I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thanks everyone. Meerka I don't have the energy for it tonight. I've asked my team leader to look into it tomorrow and said I want a meeting with HR on Monday (when I'm next in) if they insist on doing it. I'll hopefully summon up the energy to research it throughly between now and then!

MotherofPearl · 08/09/2015 20:46

Meant to say, Peanut, if your ketones are ++ maybe you need to be admitted for rehydration?
And Heaven, sorry about the painful constipation. I hope you won't find this too horrifying but a previous sufferer on an earlier thread who had terrible constipation from ondanestron resorted to a home enema kit. Apparently you can buy one from Boots online and she found it really helped. Not saying it's for everyone but maybe worth a try?

eallison88 · 08/09/2015 21:56

heaven give the lactulose time to take affect and try to supplement it with any fruit you can (peaches being my go to, tinned more than fresh, but different strokes for different folks!)

The lady who's tried the drugs unsuccessfully, sorry can't remember who, don't give up yet. As others have said, You've not yet tried ondansetron. I went thru 4 meds before ondansetron, the others didn't touch the sickness whereas the ondansetron gave me something resembling a life (ie I didn't feel like complete death all the time, just crap most of the time but able to eat and drink a little). I think I'm in a good nhs trust here though, as went from diagnosis to ondansetron in 5 days! Admittedly I was incredibly ill by time of diagnosis and admission and then had 2 emergency out of hours gp trips in 5 days. But the ondansetron gave me enough juice to think I could go back to work (managed 2 short days before realising I was being daft!) So it really can make a difference. My advice: fight for it for all you can.

Wishing everyone a gentle night (and maybe even some labour pains for me and lilac!).

Ems10000 · 08/09/2015 22:24

heaven I second fruit, as much as you can eat! Good luck eallison hope you aren't waiting much longer. I'm getting fed up of people asking me about baby names, I just don't have any patience at the moment and it's as if everyone needs to know right now! I have a friend due 6 weeks after me, she has her name picked and refers to her baby as if she is here. Maybe it's just because I'm fed up but I find it odd and want my baby here before I name him!!

eallison88 · 09/09/2015 06:13

We've finally settled on names (girls was hardest!!) But we aren't teng anyone til its born... it amazes me how many people are surprised by this "oh, I won't tell anyone", "what sort of names?" Etc Etc! The kids at school are better than the adults I know!

MotherofPearl · 09/09/2015 08:07

Passing through train station on my way to work so have just popped into Boots and bought Buccastem over the counter. The package insert info is a bit alarming, especially where it clearly says do not take in pregnancy. Some meds say 'if you are pregnant consult your doctor before taking this medicine' but this seems more emphatic. I've just popped one under my lip as imstructed as I need to not feel sick at work today, but hoping for reassurance from Meerka about safety.
That's so cheeky about people intrusively asking about names Ealli. Seems like a private thing between the parents until baby is born.
Hope everyone has a bearable day

Reebok · 09/09/2015 08:21

Hi all,

Hope you're all surviving. I'm currently in hospital and missing my LO like mad. I went in yesterday. Felt awful...ketones...clearly dehydrated. So they gave me a whole load of fluids, vitamins and also tried ondansetron on me. Worked pretty well through iv. I was able to keep down some food. Also have a water infection so been put on antibiotics. The doctor seems to know what he's on about. He understands hyperemesis and because I've had it before realized he had to work hard to help me. The nurses kept referring to it as morning sickness though. Annoyed me! Doctor said he will prescribe me ondansetron for 7 days but the problem is my gp probably won't do a repeat prescription. I'm meant to have it on top of cyclizine and ranitidine. Too many pills.

Anyway meant to be going home today. My boss was bugging me yesterday with constant calls wanting to know what this means long term. She knows what it means! I have to be signed off! It's not as though she hasn't been through this with me before!

Barmee I'm sorry to hear you're unwell and about work! That sounds awful.

Mop good luck with work today. Hoping hg doesn't kick in for you.

Sorry to anyone rudely overlooked.

MotherofPearl · 09/09/2015 08:43

Reebok, so glad you're being treated and finally getting a little respite. My understanding is that if a hospital consultation prescribes a medication that it's quite straightforward for your GP to go on renewing it. That's what happened with me last time, with my cyclizine prescription. GP never prescribed it but was happy to give me endless repeats without ever seeing me! As for your boss, can't actually believe her callous insensitivity!! Bothering you about work when you're in hospital being treated for serious illness!

eallison88 · 09/09/2015 09:16

reebok good to hear you've been rehydrated and prescribed ondansetron. Try not to think about how many drugs - I've been thru at least 10 diff ones in the last 8 months! I had no problem getting ondansetron represcribed after the consultant at hospital prescribed it for me, so fingers crossed it'll be as easy for you.

BarmeeMarmee · 09/09/2015 09:45

Reebok so glad you're getting help and at least someone understands. Your boss needs a good talking to though. How dare she hassle you in hospital?! Just a thought, could the hospital write a letter to your GP explaining you need ondansetron on repeat for the duration of your pregnancy and then you can present that if you have trouble getting it?

pixieg1rl · 09/09/2015 10:04

Lots of love to all you ladies, I was in your position 5 years ago and it was extremely hard. I hope you have lots of support from here and your families.

