I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
links.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

To the ladies with the sore hips, I have a condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which really impacts on my hips, they are sublaxive from too much of the hormone Relaxin - which is what you naturally get more of in pregnancy, so I think a similar problem. Anyway, I've found that stretching exercises that strengthen the muscles around the joints to be the best kind. You need to build up the muscle to increase the joint stability, in turn that should help the problem. I'm not sure if there are any pregnancy suitable classes, however I always found Pilates to help a lot with hip joints. As do Aqua classes - also good for building strength without any impact.

icklekid · 08/06/2016 05:27

mrsmonkey horray for feeling slightly normal again- definitely a good sign. Yes to knees together when turning over/ getting out of bed. Physio also recommended a plastic bag for sitting on in car to make it easy to swing around. Symmetry is key apparently!

rae well done for cycling hope the endorphins were amazing after. Pregnancy is so glamorous...I had a uti during first trimester and was truly horrible! Hope the bleeding stops. I often get some from being constipated but just a small amount so not enough to worry.

andagain cyclazine was really effective for me last pregnancy. Am still taking alongside ondansetron this time. Hope it helps

Oh dear ds is wide awake (has been since 5am) so need to get up and play as he's being too noisy 😥 this is what happens when you forget to give his childminder his dummy so he doesn't nap and falls asleep at 6.30pm!

RaeSkywalker · 08/06/2016 06:14

Good luck ickle! It's a shame that vast quantities of caffeine can't be consumed in pregnancy to make such situations more bearable!

LucyHMK · 08/06/2016 08:28

Indeed, Rae!

I've not been sick all night! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

LucindaE · 08/06/2016 14:11

Lucy That sounds good!
I so agree about chips, crisps and coke - for me add tinned fruit and its juice, cheap ice cream, jelly, ice lollies, iron bru, flat Lucozade, elderflower water,, soda water - and lots of you seem to find chocolate milk excellent. a shocking diet indeed...
mrsmonkey Happy news from you, too. It would be great if this is a belated improvement! Great advice. Nobody should worry about tmi on here, by the nature of the complaint, there can't be any delicacy...
Some swear by the suppositories, but doctors don't approve of those, though they do use them in hospital for women throughout preganncy. icklid Sorry about early rising LO. How is the sickness now?
BarmeeMarmee You must be run off your feet, but it'll be lovely to hear from you whenever you can look in.
Rae I missed that about cycling. That's impressive.
againandagain I'm glad you've got cyclizne and I hope it works really well for you.
SpecialStainsalmondbutter and everyone- how are things...
Still no word from chochoholic or indeed shopoholic...
Someone was kind enough to ask after my mother. Sadly, she's not likely to improve, but she's in good spirits overall.
Apologies if I've missed anyone. Waves to eallison and SeaEagleFeather

Well done Lucy!

Lucinda sorry to hear about your mother.

almondbutter · 08/06/2016 15:46

Hi everyone, hope you're having good days.

I met my endocrinologist today at the joint endo/obs clinic. He was good: very straightforward and information and reassuring. He said that it's very likely the hyperemesis has been exacerbated by the thyroid problem and said how rubbish I must have been feeling -- you all know how nice it is to have that acknowledged.
The obstetrician was also pregnant and asked after my hyperemesis. When I told her how it had been and so on you could see her eyes widen: it's so easy to forget how extraordinary our experiences are (thankfully for everyone else).

In small and significant victories news, I showered standing up the whole time today, slept through the night (only second time since early March) and have found that baby and I enjoy and can keep down corn on the cob with shed loads of butter. Feeling like the little sprat might actually be getting some nutrients finally.

Lucinda, sorry to hear that about your mum. I hope she's comfortable at least.

RaeSkywalker · 08/06/2016 16:05

almond I'm so pleased that your appointment with the endocrinologist went well! You're right- it feels good to have how bad HG is acknowledged!

