Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

This happened to me on Friday, then the medication wore off and I have been back at sq 1 ever since. TAKE THE MEDS

LittleMachine · 18/08/2013 17:25

Thanks Jen. I will do. Please don't hate me everyone!

Sally8655 · 18/08/2013 19:20

Little m- don't be deceived, I've had moments like that and then days of feeling horrendous!

LittleMachine · 18/08/2013 19:49

Really Sally? In my last pregnancy I had no respite ever, ever, although I'm not as severe as last time. I'm torn between hoping that by some miracle it's stopped and being scared something is wrong.

LucindaE · 19/08/2013 10:49

Littlemachine I can so emphasise! It's a horrible dilemma; how are things this am?
Sally and Eveyroe Hugs. Tallyra Any joy on fighting your corner with help from MOH's advice?

Little m- how are you today? If your still concerned, there's no harm in speaking with your local maternity department and maybe asking for a scan.
But just to reassure, I've had a couple of days here and there where I've felt relatively normal and then it's come back to bite me in the bum and constant puking.

I'm quite in and off right now, mornings are the best, then as the day goes on I get pretty sickly. I seem to be better when I just rest all day, but I'm sure people just think I'm attention seeking and lazy without getting up to do anything.
I can't wait to be able to go out and shop etc. really miss doing housework, crazy as that sounds. Desperate for a hair cut and colour. Oh and can't wait to go to b&q as my nesting instinct has hit and I have so much to do to get the house perfect before baby arrives!

I must be getting better to be able to think about these things, as before I didn't care at all.

How's everybody doing? Xxx

Totesamazeballs · 19/08/2013 11:31

Hi all,
I have been hesitating over whether to join this thread as I am only 7 w tomorrow but I feel soo sick and I don't know how I am going to cope with DS this time round.

I was sick about five times a day when i was pregnant with him but this time I have only done some severe wretching so far which is what I was like when I had a MMC so I am not even sure things will turn out ok.

Currently in bed sipping lemonade as DH is on holiday this week.

Are any of you taking anti sickness pills? I remember first time round my doc said it was better if I could avoid them and signed me off work. I moved into my parents and sat by the loo all day. Obv not an option this time round. DS is 16 months so I think I am going to need drugs to cope. Also, I have no sickness free hours. Same as before, it's 24/7.

Oh and ginger does bugger all! Can I join please?

Sally8655 · 19/08/2013 12:12

Hi totes,

Poor you :-(

I tried just about all sickness meds and now on cyclizine and ondansetron.
Only found out about ondansetron through this thread and been on it since 6 weeks.
They say the sooner you start with meds the more effective they are. It hasn't been a miracle cure as still nauseas most of the time but they have helped with not throwing up as frequently as I would without.
This is my first so can only imagine how hard it is with another to look after.
Ginger, peppermint etc did nothing for me, if anything it made me worse and I spent a small fortune trying to find something that worked.
Im afraid only time has helped, I'm 17 weeks and things have only recently been improving a little.
Just try to keep down any kind of fluids and maybe a little sugar if you can to avoid the dreaded ketones and IV fluids.
Lucinda usually suggests getting some ketone test sticks from the chemist so you can monitor these yourself at home. If they are high you usually will need to have treatment in hospital.

Hope this helps xxx

Totesamazeballs · 19/08/2013 13:55

Thanks Sally. I haven't heard of ketone sticks before. I seem to be managing to sip a little lemonade. With Ds mine improved at 16 weks. i still felt sick but stopped hurling.

I remember realising that the nausea had gone when i had my first meal after he was born. Hold onto that thought. And hey, clearly I forgot how bad it was because I am here for more!

Has anyone heard of protein being helpful? I read somewhere that it helps with morning sickness.

Tallyra · 19/08/2013 17:55

I have also heard that and during my previous mmcs I craved fried egg when I got to a stage of being able to eat anything. I'm currently 5+3 and here in anticipation of it hitting me again soon. I managed to get my doctor to give me a prescription for cyclizine, so I will start taking it when I get to about 6w to try and delay the sickness.

LittleMachine · 19/08/2013 18:03

I was really sick this morning but haven't been too bad throughout the day, more like 'normal' pregnancy sickness than HG.
Trying not to worry.

Welcome totes and congratulations. I think most of us are/have been on meds. I'm on cyclizine.

LucindaE · 19/08/2013 18:15

Totes Welcome, I can't better Sally's advice, yes, you can get kesostix from chemists if and when it hits you and there's any danger of dehydration, and I hope this time it is neither an mmc nor Hyperemesis! I really feel for you about mmc's, I had one, and it spoils the next time with nerves. Tallyra is in the same boat as you there. I think that was callous of the GP refusing meds - nobody would ask for them if they could cope without - particularly with that level of vomiting - most women on here, as others say, are on medication and some are on a whole cocktail as the only way to keep out of hospital and there have never been any abnormalities reported.
Littlemachine Hugs. Tallyra Cyclezine isn't wonderfully generous, as you can get that over the counter (by an irony of you are not pregnant, though it has been prescribed for decades for severe pregnancy sickness).
Hope Everyone is managing. Autumnal weather here, a lot better to suffer in than a heatwave...

