Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Wow Sally that's amazing. It can be a big shock though. I was really quite worried, DP and I had only been together a short time (7 months!) when I got pregnant, and weren't properly living together, I lived in an unsuitable flat etc. But as soon as you have the baby you just know what to do. It's a cliche and hard to believe, but it's true.

After my weekend worries I bought a Doppler and briefly got a heartbeat a couple of times so trying not to worry now.

Hope everyone is feeling as well as you can. I have found a couple of safe foods, so feel less weak.
I'm in my maternity jeans today. So comfy.

Sally8655 · 20/08/2013 10:52

Little m, I ordered a dopler and used it at 9 weeks. Didn't hear it every time but now it's so loud no problem finding. I only use it about once a week out of curiosity I suppose.

This morning I'm so tired and not feeling too great, however yesterday I did go out for the afternoon as it was overcast so a nice day for some fresh air. It was lovely and cool. Loving this new weather! People think I'm crazy :-)

Think I'm gona try missing one of my meds this week, just to see how I go. Would love to come off them soon but the thought is very scary.

At what point did the ladies on round 2 of HG come off the sickness meds first time? I'm curious to know xx

LittleMachine · 20/08/2013 11:11

I took cyclizine until I gave birth last time.

SlinkyB · 20/08/2013 11:48

Hello everyone, sorry I disappeared for ages, I felt guilty as my HG kinda went around the 14 week mark (plus been back at work so much less time to MN!). I'm 18 weeks today, and now just take Cyclizine in the morning as still feel queasy then. I do still feel a bit sick when I get hungry or tired, but nothing like the HG.

Sally how you keeping? Good luck trying to come off the meds.

Lucinda you're a Star keeping this thread going.

Tallyra Congratulations! I've borrowed a friend's doppler but am not very patient so don't always find a heartbeat. Hope you're not toooo sick.

I've been lurking on Waves other thread and read her amazing birth story, so happy her little boy arrived safely, she deserves every happiness Smile

I've got my appt with the consultant tomorrow as 2.6yr old ds was born by emcs. Am hoping they let me have an elcs this time.

LittleMachine sorry you were on Cyclizine til you gavebirth last time, hope you have a better time this pg. I was talking to my midwife a couple of weeks ago about the possibility of staying on Cyclizine til I give birth, as it's also an anti-histamine and helps massively with my peperennial allergic rhinitis (all year round sneezing/runny nose). She said she'd never heard of anyone staying on meds til they gave birth?! I told her I'd read about ladies being on lots of drugs (not just one Cyclizine tablet a day) til they gave birth.

LucindaE · 20/08/2013 13:03

Misty Welcome, if you can't stand water, are ice lollies and flat coke and maybe ice cubes bearable? There was a juice everyone was taking a few weeks back, can't remember which one! Do watch out for dehydration, even without vomiting if you can't get enough liquids it can happen. Mumbles usual suggestion, you may need kesotix if the nausea gets really bad to check up on dehydration, a bad headache and blurred vision and dry mouth are generally sure signs.
Slinky Lovely to hear from you with such happy news! I'll try and get your name right this time Blush. so nice of you to come back to encourage others that it can shift amazingly. The lingering morning sickness is a pest, but compared to the full blown thing...
Tallyra Oh no, that does not sound good [green].
Littlemachine and Sally Those are rather lovely stories, I have heard any number of stories about how specialists are proven wrong about fertility issues, what a laugh you proved that prediction wrong! Littlemachine Great news about heartbeat, that is the main thing.
Jen I'm glad meds are kicking in again.
Tote Give it a try (mother hen says bossily) but don't hesitate to go back to get different meds if it doesn't work properly, there's so many they can try and in combination, too.
Feekerry and Choc how are things? Hyper Oh dear, are you still nauseated?
Apologies if I've overlooked anyone.

Totesamazeballs · 20/08/2013 13:14

Hi,
Sally, my HG went at around 16 weeks last time and I was just left with normal nausea. I remember driving to work in the mornings praying I wasn't going to vom and cause an accident so I must have felt pretty rough still but it wasn't throwing up 5 times a day stuff.

I was tempted by a Doppler but worried it might freak me out if I couldn't find a heartbeat through my own incompetence. I had a few panicked trips to the docs though, including one when my horse butted me in the tummy by mistake. That raised a few eyebrows!

Just googled Maxolon and its banned in the states due to side effects. Wonder if the others are considered safer?

I am definitely finding protein is helping. So far managed a can of tuna for lunch and feeling not too terrible...as in I think I can get out of bed and walk around. Noticed the same yesterday too. Definitely not as bad as with DS so maybe I will escape HG.

Should probably get dressed now...what am I going to do next week when DH goes back to work?!

jenpatnim · 20/08/2013 13:42

I'm 14+4, Totes. Did vomit this morning, which was fun. I'm in Belfast, and I am a teacher, heading back to work next week after the summer holidays.

Tallyra · 20/08/2013 14:21

I've just had a Google for meds, and one that sticks out is metoclopramide - apparently it stimulates gut motility, so may be a good idea to take in combination with ondansetron? Anyone heard anything about this?

SlinkyB · 20/08/2013 14:29

Metocloperamide was one of the first ones I tried too; it sped up my gut too much and gave me diarrhoea, not ideal when you're dehydrated. It worked for my friend though. I was lucky enough not to need Onsansetron.

Totesamazeballs · 20/08/2013 17:23

Metocloperamide is Maxalon but apparently they don't know if or how it affects the foetus and it can cause muscle spasms and twitching which I think is why it's banned in the States.

I am taking progesterone supplements which slows down the passage of food through the gut and can thus make you feel worse. One might cancel out the other!

