How many scans have you had?

I'm 32 weeks and enjoying a pretty easy problem-free pregnancy so I've only had the 12 and 20 wk scans and my regular midwife appointments so far.
But I feel sometimes that I'm alone in having so few scans. A couple of friends had babies last year and went to hospital a few times for scans when they were worried about babies movements and a guy at work today whose wife is due the same time seemed shocked that I hadn't had a scan since 20 wks.
Even yesterday I was at the mw and I asked the student she had with her what position my baby was in and she asked what the last scan showed and I said, well it was the 20 wk one so I guess transverse but it was a while ago and she seemed surprised I didn't know.
I'm sure I'm worrying unnecessarily but wondering if on the days baby is moving less (it kind of varies but generally he is active) I should be hot-footing it straight to hospital for a scan?

i had three with previous pregnancy - 12 weeks, 20 weeks and 36 weeks which was because I had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks.

This pregnancy I have had 3 so far and am not expecting any more hopefully. I had one at 12 weeks, 20 weeks and then at 22 weeks purely because baby wouldn't get in the right position at 20 weeks.

I thought most people only had 2? I find them stressful myself and am very happy to have a low risk pregnancy where not many are needed!

Alita7 · 18/06/2014 20:11

I'll only have 2 on the Nhs unless they find a reason to do more at my 20 week one tomorrow.

We're probably going to have a 4d one too.

Lottiedoubtie · 18/06/2014 20:12

I've had five, and will have three more...

But I was under the impression that that was pretty unusual? Tbh I wish I'd only had two, it would mean a lot less worry and stress!

Mumof3xox · 18/06/2014 20:14

3 nhs scans with dc1 - 9 weeks (dates wrong) 12 weeks and 20 weeks

2 nhs scans with dc2 - 16 weeks (dates wrong) and 20 weeks

2 nhs scan and a gender scan with dc3 - 12 weeks, 20 weeks and 22 weeks

Lozmatoz · 18/06/2014 20:14

It's normal to just have the 2. I guess you (and I) have to count ourselves lucky that there's no reason to have extra scans.

The first is purely to check there's actually a baby there, there's a heart beat and to date it. The second to check for anomalies.

If you'd really like another you could always pay for a private 3D scan?

mssleepyhead · 18/06/2014 20:16

I'm 30 weeks and had one at 7 weeks at the EPU, then one at 12 weeks after spotting, then one at 13 weeks (the NHS one), then an 18 week gender scan and the 20 week one. So lots early! But then wasn't planning anything later on, until I realised how LONG the last 20 weeks are! So must admit I've booked a private one to have on Saturday so check everything's still ok...

I don't think they would scan you for movements. I think they'd just put you on a machine and monitor the heartbeat. But if baby seems big/small you might get a growth scan?

20-40 weeks seems forever!

iwantittobepink · 18/06/2014 20:16

I've had 2 at 12 and 20 weeks, but will have 2 more at 30 and 34 weeks, but this is only because I have high bmi and whilst they can't find any problems and have put me as low risk my consultant said as a precaution I should have growth scans in case my tummy fat is blocking the growth of baby when the midwifes measure my tummy.

I got told by the midwife I'm lucky coz otherwise I have no markers and they wouldn't scan me again so I think its normal what you've had :)

TakingTheStairs · 18/06/2014 20:17

I had about 16/17
One a week from wk 7 to 12,
One a month from months 4 to 7, then 2 a month for month 7 & 8, and a couple extra so I could see how DS was growing. But I'm aware this isn't normal.

GingerRodgers · 18/06/2014 20:19

With dd I had 4 but that was because they suspected problems at the 20 week scan and one of those scans was to check baby for markers and to perform an amnio so I wish I hadn't had to have it!
This time I've had 2 NHS scans and there's a chance of a quick 3rd if baby is still breech at 36 weeks. Again, only because there could be a 'problem'.

tak1ngchances · 18/06/2014 20:22

6 weeks
9 weeks
12 weeks
15 weeks
20 weeks
24 weeks

So 6 so far but that's because we did IVF and I had ovarian hyperstimulation.

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 18/06/2014 20:30

Also, if you have reduced movement they don't automatically scan you. Often they will just link you to the monitor for a longer trace at this sort of stage.

mrsnec · 18/06/2014 20:32

So far 15 weeks and 20 weeks, then private scan at 22 on doctors orders (4d even though I didn't ask for one!) then another one booked in for 26 weeks but no idea why. Not in uk.

RAFWife12 · 18/06/2014 20:39

I had one at 8 weeks due to bleeding. Then 12 and 20 weeks.
I've been into the maternity unit twice since - once due to a fall onto my stomach, then with pre-eclampsia symptoms. Both times they put me onto a monitor to check babies heart rate and movements and to ensure no contractions. Not been scanned.
They can tell position pretty accurately through feeling I believe. Though I can't work out what all the bumpy bits are - but then I'm not a midwife!

arghhelpme · 18/06/2014 20:49

Ds1 had early scan about 7 weeks, 12, 20 then one at 37 weeks to check fluid levels.

