Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Ah RNJ congratulations! I'm so happy for you. Are you ok after that fast delivery? Did you need a lot of fixing?
I'm glad he's here safe and well you've had a tough time.

RNJ3007 · 15/08/2013 17:32

One tiny not-quite-a-tear that needed no treatment! Miracle!!!! Think the failed stitching from DD helped. And that he is smaller. Mentally a bit shocked, but love him list crazy!

LittleMachine · 15/08/2013 17:38

Ah that's great. Well done! Has DD met him yet?

Beccadugs · 15/08/2013 18:21

CONGRATULATIONS RNJ! Really hope you can have your take away tonight - enjoy every mouth full - obviously enjoy your little bundle too!!

Beccadugs · 15/08/2013 18:28

FEE - so glad you got some relief! I am sure it make the sickness worse!

Reebok · 15/08/2013 18:45

Hello all, sorry I haven't been able to pop on. Baby has been playing up and kept me busy.

Rnj, excellent news! Congrats! I am so pleased for you and hoping you will start to feel much better now from the hell that is HG.

Mop! Great to see you on here! Thank you so much. You were another one I could rely on and who helped me through during the dark days so thank you. :)

How are the rest of you ladies feeling?

Welcome back lucinda! Hope the break away was good!

Hyperhelpmum · 15/08/2013 18:51

Hi all, just popped back to see how everyone is doing! Massive congrats to Waves and RNJ in the birth of your baby boys! Fantastic news! A little jealous as I'm still only 26 weeks and feeling really sick again. After a few weeks feeling what I would describe as mildly 'hungover' I now feel really nauseous most of the time again :( I fear this sickness will plague me all the way through now. It's no longer hyperemesis as not vomiting but feel rough all the same. In a way it's hard as just keep going with work, 5 yr old and 3 yr old etc as not quite ill enough to lie in bed but oh how I wish I could! It's worth warning all you early days ladies I've been really anaemic too and awaiting retesting next week to see if I need an iron or blood transfusion. This doesn't help with nausea and exhaustion plus can only mange spatone as iron tabs make me sicker. All done lucinda and others for keeping up the good work and supporting everyone through this difficult time.

Hyperhelpmum · 15/08/2013 18:52

Sorry for typos! On phone!

jenpatnim · 16/08/2013 12:40

Lucinda, I have considered the fact that I might be too sick to go to work but I have decided that I have to at least try the staff training days and see how I go. I don't think my dr would have any problem signing me off sick if I asked. The kids aren't in until 3rd Sep so I have some time to see how I am coping.

In other news, 14 weeks today and feeling .... ok? Nearly afraid to trust it but I haven't taken any meds yet today. Fingers crossed I may have turned a corner, as my mother keeps hoping for.

LucindaE · 16/08/2013 18:14

Hyper I am really sorry that you are still suffering. Even if you aren't being sick any more, it is so debilitating to feel horrible the whole time. I think one of the worst things for women on here who suffer throughout is the thoughtless remarks and unwanted advice go on throughout, 'You can't still be sick?' sort of thing Sad. I think it is very mean of fate to give you some hope of being better, and then have it sneaking back later on. I think Kalidasa and others have had the same thing; I don't know if it is hormonal surges or what.
Jenn I am glad it is a good day for you, and fingers crossed that is an excellent sign that things are on the up generally.
Littlemachine Sally and Everyone I hope coping. Feekerry and Talyra too?

Tallyra I've found what I was looking for, MOHs post which may help you.

I just wanted to let you know about updated Clinical Knowledge Summary from NICE, the link is cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy It's a huge improvement on the former version and actually recommends lots of medications including ondansetron, and says explicitly that a woman's quality of life must be taken into account when treating nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. These are not very indepth guidelines, but certainly soemthing to push in the direction of a reluctant GP, it's NICE, it's difficult for them to argue against it I would have thought.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists are working on full proper guidelines for the management of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy including HG. I'm on the working group and the other members of it are all excellent, Roger Gadsby from PSS amongst them. The doctor who's heading the group has had HG herself and runs the best facility in the Midlands, if not the UK at Birmingham Women's for treating HG. Unfortunately for you ladies the guidelines will not be out in time to help you, but might help future pregnancies or friends or relatives. In the meantime, you could let your GP know that guidelines are in progress and they could contact Manjeet Shehmar at Birmingham Women's or Roger Gadsby (he's a retired GP and emeritus prof at Warwick uni) for advice on treatment if they think you're just making it up about other women getting ondansetron.

PM me if you want any more info about any of this or you want pdfs of any treatment protocols.

Champagne I hope you are not too bad? As you say, it is very very hard and often impossible to go back to work with this too early.
Choc I hope you got those meds.
Gentle cyber pats to all.

hello,
thanks for the replies, and congratulations to the lady who's given birth Smile
I started with cyclizine, then went back to docs as it wasn't working, now Im on maxillon as it worked for me last time, after Id been dripped anyway; it doesn't yet appear to be helping.
It is a separate script from the cyclizine, can I take them both?
I have high ketones in my urine, but am not dehydrated so doc isn't too worried. I suppose if I get dehydrated will have to go on drip.
Luckilly Im drinking a lot of orange-y stuff, just had a Fanta, had a tropical thing from costa this morn; and have been craving fresh orange juice.
still so so so so sick! it's exhausting. about 10x today, lot of saliva and stomach acid, mainly.

