I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hello all, just checking in. 21 weeks now, still struggling with constant nausea but not much throwing up now, provided I don't do very much at all. Pelvis has completely gone though, on crutches but even with them I can't walk more than a few metres. Bit demoralising as a good bit earlier than last time and such a long way still to go. Oh well, over half way!

durham I found the total inconsistency in attitudes/recommendations/approach between consultants one of the worst things about being stuck in hospital for week after week. Literally every morning I would see the consultant - different every day - who was doing that day's round, who'd say one thing, shortly followed by my consultant a few minutes later who would promptly countermand it. AWFUL and so confusing - and to be honest you end up thinking that there can't be much science behind it at all if there can be such differences of opinion, it really erodes trust and confidence I think.

Though I have to say that I was in for so long that they did in the end actually start asking my opinion about what they should do!!

LucindaE · 21/09/2014 17:40

NoRoom I so agree with DurhamRed. If you've been constantly sick for twenty four hours and are pregnant, it's a medical emergency and nobody should argue against your having an urgent appointment because of the dangers of dehydration if it goes on too long.
Kalidasa Lovely to hear from you - that nausea is miserable, but I am so glad you are comparatively better. Lol about consultants consulting with you as their patient.
DurhamRed I am still so Angry about the rudeness of that nurse, who was walking evidence of a little knowledge being a bad thing. Do think about making a formal complaint when you get better. They should treat all patients with respect and keep their personal prejudices to themselves.
Waves to all.

Kalidasa Oh no about those crutches again. Sorry to hear that. Do you have to go up and downstairs?

OP posts:
freneticfox · 21/09/2014 19:30

Kali, good to hear there's at least some improvement, sorry to hear about the crutches though :(

Just days after stating I was over the worst, I have the mother of all bad weekends. I had to take Ondansetron Friday and Saturday, so to preempt the constipation, had Fybogel and lactulose. Been on the toilet most of the day unable to stop going. Add in nausea and I'm feeling the strain at 19weeks.

Meerka · 22/09/2014 07:58

ouch frenetic, I hope you've improved today! there are ups and downs ...

NoRoom yeah agreed with Mother Hen and durham, you're perfectly justified in getting an appointment.

kali lovely to hear from you, but sympathy on the dreadful nausea and the pelvis pain ... god, this is the preg from hell. Have you had the 20 week scan yet, on the good side? (sorry if you mentioned it, I forget everything :( )

Oklahoma · 22/09/2014 09:35

Morning all, not much to add really. Sympathy to those suffering and careful high fives to those having ok days.

We're just counting down the days and surviving.

DurhamRed · 22/09/2014 11:15

Morning everyone. Well after a relatively good day yesterday (only vomited once) I have woken up today with a rotten cold and my nausea is back with a vengeance. I have been sick three times already...when will this end??

LucindaE · 22/09/2014 12:16

DurhamRed Oh dear, this sounds bad, what meds did they send you home on? This may well be the worst of it, and almost certainly things will get better, so don't despair. Do you find - sorry to say, 'have you tried' I know how maddening it is- ice cubs or ice lollies or the juice of tinned fruit at all soothing?
NoRoom Did you manage to get an appointment? How are things now?
Freneticand Olkahoma Oh dear, hugs or gentle pats, it must feel to you as if this will never end, but of course, it will - and for Kalidasa too, though time goes by on leaden wings - sorry about that poetic fit, been reading a lot of Shakespeare recently, it's rubbing off!
Waves to Meerka and Everyone.

They sent me home with 8mg ondansetron and ranitidine. Have taken them this morning but 30 mins later I threw up. My appetite has just disappeared but will try to eat little and often and keep my fluids up.

Oklahoma · 22/09/2014 12:59

Durham sounds rough. It will end eventually. I never thought I would survive to 12 weeks and am 35 weeks now. Not much comfort now I know but you will get through it. Hang on in there.

basgetti · 22/09/2014 13:03

Sorry you are still suffering Durham. I'm finding the ondanestron really hit and miss at the moment. Hope you manage to keep some fluids down.

