I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

purple hi! I think the nausea is worse than vomiting to be honest. Mentally at least anyway. Plus I guess at the moment you're also contending with the general exhaustion that comes with the first trimester. I hope it passes soon for you. One thing I will say is; sod the housework! It can probably wait. Unless you wake up to a living room full of woodlice like I did this morning. Still no idea where they are coming from, little buggers. Anyway, unless urgent (my 18 month old eats all kinds of crap off the floor (won't touch veg but mmmm fluff!)) leave the housework until you feel up to it and rest. Rest is the only thing that helps me I have come to realise. X

AuntieVenom · 09/11/2014 04:21

I was actually able to go out today and it was awesome! We're coming into Summer so it was lovely and warm. To top it all off I've been able to keep my lunch and some soft drink down, so feeling heaps better. Long may it continue!

Newshoesplease · 09/11/2014 09:22

Great news venom!

bubalou · 09/11/2014 09:44

Hi all,

Hope you're all doing well.

Since staring on promethazine on Monday I am feeling a lot better. It was very slow at first - the medication knocked me out a bit the first few times I think as I was so weak from lack of food etc.

However over the past 6 days I have very gradually eaten a little more, drank a little more and done a little more. I have done the school run twice,I went to a few shops yesterday. I have eaten some cooked food and yesterday my craving for chinese was overwhelming so I gave in.

I may not have eaten a whole plate but the duck pancakes and chilli beef was yummy!

I'm still trying not to do too much and take it easy as I don't want to relapse like before.

I might go to the doctors next week to ask to switch to something that doesn't make me as drowsy as I find it hard to take it during the day if I need it.

Smile

Welcome to Purple I think if you find it hard to move from the sofa, it's pretty bad nausea. I think there's a grey area between Hyperemesis and bad morning sickness and nausea is miserable.
Glad to hear good news from people and Muddy woodlice, ugh- I wouldn't hurt them but I can't bear them. NewShoesWillow Freckle I hope you too get some relief soon. I hope basgetti is managing. Room how are things? Thinking of you.

Hi Purple. I have had a good day today, mainly as the girls were out with ex so i had dh waiting on me hand and foot. Managed to eat again today and have discovered cold milkshakes don't make the nausea worse. I also had a lovely phone call from my 86 year old granny who had worked out what was going on. Intrestingly she said she had really bad pregnancy sickness which is why she only had two kids when she wanted more. So she was very sympathetic and very very pleased to hear about a possible great grand child. I didn't want to tell her due to the high miscarriage risk but its lovely to have her on the end of a phone and have that moral support.

Newshoes i hope the move is going well.

Meerka · 09/11/2014 21:31

willow they don't know why HG hits some people but there is apparently some evidence of a genetic link. So it makes sense about your grandmother. Lovely to hear she was so supportive :)

bub did you try cyclizine? it's a weaker version of the same thing, so it might make you drowsy but not as badly. Both of them are old-style anti-histamines. or there's others that work in different ways, like promethazine and metoclopramide, they could be worth a try.

muddy woodlice ... EWWW! how did you cope!

purple the nausea is just awful. The worst bit of it. Worse even than the vomitting I reckon

okla lovely to see you pop in, how are you and Oklette doing? :)

Newshoesplease · 09/11/2014 21:41

willow so lovely that you could speak to your grandmother. It helps having support.

Had an awful day sickness wise but ii think I was a bit stressed.

Hubby and mil have pretty much done the move between them. They've been bloody saints!

muddylettuce · 10/11/2014 07:45

Morning all,
willow glad you found something you can tolerate and had an easier day.
newshoes glad you're all moved now, at least that's over with. Unpacking can be done gradually at least.
Lucinda and meerka the woodlice are taunting me, they only come out after I've dusted and hoovered!
My dad and step mum came down and took dd and I out for lunch yesterday. I was nervous but actually it was great, I didn't have to make lunch and I had a creme brulee that almost made me feel normal. Then the nausea and shakes kicked in so we came home. I just about held on until dd went to bed then crashed. Felt horrendous and still do this morning. Never mind, it was almost worth it for that creme brulee.
I'm coming up to the end of the 1st trimester, hoping for a bit of relief soon. X

muddylettuce · 10/11/2014 07:48

Re. Genetic link, I don't have grand mothers to talk to, my mother says she didn't really have any sickness but dp's mum definitely had hg from what she tells me. Wonder if I can blame the genes from that side of the family!

