Can I just state re Doppler.... I would never use it to reassure me for reduced movements... that is very definitely the wrong thing to do. Any change in movements should be checked out. However... after doing a little research I am able to know the sounds I am hearing and therefore I see nothing wrong with me spending a minute or 2 having a listen to the baby with my OH in between scans when I get very anxious. I expressed how anxious I was to know the baby was ok at my 16 weeks appointment and was told bluntly there was no way she would listen to it for me. Some people have the luxury of hearing it at their appointments and if I had I would not have bought a Doppler but I was going out of my mind with worry. I'm under no illusion that if I don't hear a heartbeat then something has gone wrong... the baby moves around a lot and can go into a position where its too difficult to hear. I have recorded the heartbeat once for this purpose so I can still hear it when I want to.

broody I also think they shouldn't be available commerically. The Count the Kicks website has some very interesting info on them.

Amy you may not use it for reassurance but sadly some people do, with awful consquences when they, for example, pick up their own heartbeat and mistake it for the baby's. There is no way to distinguish, and there is no way to accurate measure heart rate or fluctuations, let alone know if it's normal.

Sorry for the rant but they're risky at best and lethal at worst.

Anyway, hope everyone is having a nice day. My nausea has returned a bit which is reassuring (never thought I'd say that). I've gone off tea totally, which I'm missing. My day used to revolve around my next cuppa Brew Envy

Oh and we're nearly on to a new thread. Exciting!

Rafferty I totally understand where you are coming from, I really do. If they are to be used they should only be used sensibly and you should know what you are listening for. Maybe you are right in that if people are not to understand how to use them or use them for the wrong reasons then they should be banned, but mine was a great relief after the midwife refused to check for me which is why I mentioned. I will note from now on not to recommend!!

Re birth plan. I can't really say my midwife has spoken to me much about it at all. I've put it together based on the NCT classes we attended.

CommanderShepard · 10/06/2015 12:40

Yes, I do mean continuous monitoring - I was also induced with DD so had it and it was a pain in the arse. I could move, but only a bit, and it felt very heavy and uncomfortable and kept slipping off. The thing is that I am not finding any evidence that it is actually beneficial in detecting scar rupture (which is what the consultant's registrar was trying to justify it with) and that my pulse rate will rocket long before the baby is in distress. And that it can lead to a hell of a lot of false positives re distress (which makes me wonder if that happened to me - as DD was in distress, according to the monitor, and came out of an EMCS with APGARs of 9, 10, 10. I try not to go down that rabbit hole though - PTSD makes it very not sensible).

Hence wanting to them to show me that it is beneficial. If they can, excellent - hook me up! If not, why are they recommending it? Hopefully the consultant midwife will be able to help with this.

My sister had a good experience with dopplers like Amyyy but they should probably not be on sale or come with very specific instructions and warnings if they cause problems for the majority.

I've no idea what my personal view on them would be. I guess I'd be stressed if I was trying and failing to detect the heartbeat, but to be honest I'd probably find another reason to worry anyway!

Found out last night that a very close friend is also pregnant, she's due the same month as me. Unfortunately this has ramped up the anxiety (which led to the scan booking) as I feel the stakes are even higher now. Not wanting to wish my life away but... Hurry up end of first trimester!!

See you on the new thread, thanks for the warm welcome.

llama I've only done one because it's a very real possibility for me because I won't be induced again and I have requested no interventions such as forceps or ventouse - if I need help getting her out it'll be via the sunroof again. I know it sounds bizarre but it's the only way we can all deal with my PTSD and get out unscathed.

broodylicious · 10/06/2015 13:23

envious, Count The Kicks charity does not ever recommend you count kicks - confusing because of their name but true. Instead, they recommend you record or mentally note what pattern your own baby has developed and what is normal for him or her. If it deviates from it's normal pattern, then it's time to seek help.