hello all. hope all are well?
totes get meds!!! i am 14 weeks pg and dd is also 16m. second hg pregnancy for me. the hardest bit is coping with a tantruming toddler whilst having hg. you will need the meds..... trust me!!!!

on the subject, been having a mild panic about having 2 under 2 lol!! dd is nearly 17m and a walking/talking/running/tantrum throwing mini person!! i tell myself nothing will be as bad as hg. breath and repeat lol x

Totesamazeballs · 19/08/2013 19:01

Thanks for the welcome. As I type this I am sitting in a dark nursery next to the cot with DS screaming because I put him down before he was asleep. For the record,I have always put him down drowsy and its been fine u til now. Humph. Tantruming toddlers you say? Wink

Not sure about 2 under two. Alcohol and coffee might be the answer. Or hiding in the loo?

LucindaE · 19/08/2013 19:17

Tote and Tallyra It is very difficult, - I can see if you are anything like me you may have a fear of 'putting a curse on it' by pressing for much pre emptive treatment at this stage. I've just seen wavesandsmiles lovely photos of the new baby. After all her sufferings that is so nice to see - I think she may win the medal nobody could possibly want of having the worst case on the Thread Nobody Wants to Need. Oh dear, well, he looks angelic, and that is some compensation.
Feekerry and others, I don't know how anyone manages to cope with a toddler and Hyperemesis at all. Anyone who does deserves a medal, too.
Sorry to anyone rudely ignored. Senile cat on my knee, poor thing, very hard to type.

Hi ladies, I feel a bit of a fraud posting in here as I've not actually vomited yet. But this permanent nausea is debilitating and I need to moan vent! Also, I'm only just 6wks so am quite worried the vomiting is around the corner... Can I join you for a bit? Blush hopefully not long

I feel sick and dizzy from the minute I get up to the minute I go to bed. Eating helps, until I've finished then I get horrible after tastes which make me worse. Water is evil. And my body seems to prefer the other end as an exit strategy (I think my body is averse to vomiting as I rarely do). I've got one ds, 23mo, already and I wasn't sick with him. So it's a bit of shock.

I do recognise it's nowhere near as bad as some of you have it though

Totesamazeballs · 19/08/2013 21:30

Hi Misty. I am at the same stage too. It's hard to drink enough and I think I am permanently thirsty but the nausea hides it. Eating helps while I am actually chewing but I feel rank immediately afterwards.

Also, anyone else doing the biggest burps? I wonder what the neighbours must think!?

Sally8655 · 19/08/2013 21:45

Evening ladies

Misty- that's pretty much how I started, I'd see your GP soon for some meds.

Fee, totes and others who have a small child already, you are so brave!! And as lucinda says, you totally deserve a trophy for going through HG at the same time as looking after a little one.

My pregnancy was strangely unexpected. Although I tempted fate, really didn't think I could conceive due to medical issues. I have to say I'm so relieved I could and over the moon, however after feeling this poorly for so long, I think I'm scarred for life and couldn't go through it a second time. You ladies who have suffered more than once are amazing!!

Sally8655 · 19/08/2013 21:48

Ps totes- the burps are unreal, from really deep, constant and awful taste. Try some airwaves chewing gum. Oh and gaviscon didn't work for mine, but they improved over time.

LittleMachine · 19/08/2013 23:06

Sally, I had a similar situation with DS. I was told I couldn't conceive naturally, so didn't use contraception. 7 months later, there I was, vomming my spleen out!
I said never again after that pregnancy and horrible labour. 18 months later...Grin

Tallyra · 19/08/2013 23:33

oh no. My stomach is feeling very tight and queasy tonight... Sad

Sally8655 · 19/08/2013 23:53

Little m- it was over 2 years unprotected for me so really didn't expect it and still don't feel completely ready for what's ahead. So funny but I must have used about 8 tests and still didn't believe it so doc sent me for a scan at 5 weeks, even then I was still in denial as I couldn't see a thing. Funny how things turn out :-)

jenpatnim · 20/08/2013 00:00

Hey all - I think I am settled back into the meds after the colossal mistake of missing a dose on Friday as I felt ok. Still feel incredibly nauseated all the time and exhausted - don't know how I am going to cope with work next week.

Ate a bit better today but still feel horrendous. I feel constantly on the verge of vomiting, even though the tablets make sure I don't. It is an odd and horrible sensation.

Welcome to the new members - I wish I had found this board sooner! Also with you guys on the 'scarred for life' feeling - I don't really like the idea of an only child but I don't know that I can ever go through this again. It really has been horrendous and there is no sign of it letting up. I am terrified that it is going to last the whole time - I miss food! I like food!

Totesamazeballs · 20/08/2013 09:33

How far along are you Jen?

I have just dispatched DH to get me some gaviscon as a first try. Anyone heard of or tried Maxalon?

Sally8655 · 20/08/2013 09:49

Totes- maxolon is metoclopramide, it speeds up digestion and can help some people with sickness. It was one of the first I tried and didn't work for me. May help with the burps though. I know a few ladies combined it with other meds.