Ds2 early scan at 5 weeks, repeat at 6 or 7 then 13 and 20 weeks.

This pregnancy had dating scan at 13 weeks, a&e sent me for an emergency scan at 15 weeks. Will have my 20 week scan next week then will be scanned every 4 weeks as it is twins.

Eastwiththem · 18/06/2014 20:49

3 so far...

8 weeks due to previous m/cs
12 weeks as normal
20 weeks as normal

Not expecting to see the baby again until the birth unless something crops up and the midwife/doctor tells me I need to get another scan.

ohthegoats · 18/06/2014 20:51

10 week viability for Harmony test
12 week nuchal
20 week anomaly
23 week Doppler
Booked for another at 28 weeks due to single umbilical artery potentially causing slow growth later on in the pregnancy. So far no sign of this though. If slows down, then another at 32, if not, then maybe nothing else.

Boogles91 · 18/06/2014 20:51

We had 9wks, 14wks, 20wks, 28wks, 32wks, 34wks and 35wks :) im high risk hence why so many. Hopefully nottoo long to go now i find out our induction date next week! I wouldnt worry, although its great as you get tp see baby loads but it can be a bit stressfull having to goto the hospital all the time inbetween other appointments. Normally you get extra scans if there is a problem(not nessesarily with the baby) so i really wouldnt worry :) x

SouthDerbyshireMamma · 18/06/2014 20:54

I've had three, only because when I went for the dating scan we were a little early. I have been admitted to hospital twice with reduced movement and a bleed and wasn't offered another scan. They have other things to monitor my complaints rather than having to rely on a further scan.

Taura · 18/06/2014 21:43

I've had 1 so far (13 weeks) - due the Anomaly scan at 20, then 28 and 32 weeks growth scans because of Advanced Maternal Age (I'll be 41). Otherwise it would just be the first 2 on the NHS.

Redling · 18/06/2014 23:09

I had a scan at 25 weeks as midwife couldn't find a heartbeat, but it was a blink and you'd miss it 'look there he is, heart beating, all fine' 2 minute job, not like the 12 and 20 weeks. I'm not fussed if I don't have another. I'd rather not have had the 25 week one, no scans means no issues!

Boudica1990 · 18/06/2014 23:23

Oh gosh mine are

6weeks (dating scan unplanned pregnancy irregular periods, just came off pill)
12 weeks NHS
15 weeks private gender
20 anomaly scn NHS
20 repeat anomaly scan NHS
24 emergency scan, pre term labor
28 growth scan NHS
31 growth scan NHS
31 emergency scan reduced movement.

I will have another at 36. Hopefully no emergency ones again!!

Mummytobeforthefirsttime · 19/06/2014 01:47

Gosh I've had a load for this baby, due to my history of recurrent miscarriages

Scans at
6 weeks
8 weeks
10 weeks
Normal 12 week scan
14 weeks for CVS
Anomaly scan at 20 weeks
Growth scan at 28 weeks
Growth scan at 34 weeks

I don't think I'll have any more!

Allshallbewell · 19/06/2014 02:17

With DC 1 and 2, I had the usual 12 week and 20 week scans on the NHS. Then with DC2, I had to have an emergency scan whilst in labour when it was discovered that she was breech.
With DC3, I had masses of scans. The first half of my pregnancy was not in the UK, and I was scanned at 8,12,16 and 20 weeks. Then when I returned home, had another 3 scans on the NHS although to this day, I still have no idea why (low risk pregnancy throughout). What was hardest about DC3's extra scans was that my DH couldn't be present for most of them. We had agreed not to find out the sex and at each scan I found myself desperately wanting to find out! Managed to contain my curiosity in the end and was worth it for the surprise at the end (first DS after 2 DD's)

sermilady · 19/06/2014 02:32

With dd I only had the 2 (12 weeks and 18 weeks). It did feel like a long time after 18 weeks to the end, but it just meant that there were no concerns. With ds I had 4 (12 weeks, 16 weeks due to bleeding - low lying placenta, 20 weeks and 32 weeks to check on position of placenta/growth scan). Btw the growth estimate was very out - they estimated I would have a 4kg/9lb baby, but he was only 3.37kg/7lb7oz!

MrsMonkeyBear · 19/06/2014 02:37

I'm due to have extra growth scans at 28 and 32 weeks, low pre pregnancy bmi. Also may need another at 36 weeks as I have an anterior placenta Previa and it depends on if it's moved. So that will be 5 in total that I am aware of.
