I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Great that the staff were doing the best you can but still really not the best when you are feeling so ill.

basgetti · 18/09/2014 07:49

Good luck with breakfast Durham, sounds like you had a lively night!

I'm about to go and drink lots of lucozade for my GTT, I'm retching already despite only having sips of water since last night so not sure how I'll manage! And after just one and a half days on Ondanestron my bowel is already blocked. I can't keep Movicol down, I have a big bottle of lactulose to try next!

Hope everyone else is feeling okay this morning x

LucindaE · 18/09/2014 08:58

basgetti Good luck with GTT, oh dear about retching already. It must be so tough, drinking all that. I'm assuming they provided a bowl if you have Hyperemesis?
DurhamRed I agree with others, you think they might find a room for you.
It seems weird about the woman being confused - surely not dementia, in a gynae ward -lol - I think if people are confused they should be somewhere where they don't keep other patients awake, and I hope NHS cuts haven't made that impossible. How do you feel this am?
Looks about anxiously.

oh good grief, durham, what a bloody awful night :( what on earth was thinking of?

Hows you, avoid?

frenetic lovely to hear you're improving. Hope that you can enjoy things from now on =) please let us know how you're doing from time to time!

DurhamRed · 18/09/2014 09:34

I've just had iv ondansetron so the sickness has eased a little. They are keeping me in today to see how I go on normal meds and consultant (who is fab) is going to fond out what steroid med is planned for me and will research the risks associated. He is great as he has a lot of time to answer my questions and allay fears. Unlike the miserable nurse this morning who told me the only reason in was sick was because I ate rich meals yesterday (veggie bake, cheese sandwich, toast) charming!! I told her if she could fond a bland meal on the menu card I'd choose it ( I don't eat red meat so meal options are limited). Hinestlyy, I must be wearing a placard that says kick me when I'm down...grrr AngrySad

DurhamRed · 18/09/2014 09:36

Apologies for the spelling mistakes, tires eyes and appealing typing skills on tablet! Smile

DurhamRed · 18/09/2014 09:36

Tired, appalling "sigh*

DurhamRed · 18/09/2014 09:40

Oh and apparently according to nurse I'm not allowed to drink Capri-sun orange as that also caused me to be sick. It's the only drink I crave, so only water for me. Bluh!!

DurhamRed · 18/09/2014 10:20

Hurrah! Dr says I can drink capri-sun!!!

NoRoomForALittleOne · 18/09/2014 11:45

Orange Capri Sun is my saving grace. Stupid nurse Angry

Just marking my place. I will hit the dreaded 8 weeks on Saturday and am bracing myself. It's always the point when sickness ramps up for me.

Oklahoma · 18/09/2014 11:56

Massive sympathy to all those suffering in the early stages. I know it feels like you have forever to go but you will get through it. Just take it hour by hour and day by day.

I'm down to less than 6 weeks now. I asked my consultant about getting induced (or at least encouraging labour) at 38 weeks. His response was to look disgusted and say 'nausea is not a reason to induce a baby early'. Anyone would think I was trying to murder my baby. I just want to be put out of my misery...

basgetti · 18/09/2014 12:08

Durham that nurse sounds a nightmare, she'll be recommending ginger biscuits next!

Oklahoma I understand how you feel, I was induced at 38 weeks with DS due to GD and I'm already half hoping I get it again just so I don't have to go to term.

Had the GTT, it was awful. They did provide a sick bowl and I sat near the door. I managed to get the blood tests done, although my veins kept collapsing, but I only made it to the car park afterwards before throwing up in a bush. Very dignified.

NoRoom good luck hitting 8 weeks, I hope things don't get too bad for you. I'll be 27 weeks on sunday, starting to think it's here for the duration.

mrsnec · 18/09/2014 12:23

Hi everyone!

Sorry to hear of those still in hospital and hope you get home soon and the new meds are effective.

oak, I'm 38 weeks now and for the past 2 weeks they've talked me out of elcs despite all the issues. Now I'm waiting for results of tests for PE and wishing I'd stood my ground over it. Totally understand where you're coming from.

I'm really uncomfortable anyway but add on the extra worry the nausea, reflux and insomnia I am very much looking forward to the end!

I think the elcs might be the better option rather than being induced. I've thought about that but I don't like the thought of waiting ages and constant examinations. And the fact you could end up with a 3 day labour whilst still suffering. I'm also considering all the old wives tales as well!

mrsnec · 18/09/2014 12:25

Sorry bas, x post, well done for getting through that!

DurhamRed · 18/09/2014 13:12

basgetti you have no idea how many times I've been told to eat/drink ginger...even by the doctors!!

The best comment I've had was 'in my day hyperemesis wasn't even heard of. We just got on with it and wouldn't have dreamed of phoning the doctor. I was sick every day for 9 months and still went to work...in a restaurant' *sigh" this was from a healthcare assistant who i don' think is that much older than me.

