I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I'm coming up to 18 weeks now and can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Still being sick daily but it's a manageable amount, I'd say I now have what I've always thought of as 'normal' morning sickness. Managing to eat ok too. Hang in there ladies!

We had a gender scan at the weekend and have found out we are having a little girl! Very excited although not sure what DS will think of his new sister Grin

LucindaE · 26/01/2015 09:28

Meerka and dilly for sure, Mother Hen does flap and cluck and say the same; don't rush things. It won't kill your OH to find out how much you do normally, after all; it takes something like this for them to find out. Oh dear, I'm mean...Hello Thank goodness for the light at the end of the tunnel. Even 'normal ms' (and most people would say being sick once a day is a nasty enough case) is draining, so don't start overdoing things. You'll need to recover for a little while yet.
Waves to all. Hope meds are helping everyone as much as possible.

Thanks Lucinda I'm due back at work a week today too eeek

Meerka · 26/01/2015 11:29

hello lovely to hear you are having a little girl, congratulations! (I've just been looking at this lovely little site Belle and Boo, makes me wish we had a little girl!))

Glad to hear things are improving. Please take it as easy as you can ... not easy with work :/

dillydollydarling · 26/01/2015 11:58

Having a very relaxing day today. OH is working so can get some peace and quiet. Thinking of trying some meal replacement shakes as I'm struggling so badly. Anyone have any experience with these? My poor mum has been googling and sending me suggestions of things to try!

hopefull2424 · 26/01/2015 16:41

Hi

Can you have hg without vomiting? I'm literally 15 weeks and can't Eat or drink for nausea. I was sent to hospital today for it. Ended up having anti sickness injection and got to go back tomorrow if no better :/

Meerka · 26/01/2015 17:05

dilly Im sorry I am not aware of the meal replacement stuff. Maybe kali could help ... that's if she isn't currently in hospital undergoing a Very Interesting Time, which hopefully she is.

hopeful the technical definitions of HG are 5- 10% loss of bodyweight so yes, if you can't get anything down and have lost weight because of that I'm sure you would technically qualify.

However - the definition doesn't really matter. What matters is that you have got treatment and are going to carry on getting treatment. Are you feeling any better? the anti-sickness injections are supposed to be quite good. Have they tested you for ketones?

elizabethsmum · 26/01/2015 17:12

hopeful sorry you are suffering. Ime if you are unable to eat or drink and suffering crippling nausea which is leading you to need medication/hospitalisation then I would say hg! did they check for keytones in your wee (dehydration? having medication injected was the only thing that worked for me for a while. do go back if you are no better by tomorrow as once you reach a certain level of dehydration you may need to have fluids on a drip in hospital to help you.

hello Yay for improvements and congratulations!

dilly it is very disheartening I know. all I can say is hang in there. it is good that you have such a supportive dh and family (((hugs)))

lewaney congratulations and welcome to the thread! as lucinda says I suffered in both my singleton (1st pg) and twin (2nd) pg. it actually lasted a lot longer in the 1st pg and with the twins it eased off a lot at 15-16 weeks (although I stayed on meds until 28 weeks as I had learned from bitter experience and did not want to relapse). are you on any meds?

elizabethsmum · 26/01/2015 17:16

lewaney forgot to add that alongside the sickness the nausea was 24 hr with the twins and used to wake me in the night a lot. on better days/nights I would sometimes try and nibble an oatcake or something at night- usually about 3am. constant unending nausea just as awful as sickness as no release from it Sad

dillydollydarling · 26/01/2015 17:45

Hopeful- you most certainly can have it without vomiting. I don't vomit a lot, maybe a couple of times a day but have constant nausea and constantly feel like I'm about to throw up at any minute. I've lost a fair bit of weight and been in hospital twice so far. Dehydration really does make you feel a lot worse and it may be that you need iv fluids. For me, being in hospital is the only time I feel well and able to eat and drink a normal amount!

LucindaE · 26/01/2015 17:54

Dashing on to welcome Hopefull2424. I've known a number of women on here have it witout much vomting, and as everyone says the nausea is as bad as the actual being sick and can lead to dehydration just as much.
Hello Can your sick note be extended?
Meerka Lovely link - waves to elizabethsmum and everyone. Yes, let's hope Kalidasa is having or has had the baby...

OP posts:
Hellohellohowareyou · 26/01/2015 19:15

Hi Lucinda I'm sure my doctor would extend it if I asked but I've been off for 12 weeks now and feel guilty plus I do think I'm pretty much ready to go back

Thanksforthat · 26/01/2015 20:32

Hello
I'm joining. I was a silent lurker back in 2008 when I had my first. I swore never again. But I'm 37 now so have a bit more perspective on the fact I can scrape through 4 bad months. I was hospitalised four times in 2008 and one of those times was for 7 weeks.
I'm 5 weeks today and am doing all I can to prepare myself for slaughter. I genuinely don't have much hope but at least I can brace myself.
Ange

