Pregnancy after infertility

bananafish81 · 03/03/2016 13:15

Thought I’d start this thread as I find myself feeling quite out of place on the ‘normal’ antenatal club threads - find it difficult to relate to being upduffed after 'just' having some sex, and thinking ahead to buying maternity clothes, how much maternity leave to take, where I’d like to give birth etc

I realise it’s entirely my own issues and that infertility world has clouded my views, but I want to scream ‘DON’T YOU KNOW EVERYTHING THAT COULD GO WRONG!!’.

There’s a thread for pregnancy after previous loss, but thought there might be some kindred spirits who are navigating the world of pregnancy after infertility

Great stuff HP - it's incredible what they can see at the 20wk scan isn't it? Hope it has made you feel happy!!

HP07 · 09/05/2016 11:46

Yes amazing, so much detail, they even checked for a cleft lip!

birchygoo · 09/05/2016 12:20

amazing scan HP - must be so relieved to find out everything is well.

Kiwi I am a little behind you, I am 10+1 today. I dont have my scan until 26th May. I feel like this is so far away! I am sure my colleagues also suspect - I have had multitude of appointments. Have another one on Wed for blood tests due to IBS symptoms.

That's so good that you get to find out on the day about the trisomy risks. Protocol in our hospital is that if they are high risk they will phone you within 3 days. If they are low risk you will get a letter within 2-3 weeks! I think its awful to leave anxious pregnant women that long. So you are really lucky to be able to hang around for results. I do work in a role within the hospital and my colleague who was having scans around this time last year managed to convince them after a lot of begging to ring her that day regardless of the results so i may or may not also see if I can get them to agree to this as well. I will see how worried I am on the day. As I wouldn't do anything different for Down syndrome. Its Patau and Edward syndrome that frighten me but they are much much lower risk. (have not decided what I would do about them - think just have a meltdown :-( ) I am only having screening really for information purposes for Down syndrome as they would need to do more detailed scans of the heart which could determine where I would deliver. So I dont know if I need to ask people to go out of their way against protocol just because I would like to know earlier, as I wouldnt be acting on the results (most likely - who knows until they are in that situation though). (That was a long winded way of saying that!). When is your scan Kiwi?

I work with stats and the MMR has me more worried as its more likely aghhhhh I cant wait to have some reassurance regarding this. 17 days and counting down!

kiwiblue · 09/05/2016 14:31

birchy my scan is on Friday! It's felt like a long wait but finally it is close. Wow that is different re the results timing. Yes I think I'd rather know that day in case it is bad news as it might affect which family we tell. You could certainly try to get the results sooner but I suppose if you know it most likely won't change things that is good if they say no. What do you mean by MMR, excuse my ignorance?

Guys I'm a bit scared- just went to toilet and got pink tinge on toilet paper. Is this normal? I haven't had any bleeding so far.

BorisIsBack · 09/05/2016 14:34

We had our 12 week scan today, all good. The baby is big for its age - already 2-3 days bigger than it should be. Dh is a giant so it's not surprising really.
Kiwi - my scan took 1 hour 30 without the downs etc test, lots of hanging round with a very full bladder! We decided not to have the tests as I think they can add to my already Sky high anxiety and we wouldn't do anything; it would also only be for info.

Blueroses99 · 09/05/2016 14:42

Great news HP and lovely pic 😊

stealthbanana · 09/05/2016 14:49

Fabulous news hp and boris! Laughing at your giant baby Boris.

We are now booked in for an early scan on Monday 16th - I'll be 7+2, so should see a heartbeat if there is anything to see. Have had massive kerfuffly drama with my progesterone - doctor agreed to switch me onto Lubion injections, but Healthcare at Home have completely failed to deliver them in a timely manner. So have been ODing on cyclogest and hoping for the best. One week to go - I swing between thinking all will be fine and being convinced there's something horribly wrong and it's a blighted ovum which is why my progesterone is not rising.

Hope everyone had a great weekend in he sunshine! I turned 35 so am now officially a geriatric mother-to-be Grin

kiwiblue · 09/05/2016 15:05

Boris that's great! Strangely my instructions say I don't need a full bladder?!

HP07 · 09/05/2016 15:06

That's great Boris. I'm glad your scan went well.

Kiwi bleeding is not 'normal' in pregnancy but it is quite common. Just look at me! Ive certainly had my fair share of spotting and everything is fine but if youre worried can you speak with your midwife or EPU? It could be just your cervix as it is highly vascularised during pregnancy. I don't even have enough fingers to count the times I have had brown, pink and red spotting so far. My pregnancy notes will need to be carried around by in a lorry soon!

Blueroses99 · 09/05/2016 15:29

Hi Kiwi, I also had an episode of bleeding that was unexplained but didn't mean anything bad. I know it's worrying though so speaking to midwife/EPU is a good idea.

