Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Hi ladies,

I have been keeping a low profile as I was coping on the drugs, and as it is the summer holidays, slumping on the sofa has been copable.

However, I ran out of the ondastrone, and spent the last 24hrs the sickest I have been this far. 9 bouts of vomming including 4 am and 5.30am, which has never happened before. Thankfully have some more ondastrone now, but very dehydrated. Self checking my ketones with every wee, but if I can't keep water down today it's going to be a trip to hosp I think!

I'm 12+1 today, and was really hoping I'd start to feel better. If anything I feel worse!

Sorry to see so many new names on the thread.

LucindaE · 21/08/2013 12:13

Totes Oh no, that is really distressing. How awful for you having to wait ten days, can't they put you out of your suspense before then?
Hugs. I really feel for you, wish there was something I could do.
Becca Oh dear, another possible hospital admission, then? That sounds nasty, poor you.
Tallyra I hope you can contact us via mobile to say how things are.

Totes Oh sweetheart :(

becca You test your own urine?

Beccadugs · 21/08/2013 12:43

Totes I'm sorry -try not to worry too much, I was sure I knew web I ovulated, but was out by a week. Also, just this morning the lady managed to measure three different weeks.

murderorgoths I ordered some Ketosticks off amazon. Was quite frustrated by my GPs blasé responses at one point. They are very handy though, as it means I can keep an eye on things (control freak Blush)

MurderOfGoths · 21/08/2013 12:52

That makes sense. In my first pregnancy the GP wouldn't refer me to the hospital even though I was +3 ketones (she didn't tell me I was +3 either). Some can be really shit can't they?

feekerry · 21/08/2013 13:13

hello ladies. welcome to the joiners!
Jen re hg and blood types etc my mum had hg with me and my brother but best part of 30 years ago so i also reckon its heridatry.....
totes hope your okay. really do. things may be okay tho..... a week difference at early scans is not alot really.... and bean had a heartbeat. xxx
murder i also do my own pee as hospital say i can go straight to them as soon as i hit 3+

LittleMachine · 21/08/2013 14:22

Totes, I know it's hard but try not to worry. With DS I had a scan at almost 6 weeks and they said I was 4+1, 2 weeks later I still measured behind, and it was only at the 12 week scan (by their dates) he'd caught up and I was 13+4 or something (if that makes sense). Some beans are just slow starters.
Will keep everything crossed for you.

MurderOfGoths · 21/08/2013 16:15

I'm hiding in here, just mentioned hyperemesis on another thread and been recommended ginger biscuits. Staying here to stop myself being rude. Have to keep telling myself they mean well..

LittleMachine · 21/08/2013 16:22

Gosh ginger biscuits, whodathunkit??
Must try that one.

Has anyone tried a plain cracker or biscuit before you get up. I hear that's good. Wink

jenpatnim · 21/08/2013 17:34

Totes - fingers crossed for you.

I have spent the day in hospital with 3+ ketones and more vomiting and retching. I am home with cannula in place and have to go back tomorrow. I got 2 litres of saline and a vitamin drip, and while it has perked me up a little I still feel very sick.

Everyone else ok? Or as near as can be?

Totesamazeballs · 21/08/2013 17:40

Hanks for your kind words everyone! Perked me up!

Jen, awful, it's just so horrible and it's like torture by nausea. I hope you can get some rest tonight.

Lol, ginger biscuits and a cracker before you get up. If only it were that simple. Where did this ginger myth stem from? It does sod all.

feekerry · 21/08/2013 17:59

Jen Do you get to use the iv drip at home then??
that sounds like a great idea. is it??
id love to be able to use one at home instead of 3/4 days in a hospital

wavesandsmiles · 21/08/2013 19:08

Hi all, just checking back in after a few busy days and I'm gutted to see new faces and people being so ill Sad

For those newbies, I had my little boy 3 and a half weeks ago, and had severe HG throughout. I was lucky enough to get back to oral ondansetron after months of it via IV.... 7 admissions then daily trips for IV fluids and meds for about a month with cannulas in being resited every 4 days then after wards I had a PICC line which was a lot more comfortable, and made the IV treatment more bearable.

Anyway, that's my background. Little Caspian is so very worth it, it was like a miracle how I gave birth and the sickness stopped! And just the past week, now my energy has started to return, I realise how terribly ill I was.

