Can I ask how much your pram/pushchair etc cost?

Sorry if it's inappropriate Grin But DH is doing my head in!!!

This purchase is the one thing we can't reach a decision on!! I've seen a gorgeous set I like, starts off as a pram, transforms to pushchair when needed (front and rear facing as per choice) and also comes with separate car seat, rain covers and travel bag. It is £280 and DH says there is NO way we are spending that much money on a pram Hmm I actually thought it was pretty good value for all that is included (and it's gorgeous)!!

Is he being stingy or am I being delusional? Smile

Hello,

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the products mentioned on this thread aren't available any more. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing prams and pushchairs, from lightweight easy folding prams to all terrain buggies, we've seen them all. Here's our round up of the best baby pushchairs on the market right now.

Hope that helps! Flowers

I was talking to my husband about it again last night and we are considering delaying the purchase because of how complicated and stressful it is Grin

He's really keen to get a sling. I won't use it myself (health reasons) but he said he's happy to have the baby strapped to him if we ever go out and would really like it.

Has anyone else just not had a pram/pushcahir for the first month or so of life??

Even if he is happy to carry child, he cannot do that in car so will need a car seat. Also it's not just the baby that needs carrying it's all the baby stuff as well.
The set you saw was very reasonable IMO, you could possibly go and search for same model second hand on ebay/gumtree but you would still have to fork out for a new carseat (you shouldn't buy second hand as you don't know if it has been in an accident).
When picking a pram/pushchair out, I would recommend seeing them in a shop first as you can then judge how easy they are to maneuvre, how heavy it is, how easy it is to fold down, .... You cannot judge this from ebay alone.

We know we will still need a car seat, lol Grin
You are definitely right about the need to see the product in the shop first and not just buy from eBay and hope for the best. Some of the ones my DH have been looking at are in Germany! I asked him what we would do about sending it back if it arrives and we aren't happy with it.....he just shrugged his shoulders. Very helpful Grin

I want the pushchair fairy to visit us overnight and just leave one on our doorstep for us Grin

I also think most pushchair/travel systems look ugly and unattractive and that instantly puts me off them even if they are really practical.

We got the silver cross wayfarer (it was the only thing we bought as new for the baby!!). It's a travel system with carry cot and car seat and cost £600.

A sling is a nice thing to own but in my view it is an extra especially if you can't use it.

IMO you will go spare in the house with a newborn if you can't go for a walk around the block for a bit of fresh air.

You could list your requirements on the pushchair board on here for some advice.

Is there a Kiddicare near you? I got my first pram from John Lewis and they gave me good advice but I was blown away by the selection and knowledgeable staff at Kiddicare when I got my tandem at Christmas.

I'd take a trip there and have a good browse and see what staff advise and then think about whether you want new or second hand depending on what you will save.

About £700+ on an Uppababy Vista I think this time, although first time round for practicality reasons (different house and location) we just had a Jane pushchair that folded flat, costing about £150. It was ok but had to keep stopping and checking baby, and we had 2 as both broke, baby slipped down in straps, wasn't comfortable etc. Also wheels kept locking and a nightmare to push.

Have pushed friend's prams which were cheap and they are horrible to 'drive'. The Uppababy pushes like a dream.

DS was mostly in a sling for the first year. At 3m we moved somewhere where pavements just randomly appeared and disappeared and up a mountain. A sling was far more practical.

Better to spend what you can afford
If you can go more than £180 definetely go and see the different models , the "push" quality between cheaper and dearer is quite noticeable .
We had Quinny travel system then Babyjogger single then double both excellent
When we took a cheaper buggy on holiday we definetely noticed the difference going up kerbs and a lot bumpier for baby too
We have bought new and second hand and both were fine
We found EBay great

WeeTeaJenny · 20/01/2014 16:48

Forgot to put cost !
Second hand quinny frame £89 - EBay
Brand new Quinny carry cot -£69 -eBay shop
Brand New Babyjogger £239 -local pram shop
Brand New Babyjogger Double - £356 - John Lewis online

Sounds a good deal to me - I think we are going to go for a Graco Evo Mini which is cheaper (£180 inc. rain cover) BUT doesn't include a car seat (we are getting one from a friend), or a footmuff, and doesn't parent face (I am hoping to use a sling a lot when she is small for short trips, so she will probably mainly be in the pushchair on buses/trains/in cafes where I can face her anyway!). My main consideration was width/weight/foldability rather than price, because I use public transport a lot, have a dodgy back, and our hallway is very narrow - otherwise I might well have been tempted by a system (and if I had been yours sounds like a bargain!)

Did think about second hand, but we are getting a lot second hand from friends, and none of them had a usable buggy as they all said they get a LOT of use so they are not in a very good state once they have been through two or three kids from one family already! So if you do go that route it's good to try to check if you can find one that hasn't had too much wear and tear - I don't think they last for ever.

I have some sympathy for your DP though, as I was in total shock when I first saw how much these things cost!!! I don't think it's obvious to a first timer that they will be so expensive.