Meerka · 18/09/2014 14:23

Well she didn't have it that badly then did she? ... is about the kindest thing I can bring myself to say to that. I'm trying to bite back the rest.

mrsnec if you want an elcs stick to your guns. Inductions can and do fail and the wait can be hell. Knowing what I know now, if there was any faint remote possibility of an ELCS I'd have had one.

okla having just said that inductions can fail ... at the same time I really understand where you are coming from.

bas sounds a horrible experience. When do you get the results? I'm afraid that if you still are bad at 27 weeks it does sound like it's there to stay :( though you never quite know.

durham hope you are feeling a bit better this afternoon

freneticfox · 18/09/2014 17:44

I have a question about indigestion.. Every meal since yesterday lunch has caused a 10-min wave of nausea that is more uncomfortable than anything else. I'm nearly 19 weeks.. Is this a new type of sickness or the start of the heartburn?

I've never had heartburn, not sure what to expect :/

freneticfox · 18/09/2014 18:24

Also sod's law that I posted about being over the worst; I've been feeling utterly rotten this afternoon.

mrsnec · 18/09/2014 20:06

Durham, I'm not sure if I'd be able to stay polite in that situation!

Meerka, I think it probably will happen I am just feeling at the moment like I need to do it as close to my due date as possible I'm not sure why. but I'm 100 percent elcs over induction for sure.

Freneric, yes this has been my first experience of heartburn too. And that describes how it started for me. I thought I'd escaped it for ages. I haven't taken anything for it though. It's just been a case of trial and error with the triggers. And eating even more bland food! And earlier in the evening so I don't suffer before I try and sleep.

DurhamRed · 18/09/2014 20:57

Meerka & mrsnec believe me if I hadn't been feeling so poorly at the time I would have said a few strong words to her. It did upset me as she promptly repeated it to her colleagues loudly in front of me too, made me feel a real fraud for being admitted (2nd time). I remember vomiting in front of her and she just completely ignored me.

Has anybody else come across attitudes like this regarding their hyperemesis?

LucindaE · 18/09/2014 21:25

Durham If I was you, I'd complain when you are feeling better. I think you have a long time in which to do it, and that is just plain rude and unacceptable. Ignorance...Angry. Ignore the loud mouthed fool! Gentle pats on offer, you don't need that as well as feeling so ill.
Basgetti Oh, poor you, it was amazing you got through the test without being sick. At least it's over.
freneticfox Think you asked about heartburn - it's a horrible burning, that was the first symtom of pregnancy I had before period was late.
Waves to mrsnec and Everyone.
xx

Just quickly marking place will hopefully manage to catch up with thread tomorrow! Night allxx

DaddyLeicester · 18/09/2014 23:32

DR Nicky was too poorly to cope with things like that whilst in hospital, which is where I helped. Hope you have someone there, partner or family, who can speak to the staff in a friendly assertive way to speak up for and help you.

Things here are looking up.

Nicky has been confined to the sofa, but we spent the night in bed together yesterday, so that was nice to be side by side rather than separated across the room. Still complained of significant tummy pain.

However today Nicky tried eating little and often, quite by chance and the pain subsided. :-)

So by request I ran an errand for the following

Capri sun (top tip?)
Ribena cartons. Apparently any drink in a glass that's been left standing tastes bad.
Cereal bars
Biscuit bars
Toffee!
More ice
Sunflower seeds
Plain hula hoops
Mini cheddars
Plain crisps, I got sun bites.
Small bags of ready prepared fruit

So it seems positive stuff and the advice may be true. I asked if the recent reluctance to eat much was related to vomiting so much and not being confident about if it'd come back up. This seems the case.

Oklahoma · 19/09/2014 09:35

To all those suffering with heartburn, if you're struggling try asking your GP / consultant for ranatidine. Mine started as heartburn and became full on acid reflux. Rennies didn't touch it and Gaviscon just made me sick. Ranatidine has also helped (a bit) with the nausea.

Daddy I really struggled psychologically to eat as I became so afraid of it coming back up. That is something to watch out for. My midwife suggested writing down everything I ate and drank and then crossing out what came back up so you can at least vaguely see what calories you're managing to keep down.

Durham just anger!! Some people shouldn't be in a caring profession!!

Hi to everyone else!

DurhamRed · 19/09/2014 10:02

I am so confused with the siffence of opinion from the doctors/consultants. Yesterday the consultant was so supportive and concerned that I've not been holding food/fluids down and was considering the next level of treatment. Then this morning I was sick again (still not holding food down) and different consultant came round and told me I could go home today with ondansetron and ranitidine and said that I was going to be sick every day and to ezppedt it to last the whole of my pregnancy