Hellohellohowareyou · 26/01/2015 20:47

thanksforthat I too had HG In my first Pregnancy and swore never again but here I am again!! The only thing I can say is at least this time you know what to expect and will be able to speak to your doctor about it. I struggled for so long in my first pregnancy thinking I had 'normal' morning sickness

elizabethsmum · 26/01/2015 23:01

hi thanksforthat. can totally relate having been through it twice- I put off second pg for 4 years as couldn't bare the thought. what I would say if you do suffer again this time is that you are already mentally prepared for the onslaught. did you have any meds that worked in the end last time? the cumulative effects of cyclizine might be more effective if you pre-emtively take it now alongside vit b6 (I think??)- meerka is our resident meds expert.
also I found I was taken more seriously more quickly second time round and was also better able to deal with it for the first week or so at home. i also found that it didn't last as long in second pg.
we are all here to provide gentle pats if you are having a bad time xx

anyothergirl · 27/01/2015 00:25

Hi all, de-lurking to get some advice. I'm 10 weeks and currently in hospital being dehydrated due to a very bad HG episode over the weekend. This is the second time I have needed IV fluids and both times I have had terrible diarrhea that seems to happen when the ketones go up. Is this likely to be a coincidence and Im just unlucky with tummy bugs or is it something any of you have come across before? I'm really worried Sad

DurhamRed · 27/01/2015 08:27

Hi anyothergirl I had diarrhoea with each of my admissions to hospital, the only thing I could put it down to was the vast amount of fluid being pushed through my system via iv (it only happened to me during hospital admission and cleared after a few days). Let your nurses know about it as they may want to take a sample to check for any bugs/infections.

LucindaE · 27/01/2015 09:33

Welcome to Thanksforthat and Anyohtergirl.
Anyothergirl Sorry to hear you're in hospital, althuugh it's the best place when you're that ill. The diarrhoea on top of everything else sounds awful - DurhamRed's advice sounds good. I did have a couple of episodes of - grotesque image - fluids coming out of eery other orifice while puking at home Shock; odd as I must have been dehydrated at the time...
Thanksforthat I always admire anyone who goes for it twice. I can only second elizabethsmums suggestions about pre-emptive meds

My goodness, seven weeks in hospital, that must have been awful. I'm sure with that on your medical records, they'll take it seriously enough to offer pre-emptive meds. Kalidasa was probably in hospital that long - but I think she's about due now and may be in hospital.

hello Mother Hen is always worried to see women on here rushing back to work - even if they have been off a long time, they never seem to give themselves enough time to recuperate properly. If the doctor's willing, I'd say you should take another week or so.
Which reminds me, where's Jen?
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked...

OP posts:
anyothergirl · 27/01/2015 09:53

Thanks for the advice, it is reassuring to know that I'm not the only one. They are pumping fluid into me but I seem to be losing it just as quickly again. The plan for today seems to be taking a sample to check for bugs and moving me from fasting to clear fluids. I have a feeling I'm here for a while. Sad

Thanksforthat · 27/01/2015 10:30

Thanks for the welcome. Yup 7 weeks. I'm in Ireland so meds were not available to me at all. My consultant at time was strict about me receiving no medication until 8 weeks were up. But because I was so starved it took me 11 weeks to reach 8 weeks on dating scan ( if that makes sense)
But things have improved. There is now prescription for Cariban which is similar to the Unisom/B6 combo. Dublin has a day hydration clinic that I can attend. It's 50 miles away. But I can get there if I'm not Ketones 4 ++++. Prevention of complete dehydration battle starts now.
Thank you.
And yes when dehydrated my saliva used to give me Diarrhoea. Really really miserable. Makes you so weak

dillydollydarling · 27/01/2015 10:33

Hope everyone starts feeling better soon.

I'm actually having a really good day so far. Managed half a bagel for breakfast, then had to go to the dentist. Since then I've had a small fruit cooler from Costa (complete heaven!!) and I've had 2 packets of monster munch Blush most I've eaten for a while! It is still early though but I'm feeling the best I've felt for a long time! Must make sure I don't try and over do it though!

Hellohellohowareyou · 27/01/2015 10:39

Oh I could just eat some pickled onion monster munch now that you mention them dilly, yum!

Meerka · 27/01/2015 11:36

Hi thanksforthat .... do try to get pre-emptive meds yes. They are good at taking the edge of it for all but the very worst cases. It stops you sinking to the depths that you end up in without meds.

I actually got some english friends to send me over a 100pack of cyclizine and found some B6 here and took them together. They did help though sadly nothing stronger was available for a long time until someone from this thread send me some ondansetron ... fecking awful to have to take meds without supervision but I was absolutely desperate.

Cyclizine(or equivilent) + B6 are the mildest and best firstline meds generally. Ask your doctor for them and read up on the NICE guidelines that Mother Hen posted above, though I think you might have to copy paste them, the link didnt come out.

Also try to eat as much as you can -now- ... put weight on now to cushion you for the future weeks.

About the saliva - do you get the floods of saliva? If you do, you can spit them into an empty washed drinks packet through a straw. Washing takes the smell away and it helps with that awful flood that makes you feel so much worse. If you spit into an open cup it smells :/

Hello anyothergirl, congrats and commiseratoins. It's not pleasant to be in hospital but it is the right place. Diarrhoea + inability to swallow liquids could be pretty nasty indeed.

dilly glad to hear you're having a good day =)

LucindaE · 28/01/2015 21:27

Sorry everyone, been away for the day, will catch up tomorrow. Hope everybody is coping.

Hey all. I ended up at hospital yesterday and Monday for fluids. Thing is I still can't pass water today so thinking I may end up back there again at this rate. Has this happened to anyone else? Xx