Pregnancy Sickness Support are amazing, I wish I'd known about them when I was pregnant. Take the meds, do what you can and don't be hard on yourself if it's not very much. It does end eventually. xx

Ems10000 · 09/09/2015 10:35

reebok good to hear that you are being looked after. Ondanestron has helped me massively on its own, I'm sure if a consultant prescribes it your doctor can just repeat the prescription- speak to the consultant before you leave hospital because you don't want to go backwards once discharged. I am shocked that your boss would be so inconsiderate, she is obviously being very selfish. I wouldn't take any more calls, send her your sick note and then there are rules regarding acceptable contact which you must both agree on. This is the last thing you need when trying to get better, get plenty of rest and try not to feel guilty x

shoopshoopsong · 09/09/2015 10:52

11 weeks here and really bad. Tried lots of drugs from doctor and homeopath. Had a few days where i was only sick in the mornings and it was amazing. But back to all day every day now. Am not coping well with my 1 year old. I don't have the energy to scroll through the posts but am desperate for more support if anyone wants to be sick buddies via PM

Heavenscent86 · 09/09/2015 12:39

Thanks for all the advice. Ive been and bought some fruit today although my first lot of grapes are not sitting well right now. Also got watermelon to try so we'll see. I really thought I would have to go to the hospital last night it was so severe. Praying the lactulose kicks in soon.
MoP I'm glad you managed to get some buccastem but can't vouch for the safety although my doctor did prescribe it so I presumed it was ok. If you decide to keep taking it I hope it helps.
Reebok I'm very glad you are getting some help. It sounds like you really needed it. You are on the same combination of meds the hospital put me on although I stopped taking the cyclizine as it doesn't help me at all. I hope you are feeling brighter now.

Meerka · 09/09/2015 13:39

shoopshoop welcome.

in haste moP Buccastem -is- safe. It's one of the ones commonly prescribed. It's an 'offlabel" use which means it's not officially covered, but the meds commonly used in HG are ALL 'offlabel'. They've been used on tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of women; certainly cyclizine has been used by millions.

No one dares test meds on pregnant women, that's the problem.

But please don't take it with the prochlorperazine that the doctor prescribed (just sayin' it yet again!) as it's the same stuff but in a different form.

reebok im very relieved to hear you are in hospital. Hope you feel better very soon.

heaven you can get stronger stuff to make you go from the doctor, but I'm afraid I can't remember the name. A lot of people end up using it. At its worst, things can get even worse than an enema ...

Heavenscent86 · 09/09/2015 13:53

Yeah I've heard meerka. That's what I'm scared of. I've read a little about glycerin suppositories which doesn't sound too pleasant but may be worth a try. I think I will go back to the doctors tomorrow and ask for more help. Thank you for the advice.

Reebok · 09/09/2015 15:05

I'm home again. So far the medication is working in the sense that it's cut down the vomiting. Nausea is ongoing though. Feeling very tired and literally just laying in bed. Not very much appeals to me apart from banana and wotsits. Bad heartburn and reflux which is quite painful. The ranitidine doesn't seem to help. Annoyed with dh. He's meant to be helping and has left piles of his dishes stacked up in the sink. Bloody men!

Sorry to hear so many are feeling unwell.

Heaven, when I was pregnant with dd, I couldn't 'go' for 15 days straight. I was in so much pain. I finally tried some apple juice. While I ended up vomiting, it also helped me to 'go' to the loo. Might be worth trying. I literally had to sip the juice all day.

Heavenscent86 · 09/09/2015 16:07

How much ranitidine have they put you on reebok? Glad you are feeling a little better. Try to rest as much as you can.
Thanks for the advice about the juice. I might have to try and get some of that down although it will certainly be a challenge.

Meerka · 09/09/2015 17:01

reebok .... (you eat combinations in pregnancy you would never normally eat don't you?). Glad you are feeling a little better.

heaven ... are figs a possible stay-down food? they would help you go

eallison88 · 09/09/2015 17:07

reebok eay whatever you fancy and don't worry about what it is. If it appeals and stays down for a bit, roll with it. My lovely midwife told me I'd all I could ready was Mars bars then all I should try to easy was Mars bars. Also, omeprazole is stronger than ranitidine so it might be worth mentioning to your doctor when you see them that the ranitidine isn't surfing. I tended to pay dumb unless they didn't offer me the alternative I knew existed!

eallison88 · 09/09/2015 17:07

Working not surfing... silly phone!

MotherofPearl · 09/09/2015 17:15

Thanks for the reassurance about Buccastem Meerka. I took one on the train this morning and managed to get through my Away Day with some nausea but no voms (so far), so perhaps it helped.
Really hope you manage to get proper rest at home Reebok.
Welcome to Shoop. There's lots of support and advice on here so do stick around.

MotherofPearl · 09/09/2015 17:17

And thanks to Heaven for letting me know that I could Bucastem over the counter. Gives me a feeling of security having it to hand.

Heavenscent86 · 09/09/2015 17:36

No problem MoP. I hope it helps until you can see your GP.

shoopshoopsong · 09/09/2015 18:20

Thankyou for the welcomes, have read through thread now and relieved to hear others don't mind taking Buccastem as that's one I have tried (and worried about) also whoever recommended the keytone peesticks Thankyou DH just bought me some. I'm 2nd darkest block on the stick and feeling like I really can't cope today do you think another out of hours doctor visit is sensible tonight?
