I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

savoury biscuits with bits cheese

crème caramel desserts

crusty bread toasted

I struggle with vanilla ice cream - it tastes very chemical to me now
Love vienetta though

breadsticks and chive dip
cottage cheese
baked potato
beans & sausages in a tin

smoothies
melon
cucumber sticks
ice pops
toast
random stuff that crazily takes your fancy - go with it ie tartare sauce
yogurt & bit of cereal thrown in
crisps
chips, frozen cooked stuff ie shicken nuggets
sandwiches? ham and mustard
tomatoes dipped in salt
celery with peanut butter squidged in and raisins dotted down = ants on a log
dairylea on ryvita
crackers with butter

I could not eat grapes - still can't
pizza makes me feel ill - too rich

I like Love green olives

ChaffinchOfDoom · 27/02/2014 10:19

bananas are still dead to me, the evil heartburn little b*stards

however if you can manage banana - thin slices on yogurt/greek yog or with cereal, or slathered in maple syrup
then great - bananas full of potassium, great for pukers.

kalidasa · 27/02/2014 10:19

meerka and booboo I also got worse again in the last couple of months. I did have about four weeks around, I think, month 6-7 where I was still shattered and severely nauseous 24/7 but didn't actually throw up. Then the vomiting started again. Close to the very end I was worried I was going to lose control and end up back in hospital but I never actually did so although it was miserable the end stage was never as bad as the beginning (though I was very disabled by SPD by then too which didn't help - can't really rush to the loo on crutches!). In those final months I was still on cyclizine and just took the ondansetron occasionally if I was worried about losing control (e.g. if I threw up twice close together). I was on ranitidine the whole way through too - I'm not sure it did much at the beginning but it definitely did help with the bad heartburn in the last months.

on a HG website I found 5 yrs ago when I had it 1st time round there were different smoothie recipes,

make ice cold and sip through straw - chuck in whatever you fancy
carrot in smoothies is nice, grate it up first
strawbs ... will have a google in a min

kalidasa · 27/02/2014 10:22

Interesting about how many of us conceived very quickly and have a history of early mcs. The mc thing I have actually seen noted somewhere official, don't think I've ever seen a comment on a correlation to fertility. I suppose if there is a common factor in terms of either producing more hormones than usual or being more sensitive to them than usual this might make sense, since obviously various hormones are responsible for e.g. ovulation and for making sure that the womb lining is hospitable for implantation etc. I did have an unusually high level of HCG at the triple test thing at the same time as the 12 week scan.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 27/02/2014 10:22

Moroccan hummous on toast

ChaffinchOfDoom · 27/02/2014 10:28

weird pdf here with an ideal diet outlined for HG

Meerka · 27/02/2014 10:29

yeah, tastes change as quick as the breeze don't they?

mrsb87 · 27/02/2014 10:32

Thanks for the list chaffich that's really helpful. I get stuck on what to try because a few things have gone so horrifically wrong!
Bananas have been good for me, also peeled quartered apples have been nice to nibble at. Will second the sandwiches too, had a ham and egg sandwich the other day which went down surprisingly well.
Buttery crumpets! Not sure if you international girls can get those?

LucindaE · 27/02/2014 10:33

Punkstar Sorry, I'm in a silly mood today and I can't resist this - a health visitor used to refer to my bladder as 'Your Water Works* and your comment 'Sparkling water works for me' sums up the most fascinating picture!
Waves to all sheepishly after silliest joke.

