I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I know how you feel tori, I'm trying to finish a chapter before Christmas, but it is so slow going being so frail and trying to juggle all my hundreds of medical appointments. What is your dissertation on?

LucindaE · 18/11/2014 10:45

Ignominous Sorry cross posted; welcome, excellent advice from Kalidasa. Waves to all.

Hi ladies I have my drs appt tomorrow to discuss wat help they can give me to stop hyperemesis getting so bad. I'm coming off my pill this week ?? we are not going to try tho till after Xmas as I don't want to be sick over Xmas.
Anyone have any advise on what medication I should ask for? I've been on all of them b4 and none helped at all but I think it was to late I was to sick already. I've read to take 2 different anti sickness as some work on brain and some on ur stomach. Plus b6. I'm going to ask her to prescribe me meds as soon as sickness starts x

kalidasa · 18/11/2014 12:14

laura the protocol I agreed with my GP after severe HG in my first pregnancy was: starting cyclizine, pyridoxine (B vit) and ranitidine as soon as the nausea began (which for me has been 48 hours after conception in all four pregnancies (two early losses)), and adding ondansetron as soon as I began vomiting at around 4-5 weeks. I asked to be prescribed all of these so that I had them at home before I even had my coil taken out!! We also switched to a nanny before we started trying so we had as much back-up at home as possible. Just as well because our nanny started on a Monday and I was feeling sick by the Friday!

I ended up seeing a specialist at I think 3 weeks and 6 days (!) - so basically the test had only just turned positive - as although I had not yet vomited I was unable to get out of bed because the nausea was already so severe and I was really scared. She recommended beginning the ondansetron immediately as it is better to avoid throwing up at all and so avoid the vomiting cycle. She was very reassuring about the safety of this route.

I have to admit this protocol didn't work for me but I had a really very very severe case this time and I did feel that we had done everything we possibly could. Lots of women on this thread - including ovaltine at the moment - have had a much better time with no. 2 using pre-emptive medication like this.

One thing that I think helped when discussing it with the GP is to refer back to what you were told by consultants/hospital doctors in your last pregnancy, especially if you were admitted. So rather than saying "I've read that the best thing is . . . " you could say "my consultant last time advised me that before getting pregnant again I should plan to follow this protocol . . . ". The PSS website also has some forms you can print out to agree a plan with your GP. Make sure once it is agreed your GP flags it up in your notes so if you end up seeing a different GP as an emergency they can see it has been discussed and agreed.

WillowHouse · 18/11/2014 12:39

hugs for everyone whonis suffering. Noroom that is awful and must be so worrying - i think writing a protocol for treatment sounds like a plan.

New shoes i get that lumpy feeling too Sad

Kasinda people are very rude with staring - at the start of this pregnancy i could still get out comfortably if sat in a wheelchair and i was Shock at peoples reactions. Thankfully i usually had my socially challenged six year old with me to put people straight. No way i could sit up in a chair now - i have been half joking to DH that a bed on wheels might work.

Ugg i hate this whole bad and good days thing. Had a good day yesterday (i could eat!) and spent the day worrying i was feeling better 'cos there was a problem with baby. Today i feel terrible, utterly miserable and overwhelmed by nausea.

Lauracarr55 · 18/11/2014 12:40

Hi kalidasa thank you for your message. Sorry to hear it's not helped u this time. How far gone are you? I'm so desperate for another baby but I'm really dreading the sickness. I got pregnant a year ago and got so depressed I ended up having a abortion. I have regretted it ever since. I was so fed up of being admitted to hospital, my children where really suffering without mummy around it got to the point I just couldn't cope anymore. I actually remember saying to my husband that I would rather die than carry on feeling like this!!
I'm so desperate for a baby but I worry every day if I'm making a mistake putting myself and family through it again x

Meerka · 18/11/2014 13:14

Can you get an extension in the circumstances tori ?

The cyclizine should be in full effect by day 3 if it's going to help you at all.

Hi ignominious, congrats and good luck, here's hoping to being lucky and escaping it!

FreeWee · 18/11/2014 13:30

Lucinda I first heard of ketostix on this thread this time. Had never heard before. Interesting you say confusion and dehydration are linked as last pregnancy I was weeing three times a day; once in the morning, once getting home from work and once before bed. That's not really enough but I hadn't thought to keep track this time as my toddler has been keeping me occupied but thinking about it it's probably only four times a day which is too little I'd say. Will make a conscious note of fluids. Thank you.

Told my boss who was lovely and supportive. Spent all morning writing the sick leave cover notes and met at lunchtime. I know I'm leaving them in the shit but something had to give. Looking forward to enjoying Christmas with at least some energy now.

fortywinx · 18/11/2014 13:49

Thanks for the welcome all. Sadly the GP didn't offer to sign me off but then I would probably sat at home stressing about all the work I wasn't doing so it's a bit 50/50 as to whether that's a bad thing.
Was almost late to work today as, after showering and drying my fairly long thick hair, I then threw up and managed to get some in my desperately-in-need-of-a-trim fringe as I hadn't got to the point of putting it in it's usual bun and alice band arrangement (which I've been doing to prevent exactly that kind of thing!). Ended up having to wash it again and went to work with very damp hair. Vomit hair aside, I've been feeling much better since I've been taking the tablets.
Still not sure how women put themselves through this more than once, although I might well feel very differently once I have had my little one for a few months/weeks/days XD

muddylettuce · 18/11/2014 15:20

Hello all,
More new people joining, seems a lot of people are suffering at the moment. Hello to all.
No room you've been through so much, I hope you're bearing up, as well as can be expected anyway.
I went to my first scan today, all looked ok. Due date has moved slightly forward Lucinda it's 22nd May now.
I have been feeling better the last few days, marked reduction in the hours a day spent feeling nauseous and no vomiting for for 4 days which is good. I had the same wobble as you last night willow I worried something was wrong with baby because I felt well, good job scan was today and I could see the little heart beating away.
Right I have been ordered to find the bubbles by dd...

