I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

reebok how are you?

MotherofPearl · 08/09/2015 11:19

Thanks Heaven, it was me who tried (and failed) to get cyclizine over the counter - my DP went for me. I've not vomited so far (fingers crossed), but feel a bit queasy. I wanted to have cyclizine to hand to take at the first sign of sickness, but now I guess I will just have to wait for my GP appt at the end of the month (or for sickness to start, whichever happens sooner). I really don't know what to expect, whether I'll bad as bad as in my 2nd pregnancy, or more manageable as in my first pregnancy, or what.
I really hope Reebok is OK, hopefully hooked up to some IV meds and hydration and feeling a bit better.

Peanutbutternutter419 · 08/09/2015 11:57

Hello again, sorry I haven't been on for a few days. I had a really good day on Saturday and even managed to get out for a walk with my ds! However by Sunday pm felt terrible again and ended up in on IV as went so downhill so quickly!
Am trying to catch up on thread now.
I really hope Reebok has gone in and got fluids as she sounded terrible bless her!
MoP Congratations!! Hopefully you won't end up too bad this time around fx for you! Smile

Meerka · 08/09/2015 12:22

Oh heck, are you feeling better now peanut? how long were you in?

Thinking of everyone

Peanutbutternutter419 · 08/09/2015 12:31

They kept me in Sunday overnight and hope yesterday lunch time, still feeling shitty and holed up in bed but at least I have managed to eat a small bit of toast and an apple today!
I have looked into acupuncture as my midwife recommended it to me. She is pg at the moment and said she suffered with bad ms and it helped her. Anyone else tried it?
I will seriously try anything to feel better! Thanks Meerka.
Hope everyone else is doing ok?

Meerka · 08/09/2015 12:36

mother Hen tried it and it worked -wonders- for her. She may have been lucky because it doesn't work for many people (sorry). But it looks like if it does, it really works well.

She improved massively. I may be completely misremembering this, but I think she may have had 3 sessions and the HG pretty well went away for the rest of the pregnancy. When she's back, maybe she can tell you more

Peanutbutternutter419 · 08/09/2015 13:05

Thanks Meerka, that is slightly reassuring! I have booked a session for Thursday and will see how that goes.
Hopefully MotherHen will confirm! Smile

Meerka · 08/09/2015 13:57

I'm sure she will when she\s back =)

MotherofPearl · 08/09/2015 18:00

Just had my first vom. Sad Just bile/foam but still not a great sign of things to come.
Peanut, I tried acupuncture during my first pregnancy, when I suffered bad MS but not HG (at least not diagnosed). I'm afraid it did nothing for me, but as Meerka says, Lucinda was hugely helped by it so worth a shot for sure.

Meerka · 08/09/2015 18:02

Oh dear MoP.

can you get to your doctor now and get pre-emptive meds??

Peanutbutternutter419 · 08/09/2015 18:05

Oh no! Can your GP not get you in before then? what about if you ring and say its pregnancy related and an emergency? Or even get a telephone appt?
If you suffered last time they should easily be able to look up your record and prescribe something over the phone?

Hope it is just a little set back and doesn't progress to worse things!

I'm guessing reebok went in as she hasn't reported back recently.

MouldyPeach · 08/09/2015 18:22

Sounds like everyone's having a bad time of it :(

Had an awful couple of days here, not got out of bed since gp appt on Monday. Had a new doctor who was nice and thorough, tested urine and bp etc. prescribed stemetil (prochlorperazine) but it also hasn't worked, been vomiting and nauseous as ever. I'm not sure what to do now as three medications haven't worked and I'm keeping down enough liquids to not be officially dehydrated (NAD on all urine tests so far) so no need/reason for hospital. Don't know if I should suck it up and accept this is how it's going to be and stay in bed (neglecting my children and work) or go back to gp yet again. I have a MW appt on Friday but she is very disinterested and unconcerned about it. I keep thinking I'm lucky to have such an amazing dp to do everything for me and the kids but if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be in this pickle Wink

Heavenscent86 · 08/09/2015 18:26

MoP I don't know if it's any help but in my local superdrug pharmacy today I noticed you can get buccastem over the counter. Could that help you out at all until getting to your GP? I was prescribed it early on with my sickness.

Meerka · 08/09/2015 18:32

buccastem and prochlorperazine are the same thing, it's just that one form of it you take as a tablet and the other stays in the mouth just under your lip iirc.

Different people respond to different meds, and sadly some people don't respond to much at all :/ Can you ask your doctor for Ondansetron? it's the best (though it, uh, bungs you up) but it's also very expensive and different health authorities vary on their approach to prescribing it.

