I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thanks Everyone - nothing to worry about, as I suspected, though DD had fainted at work experience from violent stomach pangs, only a virus.Very sweet of you all to sympathise when ill yourselves or recovering.
Back soon. Sasseh I am glad you are actually starting to enjoy pregnancy.

flipping heck, lottie that's a great appraisal considering the circumstances. How on earth do you keep going with such difficult pupils and HG?

hey starry :) im up and down but the baby is delightful. I find that while it's going to take me a while to recover, getting enough sleep really really helps. ONce husband's gone to work, I go back to bed with the Pipsqueak and we doze. Makes a big difference. Just hoping that time heals the rawness from the preg.

Meerka · 19/06/2014 21:25

and sassah lovely to hear that things are improving so much =) please do pop back when your little one is born!

lucinda glad your daughter is ok, pretty scary to be fainting from stomach pains :( hope she's getting better

Lottiedoubtie · 19/06/2014 22:49

meerka my school is generally very good and supportive, those year tens are a bit of a rogue group! Also because of the time of year my timetable is much much lighter than usual, as I teach mainly exam classes. So I've only got 4 classes in school and a colleague is taking some of them for me, which only equates to 9 lessons a week for me to teach. Also because of time off for the scan tomorrow and sports day Monday I don't have any lessons between now and Tuesday Grin

Oklahoma · 20/06/2014 08:39

Lottie I'm still in awe you achieved anything more than a 'surviving'.

My 20 week recovery hasn't materialised and I actually seem to be getting worse again. Guess I'm not going to be one of the lucky ones...

Lottiedoubtie · 20/06/2014 08:42

okla really sorry to hear you're going down again. Is it time for a meds review?

You are closer to the end than the start, keep remembering that

mrsnec · 20/06/2014 08:47

Hi all, just checking in. Sass, I m feeling the same as you although I hope I'm not speaking too soon. Still have a bit of nausea and food aversions but not been sick in a while. Oaklahoma, I think the 20 weeks thing is a bit early. I've only just started feeling better I think it was gradual from 23 weeks starting to get heartburn though before I go to bed which is most unpleasant.

Lucinda, sorry to hear about your daughter.

Well done Lottie.

Hi everyone and sorry if I missed anything.

livingzuid · 20/06/2014 09:27

Hectic here with parents leaving today. okla glad the scan went well, I found it really helped make it more real and the sickness wasn't for no reason! khali good to hear steroids work and sasseh so pleased it has eased off.

worry my baby was in the 90th but I didn't have GD. She's now thriving and growing like a weed. A friend did have GD and it is about managing your diet mainly, and you may get medication but lots don't need it. It's quite common and nothing to worry about :)

livingzuid · 20/06/2014 09:28

Oh and lucinda glad your daughter is OK!

kalidasa · 20/06/2014 09:29

Okla last time my best month was weeks 25 to 30, so you might still get a better patch.

Going downhill here now the steroids are tapering. Can't sit up, and struggling to eat or drink at all. I guess it will be hospital again next week.

BabyButton1 · 20/06/2014 09:56

Hi all just checking in again, keep dropping of when feeling too sick!

Great to see some of us are making progress :-) hope you are all doing ok today.

I thought on Monday I'd reached the near end with HG and was feeling relatively ok but been throwing up not stop again for the last 3 days. I saw my midwife on wed and my new goal is 24 weeks (I'm 17 now). I think they put these dates in your head to give you hope when really it's pot luck isn't it...fingers crossed I'll not be sick so much today, only once so far! Doctor is worried because I didn't take my antibiotics accordingly because I threw them back up more than they stayed down so my test results should be back today to see what's next... Also midwife not happy that I'm still 1 stone under my pre birth weight...yet I'm trying so hard to eat! Anyone else have this problem ?

Hope everyone has an ok day :-)

Oklahoma · 20/06/2014 10:06

Oh Kali I wish there was something we could do to help. It's utterly miserable and just so unfair!

Button I've put on no weight and some docs seem concerned and some don't seem to care at all. So long as the baby is growing they don't seem too bothered though. When is your next scan?

kalidasa · 20/06/2014 10:16

button like okla I found that they are only really concerned about the baby's growth! They might refer you for extra growth scans, but if the baby is growing that seems to satisfy them. I remember putting on no weight for a month near the end last time and being worried, but the baby put on loads in that time so presumably I was actually losing it! Last time I never stopped throwing up and even so DS was dead on his ideal weight/size every single time they measured him.

BabyButton1 · 20/06/2014 10:41

Okla & kali thanks that's really reassuring :-) the midwife felt my tummy and said that the baby seemed to have risen well which suggests baby is growing ok. I have a scan on 14th July...seems like time is dragging.

Kali - did you find your appetite and sickness etc. improved quickly after birth? Also, I'm assuming you didn't have much weight to lose after birth then.

I may as well have served my breakfast in the toilet, sickness not looking good today.

LucindaE · 20/06/2014 11:22

Kalidasa Oh no, you poor thing. Do they have to taper off the steroids so much? For you to start feeling very bad again so soon is just so dismal for you. I hope this is the worst stage. I remember last time there was a dreadful time when you were in hospital again and again.
Thanks everyone for kind thoughts. My 'mother's instinct' said it wasn't anything too bad,but OH was in a tizzy. Oklahoma Really sorry you are going downhill and I hope as mrsnec says in her encouragement it will be just a bit later but that improvement comes.
Great news mrsnec and Sasseh.
Livingzuid Excellent advice for Iworry. Thanks and hugs to you, Meerka Lottie and others for being so lovely as ever.
Lottie My goodness, you must be superwoman. And one of your pupils stormed out and you still got 'good with outstanding' features? I know what sort of teacher I would have made - 'bad with outstandingly bad features'. I remember having to shout myself hoarse to maintain order at union meetings, and that was with so called adults...How do you feel now? How many hours are you working? Good luck with scan, but I'm sure it'll be fine, as others say.
Starry How are things today?
BabybuttonReally sorry for relapse. I hope the good period is a very hopeful sign of much more to come as it often is, though it's so discouraging to go through a bad time again afterwards.
Sorry if rudely overlooked anyone.
xx

Grin fortunately my observer has had the pleasure of teaching the young man in question herself and she was just amazed that he a) came back in and b) then participated in the rest of the lesson. I got brownie points for 'the way' I bollocked him at the end of the lesson too! I was exhausted last night but fortunately was able to have a lie in this morning. Feeling sick now, but I think that's got more to do with scan nerves than anything else. Meant to be writing UCAS references now, but it's just not happening!

