Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Expect it to last the whole of my pregnancy (nice!) and to come back in when vomiting gets worse...I'm totally confused with the differences of opinion each day. I'm happy to be going home don't get me wrong, bit just so exhausted about treatments.

Meerka · 19/09/2014 10:11

yeah, it's all luck :( Have you got the name of the better consultant? it might be worth trying to contact them directly once you're home.

By the way, from the Preg Sickness SOS site that lucinda linked above:

*"Well they didn't have this in my day, we just had to get on with it

On the contrary, they did have this in your day. It has been noted as a complication of pregnancy since Ancient Greek times and was the main cause of death of mothers in early pregnancy up until the 1940s when anti sickness drugs began to be used. You may have got on with it, but you didn't have hyperemesis."*

there's some good lines in that section, specially later on. sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/what-to-say-when

daddy glad to hear Nicky is finding some good foods. Do have a good trawl of the sites in the original post, there's some more options there. Is Nicky fancying Melon or Watermelon at all? that can help too. yeah about the drinks standing around, no good at all. Did I mention trying the drink very hot of very cold?

basgetti · 19/09/2014 10:18

I've got emergency appt with the GP in an hour. Spent the last hour throwing up. Couldn't even keep the Ondanestron down, that was supposed to be my saving grace. So fed up.

Durham Thanks

DurhamRed · 19/09/2014 10:37

Thanks Meerka that's a fab bit of info. You're right too in that it seems to be luck regarding treatment...it's all very confusing.

Daddy mini cheddars and capri-sun orange are my 2 staples...along with peanut butter on toast. If i can't keep those down then I know I'm heading for bad times! The weird thing is that although I know I'm going to be sick and have little or no appetite I have not gone off food at all (I try to eat little and often every day). I can watch foodie programmes and find myself wishing I could eat whatever they are having. I think I've resigned myself to the fact I'm going to be sick whatever I eat so I may as well enjoy the food I eat as micxh as possible before i throw it up again (I tend to steer away from the rich foods).

LucindaE · 19/09/2014 10:55

Basgetti DurhamRed freneticfoxand everyone Oh dear, not happy news generally. Basgetti That's horrible, I hope they can do something, it's so exhausting. Durham I'm still furious at that unprofessional outburst frm the nurse. Don't despair, the majority of people with this do improve a lot, and even the unlucky minority don't remain anything like as ill as they are in the early stages. Definitely complain about the nurse when you feel better or she'll just go on treating Hyperemesis patients abusively. freneticfox Really sorry about feeling foul.
Oklahoma I haven't commented on your induction as I had such a bad experience with one I can't be objective, probably I was unlucky - but whatever you decide, I'll say early that I hope it all goes brilliantly; you deserve it. When you've suffered throughout like you it's very hard to stand the thought of being pregnant any longer than you have to.
Waves to everyone, including Daddy with that informative post, Meerka elizabethsmummrsnec ToAvoid and Room.
Apologies for anyone rudely overlooked.

GP couldn't really do anything, I've got all the meds available. I kind of knew that but hoped there might be something else! He offered to ring the ward as I may need some fluids again if it carries on, I've said I'll see how I go over the weekend. I've got my parents on standby for childcare if needed so just going to see how I get on the next couple of days. Hope everyone is feeling okay x

DurhamRed · 19/09/2014 15:20

Basgetti I really do feel for you. I really do hope you feel better soon and manage to stay out of hospital. Flowers

Elletorrito · 19/09/2014 19:56

Hi guys. Just dropping in to offer some encouragement. Daddy have you tried McDonald's / Kentucky chicken, the spicy wings? Basically hangover food. Weirdly stuff I actually hate normally and do again now I'm feeling better.

Meerka that SOS website is brilliant. Had a bad moment getting my whooping cough jab this morning and the nurse brought me a ginger biscuit! She meant well but I wish I'd said how ineffective and actually vomit inducing they are. What is it with ginger?

Much better and week 31 now. There is hope guys!

NoRoomForALittleOne · 19/09/2014 20:29

Just popped on to catch up and thought I'd add my experience for Daddy about foods that were good/to avoid. So ladies, scroll down if you can't manage to read names of foods...

What may be good one day may not be another. Today DH bought me some balsamic vinegar crisps. I think maybe I wanted them two nights ago. Can't think of anything more painful to throw up today. My DH is often upset that by the time he makes something for me, I no longer fancy it. I can't help it and it's not his fault, it's just how things are.

A few foods that tend to stay down if something is going to and aren't too bad to throw up (for me) as they don't burn, clog together, taste horrific etc:

Orange Capri sun
Cornflakes
Rich tea biscuits
Oven chips
Processed chicken (bake in the oven type thing)
Ready salted hula hoops and Pringles
Apple juice

Things that have been VERY bad to throw up:

Coke
Ginger anything
Rice
Anything made from wheat (clogs together) even toast
Nuts
Seeds
Raisins/sultanas etc
Tablets of any description
Lamb
Anything spicy
Anything fatty
Any fruit

Try not to worry about Nicky having a balanced diet for a few weeks. She will do better to keep something down than throw up fruit, for example. She may also prefer cold food because of the smell of cooked/cooking food.

I hope that helps and isn't too horrible for other women to see. I'll probably try and skip over the post myself so I don't have to read the 'bad foods' list for a while.

elizabethsmum · 19/09/2014 21:42

so sorry to everyone particularly suffering at the moment. great food advice- I also managed with sucking orange ice lollies/calipos sometimes.
from memory my list would be;

chicken & mushroom pasties (cold)
filet of fish
choc nesquik (ice cold milk)
chips/ ketchup
haribo fizzy sweets
elderflower presse

very remiss of dr to say to you that hg likely to last for whole pg durham - there is absolutely no way to predict this whatsoever! I would totally ignore their ridiculous comment tbh.

hoping for improvements for everyone asap.

mrsnec · 20/09/2014 05:20

Great list no room!

