I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Sorry everyone for my long silence - I had some horrible coughing and puking bug with head pounding and fever, but nothing to what people are suffering on here.
Great advice and support from everyone on here as ever.
autumnsunshinebaby Welcome. It is possible to have Hyperemesis without vomiting, so please don't feel you don't belong. By
'crackers' do you mean ones like Cream Crackers? I'm always on the look out for foods tolerable for people on here. I so agree about Lucozade, though some find it a bit acid making.

lucinda hope you are feeling better?

sleepy I hope you also managed to get some rest last night and feel a little happier today. Hope your DH is around this weekend with you.

Out of interest, for those on Ordan - what dose are you on? She's started me out on 2 x 4mg tablets a day but says I can increase to a maximum or 16mg. Seems a lot?

Autumnsunshinebaby · 27/08/2016 10:32

lucinda oh I didn't realise that! Seeing as I've found such lovely supportive people who understand here I'd love to stick around. I'm so sorry you've had a bug. Grim for you.

MotherofPearl · 27/08/2016 10:48

Morning All.
Lucinda, sorry to hear you've been unwell. Hope you're now fully recovered?
Autumn, yes please do stick around on here. Lots of support and encouragement is available, even if we're still sadly not able to offer that elusive magic cure.
Happy, I was on 3 X 4 mg a day, but I know some people have taken up to 16mg a day. AFAIK the main thing is to ensure you space the doses out properly over the course of the day/evening.
Rae, glad to hear your legs have improved. Interesting about the lotion.
Sleepy, how are you feeling this morning?

SleepymrsE · 27/08/2016 14:53

mop loving the term poogate. Thankfully no similar incidents today!

Slept pretty well, apart from one bad reflux/sick incident. Think I'm going to ask the midwife this week about ranitidine on the advice of another suffering pregnant friend. Otherwise think I will just have to tolerate it until the end.

rae hope you have managed some rest today. We've been at the PIL's so at least that gave me a bit of a break.

autumn you should stick around as you'll get support and sympathy from everyone on here. In terms of liquids, it might be worthwhile trying flavoured milk. Worked for quite a few of us. The alternative is bog standard ice poles!

Sorry to hear you've not been well lucinda, hopefully the bug has gone now?

happy I am now only on 2 X 4mg tablets but could take a max of 3 X 4mg tablets. I am also taking 2 X cyclizine tablets (down from 3 also). Maybe try taking two per day to start and up them if you need to.

light and everyone else I've missed, hope you're all doing ok.

LightTripper · 27/08/2016 17:39

Please stay Autumn. I'm not at all sure I have HG but like you I struggle mainly with nausea and this is a great place for support and advice.

Sorry I've been a bit quiet the last few days. Had some not so good days. I think just because of the heat, or maybe as I've been busy at work finishing a few things off.

Not sure there is much to say about it really. Still only throwing up a couple of times a day at most but retching more and generally feeling miserable. I hoped now I'm nearly 14 weeks I'd be over the worst, though I think I remember last time it was 17 I started to feel things were getting a bit better.

Supposed to be going out for early dinner in 5 mins but not sure I'm going to make it. Gaaarghh.

RaeSkywalker · 27/08/2016 20:21

Lucinda I' so sorry to hear you've been poorly. Hope you're back to 100% soon!

happy, I'm on 3x4mg a day. Managing to cut it down to 2 some days. 16mg does seem like a lot, but I guess it gives you somewhere to go if you need to. Please watch out for the constipation, it is awful. I'm also taking up to 3 cyclizine a day (usually 2).

Autumn please stick around if you'd like to. You've got just as much right to be here as any of us. As Lucinda says, you don't have to be vomiting to join the fun (OK, Lucinda was far more articulate than me, but you get the point Wink)

Sleepy I'm glad that you had a better night- but it still sounds horrendous! Hope that the midwife is helpful next week and that your in-laws gave you enough relief to survive the weekend!

Light sorry you've been suffering- I agree, the heat does seem to make it worse. Did you make the dinner? I hope it was bearable if you went.

