Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Congrats on the scan Amy.

Had another few vomits. In bed feeling sorry for myself. Night all xx

eallison88 · 11/11/2015 21:10

amys by my reckoning that takes you to June 12th. Yay for extra scan :) is important to look fit positives!

mop and icant your wee ones may end up sharing a birthday with me (10th) - lucky old them!

lemons lactulose helped me when I was constipated on ondansetron; I was never as bad as some ladies get. I put that down to eating nothing but tinned peaches (pretty much the only thing stood a chance of staying put), but it might just have been that they particular side effect never hit me as badly. Might be worth trying.

Drinks/fluids; suggestions of things that have worked well for others fir those who are struggling. Fanta, nice from tinned fruit, melon, bottled water (fridge cold). Generally drinks that are as cold as possible or hot. Sparkling water. Milkshakes if you can stomach dairy.fizzy drinks generally seem good, especially packed with ice. Don't worry too much about water; sugary drinks are better for your dehydration than water (counter intuitive I know). Basically, work out what wirks for you and don't stress about whether it's the right thing - if it stays diem its right!

One of my triggers for vomiting was dairy...The doctor advised me tiday to cut dairy out of my dirty in case its triggering baby's vomiting. I could cry! I'm so enjoying milk and cheese again. And ice cream. Am gonna do it fit a week and if it makes a difference. If it does then I'm going to have to seriously consider stopping breastfeeding and using formula; have already had to cut out tomato... that wouldn't much left to eat!

LucindaE · 11/11/2015 22:12

Klaptrap Welcome. Do join us, though I hope you'll get away with things getting no worse. It is possible to have Hyperemesis without actual vomiting.
eallison You are invaluable, and a lot younger and more lively than Mother hen. As others say, it is so nice of you to help others now suffering.
Sorry for those who are feeling so foul. Happy news about scan, amys.
Thanks, lemons. I hope I'e got this updated version right.

So i made it a day without nausea and no gagging/vomiting. Felt so good despite still having acidy tummy and it being uncomfortable wen i try to eat. Even sore throat, runny nose and headache is more enjoyable than the HG that has been with me from week 3 to 15 so far. I pray for more days like this, but not getting my hopes up just yet. Looking forward to seeing gp tomorrow for more Odanestron and also hoping for something to sort out tummy discomfort. I really admire those out there that are still getting to work wen feeling so awful. Im due 3rd may and cant wait. Finally managing to keep the odd cup of decaf tea down which helps settle my stomach a bit. I find water can really make me want to gag at times. Ive been drinking sparkling lemon and lime flavour water and find that goes down easier.

eallison88 · 12/11/2015 06:02

Charlie that's great to hear! How exciting to be keeping tea down, that's one of the things I missed most (gosh.that sounds terribly British of me!).
mother hen that's a veru long list of due dates. A few names that have gone quiet as well, hopefully that means their hg has settled down to a more manageable level!

Reebok · 12/11/2015 06:19

Great news Charlie! I'm not a massive tea drinker but I definitely miss having a cup every now and then.

I feel like crying. Been awake since 4.30 as dd was up screeching from her reflux pain. Finally settled her at 5.30 and she slept again but I didn't manage to. And now I have to get up for work. My head is pounding and I just know today is going to be a horrible sick day thanks to exhaustion!

eallison88 · 12/11/2015 06:55

reebok be gentle to yourself. Youre poor daughter. I'm glad she settled, it's jusy a shame it wasn't early enough for you to get a bit more sleep. must you go in today? What are the chances of an earlier finish so you can get home before your daughter and catch a few hours sleep?

amysmummy12345 · 12/11/2015 07:18

I feel your pain Reebok, went to put lil dd in bath last night and she had a rash all over her legs and arms, phoned 111 and the nurse rang me back just after midnight, then lil one was up in the night and I kept having stomach and groin pain... Feel like I haven't been to bed... Lets hold hands today and get through this xxx

Reebok · 12/11/2015 07:20

I feel guilty if I don't especially as I leave at 11 to go to my midwife appointment. DD is in nursery all day so will get oh to pick her up after he finishes work and after hospital I will try to nap or at least rest. Why oh why did I choose a small age gap????

Reebok · 12/11/2015 07:21

Amy do you have to go into school too? Your poor dd and poor you. Hand holding here while falling asleep on the train.