I hugely recommend everyone uses ketostix and sel tests and goes straight to hospital when they get to 3+. Also the famous drinkable juice was robinsons peach, ice cold. I was prescribed fortisip drinks which I made into ice cubes and lollies, diluted in water, and also jelly.

Also, glycerol suppositories are very helpful and avoid he hideousness of manual evacuation. They are available on amazon too... I also got prescribed ranitidine which helped with the acid caused by all the vomiting.

Have to dash, hungry baby. Ironically he has not been sick at all.. Reckon I did enough of that for us both whilst pregnant!

Take care everyone, ill be lurking and chipping in if I can help

LucindaE · 21/08/2013 21:01

Wavesandsmiles Lovely to hear from you with your encouraging post - so nice of you to come on with newborn Caspain needing so much of your time - that was it, peach squash! Everyone seemed to be drinking it on here at one time.
Iloveweenies Welcome, I'm sorry, I missed your post, I seem to be getting more and more vague, that comes of calling my cat senile! I think it's very difficult for people to keep their pregnancies secret with this level of sickness and that's awkward sometimes.
Jen Sorry you've had to go to hospital today, and poor you that the nausea is no better for all that fluid - we haven't heard from Tallyra since she was so ill this am, so I'm afraid she must be in too and Becca struggling to get those ketones down.
Tote As others say, those kesostix are an excellent way of bypassing unsympathetic GP's - most hospitals admit pregnant women with 3+ ketones, but some women have such horrible experiences in hospital, like Sally that they avoid going in if they possibly can - I can't believe that they didn't give her a sick bowl, for goodness sake, I'm still angry about that [red].
Murder and LittleMachine Ginger and a dry biscuit, why did nobody think of that? Why did nobody think of 'eat little and often' and 'have a change of scene' etc etc. I would be tempted to say 'No S Sherlock' (as they said in my long ago youth) I know people mean well, but it is provoking. It's like people saying for migraines 'Have you ever thought of taking paracetemol?'
Feekerry I know from standing in on a US Hyperemesis thread some years ago that they routinely do give people home PICC lines over there- but as people have to rely medical insurance, I think, so it's a bit complicated. As lovely Wavesandsmiles comes from the channel islands, I suppose it is similar there and you have to use medical insurance? It would be so good if hospitals could have that for IV at home in he UK.
Becca I hope that your get relief at 14-16 weeks, then. A lot more do than at twelve weeks, anyway.
Totes That is an awful picture about 'slumped in the surgery over a plastic bag' but so well put [green]. It's nice the doctor was understanding.
Misty and Choc and Everyone I hope OK.
Apologies if I've forgotten anyone.
Lucinda

Hey - I do not have the IV home with me - just the cannula in my arm. It is bandaged up to protect it and it is so that they don't have to fight with my veins tomorrow morning.

I do, however, have a banging headache, not sure whether it is the stress or what.

I do have to say, though, that my hospital could not be nicer, or more caring. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they are so lovely. I had 2 midwives and a dr in a conference with the pharmacy for 20 minutes trying to decide where to go with my treatment. They know me by name now and they really could not do more to help me. Except find a magic cure, obviously.

ChocChaffinch · 21/08/2013 21:35

aloha.
At moment I am taking Avomine x 1 per day, at bedtime (as is a sedative too)
but need to up the dose to 2 tablets, it's ok as it says on my script instrucs to rise to 2 tablets when required.
What's happening is I start projectile puking after 5pm (like a gremlin ffs) at sight or minutest mention of any kind of food. and it's fast hard puking. and I didn't have a sickbag. so had to open cardoor and puke on carpark and road a number of times

VOMITSHAME EMOTICON

so do I take 2 avomine at night, or 1 in night 1 in morning?

also they are fairly big tablets and hard work to take and keep down.
THIS SUCKS SO MUCH

Sally8655 · 21/08/2013 22:00

Evening all, welcome to new ladies. Sorry your in here and suffering with the rest of us.

Totes- I'd try not to worry, like little m, I was measuring early at my first scan. The first was at five weeks, there was nothing to see. Had to go back 10 days later and there was a tiny speck. Still measured behind, then at 12 week scan I was measured well over 13 weeks. Now I'm so big, people keep saying I must be 20 weeks already when I'm actually 17. It's crazy how things go.

