6-7 weeks pregnant, but foetus can't be found! Ectopic? Or something else?

I posted on here the other day as I was having some brown discharge. I believe that based on the date of my last period I am between 6 and 7 weeks. I haven't had any pain, just a bit of medium/dark brown discharge on my liner every day (which based on everyone's responses seems to be something relatively common).

I was given an ultrasound today but nothing was found. They did an internal and NOTHING was there - no sac, nothing. They said that I have not had nearly enough bleeding to have miscarried (I haven't had red blood or passed any tissue or had any pain). I still have pregnancy symptoms such as tiredness and nausea. They did a test and it was a strong positive (but I know the hormones would still be in my system anyway). I think it's extremely unlikely that I am less pregnant than I think (which would explain why nothing can be seen). My LMP started on 10 July and I had a positive test a week ago.

Surely if the foetus had died there would be an empty sac or something there?! They are worried that my pregnancy is ectopic so they are doing blood tests over the next few days to monitor my hormone levels to see if they're increasing. I am waiting for them to call me with today's blood test results - if they're high then I need to go back to hospital straight away.

I can't believe this is happened to me. Does anyone have any thoughts or any experience of this? I was reluctant to post this on the pregnancy forum as technically I am still pregnant :-( xxx

Hope your blood test brings good news today x

Hi everyone, thank you for all of your continued support and messages - they have really kept me going xxx

UPDATE!!! I went for a scan this morning and they found a sac incredibly easy, both with normal ultrasound and transvaginal. It's perfectly in the womb and exactly where is should be - no ectopic! They measured it to be 5 weeks 1 day! It's too early to see a foetus yet. So, either this is a normal early pregnancy or I should be further along and it's not developing properly. They estimated that based on dates I should be over 8 weeks! Fingers crossed this is just an early one. They said that my hcg level (1585) and my progesterone level (74) from two days ago are really good. I am expecting this morning's blood test result in a few hours - if it has doubled since 2 days ago I really will relax. Still spotting, a week and counting, but the doctor isn't concerned about that as its sparse and brown! xxx

I am really hoping it is an early pregnancy and that you get good news on the blood tests later today. I'm relieved for you that it is not ectopic.

Hope you are feeling a little better now.

ladylashes · 29/08/2013 11:52

monikar yes I do feel a bit better but I will feel truly relieved if I get good news this afternoon! Will update you :-) xxx

You have had such a worrying few days. I am praying for good news this afternoon for you. You said upthread that your cycle can be rather long and so it is possible that you ovulated late, and so the pregnancy is early. I really hope so.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 29/08/2013 12:55

Sooo pleased for you! Smile such a relief!

ladylashes · 29/08/2013 12:59

Thank you both! :-) I'm not out of the woods yet but his morning was a positive step xxx

More good news - my hCG levels have doubled to 3102 in the last two days. I'm very pleased! Fingers crossed this is a normal pregnancy from now on :-) My next scan is next Friday morning. Will update the thread again then. Thanks again for your support everyone who has commented and sent me good wishes xxx

MummyJetsetter · 29/08/2013 22:48

Phew what a relief! It's so weird when your dates aren't what you thought but obviously it's very common! I'm sure this will be the case otherwise they would have seen the sac on the last scan and nothing would have progressed from there! Good luck with the next scan! x

Hi everyone

Just wanted to come on here and update you...
I had a scan this morning and they saw my tiny little foetus and a heartbeat! I've been feeling soooo nauseous for the last few days so I was feeling more optimistic. The early pregnancy unit have discharged me - as far as they are concerned this is a normal 6 week pregnancy.

Again, thank you all for all of the support over the last few weeks. It was such a terrible time with the spotting and the suspected ectopic. It has all worked out though. I hope some other women get comfort from my story that sometimes it works out :-)

Bug hugs xxx

Just seen this and wanted to say congrats such a lovely story. Sounds like the first sonoGrapher needs the sack! I had a very worrying start to my pg- currently feeding a 4 seeker, best of luck!

Christelle2207 · 06/09/2013 14:04

4 weeker!

monikar · 06/09/2013 19:00

I am so happy to hear such good news - what a relief!

Writerwannabe83 · 06/09/2013 20:51

Hi lady

I had my scan 2 days ago to make sure everything was ok due to bleeding I was having and thankfully the little baby was perfectly Fine. It was being all wriggly, arms and legs going everywhere - my husband had tears in his eyes. The last scan we had just showed a blob, but this time it was definite baby!!

I'm having really bad sickness and diarrhoea now though, haven't really kept anything down for 3 days. I thought that because I'd gotten to this stage without any sickness I was going to be one of the lucky ones who never had it Hmm Unfortunately not!

I have got my 12 week scan a week on Monday and I'm so excited because then we can actually start telling people!! Yay!