Eat small amounts of food frequently, instead of trying to eat three large meals
Try small portions of the following foods:
Bagels
Baked or mashed potatoes
Bananas
Bread
Crackers
Melba toast
Unsalted pretzels
Gingersnaps
Vanilla wafers
Rice cakes
Cream of wheat
Oatmeal
Dry cereals
Pears
Plain pastalain rice
If you have not vomited for 2?3 days, see if you can tolerate the following foods:
Baked skinless chicken
Baked fish
Lean meats
Eggs
Fruit cocktail
Jell-O®
Low-fat and mildly flavored cheeses and cottage cheese
Sherbet
Ice pops
Italian ice
Soups
Yogurt
Low-fat puddings
Nuts
Add salt to food (if needed), but avoid adding fat, which sometimes worsens symptoms
Avoid fatty foods, such as:
Pastries
Gravy
Whole milk products
Processed meats
Do not eat and drink at the same time, instead drink your fluids between your meals and snacks
Do not drink more than 1 cup of fluid at a time
Try drinking pure (100%) fruit juice or lemonade, which may help to relieve nausea
Eat slowly and thoroughly chew all foods
Do not lie down for at least 2 hours after eating
Avoid strongly spiced or highly aromatic foods
See if you tolerate cold foods better than hot foods
Talk to your doctor about taking a ginger supplement—some people have reported relief with taking 250 milligrams of ginger daily
Note: Always talk to your physician before initiating any supplements or medications
Consider eating a small snack before bed—this may reduce morning nausea
Know that strongly flavored vegetables may worsen symptoms, including:
Cabbage
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Garlic
Onions

Hi bug sorry you are here. Museli is blergh!!! So funny how it's so different for everyone Grin.

For me, ice cold water, like almost frozen is amazing. Always drink through a straw. Also Nutella on toast is a staple of my diet nothing else works. And tomato, mozzarella and balsamic vinegar randomly. Lots of chicken breast is good. I have the odd steak. Potato was awful for ages but enjoying jackets now. And cheesy crisps, oh so many cheesy crisps. Chocolate and anything sweet is a no which sucks as it tastes great at the time then I have a vile taste for hours after. Also Ham and cheese sarnies are yum. And salami I try to not eat too much but is fine to do so here and Lidi have this amazing low fat stuff. Anything + salt really. Oh and lemons and lime in hot water either or. Yum. Helps freshen the mouth taste as well. And lots of milk.

I was so sick yesterday evening. I think I have overdone it recently and just lay in bed trying to sleep and feeling so sick. I cleaned the house and then we went to in laws for the evening. By the time we got home I was so fooked. Slept all morning today and now feel a bit better.

I had tonic water for the first time yesterday which was amazing! I could almost pretend there was a gin in there. But how much can you have? Is there a limit because of the quinine?

On the fertility thing no migranes for years until pg and I've had 3 so far in second trimester. Odd bout of cystitis once every few years. Terrible thrush until I stopped mushrooms! But we took 2 years to get pg with one mc last Feb in between. My thyroid and bipolar had a huge amount to do with that what with the hormonal imbalance and the cortisol from the stress and depression I was in so I'm a bit different. As soon as both were treated properly along came this bfp! I also switched to gluten free which hasn't been possible to maintain in pregnancy but am a big believer in diet impacting health - thrush problems literally stopped overnight, for example. But right now I just eat what stays down and enjoy it whilst it lasts Grin

livingzuid · 27/02/2014 10:35

Oh and nice pink lady apples. Yum yum.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 27/02/2014 10:36

you can actually eat jelly straight from the pack.. good source energy we were told to do it on Duke of Edinburgh walks
also ...Kendal mint cake!!

livingzuid · 27/02/2014 10:37

Ooh we have an m&s near us where I get crumpets from. Amazing!

ChaffinchOfDoom · 27/02/2014 10:38

living
I looked at the tonic water thing as it's the only liquid I can drink fast in large amounts - ie a pint glass
I have about a pint of it every other night, probably, ice cold and fizzy mmm
different sites say it is fine as long as you don't drink, like 6 bottles in a day
some MW advise drinking it as it can help with cramp

livingzuid · 27/02/2014 10:41

I keep cross posting sorry and yes to the changing tastes. Worst was when it was McDonald's one week and then KFC the next. Now thank god I'm not interested in either! But so funny how it just is such a weathervane.

livingzuid · 27/02/2014 10:45

Right going to get up and have a tonic water with ice and lemon. That sounds fabulous!