Huge 'well dones' for the shower, sleep, and corn on the cob! 3 massive victories in 24 hours. Grin It must feel brilliant.

I've worked the morning today. DH is ill with a horrendous flu bug (he's rarely ill bit hasn't got out of bed in over 24 hours now Sad). I've got a sore throat today so I'm worried I'm coming down with it too. Confused Trying my best to look after him but as you can imagine, food prep is not my strong suit at the moment!

almondbutter · 08/06/2016 16:18

Get well soon to you both, Rae.
How would baked potatoes be? Stick them in oven and forget about them for two hours. Otherwise soup since it's done v fast?

LucyHMK · 08/06/2016 16:41

Agree about the baked potatoes, worth a shot. I do struggle with the smell of them cooking, but if my husband (is that what DH means?) cooks them with the back door open & I eat the potato in the garden, they seem to stay down for longer than most foods.

RaeSkywalker · 08/06/2016 16:42

Yes I think quick and easy is the way forward! The smell of potato makes me heave at the moment but we have some homemade soup stashed in the freezer so I'll dig that out now. Great idea, thank you!

I'm hoping that my sore throat doesn't progress into the full-blown virus, fingers crossed. We aren't a happy household today!

RaeSkywalker · 08/06/2016 16:43

Cross posted Lucy! Yes, DH= 'Darling Husband' Smile

icklekid · 09/06/2016 04:46

Thanks rae I did indeed have a strong coffee when I got to work! Sorry to hear about dh hope he recovers quickly and doesn't pass it on. Food wise definitely do what you can- dh and ds are living off ready meals. Partly because we have no kitchen and partly because I'm not cooking! Homemade soup os a healthier option though!

Horray for sickness free night lucy hope for the same again! Oh and don't think I've said a proper hello and welcome!

lucinda you have summed up my diet to a T! Makes me feel better that I'm not the only one! Sickness seems more under control despite busy days at work this week. Fingers crossed for a small improvement before inevitable worsening towards end of 3rd trimester. Really pleased your mother is in good spirits hope you and your family are supported at tgis difficult time.

almond really pleased you've had 2 positive interactions with medical professionals. I agree that a bit of sympathy and a lot of understanding goes a long way to helping how we feel! Congratulations on your shower- let's hope it is the first of many! Also corn on the cob although can't say I fancy that...

Well despite a crazy busy week sickness has been managable. So far I worked half day mon+ exercise class, crazy day tue+ pilates class, mega crazy day wed+ wait for it...out for dinner with nct friends!!! We went for tapas so I could pick at what I fancied. Not only was it yummy but it stayed down!!! This is amazing! Now my mil is coming to have ds tomorrow morning for me to rest- as much as you can on a building site! Am pushing to get a sink back into the kitchen at the moment and trying to persuade dh we need to buy the new dishwasher now so can get it plumbed in. Washing up in the bath anyone??! Anyway fingers crossed ds sleeps better than last night and still have at least an hour to mn this morning!

LucyHMK · 09/06/2016 07:37

Thanks, Rae. Ah, I see, so I assume DD is dear daughter, DS is dear son etc. That all makes a lot more sense. Also totally agree on the potato smell 😷

Ickle, thanks for the welcome, not sick in the night again, but not a good night's sleep either - very sore stomach.

Does Stemetil cause constipation? Think I might try taking some lactulose to see if that helps. If it's not one thing...!

LucindaE · 09/06/2016 12:54

I think BT may be working on my internet connection problem at last...
Lucy congratulations on not being sick in the night, and congratulations on AlmondButter over an empathic specialist, that does make a difference, and on showering standing up. Thanks for sympathy over my mother.A great idea about baked potatoes.
icklekid [winks] It is the most disgusting diet, and people probably think that is how one normally eats.
Rae Oh dear, that is so unlucky, flu in summer.
I hope everyone is coping in this heat...