Newshoesplease · 10/11/2014 07:53

muddy glad you were able to get out-sorry you feel shit now though! Unfair.

I've been unable to find a genetic link. There's a few snapped branches on my family tree though lol. Just pray my sister doesn't get it if/when she has kids. ..

basgetti · 10/11/2014 08:49

Hi all, how is everyone? I didn't have a great day yesterday, started well and we went out for lunch but I think I got a bit carried away with having not vomited for over a week and pushed myself a bit too much physically, ended up being pretty sick yesterday pm. Still got rotten pelvic pain and baby not turned yet, I think she is trying to and it bloody hurts! I get a big shifting mass pushing against me making me yelp, and what feels like kicks in my bladder! Attending the antenatal clinic tomorrow morning to see doctor, hopefully can come up with a plan.

Glad you had a better day Willow, hope everyone else has an improved week xx

Meerka · 10/11/2014 09:34

bas, I've posted this before but it's so cute and so accurate ....

img-9gag-lol.9cache.com/photo/a49Ro9m_700b_v1.jpg

basgetti · 10/11/2014 10:14

That made me smile Meerka! Still trying to decide whether I want to face the pain of her turning or the pain and hassle of a section. I keep thinking I want her to turn but as soon as she tries to move it hurts so much I think please just stay where you are!

Did have a positive experience this weekend, a friend of DP's had a baby last week and I saw lots of pics on fb. Baby is ridiculously cute and looks very similar to my DS when he was born, I actually had a fleeting feeling of excitement and broodiness. It didn't last long but it's a start! x

muddylettuce · 10/11/2014 10:59

Oh god. I feel awful. It's mad how driving 15 minutes and eating my lunch on a different chair can cause all this. Although it could have been the horrendous night I had, 4 very loud storms as well as the usual waking from DD who seems to be going through a phase of it. The storms were so loud and the hail and rain so heavy it kept setting off car alarms! Hasn't stopped raining today which makes me feel slightly less guilty about my sofa day. Counting the hours until naptime. I have terrible stomach ache too. Urgh.
Bas sorry you've had a rough time too. I hope baby turns herself before you have to make a decision. I seem to remember all fours was a good position to be in...why, I have no idea?! X

LucindaE · 10/11/2014 11:35

Muddy Very brave to drive. Couldn't bear the thought of it when suffering myself. I'm so glad you have an MIL who knows how bad it is!
basgetti Best wishes for apointment. How far along did you say you are? at about seven months mine did do a complete somersault, but so quickly it was over before I took in how painful it was. If possible I hope that happens to you.
Willow I didn't know you have a high mc rate; sympathies, it spoils things quite apart from the Hyperemesis. I had had one mmc, and it made me very nervous throughout. It's nice about your Granny.
Mereka That is interesting about genetic link; in my own case, there is a family history of migraine, but though I think they are connected with hormones, none of Hyperemesis that I've heard of. I have asked people on these threads if they suffer from migraines, cystitis or mc's - there ma be a link - and quite a few do; also, travel sickness as a kid.
NewShoes I am so happy DP and MIL did it all.
Hope everyone is coping. Still wondering about Freckle Roomforalittleone etc.
xx

Lucinda I'm 34+1 today so running out of time! MW said I will get another scan at 36 weeks and if no change they will offer to try ECV or book a section. I'm not willing to have the ECV attempted so my options now are she turns soon or a section. Just a waiting game now! I'm feeling a bit better today, just grazing on snacks little and often. I'm not sure if my sickness yesterday was even related to HG or was more that I ate to much and I'm running out of room in there! Fingers crossed it was just a blip.x

WillowHouse · 10/11/2014 13:03

Lucinda if I get to 12 weeks I'm out of the danger zone. My DH has problems with his sperm - it feels almost ironic that we spent 18 months visiting fertility docs and praying to get pregnant and now all i want is for the pregnancy to be over. I'll cope better with the HG when I know I'll more than likely get a baby at the end. Not even got a scan date yet Sad

Muddy i'm impressed you can still drive. I can't even get out of bed.