Not too bad for me today. I had a lay in until 9ish. DH has been out all day at a spots event so I watched bad TV this morning, then did a couple of hours of work, then met a friend at Costa. Managed a iced fruit thingy which was really nice! I'm definitely better than I was- I could tolerate being in there and smelling the food, which wouldn't have been possible a few weeks ago. Now vegging on the sofa with a very tired DH!! Hoping for an early night, I'm very tired.

RaeSkywalker · 27/08/2016 20:22

^ that should be 'sports event', not 'spots event' 😂

LightTripper · 27/08/2016 20:34

Spots event probably more my style Rae!

I actually threw up immediately after writing that post and was really in two minds but did go, and it was nice. My DD was being super cute and had her first food with chopsticks (held by OH!) and her first dumplings, both of which went down very well. She also tried my iced tea which didn't go down so well but generated a very funny face! Confused Grin

So I'm glad I went. Bed now. Night all!

LucindaE · 28/08/2016 11:57

Rae and others, great advice for autumnsunshinebaby.

Rae That's interesting about moisturiser having such a bad effect - even hyperallogenic stuff.
LightTripper That sounds sweet about LO. I think seventeen weeks is unfortunately, average for an improvement with this.
SleepymrsE That sounds purely horrific about the playhouse used as lavatory episode!
Thanks for good wishes. On the mend now.
Waves to MotherofPearl HappyDays and everyone.

Hello all Smile I hope the sun is shining where you are!
I've been trying to get hold of some stronger tablets for the nausea this morning but unfortunately the nurse practioner I spoke to at the out of hours clinic said that cyclizine was the only thing I could have and that she recommended I went to A+E to be "fed through a drip".... Hmm! I did tell her I definitely wasn't bad enough for this and I needed different tablets to try before it got to that stage but annoyingly I couldn't remember the names of any other anti nausea medication to ask about. I'm not planning on going to the hospital so unfortunately I'm going to have to stick it out until Tuesday morning when I can see a GP. Does anyone know what tablets I could have (7weeks pregnant). Thanks so much. I really appreciate your wisdom and support.
Autumn

MotherofPearl · 28/08/2016 13:34

Autumn, do take a look at the list of medication on the Pregnancy Sickness Support website (link in Lucinda's OP). There are quite a few options; I'm not sure what's best for nausea alone. Sorry that nurse wasn't more helpful and you have to wait until Tuesday, which must feel like an eternity away. To what extent is the nausea preventing you from eating and drinking?
Light, glad that you managed to get out for dinner with your DD, it sounds like it did you good.
Rae, sounds like you had a reasonable day yesterday. Good work on the Costa visit! I got really into those iced frappe things when I was suffering! Hope you're resting up today?
Sleepy, sorry to hear the reflux is so bad. Am I remembering correctly that you were on omprezole but it stopped working? I'm not sure ranitidine is as strong as omprezole, but worth a try. You can get it OTC, or off the shelves in Tesco's (either their cheap own brand, or as Zantac).
Happy, how are you finding the Ondan? Hope it's made a difference for you.
Waves back to Lucinda!

MotherofPearl · 28/08/2016 13:36

Mulb, how are you getting on now? Any improvement?

Autumnsunshinebaby · 28/08/2016 13:47

I've just finished reading it having found it after I posted, thank you for pointing me in its direction.

You asked the extent of the nausea... I am sipping very cold water or lemonade as much as I can. I think I'm mildly dehydrated but certainly not worrying levels at the moment however I do wonder the longer it goes on the worse that might get. Eating - nibbling on a couple of very salty crisps which helps with the nausea for about 10 mins. I'm eating little bits here and there so despite my current diet not winning any awards by being nutritious, I'm getting some calories in. This is significantly worse than the typical nausea I had in my last pregnancy though. Yesterday I was in bed all day feeling terrible. And for the next person who kindly suggests ginger...... Grin

I'm so sorry I've not been much support to anyone yet, I'm still finding my feet a bit in this hideous nausea and it's quite hard to think straight at the best of times...

LucindaE · 28/08/2016 16:14

autumnsunshine I'ts awkward it's Sunday - so there will be a lack of out of hours chemists open. Is there any nearby where you can get kesostix just in case? The reason I ask is because I am concerned at your feeling 'muddle headed'. That is a sign of increasing dehydration, unfortunately. Does your skin spring back when you pinch it and can you produce reasonable amounts of urine? If not, you really should go to A and E.
MotherofPearl What would we do without you?
Waves to all.