OP posts:
SpecialStains · 09/06/2016 17:46

Hello all,

Had my first growth scan today. Baby is a little small, but above the 10th percentile so no worries there, and I have another growth scan at start of July. It was just an ordinary ultrasound, but we got a really good shot of his face looking at us. He already looks so much like DH it's unreal!

I'm really struggling with the heat. I can't sleep and it makes the nausea and foamy mouth so bad. It was 29.5 degrees at work this week and I feel very fat and pregnant.

Lucinda Sorry to hear about your mother. I'm glad BT are working on your internet issues. I still haven't forgiven them for my early months with HG and no netflix.

Lucy I work with someone with Elhers-Danos syndrome. That's got to be tough managing it with pregnancy. In terms of constipation, apparently stemetil can cause it, particularly if combined with a low fibre HG diet.

Almond Glad you had a sympathetic consultant. It really does make all the difference. Good work on the shower! I don't know what is is about showers that sets off HG so much, but they are really hard work when you're suffering!

Ickle That's a busy week! Don't over do it, but glad it sounds like you're having a nice week.

Rae how's your DH? Did you manage with cooking? Sandwiches are fine for the odd dinner and never hurt anyone if you really can't stand anything else.

I'm going to the cinema with a friend tonight, mainly to sit somewhere with air con for a few hours!

LucindaE · 09/06/2016 19:54

SpecialStains That sounds sweet! Glad all is well. My daughter looked very like OH for the first few days, which rather dismayed me in a girl Grin.
That's awful you didn't have that diversion when suffering badly. If BT don't sort things out soon I will write a very horrible letter to them, which they will probably lose.

OP posts:
icklekid · 10/06/2016 04:44

lucinda I've only heard bad things about bt Internet recently...hope they get it sorted soon!

special glad growth scan went well and hope that continues. Don't need something else to worry about! Hope you enjoyed the cinema- what did you see?

lucy you will using the acronyms like a pro before you know it! I have to stop myself writing mil (mother in law) and the like when messaging friends on facebook- and have failed before as just too used to it! Oh well no one has looked confused yet! I think I like it because it takes me back to my yoof when writing in txt spk 😉

Well I had a lovely day yesterday- nice chilled morning without ds then he had 2h nap and took him to the park for the afternoon. I even got his haircut which desperately needed doing but I was traumatised after he screamed throughout the last time. Peppa to the rescue! Then rewarded us both with choc milkshake from nero's! He was really good all day bless him. Still no sink or kitchen however they put our breakfast bar in and I may have cried because it was so beautiful- pregnancy hormones were blamed! Dh dispairs wondering how I will cope when this is all finished!

Andagainandagainandagain · 10/06/2016 12:51

baked potatoes are great at the moment. talky help get rid of the residual nausea. I got the microwavable ones so I can avoid the lengthy wait and smells. anything to make life easier.

The cyclizine has really stopped the vomiting but I am still nauseous but can live with that.

Unfortunately (tmi) I have ended up with diarrhea though. I am completely whacked and my husband had had to work from home. My mum has come overt now to look after DD. I think it is just something I ate but the stomach cramps are horrid on top of the sticky feeling. I think I will go and stay with my parents next week sssi they can look after DD and I and DH can work. So annoying as I felt so positive after the cyclizine worked. sigh

LucyHMK · 10/06/2016 13:28

Andagain I was the same for the first few days after my pills started to work. Hopefully it'll pass soon. Not pleasant.

icklekid look at me, figuring out the bold!