CharlieHamer1985 · 12/11/2015 08:02

Reebok - nothing worse when u feel crap and want to sleep and your lil one wakes. My son has been waking early hours partly to teething and partly to viral infection.

Amysmummy - hope your lil one is ok. Was the rash like lots of of small red/pink pin pricks. This is what leo got after he kept getting high temperatures. Doctor checked him and said it happens to babies with viral infections. They checked him over to rule out the spots being anything contagious.

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 12/11/2015 08:52

Reebok and amy the last thing you need atm is no sleep. I'm afraid today and tomororw might be not the best :(

lemons it came back to me... might Movicol be any use? it's kind of gentle in getting things moving but also safe in preg.

One thing that some people find useful for getting liquid in is ice chips, or small ice blocks, and sucking. I also found tonic water helpful.

Lovely to hear abut scan amy. it does make it all seem more real doesn't it?

charlie if you've had one good day, then it probably means the slow climb upwards has begun. Wise not to expect too much too fast, yeah, but each better day is a bit of a treat isn't it!

ealli know what you mean about tea ... awful flat taste that was horrid. Isn't it odd how hormones affect your sense of taste so very much? Do hope that your little one can stop being sick, poor mite and poor you.

spandau1980 · 12/11/2015 12:29

Having brief moments of relief from awful acid stomach and nausea
Still being sick at least once a day and headaches have increased along with constant bunged runny nose ....

I'm 15 weeks today

Don't think I'd have stuck at this without this thread and the fab ppl on it so THANKYOU

Feeling bit sick atm but a few moments where I don't is like a miracle even if it don't last long
Fx by 16 weeks I'll be even better !?

To all those struggling with jobs too I don't envy you one tiny bit. Been there, done that ... not fun ...

Going to look into a a private scan round beginning of Dec to find out what I'm having and to make it feel a bit.more real.
Little bump appearing .. every time bump starts sickness eases off usually for me ... weird ...
Xq

LucindaE · 12/11/2015 13:07

Reebok and amy'smum You poor things, I do feel for you. It is horribly tough now; but if you'd gone for a four or five year age gap, they would be less liikely to play together. I did always envy mothers with two, especially those with a small age gap, for that. The kids would play together and so keep out of her hair a lot. Things will get better.
spandau I am so glad that vomiting has anyway reduced to that, and you have those moments of feeling half way normal again. Charlie congratulations on a good day.
Re; the list, I think you're right. A lot of women suffer horribly for a short time, but we don't tend to hear much from them after fourteen to sixteen weeks. Not because they are selfish, but because young mothers are so busy and most people are working too. So, we don't get a clear picture of how much it goes off for the majority of sufferers. I know Rubyreins was very ill at one point and was having to battle in to court as a barrister in a very male oriented environment (I think even the elderly judge took pity on her at one point and allowed her breaks).
iCan't Any news re meds?
eallison as below. You are invaluable. Times have changed a bit since i
suffered (thank goodness).

Reebok Did you say that you are giving up teaching at that school when your ML starts? I think you said it a bit back, but can't find post.

OP posts:
Reebok · 12/11/2015 14:33

Spandau that's great news! Glad you've had a few ok moments.

Charlie hopefully it's the start of good things to come.

Lucinda yes I will be giving up teaching for a few years until los are in school. Childcare for two will be ridiculous so there's no point. And I feel like I've missed out with dd.

Had my 16 week app...they didn't listen for heartbeat this time. I was quite disappointed.

CharlieHamer1985 · 12/11/2015 15:55

Feel like a drugs cabinet since my trip to the doctors at lunch time. Have a uti so antibiotics 3 tabs a day for a week. Got a repeat of ondansetron. Couldnt take one last nite as had run out so not feeling as good today. For the indegestion and washing machine tummy feeling they have put me me on Ranitidine so hoping they will help. Then good old paracetomol for the viral infection and the pregnancy vit tab. If they all stay down that wud be fab. Im looking forward to the small age gap between my son and this baby (14month). Defo wont be going for a 3rd as dont want to go through HG a 3rd time. Got 7.5 weeks left til i go back to work and really want to make the most of the time with my son but im so worried that all of that time im still ill or worse its still going once back at work. Its defo put pressure on my relationship with my other half.

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 12/11/2015 16:12

the appt went okay otherwise reebok?

charlie is there any chance at all of not going back to work? HG is a great deal worse if you are stressed.

