I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I know it's awful. I still can't stand things from being sick 15 years ago with twins ...
Wow I feel old Blush

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 11/10/2015 13:28

I had a vanilla frappe from weatherspoons the other day (only £1.49) ! And it www really nice, although it came up it wasn't acidy if that makes sense?
Wow spandau 15 year old twins! That's good babysitters right on standby though?!

LucindaE · 11/10/2015 18:22

Welcome to new thread, everyone. Meerka Great reassuring advice as ever. Brilliant.
ICan't I so agree with others. Don't blame yourself for being irritable. You are a hero for dealing with lupus and Hyperemesis. Never apologise for moaning; that's what this thread is for.
Heavenscent And again I agree with others. Dismayed by insensitive boss; certainly, your doctor needs to emphasize to your workplace that you need something in the nature of a staggered return, or you'll have a relapse, which they won't like.
Ginger Your boss's 'forgetful' attitude is very to the power of ten annoying...Forgot to congratulate you on your girl.
Greyhorses Really feel for you over hideous nausea.
Reebok Poor you with those headaches. What does your GP say about them? Are they migraine type (back of the head, or on one side, or in one eye)? I had them until fourteen weeks, when they vanished along with the other torment, but I didn't have a toddler, and so it was much easier.
Corabell Fingers crossed it is milder this time. An anxious time for you, waiting.
Ems Poor you, still suffering so late. You are very stoic.
I hope spandau shoop MotherofPearl* and everyone is coping today.
Apologies if I've rudely overlooked anyone.

Thank you Lucinda xSmile

TwoDrifters · 11/10/2015 19:07

Hello all! Well done for keeping going!

Thanks for the new thread LucindaE

Well I'm 28 weeks now and the nausea is still coming and going. I'll have a "good" few days and feel ok then be stunningly sick for apparently no reason at all!

But each day is one day closer to D-day and I know we can all make it! Flowers

Reebok · 11/10/2015 19:09

Yep that makes sense Icant.

Think it's migraines Lucinda. Had them last time too. Mainly back of head...only thing that helps is darkness and silence...can't get that on weekends though. Perks of hg eh! Another day is almost done...once dd is asleep bedtime for me!

LucindaE · 11/10/2015 19:56

TwoDrifters Oh dear, that sounds like a very undecided improvement.
Did you say you could work from home?
Reebok Remind me of the meds you're on; Ondansetron, I hear, can make migraines worse, though I suppose it's a balancing act and that's just anecdotal evidence from me. It's awful keeping going with pounding head and sickness; gentle cyber pats on offer.

MotherofPearl · 11/10/2015 20:00

Reebok, I totally understand about coming to fear food and drink. Sometimes it just feel worth the risk. But strawberry frappe sounds delicious (so does Icant's vanilla frappe) and can't imagine it would be too bad coming up. Hope you have a better night tonight.
I've had a mixed day. Morning was OK but afternoon was terrible: horrific nausea and acid voms. I was hoping to work towards a phased return to work at the end of the month when I'll be 13 weeks, but can't quite believe I'll be able to. Especially if the spitting doesn't stop!

Reebok · 11/10/2015 20:07

Thanks Lucinda and Mop. Yes I'm on ondansetron...I've heard the same. It really does suck!

Depending on how I feel about leaving the house tomorrow, I may attempt Starbucks.

Gentle hugs to you Mop. That sounds awful. Know what you mean about returning to work and the spitting. Trying not to think about work just yet though although I think I will probably have to return after half term...really hoped I would feel better by now and be able to hold down more...I am either 11 or 12 weeks....still feeling horrendous.

Meerka · 11/10/2015 20:54

twodrifters i found it really reassuring myself to get to 28-30 weeks ,... should something happen much too soon, your baby has very good chances of surviving now.

wishing everyone a peaceful night. Thinking of you all. The misery will lift in the end. Each half-day is a bit closer.

Melleebacca · 11/10/2015 21:26

Hi All - Reebok and Icant - one of the things recommended to me by my midwife, was milkshakes. They're actually pretty good nutrient wise for HG (calcium, calories, liquid). I started being able to stomach them at about 12w. Plus, you can have a small amount, and then put it in the fridge for later. The cold really soothes a sore throat too!

She also recommended hot chips. Carbs are quickly absorbed by the gut, and thus if you can keep them down for a hour, you've gotten some food value out of it. But again, calorie rich. HG is one of the few times you really have to eat all the bad stuff, just to be able to get enough energy in small amounts of food to sustain a mummy and a baby.

Hope everyone gets a good night sleep!

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 11/10/2015 21:36

That's a good idea mellee I never thought of milkshakes. Mmmmm.
I shall be stocking up and taking sips.
Hope everyone has a good nights sleep and a better day tomorrow .
(Although I seem to think tomorrow will be better for us all and it never seems to be :( )

eallison88 · 12/10/2015 04:42

I remember others have raved about frappes and the like in the past, so definitely worth a try if you can stomach dairy (I couldn't, which ruled all sorts out!)

