I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Lovely to hear you're feeling so much better muddy :) best of luck for the rest of the preg!

LucindaE · 01/02/2015 10:02

Muddy How lovely to hear that you are so much better now. Sorry about SPD and so glad that the thread helped you through a terrible time. Do let us know how you're getting on. No joke to have SPD when working.
DillyIt occurs to me - didn't I rad furher back that hospitals get fined if people are re-admitted within a certain time? It's ridiiculous; I don't want to be bossy, but do speak to that doctor on the number.
Meerka Waves.

Lucinda you did read correctly. I was told by a senior doctor if you are readmitted to hospital within 7 days for the same reason you were discharged the hospital is fined. The doctors at my hospital after my 4th and 5th admission were certainly keen to keep me in longer to ensure I was OK to go home on oral medication.

dilly I would recommend you talk to the doctors on the ward regarding medication for when you go home and ensuring they work for you. I found telling the doctors that I was concerned about being discharged home after having iv meds (which were an enormous help) but then when I was home the oral meds didn't work. So it was agreed that once iv meds and fluids had enabled me to eat and drink they would then give my meds orally over 24 to 48 hours to see if I could managed to keep vomiting at bay. In the end they found it was a combination of meds rather than just one that worked for me.
Definitely tell the doctors that if you are sent home with meds that don't work for you, you will end up being readmitted to hospital within a few days.

dillydollydarling · 01/02/2015 18:30

Durham, I did try explaining that to them last time before I left. As soon as ketones are gone, they get you out as soon as possible! I still felt fairly sick and unwell when I left hospital last night but they refused to keep me in. I will be trying to get a doctors appointment asap next week to ask about ondansetron. Unfortunately its been longer than 7 days between my admissions, so they probably won't get fined.

Hopefully this time I can stay out of hospital, but I'm not holding my breath! Sad

DurhamRed · 01/02/2015 19:11

I know how frustrating it can be when doctors don't listen. It took 3 admissions before they started to listen to me (and 2 further admissions to get on top of my meds).

I really hope your GP is sympathetic and they prescribe you ondansetron. I agree with Meerka and Lucinda call the doctor on that number and get as much help as you can. I really do have my fingers crossed for you!

Meerka · 02/02/2015 08:38

dilly hope you can manage to get an appointment fast, and if you can't do ring that Preg Sickness Support line

Our little HG graduate has eaten an entire pear this morning. I don't know where he stuffs it, he's only 8 1/2 kilos.

LucindaE · 02/02/2015 13:40

DurhamRed Great advice, ah, it was you who found that seven days business out. Hope you are OK.
dilly Keeping my fingers crossed you get the right meds, my goodess.
Meerka Grin about pear. Waves.

Hi ladies.
I'm an old member rejoining you.
DD is now 21m and had HG with her.
Just found out I'm pregnant again so I'm only 5 weeks and touch wood no HG symptoms yet. With DD I remember feeling sick before I even missed my period.

Went to the docs today to get referred to a midwife. I told him I had pretty bad HG previously and yes he gingered me. I just had to smile whilst I still have the patience.
I hope you ladies are doing well, sending everyone positive hugs xxx

Meerka · 02/02/2015 16:58

HI glossy Congratulations and Good Luck!!

Can you get Cyclizine box of 100 tablets from the chemist and also a box of Vitamin B6?

Then I'd ring the Preg Sickness Support helpline and ask to speak to the elderly doctor and ask him if you could take it pre-emptively. Early meds are thought to help cushion the worst of HG and prevent you descending to the levels you would otherwise. It will be safe enough, but we're not medicos and it's wisest to just check with an HG - experienced doctor first. Any doctor who recommends ginger for HG doesn't know what he's talking of I'm afraid. The gigantic majority of HG sufferers gain no benefit from it at all.

Glossyflower · 02/02/2015 17:52

Thanks Meerka.
I am already taking B vitamins and I still have lots of meds left over from my last pregnancy. Cyclizine and ondansetron stashed away Smile
I'm also trying to keep well hydrated as last time I know dehydration was making it worse and became a very vicious cycle xxx

dillydollydarling · 02/02/2015 18:08

Why does everyone feel the need to suggest ginger? Today I had the owner of the shop I work in asking if I'd tried ginger biscuits. But she was lucky and didn't suffer with morning sickness in any of her 3 pregnancies!

If people suggest the ginger to me, I just tell them it doesn't work and change the subject. I'm also fed up of people telling me its a sign of a healthy pregnancy and that it will stop at 12 weeks. I know that it should start improving but I'm not convinced that I'll wake up on the morning of 12 weeks and feel fine! Grin

DurhamRed · 02/02/2015 19:29

Hi Lucinda I'm not doing too badly thank you. Have had some rough days (had to come home from work Friday as I was vomiting, and had a rough day today too) but mostly I'm managing to cope with the nausea. Only 6 weeks until due date so I'm hanging in there!!

