Pregnancy

6-7 weeks pregnant, but foetus can't be found! Ectopic? Or something else?

I posted on here the other day as I was having some brown discharge. I believe that based on the date of my last period I am between 6 and 7 weeks. I haven't had any pain, just a bit of medium/dark brown discharge on my liner every day (which based on everyone's responses seems to be something relatively common).

I was given an ultrasound today but nothing was found. They did an internal and NOTHING was there - no sac, nothing. They said that I have not had nearly enough bleeding to have miscarried (I haven't had red blood or passed any tissue or had any pain). I still have pregnancy symptoms such as tiredness and nausea. They did a test and it was a strong positive (but I know the hormones would still be in my system anyway). I think it's extremely unlikely that I am less pregnant than I think (which would explain why nothing can be seen). My LMP started on 10 July and I had a positive test a week ago.

Surely if the foetus had died there would be an empty sac or something there?! They are worried that my pregnancy is ectopic so they are doing blood tests over the next few days to monitor my hormone levels to see if they're increasing. I am waiting for them to call me with today's blood test results - if they're high then I need to go back to hospital straight away.

I can't believe this is happened to me. Does anyone have any thoughts or any experience of this? I was reluctant to post this on the pregnancy forum as technically I am still pregnant :-( xxx

Sorry to hear what you're going through ladylashes. I'm the friend that Daley mentioned earlier who had a suspected ectopic. I was sure that I must be 6 weeks pregnant and was convinced it was all over - on my first scan they found a solid mass on one of my ovaries that they possibly thought was the ectopic. Luckily it turned out to be a cyst, and I was just earlier on than I thought.
Hcg levels are different for everyone - it's not the level that matters so much but whether its doubling correctly IYSWIM. Everyone also has different pregnancies.
Good luck and keep us updated. So sorry as I know how awful the waiting game is :( Flowers xx

I also had free fluid in my pelvic area, and awful pain in one side. I had a lot of symptoms of an ectopic, including low hcg at first but I'm now almost 18 weeks pregnant. The doctor told me to prepare to lose the baby. I don't want to give you false hope but I just wanted to share my experience. Xx

Ladylashes, hope you are feeling ok, it's a horrible limbo time, I hope you get good news. I had a similar experience last year, sadly it was an ectopic pg, but we went on to have DS so it can turn out in the end.

They can usually see a sac in the womb at HCG levels of between 1500-2000. They saw my EP with an hcg level of 1100 in my tube, I had surgery 4 days later. I didn't luckily have much pain but Like fizzyfeet said, if you have any pain, including shoulder tip pain, you must go in immediately.

It is very stressful but you will get through it, hopefully you will have a happy ending. If you get a chance, update us.

Thanks tasmaniandevilchaser really glad you ended up with ds after your ectopic. The hospital was just as surprised as I was that they found nothing. Fingers crossed that due to a huge 'joke' from Mother Nature I am actually only 4.5 weeks along :-) xxx

Hi there - so sorry to hear your news. I had this and sadly it was an ectopic (left Fallopian tube). However, 3.5 years later I have a 2.5 year old and am expecting DD2. There is always hope even if this time the news is heartbreaking //💐

Ladylashes I'm thinking of you. I've had three mc, including a mmc and I found the thinking that goes on in your head while you're waiting to be utterly exhausting and far worse than any of the physical stuff. I found myself wide eyed n terrified plotting every single permutation when I was hovering in limbo.

I really hope this turns out well Flowers and Brew

Hello Lashes,

I had a ectopic last year.

It was a horrible time, I had lots of home pregnancy test showing a faint possitive so went to the Dr who said his showed not preg.
I still felt preg and had missed a period by a week so I bought a clear blue digital one... It said I was pregnant so off I popped back to the Dr.

Anyway blood test after blood test after blood test (each one 2 days apart to see if they doubled) lead to a internal ultra sound.
The scan found a small something in my right tube and as my hormone levels increased yet never doubled they asked if I would take a injection to stop it growing and doing further damage to my tube.
Reluctantly I agreed and about a week later started to bleed for just a few days.
I hope your story has a better out come I just wanted to share a little of what happened to me when I had a ectopic pregnancy, I had no idea what was in store for me and I felt like a zombie for months after. It was a real shock and I cried a hell of a lot, one min I was pregnant the next I was told it would not ever progress and told to end it.
Sorry to depress anyone, just know I'm hear if you want to talk.

Sending my love and support xx

hi ladylashes, I had exactly the same where I went for an early scan as I had some cramps where according to my LMP should have been 5-6 weeks and they could see nothing at all in terms of any signs of the pregnancy so they took blood and it was around what yours is now. It didn't end well I was asked to go in for a scan every week from then on and while the pregnancy progressed, it was very slow. every 7 days it was only about a day or so difference on the scan and eventually when I should have been 11 weeks the baby looked like about 6 weeks gestation and they confirmed that no further progress so unfortunately it was a MMC for me.
i hope yours turns out to be a viable pregnancy! Good luck and have my fingers crossed for you xx

Firstly, my sympathy. I had similar in January. The worry was overwhelming. Once Id found out I was PG, the brown spotting started pretty much immediately. I had hCG tests, the levels were rising oddly at first, then fine. It continued for a couple of weeks then escalated to red blood. I was scanned, there was nothing in my uterus. They told me it was a PG of unknown location, probably ectopic. A scan a week later confirmed a MC and they found signs of a PG on my ovary.
I was very lucky really, this happened to a friend, her ovary ruptured and was removed. Thankfully, I MC and avoided surgery. It was without doubt the shittiest foulest 3 weeks of my life all in.
However, as plenty of others have said, there are lots of reasons, not all bad, and there is still hope.
I have everything crossed for you Lady. xx

So sorry to hear your going through this ladylashes Flowers.

I suffered an ectopic last year but it wasn't detected until I was already 9 weeks as I had a period and didn't even realise I was pregnant until the week before. In my case they could see the pregnancy was in my right tube near my ovary on a scan, it was actually twins so there was probably quite a lot to see though at that point. To reiterate what the previous poster said please go straight to hospital if you have any pain, etc - they say to watch out for pain in your shoulder tip too. In my case I only experienced some abdominal pain that disappeared (was diagnosed as a UTI in hospital but booked in for a scan a few days later) and sporadic bleeding even though I was already bleeding internally. The bleeding I suffered was as it is usually described - it was brown and like prune juice.

I hope all works out well for you and it's just too early to see anything in your tummy. On a positive note for future fertility although my tube was removed I conceived again at Christmas and my baby is due in 2 weeks now. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
