So I'm almost in my third trimester and with only 3 months to go I have started to set my eyes on the days/weeks after baby arrives. Aside from looking forward to our new bub I'm looking forward to the things I've had to give up!

Are there any foods or drinks you're missing that you would plan to have after the baby comes? I've told DH that he has to take me on a steak dinner (I miss having them medium rare) or for seafood sushi!

Of course this has to be after:

  • I am physically recovered to be out and about and no longer in danger of peeing my pants in public
  • we find somewhere baby friendly or can con my sister to babysit for an afternoon/evening

Pate on toast, champagne. A steak which I won't stress about. And cheesy garlic bread. And a cheese pasty. Carbs aren't "banned" but they give me stinking indigestion/heartburn.

Best meal in the world.... Very strong sweet tea, 2 slices of thick white sliced toast and butter, made by a midwife. Eaten whilst sore and seeping, and gazing at newborn. Perfect.

chocolateismyweakness · 30/07/2016 07:00

I'm currently pregnant for the 3rd time in 4 years and the banned list has changed that much in that short time I've given up!

But tea and toast immediately after DS1 was the best meal I've ever had, and when I've come home from hospital my MIL has always made me my favourite pasta that no one else can do quite like she does!

ICJump · 30/07/2016 07:08

I had rare stake with broccoli for breakfast! My mum even chopped it for me so I could eat it in bed while feeding.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 30/07/2016 07:23

As PP have said, runny eggs are fine. Sushi is fine.
But...

Rare steak is also fine - if it's been frozen first (same for tuna).
If you stick your camembert in the oven, that's fine too.
Whoever wanted mussels, they're fine too.
Oh, and if you really want deli meats, the freezer trick works with them too (though the texture might not be as nice)

The NHS advice has to be quite general to cover all eventualities but really the list of things you properly can't eat is very short. (Mainly to do with liver). It's just that you need to prepare it in a certain way.

Back to the original question, I had HELLP and my liver and kidneys packed up. Any fluid I consumed went straight on my lungs. So from admission to when he was about 4 days old, I was only allowed 50ml of liquid an hour. I was bloody parched in that roasting hospital! Then one of the midwives smuggled me an orange and it was the best thing I've ever eaten!

Cocktails, cocktails and more cocktails.

Urgh, I miss cocktails. I'm going out for a meal with my friends tonight to a lovely restaurant that do the best cocktails. It's going to be torture!

dontpokethebear · 30/07/2016 07:43

A king prawn dansaak! I couldn't eat anything spicy because of heartburn all three times.

It's interesting to see people say they ignored everything on the 'banned list'. Did any of you actually eat liver or pâté?

MoonriseKingdom · 30/07/2016 07:47

Mainly Camenbert and Brie.

Coffee - I just go completely off it in pregnancy.

Curry - my DH will be pleased about this. I just can't touch it at the moment as I am swigging enough gaviscon as it is.

Seekingmiracles · 30/07/2016 07:54

Mr Whippy is banned?! WTH?! I had one last week - didn't even think about it,
Eggs Bennedict is fine now as long as your eggs have the lion stamp! Enjoy!!

I'm most looking forward to a bottle of decent white wine. Preferably a NZ Sauvignon blanc, really cold with a long straw in it Wink

OohMavis · 30/07/2016 08:11

I'm on Slimming World.

Having a homebirth. I'm going to order all the takeaways.

2ManySweets · 30/07/2016 08:13

Looks like I'm the only person on here that's voting for liver, bacon and onions with some mash - mmmmmmn.

I knew I was prefers when I suddenly got the massive horn for liver, steak, kidney, etc. Oh the irony....

Twowrongsdontmakearight · 30/07/2016 08:32

After both my DC my DM brought in blue cheese, Brie and fizz. Delicious!

UmbongoUnchained · 30/07/2016 08:39

Lion stamped eggs were fine 2 years ago when I was pregnant the first time.

I had a rare steak and rare lamb chop with a big big bowl of garlic king prawns. No alcohol though, I really went off it when pregnant and haven't really touched it since.
This time I'm really craving a kebab so will probably have that!

SquedgieBeckenheim · 30/07/2016 08:48

With DD I had a whole day of "banned" foods when I got home from hospital.
Breakfast - dippy eggs and soldiers (they were "banned" then)
Lunch - pate on toast
Dinner - Rare steak and chips.

However, this time around I'm finding myself much more lax with what foods I do and don't eat! Although the guidance has changed, with runny yolks being OK as long as it's lion stamped. Soft ice cream is on the allowed list.

NickMarlow · 30/07/2016 08:53

Supermarket pizza. I'd been in hospital for 2 weeks. That was the best pizza ever!

DrWhy · 30/07/2016 09:07

I'm up in Scotland and all our literature says runny eggs are banned regardless, I checked with the midwife and she also told me they were banned (in a fairly stroppy tone). To be honest I've ignored her but I've definitely cut down on them.
Only other thing I'm really missing is the variety of cheeses and good beer. Baking Camembert helps and a rebellious pregnant friend recently tempted me into some gorgeous goats cheese but but some crusty white bread with a range of soft cheeses washed down by a good real
ale would be fab. In reality I'll leave DH to sort it and it will be takeaway pizza!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 30/07/2016 11:30

Tea and toast is fab!
Had a lovely veggie curry on post-natal ward
Then remember a nice glass of wine when we got home Wine

bumblebee86 · 30/07/2016 11:50

I can't wait to have pate again!!

iklboo · 30/07/2016 11:58

I'd eaten rare steak all through pregnancy (in fact had an utter craving for it) but had gone off chicken. As soon as DS was born I needed chicken. DH brought me a hot chicken & stuffing barmcake - wrapped in foil to keep warm - with loads of mayo & sea salt. I think I inhaled it.

wm3010 · 30/07/2016 12:12

Commercial ice cream is made with pasteurised egg so it's fine. NHS website confirms.

GashleyCrumbTiny · 30/07/2016 12:40

Hmmm. I was holding out for a rare steak. But if you can have that ig it's been frozen then I'm having that tomorrow! Pate for first meal. I've been a bit slack about cheeses and cured meat, but was eating runny eggs without realising you shouldn't (and then finding out that wasn't even true anymore).

lostoldlogin2 · 30/07/2016 12:49

I have no appetite at all. I'm 14 weeks or thereabouts and no food makes me excited :( I can't imagine being all pumped up about a scran! Even after the birth - with my son I had no nausea at all!!

its rubbish haha!

Mind you - sashimi sounds like it would be nice if I had to really think of one.

EreniTheFrog · 30/07/2016 13:12

Stilton is OK?!

In which case, when DH gets back from work, I might just nip off to Aldi Grin

Desmondo2016 · 30/07/2016 13:17

I eat whatever i want including pate and soft cheese etc. I have a glass of wine most weeks. Having been pregnant 4 times over the last 21 years I do find it hard to get massively hung up on the latest lists.

Ilikegin · 30/07/2016 13:18

I want champagne, and a glass of red wine, with a side of Stilton and Brie and pate on toast.. Only a week to go hopefully... Grin I've told DH this is my push present...
