I am 10 weeks and I haven't done a poo in over a week . My tummy is so sore Sad I've been so sick I think I've become quite dehydrated (very concentrated urine also).

I need some home remedies to try tomorrow . Failing that I will call my GP on Monday and ask for a prescription for lactulose .

The thumb trick is definiteky worth a try. I have had to do it rather too often in this pregnancy and I honestly don't think any amount of prune juice would have helped without it. It's not nice but it works, and the relief is worth it!

Bonsoir · 05/07/2015 16:24

Suppositories. By a very long way the easiest solution.

mayaknew · 05/07/2015 16:38

I think there's no way around it I'm going to have to perform the thumb trick .

I will go in a nice hot bath tonight then try it out .

I'm quite surprised how many people know about the thumb trick. I genuinely thought I had 'invented' it.

Perhaps I'm just not the brilliant genius I think I am Grin

Sparrowlegs248 · 05/07/2015 21:04

I think MN invented it! I put it of for a day and a half.

Re branflakes, they are the thing that keeps me regular, no setting in my tummy! I definitely know if I've missed a dose!

GotTheKey · 05/07/2015 21:08

You poor thing. I was the same when I was 8-10 weeks pregnant. Senna was the only thing that helped me. My midwife said it was fine but have seen others on here say it's not ?! Anyway am 21 weeks now and baby is fine so it didn't do any harm!

1wokeuplikethis · 05/07/2015 21:51

Ugh. 9 weeks and haven't pooed since Thursday Envy
Delighted and slightly scarred to have discovered the thumb trick on here and happy to report in my case it got rid of a bit of blockage. Hopefully setting the path clear for the rest to follow tomorrow.

Really hope so as I'm seeing a bum doctor/piles specialist in the morning....

Hot water with a slice of lemon always does the trick for me

ARV1981 · 05/07/2015 22:31

Bran flakes with dried fruit works for me. Not too much milk. Drink lots of water.

Turquoiseblue · 06/07/2015 05:46

I find eating dried prunes easier that prune juice.

You can also make a compote recipe - soak 4oz or dried prunes, 4 oz of dried apricots, and 4 oz of dried raisins and cranberries overnight in hot/ just boiled water. Drain and blitz with hand blender - I use as a topping for brown bread or on porridge/ cereal or with yogurt/ granola. (Also can be stirred into baby's porridge and brilliant for any (weaned) babies with same issue .... Got it from a baby reside book!!

Also any of -kiwis and oranges or grapes or plums -daily are brilliant

Lactulose was effective for me at that stage too but I find with regular fluid and the above changes I don't need it.

A walk helps things move in the right direction too.

Hope you feel better - it s horrible .

fiercebadrabbit · 06/07/2015 09:38

suppositories will do the trick

TeenieDeenie · 06/07/2015 09:45

Maya I was feeling exactly like you and the pharmacist at Boots gave me lactulose. I took one 15 ml spoon before dinner that evening and it worked within two hours. Just a word of warning though - as you have been so backed up for quite a few days you will have a lot of wind that needs to come out too, and it will smell, really bad! The relief will be worth it though. Now if I'm feeling a bit backed up, I just take a few teaspoons of lactulose with my evening meal and it does the trick. Good luck!

mayaknew · 06/07/2015 21:38

Ok so last night I tried the thumb trick and it did shift a little bit . I tried some prune juice but I just vomited it back up again Sad

I took Senna last night and I've managed to do another bit tonight . I'm going to take two more Senna tonight and if I don't go properly in the morning I'm going to try and get a suppository

Senna isn't safe in pregnancy. No stimulant laxatives are, because they cause guy cramps that could trigger contractions.

FeelTheNoise · 06/07/2015 22:09

I had a lot of constipation in early pg, and the only thing that worked was califig

mayaknew · 06/07/2015 22:28

I looked it up and it said it was safe . It also doesn't say anything on the packet about pregnancy .

Pregnacare did this to me. It was awful.

WombOfOnesOwn · 06/07/2015 22:56

Magnesium!!!! Take a double dose of magnesium supplements and you will find this problem resolves itself.

WombOfOnesOwn · 06/07/2015 22:57

(When I forget my double dose of magnesium in the evening, I wake up totally blocked....it's very easy to tell when it's been skipped! It seriously works better than stool softeners or anything else I have tried. Used it on advice of a midwife friend.)

Congratulations!!!

I have never found dried fruit/bran does anything for me (not pregnant and never have been, but my pre-conception vitamins don't sit well!) I will eat heaps of Yarden humous with some oat cakes. It HAS to be Yarden though as it has lots of olive oil, not the shitty regular tescos humous.

Cheshirehello79 · 07/07/2015 14:10

When I saw a dietician as I need to understand what I need to eat whilst pregnant and lots bit of weight as wasn't too well first trimester this is what was recommended to me

Make sure you have fibre early in the morning with a banana at least or dried fruit especially if you're on pregnancy vitamin with iron on them.

Do add on your vitamin some omega 3 it helps baby's brain development ( baby) and helps mother ( your bowls)

Eat plenty of fruits ( well your 5 a day at least) and try beans ( baked beans are perfect for your bowls add with a jacket ( bingo)

Drink plenty of fluids water/ fruit juice - just be a bit careful on fruit juice as some contain high content of sugar.

  • I was given a little book that recommended all sorts of foods and touch wood I'm low in iron and currently on supplements but ( tmi) I have my daily boo everyday .

Hope this helps