Aaaaand finally on the food thing I find I really can't eat much in the morning aside from my Nutella on toast and a hot milk. Then from about 2-6 I'm so bloody hungry no matter what I eat but then the taste afterwards is not fab. chaffinch is so correct on the little but lots, especially as th baby grows and your stomach moves up. Acid becomes a real problem.

kalidasa · 27/02/2014 10:49

Great food suggestions from chaffinch. I also had early success with nutella, oddly. And KFC. What is it with KFC?!

I remember there was one week when I wanted milk with chocolate nesquik in it. Makes me feel ill thinking about it now! The week before and after even the thought of milk would make me hurl immediately but that week it was the only thing I could keep down. I remember it clearly because that same week I looked up in the baby book what stage of development we were at and it said "this week the baby is forming bones for the first time"!! I guess that's why I could suddenly stomach the milk . . .

You just have to believe I think that in a weird way your body knows what it's doing, at least for the baby, if not for you. I was deficient in absolutely everything, they were forever telling me to supplement this or that (none of which I could keep down so it was all pointless) but the baby was absolutely fine and a completely average size. He just took it all from me.

Meerka · 27/02/2014 11:00

I live on tonic water too, tbh by now I carefully avoided looking at whether or not I should drink it ....

living oh, you lucky thing .. crumpets! an M&S!

mrsb87 · 27/02/2014 11:24

You will have to get your OH to make you some meerka!

Kalidasa my kfc went down very well last night, it definitely satisfied my craving. Milk seems to be ok for me too, although with my super sniffer dog nose I can tell if its on it's way out from a mile off!

livingzuid · 27/02/2014 11:25

Yep there's a new big one in The Hague which was apparently inundated when it first opened. Also nearer to me is a little one in a petrol station between Rotterdam and The Hague which is closer just off the motorway only 20 mins drive. Patiently waiting for one in Rotterdam as well Grin but we have a Boots and Primark!

The smaller marksies are mainly in selected BPs around the country - take a look and see if there is one near you. They are slowly expanding it across the country I think.

Chocolate nesquick??? Genius! Going to ask dh to bring some home!

kalidasa · 27/02/2014 11:27

The funny thing was the chocolate nesquik craving recurred a few times, and when I looked at the ingredients it is actually fortified with basically ALL the vitamins, minerals and iron (I suppose like breakfast cereals - designed for fussy toddlers who won't consume anything else). So it was actually quite a sensible craving I think!

DiddyBeth · 27/02/2014 11:53

Hi :) Hope you are all having a vom-free day. This thread has been great to read over the past few days, finally got the energy to post.

MOAN ALERT Went back to work on Tuesday as i was feeling more energetic and hadn't been sick for around 5 days so was feeling quite optimistic. First day was fine, the food smell sucked but didnt make me sick and i was exhausted afterwards but i stuck through a whole shift (a new personal best for me) but I had agreed with my boss that I would drop my hours to 3 days so I could have a days rest in between but was then told I was in the next day.
Not impressed, they finally did my risk assessment (I am 25 weeks, told them I was pregnant at 5 weeks due to time off from sickness) which was a waste of time as they contradicted everything they had promised when I spoke to them about returning. I cant afford to go back on sick pay and have another month before I can take maternity leave. Feeling really down and rather sorry for myself right now :( I have had an easier time of it than some of you poor ladies and am trying to stay positive but it is so difficult right now. Feel a little better just from venting so thanks Grin

I have managed to keep myself out of hospital thanks to chocolate nesquik many times. It was the only drink I could keep down for about 2 weeks, think it also was great for stopping that horrible heartburn vomiting that kept happening.

LucindaE · 27/02/2014 12:00

DiddyBeth Oh no, you work with food, of course, and it's hard enough to work with this- travel and everything, exhaustion, fear of being sick - poor you. It dosn't sound as if they were being helpful at all. Did you say that you can't survive on sick pay at all, as it seems asking a lot of yourself to go back to this?

Waves to Everyone greatly impressed with diet stories.
