Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Same here Peanut. Dark wee, not going much but skin ok.

ChocChaffinch · 10/09/2013 20:52

at chemist, ketostix are about £4 for a box of 50.

you pee on them and they tell you how many ketones are in your urine

the more, the worse, 4+ is the worst it can get. you need to be admitted to hosp for 3 or higher to be rehydrated.

ChocChaffinch · 10/09/2013 20:55

I got admitted a couple weeks ago, it was bliss to rest and feel like I had liquid in me again. the drugs they gave me were fab, enabled me to eat and savour the delish hosp food - sunday dinner, goulash, steak pie....plus loads stodgey puddings Grin and nothing to do but lounge in bed and wee in pots so they could check my urine repeatedly.
My ketones were 3+ was in for 3 days had 5 bags of drips.

in my last pg, also HG I was 4+ at 9 weeks, was in for 4 days. again, bliss to rest up; and the added benefit of people realising DUH THIS ISNT NORMAL MS

Peanut, when you don't eat and your body is burning reserve fat rather than food in your stomach, you produce ketones in your urine as a by-product. These are not considered to be good in pregnancy, for the baby, and you need food to bring them down. Usually if you have +3 or +4 a maternity hospital will admit you for IV fluids, which can help flush them out and rehydrate you (as generally if you are not eating you are not drinking either) but the only thing that beats the ketones is getting food inside you. I know how hard it is, having been hospitalised 4 times myself. Big hugs.

jenpatnim · 10/09/2013 21:03

I have been having MEGA headaches (prob a combination of work stress, tiredness and some milder dehydration) and thought I would share this with you....

Last night I got one of those sports ice packs out of the freezer, wrapped it in a tea towel and rested it on my forehead for about 20 minutes, lying on the sofa with my eyes closed.

It was BLISS, and I could feel it really lifting the headache, which had been all the way down to my cheekbones and jaw. It was still a wee bit sore after but loads better and I just knew that paracetamol was not going to touch it.

ChocChaffinch · 10/09/2013 21:06

ah Jen. You're having a tough time. Ive started getting neck aches on the left hand side.

ruddy pregnancy! and they say it's not an illness. They can piss right off it's illness from start to ruddy finish.

Has your OH reconsidered Dante? Grin Mine's the opposite. He likes v dull predicatable names.

peanut86 · 10/09/2013 21:09

Thanks everyone, I'll buy some of them tomorrow and keep an eye on it. I couldn't eat or drink a thing yesterday but today I did manage some toast.

ChocChaffinch · 10/09/2013 21:12

If your ketones are high

  1. make an emerg doc appt. If it's weekend/ evening ring 111 and visit out of hours GP, or ring gynae triage direct and tell them ketones 3 or 4 if they are they may invite you straight in.
  2. assume you'd be in hosp for at least 2, possibly more days.
  3. try and stay relaxed, everything will be so much better after rehydrating
jenpatnim · 10/09/2013 21:13

We haven't discussed it in a while, but he still likes it. I guess it won't be a big issue until we know the gender and can really go from there. All the names I like he thinks are too old-fashioned.

ChocChaffinch · 10/09/2013 21:13

unless you're over 16 weeks in which case you can ring maternity triage / MW direct

jenpatnim · 10/09/2013 21:14

Choc I read that as over 16 and was wondering why they wouldn't treat someone younger lol

ChocChaffinch · 10/09/2013 21:16

at work there was a baby girl called Evalina, I liked that. or Evelina
little bit eastern European

I like a few girls names, stuck for boys really.
My 1st 2 DC have names with same initial letter, so big decision to name the 3rd the same letter too?? or go different..... would he/she feel left out...?

ChocChaffinch · 10/09/2013 21:19

how are your bowels Jen? I feel like I don't trust mine anymore Hmm

like they say I need to go but I really don't...or maybe I do.
It's lactulose O clock now anyway I think that stuff is rotting my damn teeth it's sooooo sweeeeeeeeet

peanut86 · 10/09/2013 21:20

I'm 17 weeks. I wish I'd known this earlier, I'm starting to have better days now but there were times I was practically begging someone to help. Thanks for all the info ladies Smile

jenpatnim · 10/09/2013 21:22

Tricky, Choc... I dunno. My bro and I both have J names and we like it.

I like Eva as well, and I saw Amarys recently which was cool. Boys names are the sticking point here - I loved Jeremy but OH nixed it, and eh I dunno. I can see James being a no as it is my brother and father's name, but they both go by Jim. I think James works better with OH's surname than Jim.

My mum is with me on more 'normal' names. Dante sounds spanish, or italian, or american or something, but we are Belfast born and bred and I just think it would be weird. We joked about Luka as well but as hilarious as that would be with the surname it also sounds too foreign for me.

Irish names are a no.

jenpatnim · 10/09/2013 21:23

Mine have done a bit here and there - took the lactulose a while ago. It seems to be moving every other day for me. It is pretty gross, the lactulose - I have to chase it with water.

jenpatnim · 10/09/2013 21:24

Peanut I am 17 weeks too!

RNJ3007 · 10/09/2013 21:29

Lucinda - I favoured the sit on loo, upchuck in dedicated bucket...

I'm still not quite 100% trusting of food yet - not tried anything 'scary' yet.

As for those having name fun - we hadn't decided at all, then 3 weeks before Luke was born, my grandmother who died days later suggested Luke as a name, so we used it as a nod to her.

I finally look more like me, my hair looks like hair not straw and my skin is no longer scaly and peeling!

One suggestion for those suffering in the UK - Welchs white grape and peach juice, frozen into cubes - reading back on my journal and they have several mentions.

ChocChaffinch · 10/09/2013 21:34

I love the name Luke

peanut86 · 10/09/2013 21:39

Just another 23 to go jen! Oh dear, that didn't sound as optimistic as I hoped it would Wink

jenpatnim · 11/09/2013 07:45

Haha peanut, we'll get there!

Sally8655 · 11/09/2013 11:41

Just managed one of mums home made banana and chocolate scones, still warm with a little butter. I actually really enjoyed it.
Maybe things are looking up!
Was up early today as workmen have started painting outside the house. So tired now, nap time I think.
Any suggestions for safe dinner time food would be great. I'm running out of things I can eat in the evenings now. Evenings are definitely the worst time. Still managing no meds for now, although its a struggle.

MurderOfGoths · 11/09/2013 11:57

That sounds delicious!

I'm home alone today, was meant to be going out with DH and DS, but my body had other ideas (I even shaved my beard off!) :(

peanut86 · 11/09/2013 12:21

Mm love banana and chocolate!

I'm having a bit of a struggle today, feeling very sick but managing to at least get some little things done, don't have a choice really! OH is off work tomorrow and wants us to go out for food, umm... Hmm

Oh! I did a poop!

ChocChaffinch · 11/09/2013 12:38

huzzah for poo! me too Grin

no idea what to have for lunch but this morn I did have peanut m&ms thanks to the psychological power of this thread