I do think that it's worth going back to your doctor peach, definitely, but ... sadly, it may be the way things are going to be for a while. Most people find an improvement between weeks 14 - 22, but until that time it can be a grim a time. Planning how you'll handle it can help; also arranging to get as much rest as you possibly can. Everyone, - everyone- finds that the more they do, the worse the HG is.

MouldyPeach · 08/09/2015 18:48

Thanks meerka I guess it's worth trying everything before giving up, perhaps I'll be offered the holy grail of ondansetron, he did mention it last time but I didn't mention it as was feeling spaced out and also forgot how pronounce it Blush. I also need to keep getting my sick notes renewed so if have to go to gp any way I suppose.

I'm lucky to be able to get plenty of rest but of course that brings its own turmoil of guilt and over thinking, gosh hyperemesis is great isn't it.

MotherofPearl · 08/09/2015 19:04

Thanks all for your concern. Heaven, if I can get to a pharmacy I'll try to get bucastem. I'm meant to be at a work Away Day tomorrow, giving a short presentation too, so unless the vomming persists I'm going to have to go to work. Although I also seem to have picked up DS's cold, so could ring in sick on those grounds and then try to get an emergency GP appt. Trouble is I've only been sick once so I don't imagine I'll get prescribed anything.

Meerka · 08/09/2015 19:29

peach don't take buccastem and the tablets the doctor gave you. They're the same thing in different forms and you could be taking a much too high dose, if you do.

Heavenscent86 · 08/09/2015 19:34

I posted on here before about suffering constipation as a result of taking ondansetron. Anyway my doctor has prescribed lactulose and I took my first dose today. Still constipated at the moment but it's agony now to attempt anything and my tummys making terrible growly noises. I'm guessing the lactulose isn't working yet but is it normal to have so much pain?

Peanutbutternutter419 · 08/09/2015 19:40

Oh peach sorry to hear your feeling awful! I have found the same with the meds, nothing so far seems to have worked.
Question...I have taken metachlopromide at 3.30pm today but thinking of switching to the promethazine tonight but I read up that you shouldn't mix the 2. In your opinions, would 6/7 hours be long enough In between to technically not be taking them together?

MoP as you have been poorly before, would they not prescribe something as precaution?

BarmeeMarmee · 08/09/2015 19:52

Sorry to hear that everyone is suffering so much at the moment. Reebokreally hoping you're in hospital being rehydrated. MoP sorry the vomiting has started already. Fingers crossed if you get meds now it will help even if it doesn't prevent it totally.

I've had a pretty shit day to be honest. I've got my daughters cold and feeling pretty crap on top of HG. Then I got home from work to a letter from my HR department telling me they're docking me 2.5 days pay for the time I was signed off sick with HG a couple of weeks back. Which I can't afford. Have had to submit my intention to take maternity leave form too and am feeling really miserable that it looks like I'll only be able to have 6 months off as well. Just all a bit crap really.

Meerka · 08/09/2015 19:55

heaven i'm sorry, I don't know.

peanut No, apparently it's a bad combination.

I'm guessing now ... but promethazine's little brother, cyclizine, takes 2-3 days to build up in the system. Promethazine might be the same.

So actually I think you need to speak to a pharmacist (they know more about the effect of drugs on the body than doctors, it's what they specialize in) before taking any more metoclopramide, I'm afraid. Ask them what they recommend. (and please let us know what they say).

Peanutbutternutter419 · 08/09/2015 20:20

Thanks Meerka, will call the pharmacist tomorrow but hold off on any more meds tonight.
Heaven I don't know if this answers your question but my da was on and off lactulose prior to his milk allergy diagnosis and it always took a few days to get things going so it may just be that you need to wait for it to build up a bit. Lactulose is very gentle so you could try upping the amount?
I am not sure about your pain but I nearly passed out from constipation pain in my first pg. Maybe ring your midwife if your worried?

I have gone downhill further today and my ketostix are reading a ++ so great night ahead of me! Trying my hardest to keep water down but it seems that for every sip I take, a gulp is coming up!! Horrid horrid hg!!

MotherofPearl · 08/09/2015 20:21

Oh Barmee, that's awful. The docking your pay for pregnancy-related sickness does not sound legal to me. I'm no expert but if you feel up to it I think you should challenge them on this. Cold + HG is surely cruel and unusual punishment. I have a cold too which felt bad enough with just one vom.

Peanutbutternutter419 · 08/09/2015 20:22

Barmee so sorry to hear about your crap day and even worse about your inconsiderate HR dept.
It's so tough thinking about mat leave as it pays so awfully. And it should be the one time we get to sit back and enjoy our babies!

Meerka · 08/09/2015 20:31

barmee Im sorry, crossposted there

Im sure that's not legal. Are you feeling well enough, or could you ask your husband, to check up on that under the Equal Opportunities Act? Im sure there's a lot of info on line about it.