LucindaE · 18/11/2014 19:11

Hugs to all those suffering, worrying because they aren't suffering at this precise minute, and to NoRoom with that awful situaition and to Laura who is dreading suffeirng again. Muddy I'll change your date asap, nice news. FreeWee Glad you are getting the magic sticks. yes, confusion is definitely one of the side effects of dehydration.
xx

forty my experience with GPs in this pregnancy and last is that they won't offer to sign you off they specifically need to be asked. I banged on to my midwife how horrendous I was feeling last time and never once did she suggest medication, a friend did. So really I'd suggest you research yourself and go to them with suggestions rather than expecting them to understand. That's just my experience but know one really knows how you're feeling apart from you so don't let anyone minimise your sickness.

I could not even contemplate wanting to be pregnant again after 20 month old DD was born as I felt sick up until the day she was born. But here I am so yes you so eventually realise it is worth it. Took me till at least 14 months to genuinely consider having another one.

SummersDay2014 · 19/11/2014 04:34

Just popping in, have had a few pretty good days have managed to eat a normalish amount of food !! Has helped I had four days off work. Predictably though back to work today and I'm feeling yuck again. Feeling frustrated today that my situation is being likened to a lady who is newly pregnant at work and having regular morning sickness. People just don't get it do they it's so depressing feeling like this for 25 weeks and having no hope it's going to end soon sigh

Cineflix If anyone is up to that, the publicity would be a good idea.
For all those having trouble getting meds, I would like to say that the
024 7638 2020 number is excellent for helping people to get meds. They have to ring you back, but a very symapthetic doctor has helped several people who've been on this thread to get effective meds.

summersDay2014 That sounds really infuriating - people can be so dismissive; is there any chance of your getting signed off again as activity makes this worse? What meds are you on, sorry, remind me?

How are you donig now lucinda?

Fraggle31 · 19/11/2014 16:59

Evening everyone.....long time no post (apologies)

After what I thought was going to be abit of a relapse a few weeks ago I actually did alright and didn't really have any issues. Jump to this week which has been a disaster........my back has been an increasing problem for the last few weeks but manageable with pain relief, but culminated with me having mon and tues this week off sick because of the pain........that combined with the lack of sleep saw me vomit terribly yesterday, including another public transport vomit disaster (on the bus this time - grim) and then nearly passing out on the tube on the way to work this morning.

As a consequence I've decided I've had enough at work and it's not worth the stress and hassle of the commute, being on my feet all day etc, and my gp has now signed me off for the remaining week and a bit that I had left to work before my annual leave/mat leave kicks in..........it's a massive weight off my shoulders to be honest

I will read back through the thread shortly, but hello to the newbies, sorry you find yourself here!

Fraggle (34+3)

LucindaE · 19/11/2014 17:31

Meerka Up and runniing again since yesterday, thanks so much for asking. At least these migraines remind me of the terrible sickness that people on this thread have to endure every day...
Fraggle I'm so glad you are finally signed off. On your feet all day, however did you manage? Puking on a bus sounds awful - I hope you had a convenient carrier bag to hand. Hugs. We don't have you, or lots of newbies if they want, on the due dates list. I suppose poor BlueberrySlice has been working this week - Mother Hen is anxious about that.

Lucinda I pretty much managed by coming home and doing nothing! unfortunately I had no carrier bag to hand, but managed to contain it (pleasant!) till I could get off the bus and water some nearby roadside plants - lovely! I was on the due date list on the previous list, not sure where I've gone haha - I'm 28th December :D

ovaltine · 19/11/2014 18:39

I got my first scan yesterday - due 4th June :) I've now got the lurgy, no idea what to eat so my mum gone to buy me steak (I know, I'm spoilt!) at least there has been no puke today but hardly eaten. Gone off everything this week!! Argh!!!!

FreeWee · 19/11/2014 19:27

FreeWee due date 24th June

Agree Summers that people compare two people's sickness the same because it's caused by the same thing not because they experience it in the same way. I've decided to not go to work because last time I struggled through day after day and people said 'it can't have been that bad if you made it into work every day'. Despite the fact I cried every night not knowing how I'd make it through the next day. And despite summoning all my brain power to hold it together every day. So this way people won't minimise it because 'everyone feels a bit poorly when they're pregnant'. I think Kate Middleton's hospitalisation has made people realise that there are degrees of seriousness and it isn't just a touch of morning sickness; there's all day every day can't bear to even think about food never mind eat it sickness. So pleased to have found like minded people Flowers

ignominious · 19/11/2014 20:04

Thank you for the lovely welcome.

Kali, it sounds like you're having a terrible time. And how are you managing to feed your DS? My last pg, DD ate a lot of cold food pre-prepared by DH while I looked the other way.

fortywinx love the hair vomit :) Ouch.

WillowHouse · 19/11/2014 20:06

After a day in a and e (turned out to be a false alarm thank goodness) i am shocked by the poor care. I was there for six hours, 2 in a and e and 4 on the ward and despite me telling every healthcare person who i saw i had HG and was eating little and often so could they please find me water and snacks i was given nothing Shock Luckily DH was with me and had enough cash to get a bottle of ginger drink and a cheese sandwich. But i've found if i eat every hour - just a nibble - i can keep the nausesa at a managable level on good days. So im back to feeling crap thanks to a hospital visit. Only plus is they are scanning me on Sat.
