could well be Braxton Hicks - they can be painful and uncomfortable sometimes (talking as someone who rushed into hospital convinced labour had started early - with DD2 not even first time round!!)
With DD1 I had grumbling rumbling braxton hicks for several days before they swapped into proper early labour contractions. I found that if you walk for a while, Braxton Hicks ease off whereas real contractions keep coming regularly and get stronger with exercise. Not a midwife though so if concerned, speak to a professional. Good luck xx

good advice from lemon tart

when labour starts..it doesn't stop...but you can have lots of contractions on and off leading up to the real thing

when the pains increase in intensity, increase in length and the time between them diminishes, that's labour. Often with backache, and discomfort....

it will happen soon enough!

DebbsyandBibby · 25/11/2006 11:22

lemon ive had bh these are far far worse hopefully its what lula says a series of contractions before the main event.... going for a walk now with dh.

bath is good idea,i kept getting in and out as a pp said if its real they wont stop but if it is real the bath is good pain relief.i spent last 4 weeks of my last pregnancy in bath!!!!!!!

harpsichordcarrier · 25/11/2006 11:25

hi there, how many weeks are you?
they certainly sound like contractions but they need to be strong and regular before you can say you are in labour...
a walk is a good idea if you want to make more progress
good luck!

lulumama · 25/11/2006 11:27

amniotic fluid smells sweet....put a pad in your knickers and sniff

FGS!! i have had too many pad sniffing conversations this week..!!!!!!

NICE says 96 hours from waters going until you must be induced...

PMSL Lulu

Debbsy, I have left a message for you on the Nov thread, but wanted you to know I am following this one as well, well I'm not, I am going to go and laze(is that a word? I think my brain is fried) on the sofa but I will be checking this thread along with the others

Rosydingdongmerrily · 25/11/2006 13:29

I get tortured with braxton hicks I get them LOADS already and I'm 25 weeks only! At the end they are so frequent and strong I have to breath through them! Once labour starts for me it is very different, I feel a sharp stabbing niggle down below which builds and fades and keeps coming. I am convinced all the braxton hickses give me a really quick final bit of labour! Good luck! Before you know it your baby will be here! Exciting!!!

DebbsyandBibby · 25/11/2006 20:18

Woohoo, Debbsy, waiting for news!
Sorry if no-one knows me, am a serial lurker on all threads.
God bless mumsnet!
How about you NJ?
When my labour started, I had back-ache, with bumptightening and lots of downwards pressure, couldn't sit still, and spent alot of time on the loo!
Oh yeah, and had been pants sniffing for two/three days!

shhhh · 25/11/2006 20:23

If your waters have gone then you need to speak to your mw mainly as stated below so they are sure and ensure you deliver within the agreed time...my waters went with dd and I spoke to my mw who advised me to come down. They wanted to be sure as if they had I was prone to infections etc. Luckily they had gone and even more so as soon as I stepped out of dh's car at the maternity unit ...apparently only my hind waters..! . That was the start of labour for me.......hopefully I get a good indication with the next one due in Jan07 .

Let us know how you get on. xx

lulumama · 25/11/2006 20:24
