I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Booboostoo · 03/09/2014 13:57

Thank you everyone! If you don't mind I will lurk on the thread to see how other people I know get on.

Congratulations boo!!

jen I second what okla said about cold fruit. I've also found really runny ready brek/porridge to be manageable. Look after yourself.

Meerka · 03/09/2014 19:13

just don't try weetabix, god that really tastes vile on the return

basgetti · 03/09/2014 19:21

Congratulations Boo, lovely picture!

Jen definitely see your GP, I needed hospitalisation with that much vomiting and you must be feeling really weak. I also find cyclizine works for short periods but the effects can wear off after a while and you may need to try different meds now. Good luck.

I haven't vomited for a couple of days now, still quite retchy but I've felt a bit better. Managed a day out today with DS and DP for last day of the school hols, even had lunch out! Bought some maternity clothes and a couple of bits for the baby. Still not feeling very positive or excited but hoping to fake it til I make it!

Hope everyone is feeling okay x

basgetti · 03/09/2014 19:22

God yes avoid weetabix. Bleurgh!

ToAvoidConversation · 03/09/2014 20:23

I made the mistake of making ready brek before bed one night as I thought it would fill me up and stop the nausea overnight. Stupid stupid mistake.

Celebrating one week with no vomiting. This time last week I was in hospital, too sick to hold a conversation or read a book. I'm still off work but feeling so much better.

Meerka · 03/09/2014 20:31

nice to hear, avoid ... quite a difference!

jenhad84 · 04/09/2014 09:38

Hi All,

Thanks for your responses and advice. Tried to get a doc's appointment, next available one is not for over 2 weeks. Tried explaining to the receptionist, thats way too long. She has put me down for a telephone call, so hopefully they might prescribe some different meds over the phone?

Did manage to keep a sandwich down at lunch yesterday, felt like a huge achievement! For the rest of the day had ice pops, which really helped.

Spending the day in bed again today. And I'm not going to feel guilty about it, knowing how much it will help. Thanks again Meerka for the lecture yesterday :-) it helped me put things into perspective.

Booboostoo I can't tell you how amazing it is to read your post! It reminded me there is hope for us all yet! xx

ToAvoidConversation · 04/09/2014 09:45

Jen 2 weeks! That is ridiculous. Did you try asking for an emergency appointment? Our doctors is the same but when I've asked for an emergency appt (done about 4 times in the last few weeks) I've managed to get one. Really hope you get your phone call soon. Have also been told that if I can't see my doctor that I can call the Maternity Assessment unit at the hospital or A&E if its at night.

Meerka · 04/09/2014 09:48

jen I hope so. If you are able to, read up on the NICE guidelines, Lucinda linked them above. Also the preg sickness support website has some good info on the meds. But the NICE is the government's own Best Practise body for medical issues so you may get further. The stated aim of treatment for severe nausea and vomming in preg is to enable you to have a decent quality of life, and they name safe meds.

If he's still reluctant, it might be worth asking the doc outright for something better like metoclopramide or promethazine or domperidone. Ondansetron is the best but is also most powerful so it's best to work up to it (also it's safe for the baby but bungs you up like glue).

Also, I can't remember, do you monitor your ketones levels? you can order ketostix from amazon or ask someone to get them from the chemist. Pee on the stick, the deeper the colour the more dehydrated you are. anything 3+++ is serious Treatment territory. Don't hang around.

Good luck.

mampam · 04/09/2014 11:03

Congratulations Booboo you look amazing for just having had a c-section and your dc are gorgeous. I'm glad to hear you can kiss DH again, hopefully the same will happen for me!

Hope everyone else is as well as can be.

I've made a dr's appt as I cannot bear this reflux/heartburn anymore. I've also started to feel worse again. Last night I actually came very close to vommitting for the first time in quite a few weeks. Just over 10 weeks to go and counting.

Oklahoma · 04/09/2014 11:21

Mam I was the same a few weeks ago and the doc gave me ranatidine which has been amazing. It doesn't make it totally go away but it is soooo much better. Good luck!

Jen bed sounds like exactly where you should be. Please take it easy. Trying to do too much just makes things worse. And you don't always realise at the time that you're doing too much.