CharlieHamer1985 · 12/11/2015 17:24

OnceAMeer - to qualify for my full maternity pay i would have to go back. My company pay more than basic for the first 6 months. I will be 22 weeks by the time i go back so hoping it will be gone or if not at least calmed down a bit. Im going back 4 days a week instead of 5. I do have a years annual leave to take before i go on maternity so if gets bad i will use that. Need to earn as much as possible as got stuff i need to buy (like a double buggy). Plus want to pay off some of our bills for the year to take financial pressure of my partner.

Reebok - Aww thats mean of them. I like hearing heartbeat makes me feel reassured and reminds me im pregnant not just ill. Hope all is well?

Reebok · 12/11/2015 18:01

Meerka She just Just went through bloods... A few test results were inconclusive so had to have repeat bloods. My rubella immunity has gone once again just like with dd so will have to have mmr again after birth. Also had ketones so sending urine in case of infection. Other than that all ok. Told me that the hg should subside by 20 weeks as I've hit 16 mark and not gone yet.

Charlie that sucks about work. Fx hg subsides by then for you! I'm not fussed about maternity pay as won't be going back so can't take the pay other than smp or I will either have to pay it back or return to work for 12 weeks.

amysmummy12345 · 12/11/2015 18:32

Another day almost done .... Hi Reebok, yeah I'm a teacher, three days a week, felt nauseous all day and vile run forest thing but coped... Just lol.

Thanks all for your concern and kind words Smile this forum is the best Grin hope everyone's had an ok day xx

spandau1980 · 12/11/2015 18:44

Reebok I'm weaning myself off cyclizine now as I m not.convinced that taking things won't prolong the HG ... I hate taking anything if I can help it...
If I start vom loads gain I'll re start it again.
Hoping ur HG Goes by 20 weeks.
Mine has gradually been more severe each time sadly ...
Anyone else has sever runny nose (not a.cold) post nasal drip. Constantly blowing my nose as it going down my throat makes me so sick (sorry tmi).

Reebok iv bought my self a fetal.doppler
Had one last time (sold it grrr as didn't plan on any more.lol )) but it's great .. cheers me up no end. I got it second hand off ebay it's an angel sounds one. Cheap but works fine.
I can hear it moving around and the heart beat Grin

Reebok · 12/11/2015 19:19

Amy sorry to hear today was rough. Rest up Hun.

Spandua makes sense then that the hg hasn't subsided yet like it did by 16 weeks last time. I suppose I just expected it to be the same but the sickness has been more difficult in truth this time round. Without my magic pills I would have aborted by now! Midwife asked when I would come off them...I said when I can guarantee I will stop being sick! Good luck to you! Hope it doesn't get worse. Cyclizine doesn't help me at all except through an iv.

By the way you're tempting me to buy a Doppler but I'm scared if I can't find heartbeat I will freak.

spandau1980 · 12/11/2015 19:38

My last doppler was cheapie heard baby at 10 weeks. Heard this one straight away. (13weeks) Need lots of gel though and it's really low down nr pubic area but it s a lovely feeling and makes u bond .
Yep I agree on the tablets or abort as it s so god dam tough !!! Unless uv had HG ppl don't understand but even on stuff iv been angry and hating my pregnancy ect defo feel better now I'm in 2nd trimester like uts more real and achieved a huge deal by vomiting 9 weeks straight!
Tbh don't think cyclizine is doing anything ...
I wouldn't come off urs yet as u are at wk still and you still sound quite bad. I felt I'll til 20 weeks with last pregnancy but stopped so much vom by 16 weeks but still sick feeling til 20 and queasy on n off til end. :(

Feeling quite rough this eve after trying to eat ect !---boo
Another day done x

Reebok · 12/11/2015 19:49

Oh in regards to runny nose...yep I have it. Had it last time too...and it results in excess phlegm which just sticks in my throat and makes me gag/throw up/constantly have to spit. There's a term for it but I've forgotten what it is. Quite common in pregnancy. Some women swear by using Netti pots or something like that. Gps can provide a saline spray but doesn't help me.
I know what you mean about it feeling like an achievement...I'm in week 11 of sickness and relieved I've made it into second tri especially with my preg history. Sorry you're feeling unwell now. I've given up eating in evenings. It always comes up so if I do manage anything it's toast and then nothing after 4.30/5.

I'm exhausted as been up since 4.30 but can't shut off. Plus I drank a little fanta as feeling like I need sugar. One more day and I can rest for the weekend. Can't wait!
