Hi - have 2 kids already 9 and 4 and am pregnant with a third at 43. All is ok so far but feel so aprehensive about being a new mum again at my age - if there are any older new mums about my age out there who can share their experiences with me - I would be so grateful.

ps I have a serious question - does anyone know if its safe to have the flu jab if you're PG?

Angielfc · 01/11/2006 09:56

Morning everyone

Hi Gingerbear, I'm 43 and 10 weeks preggers. Going for my NF + bloods a fortnight today. It's going to cost £185!!! but worth it! I had one with my dd who's 2 now but the price has gone up to £215! at the place I had it last time. I think it should be free for all us 'oldies'! Anyway, luckily enough I didn't have to have an amnio last time as I got really good results...hope I'm as lucky this time.

Sorry guyfoxie, I haven't a clue if it's safe to hve a flu jab when pregnant.

EliBoo · 01/11/2006 11:29

Good luck with the bloods!

Guyfoxie, I meant to ask my OB yesterday...but forgot . Too shocked by being told I was going to have my baby at 38 weeks! I'm 34+5 today, and the early date (C&W usually do 39 weeks, at least my OB does) is purely to do with position and not with my age.

I remember 'interviewing' a consultant at Charlotte's when pg with dd1 and trying to choose hospitals, and he was very keen to deliver older women early...maybe its their policy there. C&W don't seem worried about it, as long as you're well, baby seems well, and you have blood flow scans if overdue to check the placenta.

cora · 01/11/2006 11:30

still to knackered to post had a bad night with DS and his urine infection - he as antibiotics now but I must catch a rest - see you all soon !!! So nice to know I am not the only oldie around here !!!

Cora - hope your LO is OK. We've kind of taken over your thread, so hope you don't mind

Eli - I will resist QC's attempts to deliver early, unless there's a clear medical reason (e.g. if placenta fails etc). I'm coontemplating a homebirth. Trouble is, I really want an epidural. Having done it the "natural" way first time, and then having an epidural the second time, I deffo want the drugs!!

Its quite nice actually jnowing your date isn't it? So you can write in your diary, " baby today!!", rather than hanging on for weeks, scared to go too far in case the waters break!

EliBoo · 01/11/2006 13:22

Rest well, Cora -hope the little one is better!

GOod for you, GF...though you'll be hard pushed to get a home-epi . Mixed feelings about the set date - do feel relieved its soon, but bit wistful about never getting to experience all the wildly exciting water-breaking labour bit. Though as my OB wryly said, be careful what you wish for...!

guyfoxie · 02/11/2006 14:17

its gone very quiet on here!

Hiya Ladies,
I'm still here. Had my dating scan on friday, earlier than I should've done but my lovely M/w booked an urgent one for me due to my history and my non stop worrying! Everything is fine, baby moving around and looked like it was boxing, lol. Put me forwards a few days so now due 25th May!
Got my NF next wed so that's the next milestone to get through.

Hope your little one is ok now Cora.
How is everyone else?

Gingerbear · 06/11/2006 12:55

Hi Angie, My edd is 23 May, so weird to know someone else with almost identical dates, I had an early scan too, another one due (12 week scan) on Friday.
I still don't feel PG. So so strange.

Angielfc · 06/11/2006 13:37

Hi Gingerbear, I remember your name from somewhere...I used to post on older mums 40 plus (on meet ups) ages ago! Was it that one..hmm I'm not sure?? I don't think I had the same user name though! If I remember rightly we're not that far away from each other either? I'm in Doncaster.

Good luck for your scan on Friday.

I've only just started to 'feel' pregnant. Sore bbs, nausea, headaches, tiredness.....Oh the joy!!!!

3boysand1more · 06/11/2006 14:12

Hi - I don't know if anyone can help me. I am pregnant with my 4th child at nearly 40 and have been asked to write an article on Mothers Over 40...I am looking for women who want to talk/e-mail me about their experiences....I really need someone who has conceived via IVF and women having first babies...it is for a leading quality Sunday national newspaper and it is all bona fide and also positive an duplifting due to the fact many more women are having babies 40-plus.....if you are interested then please send me a chat link back with a contact or I can send you my contacts....thanks so much everyone

Elibean · 06/11/2006 14:55

Hi everyone...hope everyone had a good weekend, and is feeling either well or healthily sick (IYSWIM). I now have a date for babe's arrival, as she's still transverse...firmly lodged, it seems! So only just over 2 weeks to go...