Autumnsunshinebaby · 28/08/2016 16:32

lucinda thank you for your concern. I've just tested for ketones (fortunately I already had a tub of dipsticks!) and I think it's fine. I'll keep an eye on them though. Skin is fine. Urine is dark (sorry you didn't really need to know that!) so I will just try to keep sipping more water. I usually have a better two hours in the afternoon where I can drink a bit more... I can feel that just coming to the end sadly so I'll quickly try and get more water in before it gets too bad again.

This too shall pass keep going everyone x (ooh that was very un-mumnetty wasn't it but hey ho I'm going to leave it there!)

happydays00 · 28/08/2016 16:33

Hello all,

Well I survived the weekend with house guests... Just! Had to keep going off for a lie down but my friend was very understandable. I have, however, had a little cry on DP now he has returned.

mop I've been sick quite about 6 times since starting the Ordan (started on Friday night) so it's a marginal improvement but not holding my breath. Going to take 3 today instead of 2 and keep my fingers crossed!

How is everyone else? Just seen it's set to stay hot(ish) again next week. Sad Hurry up winter!!

LucindaE · 28/08/2016 19:36

Autumnsunhinebaby I'm happy that there are no ketones. Never worry about TMI on here.
happydays I'm glad your guests were understanding, but I'm not surprised your exhausted.

OP posts:
Autumnsunshinebaby · 28/08/2016 19:52

happydays Well done on getting through the weekend! Can you have a quiet week to recoup as much energy as possible?

RaeSkywalker · 29/08/2016 08:25

Light I'm glad you had a nice meal in the end. You're braver than I am, I would've taken to my bed!

autumn sorry to hear about the nurse. I hope you have better luck with your GP tomorrow. Can you take someone with you? I found that I was taken more 'seriously' when DH came and told the Dr how worried he was about me.

Mother I fear I might become an iced drink addict!

happy I'm glad that your guests have left. I'm sure they're lovely but now you can rest! Hope that 3 tablets a day works for you- let us know how you get on. I was on 3 a day for about 3 months before I even considered cutting down (apparently I am a massive wuss) Grin

I had a good day yesterday, basically just had a really lazy morning and then went to see my parents for a bit. Planning to get some more rest today. I feel much more tired now, I'm guessing that this is caused by HG+3rd trimester.

Mummymulb16 · 29/08/2016 10:11

Oh i still feel like crap! I am constipated and need to wait till Tuesday to go see GP to get something! Every time I take the ondansteron I throw up so I take it I am not keeping it down for it to actually work! The constant nausea is there and I just feel so down !
I have however found a few things that I can tolerate rice pudding and some prune juice( in the hope they make me go but so far not working)! I just want this to end its so depressing

LucindaE · 29/08/2016 10:52

Mummymulb16 You poor thing. I hope they can do something to break the cycle. At least after your recent admission, they'll take you seriously.
I wonder if Ondansetron is available as a suppository or something? Very brave of you to tackle prune juice and rice.
HappyDays I hope you can rest a lot now.
I hope everyone is coping.

Rae Advocates are a great idea. It's a bit provoking, though, when the women with Hyperemesis is taken more seriously because her husband says she is very ill. Excuse me, what century is this?

OP posts:
RaeSkywalker · 29/08/2016 11:11

Mummy I've been there. Go back and see your GP- see if you can get the ondansetron that dissolves on the gum maybe? They should be able to sort the constipation out without too much problem. It is miserable though, I really feel for you Flowers How many weeks are you now?

Lucinda I couldn't agree more about how sad it is that having an advocate helps. My experience so far has been that I've been almost universally patronised by HCPs throughout my pregnancy (almost treated like a hysteric, which I'm certainly not, I'm from a medical background and am a very laid back person). The difference in the GP when DH did the talking was unbelievable the though. I finally got admitted to hospital after my Mum phoned my GP and said that this is not normal pregnancy sickness and she wasn't getting off the phone until they did something about it. I got admitted without my GP even checking me over that time 🙄

RaeSkywalker · 29/08/2016 11:12

^^The 'normal' should be in inverted commas there- no such thing as normal!!