Special I don't know what you mean - my diet is just fab right now Wink

All ladies, I found a really great ginger sweet on Amazon that my DH purchased on his Prime speedy delivery thing, they are great for the sickness. Not sure if I'm allowed to say what they are (is that advertising?). Oh well, I'm not the seller, so here's the link -
www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0013GAD9I/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00B5FM3XQ&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=TW7YQQTTN5JYP24CCFC6

mrsmonkey14 · 10/06/2016 13:36

Hi everyone! Hope the sun is shining where you are (metaphorically even if not in reality...)

special glad to hear growth scan went well, it's so lovely seeing their faces isn't it?
DD looked incredibly like DH in utero and once born, it's only more recently I can see bits of me in her face, she's like his double! We got a shot of this baby's face too at the last scan and she looks identical to DD! I do hope they look alike. DD has a wonderful skin colour (she is mixed race), so we're wondering if baby will be the same.

ickle congrats on all the exercise and successful tapas eating! Hurrah for beautiful breakfast bars too 😊 Not long til you will ENJOY breakfast sitting at that!!

rae hope DH flu is getting better?

lucinda BT are awful. A few years ago I resolved never to use them again! (After they handled two bereavement situations appallingly with me). Good luck getting it sorted. Emails to the CEO seem to be the way forward these days!

andagain sorry to hear about the diarrhoea, do keep an eye on your ketones. Stomach cramps are awful when you already feel sick. If you can manage it, something like flat coke or lucozade may help? Can you stomach some dioralyte? (I've heard of people freezing dioralyte into ice cubes to suck on if you can't keep it down). Very glad to hear your parents can help with DD. Help with childcare makes things so much better and stops you getting worse. I know for sure I would have been in hospital more if I didn't have my childminder.

DD having a nap now so I'm planning the same! Had an awful night, woke up abruptly at 2.45am needing to vomit, then had terrible stomach cramps for the rest of the night. I was a little concerned I was going into labour as stomach was hardening, but seems it was just braxton hicks on top of bowel cramps. I ended up on all fours doing birthing breathing and vomiting into DD's potty. How glamorous! I've no idea what set it off - probably just the constipation from Ondansetron. Very little food has been staying down the last few days so I feel like I'm living off flat lucozade, that's also probably contributing to the constipation. Must try to get some prune juice down me but waiting to feel less sick before I try.

Despite this have had a lovely morning with DD who has been giving me lovely cuddles, and we've been in the garden on her slide. She didn't even complain about going for a nap! They're very much worth it in the end, these little HG babies! X

mrsmonkey14 · 10/06/2016 13:41

X post with lucy, glad the ginger sweets are helping! I've generally found sweets quite good, although had to stop when my teeth started hurting!
I've also found that flat ginger ale is going down ok. I know, I know, I just suggested ginger might help! 😬 Although i think it's more the mild taste and sugar than the magical ginger that helps.

LucyHMK · 10/06/2016 14:45

I think it's the sugar + ginger + that it's not a biscuit! I swear, if one more person suggests a ginger nut 👊🏼

RaeSkywalker · 10/06/2016 18:49

So sorry for going AWOL everyone!

DH is much better, thank you to all who asked. He's not moved from bed all week but suddenly today has been driving me nuts looking for things he can do around the house Grin we survived on toast, soup and Angel Delight- dinner of champions!

ickle so glad that your tapas stayed down! You've had a super busy week!

Lucinda hope your IT issues are on their way to being sorted!

Special I'm glad the scan went well. Sounds lovely! How was the cinema?

And sorry you've got an upset stomach. Hope you feel better soon. I'm glad that the cyclizine is working though!

mrsmonkey sorry you had a rubbish night! Are you feeling any better now?

I'm struggling to sleep at night this week so consequently feeling sick in the early hours. Going to meet my friends in a bit- I've said I'll just stay for an hour because I don't want to overdo it. Looking forward to seeing them though- the last time was when I was 4 weeks pregnant, pre-HG!

LucindaE · 10/06/2016 20:50

Just dashing on - BT supposed to have sorted out the problem today Confused- icklekid Lol, I blubbered at the sight of babies and also sad bits in 'Vanity Fair', but didn't see any breakfast bars beautiful enough to set me off...
Sorry to hear of diahorrea (spelling?) and horrible stomach cramps. Lol about ginger beer and sweets helping a bit Grin
At least its not so hot.