3boysand1more, I had IVF both times, and both children over 40...if you want to CAT me, I'll gladly email with you: but it has to be before Bump arrives, because something tells me I'll have my hands full after that!

3boysand1more · 06/11/2006 15:28

Elibean - thanks so much...and good on you! I am new at all this so don't know what CAT means....how do I CAT you? I would love to get in touch and very kind of you to let me....

Bienchen · 06/11/2006 16:04

Hi Cora - not too late to join, I hope? I'm 42 and am 25 weeks pg. DS is 11 years, so quite a gap! On the plus side, he is very helpful, so I am probably less "busy" then you with a 4 year old.

I agree with some of the posts, I feel more tired as well but think the hot summer in the first few weeks did not help. Things are looking up.

Don't know any new mothers/pg ladies my age where I live and could not even get into NCT class - I think you need to book before you conceive ;-)

Good luck x

How do your kids feel about the new baby?

3boysand1more · 06/11/2006 16:11

Elibean - have worked out CAT now and have sent you my e-mail address thanks

Gingerbear · 06/11/2006 17:15

Angie, I am in Doncaster too. CAT me or email me at dleafe at hotmail dot co dot uk for a chat.

harktheheraldfoxessing · 06/11/2006 17:21

Bienchen Hi and welcome. My DS and DD are very excited. DS is pleased it wil be a little rother for him. DD is absolutely convinced that she is PG too! . She keeps saying "careful, you'll squash he baby in my tummy!" and "oooh, I can feel the baby moving in my tummy".

cinnamontam · 06/11/2006 19:29

Hi All,

I'm 35, hubby is 30 and this is my first. Got sick of my Mum telling me I was getting old and should start now as it could take ages. All it took was one go damnit
Husband vaciliates between freaking out (in a nice way) and thinking he is all that!
I have my 12 week scan this Thursday. Quite relieved I've found this forum as it might stop me from reading up endlessly about what is going on but also all the things that can go wrong. Looking forward to chatting with you all.

EllieK · 06/11/2006 22:11

hi, i'm not an older mum but was passing through!!!
guyfoxie i asked my doc about the flu jab, current advice is that they don't really know! she told me that the decision was mine, i have to weigh it up and decide if getting flu and being seriously ill because of it would be more harmful than having the jab, they don't know of side effects but can't be sure.
hth x

fondant4000 · 06/11/2006 22:19

I was 43 last week and expecting 2nd child in 2 weeks time (dd is 3.5).

I've been more anxious about the possibilities of health of this baby, but have had a good pregnancy (better than many younger mums). I know I'll be completely exhausted, but more able to cope with it than when I was younger, when I would have resented it more I think.

There are pros and cons at all ages, and apprehensiveness goes with the territory! I'm not really a 'baby' person, but really really looking forward to having someone else in our family

Elibean · 06/11/2006 22:28

Hi Bienchen and Fondant, welcome

3boys, I've CATed you too - just in case, as I hadn't yet received anything (and have a mad spam filter that eats anything it doesn't regard as kosher, whilst ignoring a lot of real spam )

Bienchen · 07/11/2006 08:44

Fondant, I understand about the health concerns with the baby as I was the same at least at the start.

Fondant and Elibean - I suppose you are just counting down the days now - what sort of birth have you planned and good luck of course!

Elibean - can midwife turn the baby?

I'm off to sign up with a few recruitment agencies for a bit of temp work this morning, having been made redundant after exactly 2 years (and exactly three days before SMP kicks in.

Elibean · 07/11/2006 09:40

The days go fast - but the nights, the nights I'm definitely counting those!

I'm under OB care due to age and previous history of m/c, and PIH...she won't try and turn baby (and tbh, I wouldn't want her to try either) because I had a low lying anterior placenta and possibly have a heart shaped uterus...she thinks its probably not coincidence that both my babies have been trannies

Bit wistful about that, but oh well...its not the end of the world, and there are positives as well as negatives for me in having another section.

Good luck with the agencies Bienchen!