I'd add yoghurt to the list of bad food. Not sure I'm ever going to be able to eat it again! Oh and pickled beetroot that was nasty!

I second what's been said about fast food. I've not had it very often but when I have its stayed down and I very much enjoyed it. I go for a chicken burger happy meal and chocolate milkshake.

daddy, my doctors were on at me about having a balanced diet and still are. I'm ignoring them on that score. It's impossible with so many food aversions.

Today I got told my Pe scare was due to high bp caused by too much salt in my diet. It's only 120/90 and they want me to cut out everything with added salt!

Totally agree with Elizabeth'smum., Durham, it does vary a lot, as do a lot of things relating to the condition everyone on here is different.

LucindaE · 20/09/2014 13:33

DurhamRed I may have missed something - but are you out yet?
basgetti Hugs. Just wondering if the number in the blurb might have some recommendation the gp hasn't thought of?
Elletorrito So lovely of you to come on to encourage others and so glad you feel so much better.
Waves to all. About foods not too obnoxious to throw up, for me jelly was
good, if you can call it food, and also, ice cream but others disagree about ice cream. I didn't mind coke or Lucozade or Ironbru myself, but I see coke is one of mrsnec's horrible memories. I found pasta a nightmare, but again, others don't mind it.

Hi Lucinda I was discharged yesterday evening. Hads a good nihhrs sleep and woke up feeling a little better. Started feeling very nauseous about midday bit I've managed to keep my lunch down, so all good so far!

Hope everyone is having a good weekend so far :-)

basgetti · 20/09/2014 17:25

I perked up a bit today, managed to take DS to an event at lunchtime, just an hour long and I was able to sit down through it so I coped! Feeling very drained now, but managed to not be sick yet so fingers crossed.

Glad you're home Durham, hope everyone else is feeling okay x

DaddyLeicester · 20/09/2014 20:40

Hi

Checking back in

Meerka Nicky is a bit fussy with fruit and melon is something she doesn't like, or chilled, it'd be a great source of fluid and sugar :-)

DR Capri-Sun didn't go down well. Too strong. However Ribena cartons are going great guns, as is normal Ribena from a bottle over lots of crushed ice. I keep having a sneaky glass too, it's that nice!

All Re-read the NICE guidelines on ginger They were in there in 2008 but it cites a subsequent review where its effectiveness was all cast out. Remind your healthcare professional that they are behind with their training! ;-)

Nicky continues to go from strength to strength. The ondanestron is keeping the sickness at bay and the regular eating is righting all the tummy pains. Today we have had more weetabix (a staple), cup of decaff tea (rare these days) and rich tea biscuit, a few snacks in between and amazingly a whole can of Heinz spaghetti on not one but two slices of toast. Every little extra thing is a positive step.

We'd planned on going out today, but a headache and fatigue came on so an afternoon snooze was required. So by no means a complete recovery and of course, not to be expected.

We're 14 weeks today. Are we on the backside of the HG curve?

Oh, our down's letter came through today, Low risk, which has been concern as we are both in our late 30s. So it's been a largely positive Saturday.

ToAvoidConversation · 21/09/2014 08:25

Woohoo good news Durham and Daddy. Lovely lovely lovely.

NoRoomForALittleOne · 21/09/2014 09:05

And so it begins...

8 weeks yesterday, nothing staying down...

Meerka · 21/09/2014 10:00

oh room, have you got meds? please do try to get some tomorrow. I gues syou have Ketostix? sympathy :/

durham glad to hear you're out. Hopefully that's the last time you'll be admitted until the birth!

mrsnec · 21/09/2014 10:14

Morning all,

Yes glad there are some improvements but sorry to hear that room. Daddy, totally agree about ginger! I even found it was in my pregnancy vitamins and had to change brands! (from seven seas to pregnacare in case anyone needed to know that.) I agree with Meerka it was about 22 weeks for me but I hope it's better for Nicky. Great shes getting there with the food. If she wants to try more fruit I wasn't very good with melon. Frozen grapes were good at my worst if that helps.

basgetti · 21/09/2014 11:48

NoRoom poor you, sorry it has started again like clockwork, definitely get some meds asap.

I'm paying a bit for my outing yesterday, but it was worth it to see DS having such a good time and getting to do something nice with him for a change. Having a lazy day today, DP is working til 6 so we are just snuggled on sofa in our pjs watching films. Had to take full 8 mg of Ondanestron this morning, I usually only do a half dose, but it seems to be working at the moment!

Hope everyone else is feeling okay today x

DurhamRed · 21/09/2014 12:13

Morning all, feeling a little better today. Have managed to get out of bed and join my OH on the sofa. I may even be able to manage a little cooked food at lunch I think (won't over do it but I fancy some vegetables).

Hope everyone is feeling a little better today too.

LucindaE · 21/09/2014 15:00

NoRoom Oh, no, you poor thing. As others day, do rush to get meds, but you know better than me the longer you leave it, the worse it gets. Really sorry you didn't escape, how disappointing.
Glad that basgetti and DurhamRed feel a bit better.
Waves to Everyone.

Do you think it's acceptable to ask for an urgent appointment at the GP's tomorrow?

DurhamRed · 21/09/2014 17:10

NoRoom If nothing is staying down or is perfectly acceptable to ask for urgent appt.