The genetic thing is intresting. My bio sis hasn't had a baby yet but both of us had awful travel sickness as kids. Migranes run in the family too.

bubalou · 10/11/2014 14:46

Thanks meerka - I'm definitely going to ask. The doctor was very nice but didn't seem to have much of an idea so consulted a book before choosing to put me on promethazine. Confused

Haha. It is working ok but means if I am feeling sick and it's the afternoon - I am suffering rather than taking a tablet as I have to pick up DS from school.

Will call doctors to try and get an appointment to hopefully swap. Smile

DurhamRed · 10/11/2014 15:08

Hi all, how is everyone this afternoon?

It's been really interesting to read everyones thoughts regarding genetic relationship to hg. I asked my mum if anyone in our family has had a history of mc, hg or severe morning sickness or migraines and she states that my mum, sister, grandmothers and my aunts have no history of any of the above...so looks like I'm the unlucky one.

I'm still suffering constant nausea but luckily I am able to eat and drink without vomiting. However I still vomit or suffer severe nausea if driving or as a passenger, so will be interesting if I am able to return to work next Monday (have doctors appointment on weds morning for return to work review, if they can recommend working hours outside of peak traffic times I should be ok...the least time in the car the better!). It's really strange, I've never ever suffered from travel sickness, not even as a child, it happened as soon as I became pg...here's hoping it stops once baby is here. Muddy I know how you feel re: driving for short periods, it can really drive the nausea through the roof!

HexyQueen · 10/11/2014 15:25

Hi guys. Can I join please? I'm 10 weeks tomorrow. Been vomiting dozens of times with most food & drink for 4 weeks now. GP admitted me to hospital 2 weeks ago with hyperemesis & v low blood pressure (75/35) but as I wasn't clinically dehydrated they sent me home after anti-emetic injection and gave me prochlorperazine pills (1 or 2, twice daily). Improved slightly but been v nauseous & repeatedly sick since then, despite taking 1x pill 4/day. I am keeping a little food down (eg,only 1/2 plain pitta' no real meals) in morning but nothing after 5pm. Very week, sleeping almost constantly & bed bound. I also have ME, RA, & migraines - which are really troubling me last few days. Any advice? I'd prefer not to be admitted to hospital as my other illnesses get much worse in hospital, all the lights & noise etc. I also have a 4 year old DD, who my DH is looking after alone as I'm just too I'll to do anything ATM.

WillowHouse · 10/11/2014 16:31

hi hexy glad you found the thread Smile

TheJiminyConjecture · 10/11/2014 17:35

Hi all,

I'm going to confess that I haven't read the thread for purely selfish reasons as anything related just triggers the sick.

I have a 12 week scan coming up on Thursday and I'm hoping that I will start to feel more positive. For me, the mental battle is just as hard as the physical one. I'm sick of being in bed and only leaving the house to go to hospital.

Sending you all positive vibes and strength Flowers

LucindaE · 10/11/2014 18:12

HexyQueen welcome, sorry you feel so foul but nice to have you with us. My usual question - have you got kestostix to check for dehydration yourself, available from chemists? I think it's worthy asking if they can give you different or additional meds as these don't seem to be helping you much. How are sips of flat coke, ice lollies, jelly, ice cream (cheap seems best, for some reason) and nibbles of crisps)?
Willow Hugs, that is very mean of fate.
babalou Good idea.
basgetti Keeping fingers crossed .
DurhamRed Mother Hen is always anxious to hear about returns to work.
TheJiminyConjecture the best of luck for the scan - chances overwhelming you'll come back grinning if still sick.
Muddy DurhamRed Meerka and everyone, it's fascinating as others say to see how with some people, there are hereditary links and not with others.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.
I'll probably need to start a new thread tomorrow, by the looks of it, and I'll try and not mess the link up this time.
xx
