I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Gosh, I've been awful at keeping up with this thread! Congratulations basgetti, what a lovely reminder for us all that the light at the end of the tunnel is a bright one!

All was quiet for me for nearly 10 weeks (apart from SPD). am now 36+3 and have had solid, head spinning nausea for two days now, retching after 8pm, same as first trimester. Praying I don't go overdue.

dillydollydarling · 21/01/2015 08:49

Bit of a sleepless night on the ward! Ketones still at 2 this morning after 1 and a half bags of fluid. The anti sickness stuff they give you through IV is awesome and I want a constant supply! Had 2 slices of toast, a slice of cake and a cup of tea when I got up to the ward about 1am and just had another 2 slices of toast and cup of tea. This is the most I've eaten in weeks!

Hellohellohowareyou · 21/01/2015 08:52

Dilly I know the feeling, I ate so much late week when I got admitted last week, it was so nice to feel actual hunger and know the food would stay down. Fingers crossed you are on the mend now.

dillydollydarling · 21/01/2015 10:08

I haven't felt like eating since the last time I was here on the 9th of January. Considering asking for some more toast to keep me going until lunch! Grin

Meerka · 21/01/2015 10:37

frenetic hold on, done so well so far! is everything ready for the baby? :)

dilly glad to hear you've managed such a turnaround so quickly! hope they keep you longer. can your husband come and feed you full of anythign else you fancy, specially high-nutrition stuff, while you can eat?

to hello and everyone

dillydollydarling · 21/01/2015 12:15

Unfortunately OH is working today so I'm just stuck with hospital food until he finishes. But I am feeling considerably better at the moment though. Not 100% but getting there! Hopefully when I get out, I can keep the dehydration under control myself and save another trip in here!

IsabelAlexB82 · 21/01/2015 12:45

I've been suffering with sickness too....baby number 3 and definitely the worst so far!! struggling with basic tasks and just the smell of my house makes me queasy and want to cry!! went to the docs and he's prescribed 'cyclizine hydrochloride'....bit worried about taking it though!!!

dillydollydarling · 21/01/2015 13:29

Cyclizine is perfectly safe to take. The hospital prescribed it to me and said it won't harm baby at all. Hope it works for you.

comeagainforbigfudge · 21/01/2015 13:47

Ha ha after me ranting about my skin it appears much clearer today! What are the chances ha ha ha

Isabel take the cyclizine. 1st of all - Dr would not have prescribed them if they weren't safe. And 2nd - they don't hand these prescriptions out unless you need them!

I've been taking them for past 10 weeks. The difference it's made!!
Anyway, hope you feel better soon

IsabelAlexB82 · 21/01/2015 13:57

Thanks for your advice ladies! very comforting to know it's made a difference to you....just taken 1st one...fingers crossed for relief! definitely makes the first stage of pregnancy a miserable time....i'm also getting slightly concerned that it might be twins! lol! my tummy is already looking 6 months pregnant!

freneticfox · 21/01/2015 15:34

Meerka - we are officially ready to be parents. Especially my body. My body is 1000% ready to not be pregnant anymore ;)

Actually had to take one of my remaining Ondansetron tabs earlier (after clearing with MW). So tired from a night of dry heaving. Fidgety bump isn't helping matters!

dillydollydarling · 21/01/2015 15:52

Frenetic, you have ondansetron tabs?! They've gave me that through IV last night when I got to hospital and it was amazing but they told me that they don't like to use it and won't prescribe it cos its so expensive. Apparently my one dose would have cost £16, whereas my doses of cyclizine and metoclopramide cost pennies. I'm surprised to hear that you managed to get tablets!

LucindaE · 21/01/2015 16:11

Isabel Welcome (belatedly, been out) and sorry you are suffering. I hope cyclazine works for you and as others say, it's been proven safe for decades. This is a very depressing condition, I'm not suprised you feel like crying.
dillydolly I'm so glad you've been admitted and feel a bit better, that was the best thing for you. It's awful the way the chances of getting ondansetron is so patchy with expense so much a factor. I hope now you've been admitted twice they'll take it more seriously - you've had that dramatic weight loss, too.
frenteticfox Oh dear, how awful, I hope this is a temporary blip. Nice to hear from you again, but sorry it's not in happier circumstances.
Waves to Meerka and everyone. Apologies to anyone rudely overloked.
Waves to comeagain and hopes everyone is coping.

Hellohellohowareyou · 21/01/2015 16:24

Dilly I too was prescribed ondansetron tablets, it was the only thing that worked for me for a while but then they stopped working and the sickness came back. Your Gp can prescribe them but they usually like to try the other drug options first.

kalidasa · 21/01/2015 16:46

dilly ondansetron is standard for women who have failed on the first-line things (like cyclizine, metoclopramide etc). It works very well for most people and they should really be considering a prescription for you given this is your second admission isn't it? and you've lost a lot of weight? If you do end up with it prescribed, do be careful about constipation and treat proactively for it, ondansetron causes dreadful constipation and the docs aren't always aware of how bad it can be (because it is usually only used very briefly, e.g. after an anaesthetic or for a day or so during chemo).