Got my early scan tomorrow morn so will find out if this is all in a good cause or not.

Jen, you might not have much longer of this then. Lets hope x

ChocChaffinch · 20/08/2013 17:48

I tried cyclizine 1st, did nothing.
2nd I tried maxillon, and was still vomming inbetween meals, albeit it did allow me to eat.
3rd time lucky I'm now on avomine, you just take one at night, Ive vommed about 3/4 times today on it, which is bearable, don't seem to have any appetite though, but can drink.

slogging on. Thanks for all the hyprem ladies. Im sure this thread shows it's more than 1-2% of pg women get it.
lord knows how Im cooking the dcs tea, I keep puking at the smell. Nearly threw up on asda delivery man too when I saw the bread it's my evil nemesis GAH

MurderOfGoths · 20/08/2013 17:53

Metacloperamide made my arms ache, even the phone was too heavy to lift, and gave me panic attacks. Doctors look at me like I'm mad if I tell them I can't have it though.

Anyway.. hi again. Was here for pregnancy one, looks like I'm back for pregnancy two. Started feeling nauseous and just knew I was pregnant. It's a very specific feeling isn't it?

They started me on Stemetil and Cyclizine, but have now moved me on to Ondansetron. Only 8 weeks and already had one overnight stay in hospital.

This is going to be a long pregnancy. The Ondansetron has made some difference, but I still feel nauseous.

ChocChaffinch · 20/08/2013 17:59

ah congratulations murder!
I had hyperem with my 2nd pg, and got it again now. I kind of hoped it wouldn't come back. It's worse in some ways as you know what's coming...

With my 1st pg had normal morning sickness til week 24, with ds I had hyperem until delivery day, wonder what will happen this time.

How many hyperem mums actually have twins?

MurderOfGoths · 20/08/2013 18:12

It is isn't it? Think as well last time I could believe people when they said, "it'll stop soon", now I just want to hit them for saying it.

LucindaE · 20/08/2013 18:36

Just dashing on to welcome MurderofGoths back. As I so often say, anyone who goes for it more than once deserves a medal. I regret not doing so myself, I think if I hadn't had a sleepless child and an OH not great at childcare I would have...
Choc Only one person on this thread has had twins so far as I know, if that is a clue - MrsDaiksu (I think that is the spelling) about two threads back. She had it badly for the first tri but then it vanished.
Someone mentioned cyber informationon about meds - I don't think you
can beat MOH's website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/treatments/obtaining-treatment

LucindaE It wasn't exactly a conscious decision! Spent the day after POAS shaking with fear.

LittleMachine · 20/08/2013 19:09

Hi MurderofGoths. Sorry you're feeling shitty Thanks

jenpatnim · 20/08/2013 23:50

Hey all - lots of new faces!

I have had a terrible day, spent the day in bed, been sick a couple of times. I have spent all day feeling like I am going to be sick any second.

I am also feeling really sorry for myself today, have cried a bit as I feel so wretched. Really don't know how I am going to cope if this lasts the whole pregnancy.

As a side note - I read a suggestion elsewhere that hg could potentially be caused by the mother's and father's blood types being opposites (ie + and - ) I don't know what OH's blood type is (or mine for that matter) so I don't know if it applies to us. Any thoughts? If so I can definitely blame OH lol.

As to the meds - I am on ondansetron and metaclopramide - although I think the ondansetron is doing more. Just not enough to give me a life.

Sally8655 · 21/08/2013 00:10

Sorry you feel so bad Jen, I've had a miserable day too. Not been sick but really had to hold it in. I knew if I were to let it go there would be no stopping it.
Very interesting about the bloods theory. Take care xx

Totesamazeballs · 21/08/2013 08:02

Sorry yesterday was so bad Jen. With DS I had to move in with my parents and spent everyday in bed with a bucket. It was so rotten, I really feel for you. At the mo my mornings are like that and evenings too. I think we might have to move in with my parents when DH goes back to work next week.

I have my scan during prime sick time today. Hmm

Thanks for the link Lucinda and hello Murder.

iloveweetos · 21/08/2013 08:12

Hi everyone. Hope today is a better day and you feel a little better today x
Have any of you told work about pregnancy? Due to sickness?

Totesamazeballs · 21/08/2013 09:23

I am a SAHM but first time round I was signed off work at five weeks so it was unavoidable. Fortunately my boss is a poppet so he was very supportive. I saw my doc every week in those early days and as soon as I walked into surgery slumped over a plastic bag he would say 'no better this week eh?' And sign me off again. I felt guilty but there was nowt that could be done. Doc said he could lie but it was better to tell the truth as pregnancy sickness is counted differently. I shad to go to see an occupational therapist at sixteen weeks...all part of the usual HR motions.

Just found out cheese scones are not a safe food! I am wondering if I should try ice cream.

Tallyra · 21/08/2013 09:27

.....and its here. its only half 9 and I've thrown up 5 or 6 times so far. not sure whether to call gp or go in to Hosp and insist on seeing the consultant.

LucindaE · 21/08/2013 09:41

Tallyra This sounds really serious - hugs, poor you - seems like a good idea to go straight to hospital, you'll be severely dehydrated in no time and the records show your history.

God you poor thing! Second That advice. Keep us posted and good luck x

I had my scan this morning and it feels like mixed news. There is a heartbeat but bean is measuring just over a week behind which makes me 6 weeks as opposed to 7, even though its 7 weeks since LMP. Not holding onto much hope that this will work out as this normally means there is something wrong. I am not sure when I ovulated and because of my reverted uterus she said he was difficult to measure. Got to go back in 10 days. Dreading it now and also if I am only six weeks that means sickness has only just started.