Tallyra · 16/08/2013 21:27

Thank you Lucinda. I'm not feeling sick yet, but my appetite is changing. I'm getting hungry sooner but not wanting to eat much, so I can feel it creeping up on me.

Omg way to speak too soon. Really bad day after all, projectile vomiting and feeling like death.

But I can feel a hint of a bump.....

Tallyra · 17/08/2013 11:42

Yay Jen, bump is good!!

LucindaE · 17/08/2013 13:32

Choc Those meds aren't working for sure if it's ten times a day, mother hen is anxious that you keep testing with those kesostix as its so hard to keep hydrated. I did a test on my non pregnant self with a bad migraine where I was puking approx ten times a day, and despite sipping water all the time I had 3+ ketones in about twelve hours. I'm pretty sure they an be used together, but might be worth ringing and asking, saying that the max on its own is doing no good at all.
Tallyra I hope that helps, that of course was a quote from MOH, I don't have any scientific background myself, and I hope you can use all that or get in contact with her to further your case for pre emptive meds with GP!
Jen Sorry about projectile vomit - but I'll join in congratulations over bump beginning to show.
Champagne Feekerry Littlemachine Sally and Everyone I hope today is a not too bad day. At least not so hot now.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

Hi all

I'm back to being stuck in bed :-( feeling very sorry for myself.
Been able to eat cheese scones and ice cream for past 2 days. Trying to sip ice water as I do feel quite dehydrated. Skin is very dry and tight.
Had a few episodes of vomiting but nothing too major, just the constant nausea to contend with. Im still taking ondansetron and cyclizine at alternate 3 hours as if i don't i vomit uncontrollably. My new GP is happy for me to have these on repeat a month at a time.
Experiencing a lot of twinges and random pains. These are even more painful when I cough or sneeze.
Feels really strange as baby is starting to kick a little and it feels like I've got rice crispies exploding in my belly.
Can't get over how huge my belly is despite losing loads of weight. Yesterday i had to cut a slit in the top of my knickers as they were so tight around my bump. Everybody who sees me swears I'm much further along butI know that's not possible.

How are others doing, interested to see how ladies at 16-17 weeks are coping now that apparently the worst is over. Lots of hugs to everybody xxx

feekerry · 17/08/2013 17:32

hello all. hope all are well? glad to hear bumps are protruding for most. i look like that alien from the argos advert. skinny as but with a huge belly lol!!
sally sorry you feel rubbish. whilst i feel better (or more that hg is under control) i do feel crap alot of the time. my skin is awful too. really dry. i never wear make up or do my hair now. its just scraped back. i do look like death....

Sally8655 · 17/08/2013 18:19

Fee- haha, I do the same thing, hair scragged back after washing, not even bothering to dry it! No make up, and look horrendous. Covered in spots around chin and on back. Most days I just stay in pj's.

jenpatnim · 17/08/2013 19:09

I was in PJs all day, too. I have heaved a fair amount today but havent eaten anything - just sipped orange juice. I am hoping to be able to eat tomorrow or else I will start worrying about the dreaded ketones and end up back on a drip.

I feel horribly nauseated all the time, exhausted and miserable. Add me to the spotty, greasy haired, unkempt club.

ChocChaffinch · 17/08/2013 20:05

have had a weird old day today, dh has been off with me, and waited on me hand and foot meaning he prepped all of my food meaning that Ive eaten quite a lot Smile
still felt v nauseus but eating constantly is another way to tackle HG from what I recall from my 2nd pg. haven't felt thirsty though, so am going to sip some orange in a while.
it's funny how one good day can change your entire outlook. I even got a bit excited this morning, reading the mothercare catalogue Grin
feel pukey now, need to keep it all in

Tallyra · 17/08/2013 23:10

aww that sounds like a good day choc. My dh has been lovely to me too - I overdid it trying to mow the lawn and have a bad headache now. He cooked dinner and let me lie on the sofa all evening like a queen! I'm worried though that it might turn into a migraine and I can't take my triptans any more! Sad Sad

LucindaE · 18/08/2013 11:17

Glad some DH's are behaving well Smile! I'm sure you all look a lot nicer than you think! Sally and others, I certainly 'let myself go' (to use a phrase from my own mother's era) completely at my worst, uncleaned teeth, dirty hair, face the colour of chalk or Envy and as you say, spots, no make up and forgot how to use a hairbrush...
Choc it is brave of you to eat a lot.
Jen Hugs, sorry it is so foul.
Congratulations on bumps. That 'rice crispies' (excellent descriptoin) sensation is so exciting when it starts...Later on it seemd like a warm internal tickling...
Tallyra My GP was always so mean about triptans that I gave up on it as I found the migraine just came back after twelve hours if you only took one. I hope you escaped a migraine Sad
Sorry to anyone rudely ignored.

I'm panicking today. I've had a really sick few days, bad enough to consider hospital, although I didn't need to in the end.
Today I've woken up, I wasn't sick, I'm not nauseous, I can eat and drink. No aversions. I haven't taken any medication.
From full blown HG to nothing? At 10 weeks? That doesn't happen does it. Really worried. Sad