39 weeks today and still no baby! Quite bad 'period pains' this afternoon but that's happened so many times in the last couple of weeks I am not getting my hopes up. We did finally agree on a name yesterday though so that's something! I really thought we were going to have to wait and hope we were inspired when we looked at him . . .

freneticfox · 21/01/2015 18:00

dilly - like kali said, my GP went through all of the first-line tablets (none of which even touched the soul crushing nausea and retching). She'd only prescribe me 10 tabs on Ondansetron at a time though, and I didn't even realise I had a few left in my last packet!

Also the constipation is SO under-emphasised. It's awful. Admittedly worth having the edge taken off the constant heaving... but REALLY unpleasant nonetheless. Aggressive action is necessary!

Fingers crossed things will be moving soon kali, I am SO ready to be at full term now!

LucindaE · 22/01/2015 10:54

Hello, dilly, are you out now? What meds have they got you on now?
frenetic Women on here have suffered dreadfully from the constipation and sometimes those jelly suppositories do no good. kalidasa is unlucky enough to be the expert on treating it. It's SO annoying about the expense factor making such a difference I had heard somewhere that another company was marketing the drug and that should have made it cheaper, but it doesn't seem to have done. No doubt Meerka may be up on that...

LucindaE · 22/01/2015 10:55

Forgot to add, Hello with the Ondansetron not working any more, have they prescribed additional drugs as I believe that can help?

OP posts:
dillydollydarling · 22/01/2015 11:45

I am indeed out of hospital now. They let me go late last night. Still on the cyclizine and metoclopramide but they were more helpful on how to take it. Told me to stagger them and take them an hour before food. My GP originally said to take them together 20 mins before food. They've also given me open access to the ward so I don't have to go through a&e if I need to go back in. They did say I might end up bouncing in and out of the hospital for a few weeks until this settles down (if it ever does). They were also adamant that I couldn't be prescribed ondansetron :(

LucindaE · 22/01/2015 12:45

dilly Hugs. Grrr! about your not getting it after such a big weight loss and their obviously seeing things are quite bad with you. It just might be worth phoning up PPS on 024 7638 2020. There's a wonderful retired doctor who advises people how to get effective meds who's helped a few women on here.

Newshoesplease · 22/01/2015 12:58

Hi guys, just having a catch up of the thread -so sorry to all those suffering. I remember the relief of the drip dilly. It's wrong that they're refusing to prescribe you odansetron.
Am 20 weeks tomorrow, sickness only occuring rarely now, thank god!

Meerka · 22/01/2015 12:59

Hi dilly, bet it's nice to be home. Glad to hear you can stagger the meto and cyclizine. Very good that you don't have to go through A and E again.

Ondansetron - it's out of patent so any company can make it but it's still expensive. Is there any chance of getting a prescription and paying for it privately? Do ask a doctor / the ward first though. Last resort you can ring the Pregnancy Sickness SUpport helpline above. They will get back to you if you leave a message. They have a very experienced doctor there who can give you advice and maybe even prescribe it. Do mention any other meds you're on.

elizabethsmum · 22/01/2015 14:54

hi all- so glad to heae if your improvement newshoes.
any news yet kali?? can't believe you are at 39+ weeks now finally!!
hope you are still doing ok dilly. I had ondansetron tablets as well although they were not the miracle cure I hoped for at the time when hg was at its peak for me- only litres of iv fluids and iv ondansetron/im cyclizine worked at the worst points but once it was all more under control ondansetron tablets in combination with cyclizine helped. hope you managed to get them prescribed ( mine were from consultant not via gp).

waves to frenetic, meerka, lucinda and everyone and hi to anyone joining us (sorry you are suffering but we will all be along with you for the ride/gentle pats/hand holding on offer here)

need to go and quickly tidy up before school run although it will be totall pointless! back later xx

dillydollydarling · 22/01/2015 15:26

They weren't going to get a doctor to see me before leaving hospital as they were happy for me to go once ketones were down but I asked to see one. Managing to eat and drink a bit more today which is good. Only small amounts at a time though. Poor OH is so worried about me and I feel guilty for making him worry!

If I end up back in hospital I will definitely push for ondansetron. Being in hospital with a drip and anti emetics seems to be the only time I actually feel well. This is so miserable :(

LucindaE · 22/01/2015 17:48

Newshoes Lovely to hear from you and that's great news that you're feeling so much better. dilly Gentle pats from me, too, it almost certainly will get a lot better, but it's hard to bear now. elizaabethsmum and Meerka excellent advice, as ever. Did you see the survey being done by PSS? I posted a link further down but I expect they contacted you anyway.