Kali sorry to hear you are already on crutches, it's so unfair, hope your nausea improves soon.

I've taken to my bed today, DP's day off and he popped out to get me a sandwich and crisps I really fancied. It didn't go well, I keep ruining my favourite foods!

Hope everyone else is surviving x

NoRoomForALittleOne · 22/09/2014 13:40

I got an appointment and have been prescribed stemetil and ondansetron. I have 3+ ketones in my urine Sad I need a good improvement to stay out of hospital...

basgetti · 22/09/2014 13:50

NoRoom you poor thing. You must feel so unwell with those ketones and you will definitely need fluids soon if the meds don't help. Really hope they work for you and you can at least start to keep drinks down x

NoRoomForALittleOne · 22/09/2014 14:38

I have a banging headache. I really want to eat something and feel normal.

LucindaE · 22/09/2014 20:56

NoRoom Oh dear, that sounds like a dehydration headache. No joy at all with jelly, or ice lollies?
DurhamRed Did you say you found flat coke horrible, or was that someone else? It's dismal you're suffering badly again so soon.
basgetti I hope you had a rest.
Oklahoma 'This Too Shall Pass' indeed, but it doesn't seem like it. Sorry you are still suffering at this stage. Is your Mumsnet name anything to do with the old musical? Always wondered.
Sorry so many are having a bad time...
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Oh dear, I hope NoRoom and DurhamRed haven't been so ill they needed to be admitted overnight?
xx

OP posts:
NoRoomForALittleOne · 23/09/2014 10:19

I'm still here. I'm feeling more ill than I was hoping for. I seem to remember ondansetron being better than this last time.

Is soup a good option? I know in theory it's great because it's liquid but does it usually stay down well for people?

LucindaE · 23/09/2014 10:44

NoRoom Poor you- my recollection is it wasn't too bad generally, but when you're at the point of nothing staying down, didn't and I just had tomato as it wasn't lumpy Shock. How do you find ice cream - I found the cheap sort OK, but some disagree. I found a huge shot of sugar through drinking the juice of tinned fruit helped a little.
xx

OP posts:
DurhamRed · 23/09/2014 11:12

Morning all, I'm still here. I'm feeling a little better this morning after a horrendous day yesterday. In find i feel a little better if lie down or sit up a little bit, however as soon as I move to go and take a shower or go to the loo it sets off nausea/vomiting. If I try to get dressed to go for a short walk I vomit and feel so dizzy. I feel like I'm confined to my bed/flat, I feel so useless.

NoRoomForALittleOne · 23/09/2014 11:58

I forgot about tinned fruit! I discovered cheap ice cream last night. It was good!

LucindaE · 23/09/2014 12:07

NoRoom That's one good thing, then. Smile.
DurhamRed It's depressing being stuck in bed. I read 'War and Peace' would you believe, the thought of it still makes me feel unwell, lol, and I wasn't very ill for long. The radio is good and someone mentioned audio books. This stage will pass, honestly!
xx

OP posts:
Oklahoma · 23/09/2014 13:44

Audiobooks saved my sanity. I highly recommend them.

Meerka · 23/09/2014 14:27

hehe lucinda War and Peace is pretty hard going at the best of times, respect to you that you read it during HG!

Might tinned peaches be good? they actually don't taste too awful on the way back up either (at least not for me)

DurhamRed · 23/09/2014 15:41

I've read so many books and watched/listened to many films whilst laid up in bed over the last few months...it just feels never ending at the moment.

I had some tinned tomatoes for lunch (I really like themas that aren'r acidic and they aren't too bad on the way up) but unfortunately I ended up vomiting them up...even after ondansetron :-( at least I managed to keep breakfast down.

LucindaE · 23/09/2014 17:57

DurhamRed and ToAvoid. It is very miserable and seems endless.
Meerka Oddly enough, I seem to have forgotten huge chunks of War and Peace, though I usually remember the plots of books. Oklahoma Audio books was a great idea as the printed word makes some feel worse.
