I really really need to go to the toilet :(

I am 10 weeks and I haven't done a poo in over a week . My tummy is so sore I've been so sick I think I've become quite dehydrated (very concentrated urine also).

I need some home remedies to try tomorrow . Failing that I will call my GP on Monday and ask for a prescription for lactulose .

I'm on prescription stuff but when I want to avoid taking it I try dried prunes, dates and apricots. Lots of greens, spinach and broccoli and anything that is full of fiber (apples, grapes, beans ect) helps.

Dehydration could be definitely making things worse too so try drink little and often, If it helps fresh lemon in hot water can help things along too.

My DM (who is a nurse) often recommends warm baths or a warm flannel on your tummy/lower back. Hope this helps

Also, stop taking your pregnancy multi vit for a few days if it contains iron and switch to just folic acid and vit d. Lots of fruit juice can help if you can stomach it and bizarrely, I also find a large, very well brewed cup of tea (with caf, not decaf) can work wonders. Good luck!

Dehydration will certainly not help so make sue you drink plenty. Like apple i have a variety of things that will get things moving without a doubt. Mcdonalds breakfast is one, as is a decent coffee or two, or a large amount of fresh orange juice.

For future prevention, drink plenty and adjust diet to include something like branflaks every day, with dried fruit on top. That works for me. I absolutely cannot take pregnancy vitamins either.

A little tip from my midwife when I was having my ds was to wash my bum hole with loads of soap, in and around the hole. It really worked. I find eating slot of diary helps me. I'm 19 weeks and I am bit blocked up at the moment, it's not a nice feeling is it.

You can buy lactulose over the counter. Don't wait until tomorrow!

Also i can't believe I am sharing this when I had very bad constipation, it was like there was poo right there waiting to come out but it just wouldn't. I read on here to use some vaseline around bottom and then ugh insert thumb into vagina and gently ease the poop down and out by pushing on the vaginal wall.

It did work, and got a very hard bit of poo out which cleared the way for the rest of the build up.

Sorry for that but it might help others.....

For future prevention, chia seeds everyday. Stir into yoghurt, sprinkle on a salad. They're amazing.

With my last pregnancy, I suffered with constipation and found that drinking prune juice each morning helped. A small glass should be enough to help things along.

I'm not sure Lactulose will be effective since you are so badly constipated. A glycerine suppository will be better (don't mention you're pregnant as they won't sell them to you - but they ARE safe in pregnancy) or a prescription for Movicol from the GP. But I'd try the suppository first.

Prune juice works wonders for me....I used the Ella 's kitchen prune purée for DS when he had the same problem.
Be careful with chia - it swells in your stomach. There are strict regulations for food manufacturers about how much can be used in

I second the thumb trick. I actually posted about it on another thread yesterday.

It sounds pretty damn gross but it beats having a huge hard poo stuck in your bum hole for days.

I wish I'd appreciated my pre-pregnancy regular bowel movements more. Something I utterly took for granted and now look back admiringly my amazing pooping skills!
I second the prune juice recommendation. I have a small glass before bed and another small
one in the morning with breakfast. I find fruit & fibre with a sprinkling of all bran ontop helps with getting things moving. And I munch on a few fried apricots throughout the day too. Plus lots of water to help with keeping things soft (sorry ????)
Try not to over do it all in one go. Last Sunday mornings drank 3 glasses of prune juice, had a bowl of All Bran and a big handful of dried apricots and ventured out to choose a pram in Mothercare. Let's just say I was very happy they have toilets!

I found a regular dose of fibogel invaluable in my second pregnancy. I wish I had realised that in my first pregnancy.

Water water water(and maybe some milk mixed with prune juice if you can stomach it). Walking is good too. And try not to strain!

Thanks for the advice everyone . I've been trying to drink more water today and I had a big bowl of bran flakes for breakfast (with a dribble of milk cos who wants to vomit milk ha) . Didn't realise you could buy lactulose over the counter .

I will get DH to bring me in prune juice after work and have some before bed hopefully that will get things moving overnight .

I've never really been constipated before even in previous pregnancies , didn't realise how hideous it is

Im not pregnant (boo) but I suffer with it frequently and it is horrendous so I feel your pain Maya. Forgot to mention to try pick up some flax seed if you can, and sprinkle it in things you eat as it's a big help too

Fybogel is just a fibre supplement and totally ineffective for severe constipation. Beware of bran flakes as well - unless you're drinking gallons of water, bran just sets hard in the gut and only makes things worse.
