy.

fourcorneredcircle · 04/11/2016 14:39

Was it you Castle that recomended the 6/13/20 timings? Or was it blondes? Either way, it seems to spread them out well.

Start with one, if you don't feel better 6/7 hours later, have a second, then another 6/7 hours after that. You might need all three, or you might need one. GP told me to take them as I need them, some days not many I don't have all three.

MrsM2016 · 04/11/2016 14:43

thank you ladies Smile
For some reason Monday -Friday I am normally (not always, sometimes it's at my desk at lunchtime haha) vomiting at 9am, I think it's the train. then weekends it can be anytime. I will try taking one at 6am and see how I get on at 9 ha-ha!

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/11/2016 14:48

mrs m - welcome, and we are all at diff stages and levels

i was very sick 4/8w and suffered it till found this thread and saw lovely gp who gave me cyczline, sickness was better but still sick, retching etc up to 14w

14/16w seemed to be sick once in evening 8/9pm

16/19w what i am now has been a lot better, less sick tho do have odd day when bad (ie last friday at a bloody wedding lol) but a lot better

gp told me improves 14/20/40 if you are lucky

and grrrrrrrrrrr at receptionist prescribing for you, tho in this case she was right, im on cyczline and generally ok on it, havnt been really sleepy as some say they are on it

im on 3 a day and yes castle was me who said take roughly every 8hrs

so i take

3/4/5am whenever wake for a wee, tho 7if havnt woken, unheard of
1pm
9pm

means spaced out regually, i have set on my phone and tinkles 1&9pm

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/11/2016 14:49

and def helps to eat, empty stomach/hungry = more sickness for me

Allaboutthecake13 · 04/11/2016 14:50

Good luck MrsM - I replied to your other thread and so glad the lovely ladies over here have been able to help. I am also on cyclizine and it really has helped. Others will be more knowledgeable but I think my GP said to me that it usually kicks in about 60-90mins after taking it so if you have particularly sicky times you can try and time it to take before those hit. I am so annoyed on your behalf at receptionist - in no other scenario would throwing up every day for 20+ weeks be considered manageable! Hope the cyclizine helps - if it doesn't, do go back.

LightTripper · 04/11/2016 14:53

Hello MrsM!

I have found this thread incredibly helpful despite being less sick than you (only throwing up twice a day max and reliably in the evenings). It is still miserable though, and my GP was very insistent that we shouldn't struggle on when there is no need to because safe drugs are available.

Personally I would start on 3 a day to see if it works at all, and then if it doesn't you could go back and see if they can try anything else, and if it does you could try reducing the dose to 2 and then 1 and see if you lose the effectiveness. But that's just me. When I was taking it I took one when I got up, one after lunch, and one at bedtime. My GP said they need to build up in your system, so it's not like a paracetamol where you take it and then it works for X hours and then fades out - you need to take it regularly for a few days to see what is going to happen.

I did find I got very groggy for the first few days but then it got better. It was much earlier in pregnancy though, so I'm not sure how much was just normal early pg exhaustion.

Although it was a rubbish way for them to treat you, I'm glad they have at least given you something. Please don't feel like a fraud. Constant nausea is no joke, even without the retching and vomiting (which you have too!!) Especially for so long - it really gets you down as weeks stretch into months.

This is worth a look if you want to find more about the various drugs - or also the Pregnancy Sickness Support website linked at the top of this thread: www.rcog.org.uk/globalassets/documents/guidelines/green-top-guidelines/gtg69-hyperemesis.pdf

Good luck!