About the 'food fear'... totally understand it! I think most women with HG get it to one degree or another. I was worried I wouldn't want to eat again once baby arrived, but your mind very quickly heals itself. Bizarrely,I'm now having to avoid tomato - it seems to make eallijunior extra vomity!

Reebok · 12/10/2015 09:48

Thanks Mellee...will try the frappe if I can get the strength to go out today. Body feels very weak. Chips are a big fat no for me. Painful when it comes up and only stays down 5 minutes.

Ealli it sounds like your Lo might have reflux...it's common if mother had it in pregnancy and after coming off meds, baby struggles to adjust. Dd still has reflux at 2 years old...I'm told she will grow out of it. Look out for things like arching his back during/after feeds, crying when laying down flat...usually a sign of painful trapped wind. Also they may feel the need to feed non stop to take away the burning feeling which doesn't help and makes them feel worse. Reflux doesn't always result in vomiting...silent reflux children show the signs but don't vomit.

Meerka · 12/10/2015 10:50

quite some people have found that crappy McD's burgers etc are stomach-able. Maybe they are so highly processed that they don't take much more processing in your tummy .... But it could be worth a try

LucindaE · 12/10/2015 11:13

Mellee I so agree about chips and milkshakes when past the worst . I also hazard that cheap ice cream has helped many, and jelly, and cold custard for some; kids' foods.
Reebok and eallison It's interesting about the baby and reflux and meds. My daughter had appalling 'Three Months' Colic' and puked a fair bit, and I hadn't had the conventional meds (I was massively helped by acupunture when in a terrible state, or I suppose I would have gone down the well trodden route of admission/fluids/meds finally given; but I was lucky there; I gather it doesn't work so well in general).
MotherofPearl You mustn't rush back to work, that sounds much too early, my goodness, and you are right to take that as a warning. Normal Mother Hen speech.
I hope everyone is coping today.

OP posts:
Reebok · 12/10/2015 12:41

I've tried burgers too but they are awful coming up.

Well I made it out. Couldn't travel to starbucks...was too far but made it to costa and got myself a strawberry cooler and cheese toasty. Don't know if it will stay down but yum!

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 12/10/2015 12:46

Mmmm sounds yummy! Hope it stays down :)

LucindaE · 12/10/2015 13:09

Here's hoping, Reebok. Brave of you to venture out. You certainly mustn't think of rushing back to work either, particularly as didn't you say you are a teacher?
I can't How are things?

OP posts:
ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 12/10/2015 13:16

Think I've a kidney infection lucinda , gp wants me admitted but it's just not possible with childcare so going to try oral antibiotics. I can't even tolerate folic acid so will see how it goes down! How are you?
On a positive note had my 12 week scan through, 30th oct so not long to wait :)

bugista · 12/10/2015 13:21

Hope your food stays down Reebok!

I had an absolute breakdown yesterday - proper ugly crying and sobbing - poor OH! It's a bit ridiculous because I'm a lot better than I was but I'm finding the constant nausea just really gets me down. I feel like everyone expects me to be much better because I'm not vomming that much, but I still feel horrendous and it's just so EXHAUSTING all the time.

I've gone back to work today - they are letting me work from home and just in the afternoons which is great. It's daunting though, already have had a million emails!

In happier news, I had a private gender scan on Sat and we're having a baby boy. I didn't mind either way but it's nice to be able to 'picture' bub a little more...and not just think of baby as this vampire thing. ;-)

How is everyone doing today? I think someone asked about when things got better - I noticed a real improvement in the vomming at 14 weeks. xx

bugista · 12/10/2015 13:23

Icant so sorry to hear about your kidney infection - I hope you manage to keep the antibiotics down but if not please do get admitted if you poss can! Exciting about the 12 week scan, I found that really helped to keep me going. :)

Reebok · 12/10/2015 13:35

The frappe is really helping my nausea. Wish I got two!

Home again and resting now. Yes I'm a primary school teacher Lucinda. Really think I will have to try to go back after half term though...I will be 14 or 15 weeks.

Congrats on the scan bugista. Can't wait to get to your stage. Icant that's awful you poor thing. Hope the antibiotics work.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 12/10/2015 14:16

Ah congrats on the scan and having a boy bugista! I'm so excited for the scan. I wish I could get admitted just so I get some respite but it's not possible with childcare as DP works ridiculous shifts and no one else to have DS :(
Ooh that's good news about the frappe lucinda you'll have to bulk buy them and keep them in the fridge haha :)

Ems10000 · 12/10/2015 14:37

bugista sounds like we had similar days yesterday! I know exactly what you mean, I haven't been sick for weeks but the constant nausea is sometimes worse. On a positive note I feel so much better today, relatively normal and I actually have some energy - it feels very odd!! I hope everyone else is having a good day. reebok I hope you manage to keep your toastie and drink down. Cheese toasties were all I could keep down for weeks in my first pregnancy, actually sent oh out to buy a toastie maker!! Smile