Jen- poor you, hope your visit was not as unpleasant as mine were. As lucinda says, I had the most horrendous experiences both times I was admitted. I hate the idea of giving birth there but unfortunately don't have a choice as I'm high risk and its the only one with facilities.

Fee- I rang my bupa this week, just to see what they covered for pregnancy, if anything. Wish I thought of it earlier, as they do cover for home IV fluids and meds if needed in the long run. they also cover c-sections and other treatment needed resulting from pregnancy related problems.

I had a more productive day. Just finished being sick, however I managed to get some housework done and I'm totally chuffed with myself. It may have just been organising my drawers and changing bed linen but nevertheless I'm pleased.
Midwife appointment tomorrow, got my long list of questions and requests at the ready, hope she knows what she's in for!

xxx

Sally8655 · 21/08/2013 22:02

Just seen your most recent post Jen, I'm so pleased they were nice xx

RNJ3007 · 21/08/2013 22:06

Hi all. Echoing waves sentiments. So sorry that you're suffering, but Lucinda et al are great support.

My little Luke is 6 days old now (came early) and despite how ill I was, is doing great, despite being small. Going to be in premie clothes and nappies for a bit, and he's cluster feeding (presumably to catch up on what I didn't provide in pregnancy)

I dropped 4 clothes sizes and was admitted more times than I care to recall. Tried a world of different drugs. But now after 6 days, I am finding an appetite again, though nothing like Pre-preg now and have managed a couple of walks with Luke in the moby.

After two HG pregnancies, I can safely say I am done, but my two kids are worth the horror that was vomiting until in labour.

Hoping you all get some relief soon, and follow waves suggestions. Well worth it (ESP fortisip!)

SlinkyB · 21/08/2013 22:43

RNJ Congratulations on baby Luke! I always remember you saying about throwing up during lessons/out of the window. Glad you and baby are ok.

Interesting that both yourself and waves had boys; I keep getting told I'm probably having a girl this time as girls make you sicker?! Yet another old wives tale.

jen glad hospital were lovely. Sally well done on chores, what a triumph when you're so ill.

Tallyra · 22/08/2013 08:44

congrats RNJ!

sorry for going awol. I went straight to hospital and been on a drip since about 5pm. feeling much better now hoping to go home later today but who knows.

Totesamazeballs · 22/08/2013 09:05

Morning all.
Congratulations to Waves and RNJ - brilliant news! It's amazing how your appetite springs back after giving birth. It's like the past nine months never happened except you are able to see and hold the fruits of your labour. Mine was a boy too - even though everyone said you are more sick with girls.

Choc - I honestly don't know and can only suggest you call the doc for advice if they are the helpful sort and know what they are talking about. Let us know how you get on.

Sally, I second the congrats on doing chores when you are so ill.

Jen - I hope today is better for you.

I am starting to feel like a fraud on this thread as HG hasn't kicked in yet, just bad nausea and a bit of vomiting. Maybe it won't this time. Last time it was from the off so perhaps I will escape it. I am bed bound in the mornings but can get up in the afternoons.

Totesamazeballs · 22/08/2013 10:46

Ok...sickness ramped up this morning so maybe I spoke too soon!

Sally8655 · 22/08/2013 11:59

Totes, I think the nausea is more debilitating than the vomiting. For me anyhow, as I usually get a but if relief after puking. I know some dont though.

Just been to see midwife and for the first time my blood pressure was normal, sugars were fine and urine analysis was ok. My bloods came back b rh d negative, whatever that means, so I need the injections but all is well. Just waiting for 20 week scan now and hope that's ok. Still a bit worried about the vq scan I had at 12 weeks.

Beccadugs · 22/08/2013 12:16

Morning Ladies,

I agree that the nausea is just as bad and as debilitating as actually vomiting. I find it very hard to do anything without overwhelming sweaty waves of nausea, whether it ends in sickness or not!

I think that, for me, the ondastrone is actually working. Although I still feel rough, I can actually do limited things (unload the dishwasher, fiddle about on the internet, I am going to try some gentle tidying later too!!)

I am dreading going back to work in a couple of weeks (teacher). I need about two hours between waking up and taking my meds and being able to function. I am sure this will be worse if it means waking up at 5.30am.

Probably best not to worry about it too much at the moment though. I'll be 14 weeks when we go back, so might start to feel better.
