Exciting news small!! Best of luck for a smooth labour! Can't wait to hear about the baby!!

Sorry to hear people are having growth concerns. Little lots of luck for the scan this afternoon Flowers

Just got back from the hospital. Well my actual downs risk is not as bad as it could be, especially given my age (42). I wish they could have told me the actual risk at the start rather than just that I was high risk! It's 1 in 140. Have arranged a private harmony test for tomorrow evening so we'll see what that says (a two-week wait for results).

Apparently I'm anti-M too - another thing to worry about! The midwife said not as bad as being anti-D or anti-K but they will want to do blood tests every 4 weeks to check the levels.

Thanks ladies for your fantastic support. It's great to be on here with such lovely people Smile

Littlelady33 · 30/06/2015 12:14

Zeux that is good to hear and great that you'll have some answers from the harmony test too. Hard to say what I'm actually worried about! Growth - as I find the tape measure and prodding a bit unscientific! And have a real worry he's still breech, but I honestly don't mind how or which way he comes out so long as he's healthy. I just associate scans with fear I think - at 7 and 12 weeks I expected to find out that there was no baby at all, at 20wks I imagined all sorts of problems - so although in trying to be excited about seeing my baby one more time I can't quite manage!

cloudjumper · 30/06/2015 13:03

zeux That sounds encouraging! Did they give you the individual values for your b-HcG and Papp-A? It might well be that it really is just your age that has brought up the risk...

I am watching my phone like a hawk, but I reckon tomorrow might be the earliest that they might call...

Zeuxippe · 30/06/2015 13:11

Thanks little and cloud Smile

The nuchal translucency was 1.4 mm so completely normal. The Papp A was normal too but the beta HCG was 1.93 and the midwife said this is twice as high as they ideally like to see. Metal do I remember you saying it was the hcg levels that pushed up your risk?

Best of luck with your results cloud, will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Metalhead · 30/06/2015 13:18

Yes zeux, my hcg was sky high (9.12! Shock) and my Papp-a a little low. NT measurement was fine for me too, so I'd take some encouragement from that. Good luck with the Harmony, I only had to wait 8 days for my results even though they tell you it takes 14 days on average.

I found this website quite useful, although as with everything, use with caution and a pinch of salt! www.sbpsoftware.com/trisomy-risk-calculator.html
It lets you enter your measurements, age and the protein levels to calculate risks - if you play around with the age, you can at least get an idea how it influences the results!
Disclaimer - I have no idea how accurate/up to date this is, so please do not put too much into it. It's just that I find visual things like that helpful...

Zeuxippe · 30/06/2015 15:48

Thanks envious, metal and cloud that's all really useful information. I'll have a play around on the stats website tomorrow.

Going to try not to worry now until the harmony results come through. Also having another scan when they do the harmony test tomorrow Confused.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

broodylicious · 30/06/2015 16:08

My results came from having the quad test. Apparently this is ridiculously notorious at throwing out inaccurate results so maybe that's why I'm being positive about it all because there's every possibility baby is clear. Especially as the 20 week scan showed no markers (heart issues etc). We considered the harmony test but it can only tell you "yes/no, baby has ds chromosomes"; there is no test or scan that can tell you how severe it is. As there's so many levels of severity, we would not have felt comfortable aborting a child with potentially only very very mild ds. Each to their own though, I know some would feel differently.

Metalhead · 30/06/2015 16:23

cloud that's an interesting calculator; I guess the NHS uses a different formula as according to that I wouldn't have been high risk at all!

Treaclepie19 · 30/06/2015 16:28

Glad you've had some positive news zeux.

How are we all doing with this heat?
It makes me want to cry. Just having to sit still and even then I'm emotional.

Maybe it's not the heat, earlier I put up the mobile on the cot and cried cus of how cute it was :/

metal I am pretty certain that different places use different calculations - when I went to the FMC in London last year, they re-calculated my risk for Downs at 1:6, whereas the NHS had given me 1:17. Again, I think that it's mainly the age-related risk, as there seem to be very different values and ranges, depending on which source you look at...

broodylicious · 30/06/2015 17:07

treacle, I'm effing hating the heat!! Far. Too. Pregnant. Far. Too. Hot. Currently 27 degrees in our lounge, 25 in dd's room. Looks like we could be in for another horridly sticky night.

Littlelady33 · 30/06/2015 17:33

I'm also terrified about bringing a baby home in this heat. Apparently a good room temp for a newborn would be 18-20degrees! Can't get it much below 25.

charlieis30 · 30/06/2015 18:14

Babies are born in hot countries all the time and are fine. I've lived and travelled a lot in Australia and Asia, and they just approach the heat differently. Just make sure you have air circulating, even if it's hot air (e.g. a fan) and don't put too many clothes on the baby. Just a nappy and maybe a short sleeved vest. As long as you're sensible, the baby will be fine. Also, per the Red Cross course I did, learn what a febrile fit is and how to recognise it so you don't freak out completely if it happens! (we will see how much of my advice I take when I actually have ny own LO!)

Metalhead · 30/06/2015 18:17

I love the heat! Though would prefer to be enjoying it next to a pool... Wink

little when DD was born it was quite a hot summer too, I remember she was in just nappies during the day and a light blanket at night, but she was absolutely fine so don't worry too much. Also it looks like it will be cooler again already from the weekend.

dobbythedoggy · 30/06/2015 18:45

A bottles of frozen water in front of a fan and window ledges help to cool a room for anyone suffering with the heat.

I think although can't remember where I got the information from. That it's the desirable temp for babies in a vest/sleepsuit combo.

I certantly remeber summers in the nursery with 25-28 temp in the rooms. We just made sure the children were dressed appropriatly, had lots to drink and were kept as cool as they could. Never saw any ill affects in our babies or toddlers. We struggled much more in -13 winter conditions!

Treaclepie19 · 30/06/2015 19:11

Ugh broody, it's too much.

Ice lollies and water are being consumed at a crazy rate.

The gro egg says just adapt blankets for the heat but I've seen really useful charts about what baby should be wearing for cetrain room temps. I'll see if I can find it.
Just been packing hospital bags (I know I've got 11 and a half weeks left but still)

Trying to work out what baby will need to be wearing to leave hospital in september?

broodylicious · 30/06/2015 19:15

I'm with you, little! Babies can't regulate their own temperature so find extreme weather hard to handle. As much as I want this lo out, I do not fancy newborn suffering in this! I remember the 16-20 degree ideal temp from NCT and thinking how chilly 16 degrees actually feels! Would love that right now though...

Baguettes · 30/06/2015 19:22

Just had to put DS to bed in our room as his room is around 28 degrees. Sake.

broodylicious · 30/06/2015 19:27

Oh my baguettes! Hot hot hot!

Baguettes · 30/06/2015 19:37

I know. The joys of living in an ancient house (approx Jurassic period) with a loft conversion that holds the water tank. It heats up like a bastard up there. Lovely little room otherwise.

Of course he will take hours to go to sleep in our bed. I must own the only four year old who prefers his own bed to ours Hmm

broodylicious · 30/06/2015 20:44

Haha! Yes, our three year old would much prefer to be in our bed and loves our company at night.... Which is why we've just bought a super king size in preparation for four in a bed! Xx