Meerka · 02/02/2015 20:17

re Ginger, this

Glad you have some ondan stashed away ... wonderful stuff (if a bit bungy-uppy if you see what I mean). Definitely worth considering taking the cyclizine early tho if you can get a medical go-ahead, to stop it getting too bad

are you able to take time off work? rest, rest, rest helps too

LucindaE · 02/02/2015 20:17

GlossyFlower I remember you well - did you do an interview about Hyperemesis, too? Congratulations on pregnancy, and I do hope you escape it this time.
dilly too, re: gingered - people who say that to a woman with Hyperemesis would probably recommend stopping a stampede of elephants by firing a peashooter - absurd. No, of course, you've never thought of taking any remedies at all... I can't believe so many gp's say that.
Durham Sorry for rough days, and continuing nausea. Hugs. You've bee invaluable on the thread.

Meerka - that link is amazing! May have to post it to my Facebook at some point. It sums everything up so well! I think people do just think that we suffer with normal morning sickness but are just wimps about it. At least, that's how people tend to make me feel. Like when they tell me just to drink more. If only it was that easy Sad

On a better note, I've had a pretty good day today! Only vomited once and survived 4 hours at work Grin

Fedupofbuildingsnowmen · 03/02/2015 08:59

Hi all.

I suffered HG in my first pregnancy with my DD who has just turned 2.5. She was the result of years of fertility treatment.

Last week I got the shock of my life as came down with what I thought was a really bad stomach bug. When I was still no better my DH took me to GP and turns out I'm 7 weeks pregnant and it's HG again. We really had no idea that I could be pregnant. We are thrilled but I'm dreading the horror of HG again.

Despite the GP giving me cyclizine immediately I had a horrendous weekend and ended up in a and e on a drip. They have given me a second drug and touch wood despite still feeling awful I haven't actually vomited now for 24 hours.

I wish I'd know of this forum last time round. Hopefully I wont feel as alone this time round.

Glossyflower · 03/02/2015 09:04

Hi again Lucinda
Yes I did an interview for my local paper. It was the time when Kate Middleton had HG first time.
Hugs to all you lovely ladies today xxx

LucindaE · 03/02/2015 16:32

Fedupofbuildingsnowmen Welcome, sorry to hear you're suffering again and that you' ve been admitted already, but I'm glad the new drug seems to be helping. Which one is it? You'll find lots of support from the lovely women who sue this thread.
Glossyflower Ah, I remember about the interview. Amazing your daughter's a toddler already - and I'm glad you aren't suffering badly yet, as as a rule of thumb, I gather the later you suffer, the more chance of it not being too severe, though it does vary.
dilly and Meerka It's a great link.
waves to all. I hope nobody's suffering too much. Come to think of it, it's a while since we heard from wavesandsmiles. Oh, dear; she was still forcing herself into work when last heard from.

Hi Lucinda.
It's Metoclopramide. Had quite a good day today. Only vomited once and although I still can't drink am able to eat grapes etc today so feel more hydrated.

Hellohellohowareyou · 03/02/2015 16:56

Hello ladies! Well I went back to work yesterday after 13 weeks off, I'm 19 weeks today and still being sick most mornings but it's manageable. Luckily I'm doing a phased return to work as supported by my doctor so I'm doing reduced hours for the first 4 weeks at least

Meerka · 03/02/2015 21:10

hi fedup big congrats on your preg! Must be such a wonderful suprise. Commiserations on the HG though .. big style. Meto is quite good, but if you get twitchiness do go back to your doctor. It's absolutely safe for the baby but the occasional woman does get a nasty reaction to it, and if you do you need to come off it.

Hope you're not too bad today glossy

hello lovely to hear you are improving. Don't do too much too soon if you can possibly help it .. glad you are getting a phased return. Can you feel the baby kicking? :)

Hellohellohowareyou · 04/02/2015 07:27

meerka yes getting lots of movements now which is lovely! A phased return is definitely helping things even if I was a bit apprehensive to begin with. Wont be long and I'll be going on maternity leave Grin

Meerka · 04/02/2015 08:04

It's one of the few golden things about being preg (well if you get HG), isn't it?

good luck today :)

comeagainforbigfudge · 04/02/2015 11:55

Just popping in to say hello (instead of tidying up)

Happy to report that finally at 20 weeks I was able to stop taking my anti-sickness. Now 22 weeks and although do still feel nauseous at times its manageable, and more noticeable if I'm tired.

Still got a number of food avoidance things going on but so much better.

And scans show baby is fine. Even slightly above average on the graph.

Thanks again for all the wonderful words of wisdom. Hopefully it won't return with a vengeance later in pregnancy but if it does I so know where to come Smile

Meerka · 05/02/2015 09:27

lovely to hear comeagain :)