PunkStar · 20/06/2014 12:32

Kali
Lucinda has just updated me about your terrible situation :-(

I started steroids at eight weeks, I'd lost 5kg in 8 days.
I started on 30mg with strict written instructions to continue this dose for two weeks followed by 5mg reduction every five days. If any decline the dose was to be upped again by 5mg. The aim was to get down to 15mg which Prof T found was most peoples maintenance dose (he said this did vary between 25-7.5mg though depending on person)
Most stay on this until around 18-20 weeks and then reduce unless they have full term hyperemesis.....

I needed dose upping to 45mg (15mg tds) this allowed me to eat enough to gain weight.

I managed to get down to 20mg by 20 weeks, I struggled to go lower for some time but with 2.5mg reductions I got down to 7.5mg by 27 weeks and continued this until term. I tried twice to come off completely and became quite I'll again within 48 hours. I was given strict instructions not to stop again until after delivery.

I can PM you consultants email address if needed. Perhaps your consultant could ask him for advice?

I am so sorry you are going through this. I find it very difficult to even think about the first tri and everyone is banned from talking about it with me :-(

mrsnec · 20/06/2014 12:55

Thanks everyone. Kali that is exactly the stage I'm at now so your previous experience makes sense. I have to say though I'm not being complacent or negative but I do feel it could all go down hill again! At least I'll be prepared for it and the end will be in sight.

I'm also sorry to hear about your situation this time kali, great advice from punk.

starrynight123 · 20/06/2014 14:41

meerka so glad you are enjoying your little one and getting enough sleep despite the ups and downs. Completely agree about how important it is to get enough sleep. Sounds like such an obvious thing, but so easy to overlook! Even with the hg, if I'm tired, the nausea/sickness creep up and I feel more unhappy too.

Lucinda I'm good, thanks for asking! Was SO hungry this lunchtime and stuffed myself with salad, rice and cereal plus loads of soda water Grin Now feeling really sleepy and may gently doze for a while. Ah, the joys of being at home!

kali I REALLY hope your consultant can get in touch with punk's so you can at least stay on the steroids and eat.

okla that magical 20wk passed me right by too. It wasn't until c.28wks that I saw any improvement.

kalidasa · 20/06/2014 14:53

Punk if you could pm me that would be great, I am on app and can't message you by tapping on your name.

Still eating tiny bits but I recognise the slide. We are anticipating going back in on Monday morning. I can't change the dose without seeing a consultant, which will never happen at the weekend.

BabyButton1 · 20/06/2014 16:39

Kali hope you get that sorted!! Sounds awful...

Thank everyone for your lovely messages. Just been signed of work for 3 more weeks which means that if I do get back to work it will be for 1 week before we break up for summer holidays eek. Feel so bad! Doctor has upped my dose of ondansatron again to see if that helps.

Does anyone find that trying to eat is like retraining your brain...I look at all food and I want to cry I resent in that much...and I just hate the taste of everything :-( my partner finds it so hard to understand because there's absolutely nothing I want to taste.

Fraggle31 · 20/06/2014 17:36

Afternoon everyone :)

kali'so sorry to hear things are not going well! sounds like punk has some great advice for you.

baby glad you're off for abit longer :) I feel the same about food, however I did have a subway at the hospital today and omg it was heaven! Devoured is not the word, but pretty much everything else yes lol

Had nuchal today and pleased to say everything is good and as it should be. Sonographer could have had a little bit more of bedside manner but hey! Managed to walk to/from hosp rather than getting the bus as feeling still so travel sick. Which is the most I've done for 5 weeks and really suprised me how deconditioned I am - you'd think id have guessed that already being a physio! Managed to eat a whole subway too which was just heavenly! Might have to see if my local do delivery lolol!

Sorry to everyone I've missed, hugs and gentle pats to those who need them xx

PunkStar · 20/06/2014 19:23

Kali have PM'd you...hope it has worked. I couldn't click on your name either.

Lottiedoubtie · 20/06/2014 22:39

Hi everyone,

kali I'm so sorry the slide continues, it seems so cruel for them to insist you ween of the steroids so quickly. Hang in there.

fraggle glad your scan went well Grin it must be the day for it as mine was also very positive, baby still growing consistently and sonographer very happy with the graph. AND finally the baby was laying legs akimbo so we could see quite clearly that we are having a boy Grin

LucindaE · 21/06/2014 08:26

Punkstar Thanks so much for coming on with great advice for Kali.
Kali I hope your consultant gets in touch with Punkstar's Prof.
How are you today?
Babybtton and Lottie Happy news about scans. Babybutton Good news too about being off work until near the end of term, just what you need. Lottie I hope this draining teaching is only part time as the moment?
Starry Good about that huge lunch - rice, that isn't something you would risk when feeling dodgy, horrific on the way up.
mrsnec George Fraggle Oklahoma mrsb87 and Everyone how are things - very hot here in Wales.

Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.
xx