BorisIsBack · 09/05/2016 15:55

Kiwi sorry missed the bleeding question - i think it would be good to follow up with a midwife or epu for reassurance.

Re bladders: The scan I had privately early also said a full bladder was needed. The ultra sonographer this time told me a fairly full bladder helps but mine was fuller than it needed to be, so just have a glass of water before you go in?

Stealth happy birthday :) Im also geriatric - feels great huh. Sorry about your drug drama.

HP lovely scan picture :) love the image of your notes being in a lorry. When do they get to heavy for you to carry around?!

Blueroses99 · 09/05/2016 16:11

Glad the scan went well Boris.

I'm 12wks today and have my scan on Wednesday. I've only ever had internal scans where the bladder needs to be empty. I had to have a full bladder for egg transfer but I misjudged it and it was too full and had to half empty it (which is actually really difficult!!). DH thought I went to the toilet before egg transfer so the embryos didn't fall out 😂

Blueroses99 · 09/05/2016 16:13

*it was embryo transfer not egg transfer, that makes no sense!

kiwiblue · 09/05/2016 17:10

Thanks guys, I'll text my midwife I think if it seems to be persisting.

Thanks for the info re bladder too!

HP07 · 09/05/2016 17:43

Boris - I was told at the appointment before last that I had the same amount of notes already as a woman who was about to give birth because of all the time Ive had to visit for anti-d due to the spotting. I already have 2 full pages of hand written notes and at this stage I should have only been to 2 routine midwife appointments plus my scans!

stealthbanana · 09/05/2016 19:42

Lol. The bladder is hard to get right. The doctor after he did mine said very politely "your bladder was quite full wasn't it?" which I think was code for "what the hell did you drink?!".

The drugs palaver continues - have finally got the Lubion delivered and they've forgotten to deliver the syringes with it. Gah! I have some leftover needles from the cetrotide but they are too small for the solution (needle is 1ml, solution is 1.13ml). So am having to improvise and prepare 2 needles with half and half of the solution. Ffs. Never ending! Hopefully the lubion does the trick though with my stubborn progesterone.

BorisIsBack · 09/05/2016 19:46

Oh stealth what a pain. From bitter experience I can confirm you can get extra needles from some chemists (one in every area, usually the back street one) as part of a needle exchange programme (I also wasn't sent needles for my trigger shot). Hope the drugs work.

stealthbanana · 09/05/2016 19:51

Thanks boris. I have enough to last me through to my scan next week, just annoying I have to stab twice rather than once! Why can't these delivery places get it right?!

Blueroses99 · 09/05/2016 20:13

How annoying Stealth. Are HaH going to send on the correct needles?

They didn't send part of my order cos the prescription expired for one of the items - they took my money in full but didn't tell me that part of the order wasn't coming! They did send it through later though after I called them.

stealthbanana · 09/05/2016 20:31

I'm going to get some needles from my doctor when I go in for a scan next week assuming I still need them after that as am losing the will to live with HaH. Emailed the secretary tonight so she should confirm that's ok tomorrow. If not, I'll call them in the morning. Next time I'll go to asda!

birchygoo · 09/05/2016 23:11

kiwi have you had any further bleeding? I had bright red spotting for 3 days around 6 weeks. Had early scan and everything was good at the time and no reason for it. So it doesn't necessarily mean bad news. Did you text midwife?

By MMR, I meant missed miscarriage - no clue what MMR is though, having a mental moment ha ha

Primaryteach87 · 09/05/2016 23:17

Hi all, I'm pregnant rather miraculously unplanned after 4 years infertility, 4 m/s and then finally our first child, who is one.
Still really cannot believe it.
Just wanted to say I had shockingly, horrific pain around 10-14 weeks with my DC1 to the point that I was screaming out in pain after taking painkillers and ended up in A&E. Turned out to be trapped wind Blush So don't panic if you feel pain, it isn't always serious!

BorisIsBack · 10/05/2016 07:24

Primary -thank you that's helpful and well timed. I've been up half the night with stomach ache :( high up really strong dull aches that feel like a band across my stomach. :( so miserable.

Blueroses99 · 10/05/2016 08:46

I had a really restless night, didn't sleep well at all 😞 I think my stomach ache was due to being really bunged up from the progesterone (sorry TMI). Anyway one more sleep til the next scan, can't wait!

Because none of our other embryos survived beyond blastocyst (this cycle and the last) even though we had a good number of embryos, I'm really nervous that something will go wrong. Usually I am positive and happy, but sometimes the fear creeps up on me.

stealthbanana · 10/05/2016 08:54

I had a shockingly restless night too. Woke up at 3am wide awake and didn't fall asleep until 6am. Have just cancelled all my meetings and am working from home as am beyond shattered & incredibly nauseous.

blueroses Flowers The Fear is the worst. I feel like it would just be too easy for this to work and OF COURSE we are going to have to go back to the drawing board.