ToAvoid & Bas yay for better weeks (although I appreciate it's all relative). Long may the improvement continue!

Hi Meerka, Lucinda and other pillars of the thread.

ToAvoidConversation · 04/09/2014 12:39

Jen you can also buy ketostix at chemists too. I got mine in a Lloyds pharmacy.

mampam · 04/09/2014 14:03

Okla I'm going to write the name of it down and ask for it when I see the GP. I just feel awful and it doesn't seem to be brought on by just eating. I absolutely shattered too as I'm hardly sleeping.

jenhad84 · 04/09/2014 14:12

hiya,

doctor finally rang up. She's prescribed Promethazine but just for 7 days. And said she will ring me again tomorrow and review it in 7 days time.
She mentioned that sometimes a trip to hospital and a drip can help get people back on track, but said we would try these new tablets first.

So fingers crossed they work more than the cyclizine have!

jenhad84 · 04/09/2014 14:22

Also wanted to mention I have been using the ketostix, and they are ok. I think my efforts to stay hydrated are paying off!

I mentioned i used these to a consultant last week, he gave me a right lecture, as if i had bought them from a dark back alley and wouldn't be able to comprehend the results anyway.

He said to me, "if your not keeping anything down give us a ring" I asked who 'us' actually was and if he had a number I could ring. He said oh "erm ring your doctor", which I then told him its a 2 week wait for an appointment and a 6 week wait to see a midwife.

It's no wonder people get so depressed and frustrated and feel completely alone in this.

At least I got to speak to a doctor on the phone today and get some new meds. And at least I'm checking my keytones myself! But I can't help feeling that there's a complete lack of care, support and understanding for people suffering with HG - as if pregnancy wasn't as terrifying enough already!

Rant over!

freneticfox · 04/09/2014 15:02

Lovely pic, Boo. Serves as a beautiful reminder of what will be coming at the end of this long, challenging road!

Having an ok day, but as ever it's my evenings that are the problem. Definitely noticing a reduction in the length of time I'm crippled by nausea/retching. I've also developed a wee bump seemingly overnight, and it's actually fairly firm, not just wobbly/flabby! That certainly gives me a boost :)

LucindaE · 04/09/2014 19:18

Jen Glad you've got some meds prescribved, but unfortunately you'll need them almost certainly for more than a week - and may need stronger stuff, so don't hesitate to ask for alternatives if they don't work. Are you to ring again in a few days if still suffering? Glad ketones OK, suprising. I swore by jelly as something not too disgusting on the way up, and I personally didn't object to ice cream, but I'm sorry to say others disagree about that, seems a matter of taste. Melon?
Mampam Heartburn is miserable. I'm so glad you've got an appointment and like Olkahoma so many swear by ranatadine.
Frenetic Glad about bump.
Lottgie Oh dear, I hope you are not totally exhausted through forcing yourself into work thi8s last week. Did you say you were a teacher?
ToAvoid and Madbunnygirl How are things?
Waves to Meerka. So delighted about Booboostoo.
Waves to Everyone. Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.
xx

Jen sounds awful, and two weeks is an absolute eternity in our lives at the moment!!

Thanks for all the advice on my doses of promethazine ladies! You are all very right about staying on it. I had a hideous day yesterday ending up with me being sick all over myself in bed! Honestly it was quite comical really. Then I threw up the coco pops and calpol I had afterwards. Can definitely recommend that combination, was almost pleasant coming back up. Then sick again this morning. Oh and I managed to pee myself whilst puking last night! Such a joy! So anyway. I'm staying on the meds!

Had my 12 week scan today and all is well, two babies in there waving at us, phew. And managed to go out for lunch which was fab.

I think I'm having bad days about once a week, which is amazing compared to spending an entire 72 hours without emerging from my bedroom.

Onwards ladies. And soon this shall pass :) xx

Lottiedoubtie · 04/09/2014 19:52

lucinda yes I am a teacher, but one without a timetable this week so I've mainly been doing exam result analysis and departmental admin for my colleagues this week so it's not been too bad. One more day tomorrow then mat leave begins officially! It's been good to keep busy even though I'm knackered, it's stopped me stressing about the csection (well a bit, getting more scared by the day). Upping my meds seems to have got the nausea back under control. Can't wait to not be dependent on them anymore!
