Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Sorry just catching up for yesterday.
Fee - DS is 19 months. He can be quite challenging and doesn't sleep consistently well, but he's being a little star today and entertaining himself.
Lucinda - I'm not great and not awful. I'm keeping some food and drink down with the cyclizine, but it's making me dizzy. I'm back at the doctors in 30 minutes, I'm going to ask for ondansatron again. The doctor I saw on Monday had no idea about it being given in pregnancy - she'd never heard of that happening.

However I know I could be much worse so I'm grateful.

RN, I'm sorry for your loss Sad it must be a really hard time for you.

feekerry · 25/07/2013 10:31

champagne generally ondansatron can be a bit of a miracle drug re hg. the combination of cyclizine and ondansatron is generally most effective however some folk do have problems getting ondansatron due to its cost (its a v expensive drug and alot of docs won't prescribe it) some docs also say its not proven safe in pregnancy however there have never been any issues its just they don't want to carry out drugs tests on pregnant women.
generally tho it as seen as the most effective anti emetic.
sally i was chronically sick last time (i.e full blown hg) till about 23 weeks. i never hit my pre pregnancy weight till about 27 weeks. even after that i had a pretty limited diet and was still sick at least once a day(tho felt better)
i only ended up 14lbs over my pre preg weight when i was full term. dd was 8lb12!!!!!! so really no issues there!!
please don't worry
i know it sounds umbeliveable but your body will nuture and look after the baby above anything else. usually to your detriment but babe will be fine!!x

LittleMachine · 25/07/2013 11:40

I've just been prescribed a small amount of ondansatron for my worst days. The doctor I saw was lovely.

Sally8655 · 25/07/2013 12:52

Champagne- glad your going back to GP, don't let them just dismiss the sickness and push for a stronger med if needed.

Fee- that's good to know, I've lost just over 2 stone now and only 13 weeks so it has been a concern.

Checked urine just now and ketones were 4+ so trying to down some water and eat some fruit with yoghurt. Don't know if it'll stay down but really don't want another hospital stay, so will do everything I can at home.

If not improved tomorrow I may have to call midwife.
My ketones have been a steady 2+ throughout apart from when i was really bad so think its because I've been so sick the past few days and hence why I've lost so much weight this week too.

I've managed to keep my meds down so far today, hopefully ill feel a bit better soon xx

feekerry · 25/07/2013 12:54

sally i reckon your having a girl by the way!!! you sound similar to how i was in my first pg and that was a girl. they drain the mother of all beauty apparently!!x

Sally8655 · 25/07/2013 13:17

Fee- haha, I'm not sure you know, my legs are so unbelievably hairy. They need shaving every day. Not that I do as I'm not well enough. Also starting to see hairs on belly. I heard this means a boy!
Husband wants a boy but I'm not fussed either way. I think a little girl would be nice though.

RNJ3007 · 25/07/2013 14:11

I have been far worse this time, with our boy, that I was with DD. I have turned into a gorilla, haha.

I didn't lose any weight this week! Finally!

Now... Off to the osteo to see if I can walk without crunching wildly...

feekerry · 25/07/2013 14:25

hmm see rjn i am better this time than i was last time so i reckon im having a boy. all my friends had boys last time round and looked amazing, bloomed et etc. i looked and felt like road kill and had a girl.
i am also v hairy but that might be coz i struggle to have a bath let alone shave!
i just feel different this time. i knew from day one last time it was a girl. just had a gut feeling.
this time i feel its a boy. i would love another girl but don't think it will be.

jenpatnim · 25/07/2013 17:27

Guys, I was taking the ondansetron with the cyclizine, but I have found that the cyclizine was making it impossible for me to sleep at night, so U have stopped it. It does mean that the sickness is worse, but at least I can sleep. I am completely exhausted, hardly eating and miserable.

I'm not vomiting very much, thanks to the meds, but checking the ketostix I have gone from 0 to ++ in a few days. I need to get this under control, as I do not want to go back in to hospital.

Also, is there anything that can be done about the constipation? I have constant tummy cramps like trapped wind - very uncomfortable.

Sorry to see that everyone else is still struggling, I hope we all get through this ok xx

Sally8655 · 25/07/2013 18:54

Hi Jen, with 2+ I was told this was ok and just to drink a bit more water and eat a little more sugar. I've had 2+ most of my pregnancy and only get concerned if 3 or over. i was 4+ earlier today but have managed to bring it down myself. I too dont want another hospital stay.

With the constipation the only thing that works for me is movicol. You can get this from your GP, they will probably prescribe over the phone as mine did so you don't have to wait for an appointment. I had tried everything before getting relief with this. Hope this helps xx

LucindaE · 25/07/2013 20:57

Sally So glad you've brought ketones down. Did they ever give you a bowl at hospital, I was astounded at that piece of neglect? Good advice about movical.
FeekerryWould it be an over active thyroid? Congratulations on elective Ceasereon.
RNJ Really sorry about your Grandmother, and its effect on your bp.
Hugs.
Champagne I am glad the sickness has gone.
Sally I can't improve on Feekerry's reassurance about starvation and the baby taking its nourishment from you somehow. People have been on here suffering throughout and somehow produce 9lb babies...
Did someone mention one of the B vitamins? Thiamine? I've heard that in combinaion with other meds it's good.
LittleMachine You are so brave to go for it with a toddler who doesn't sleep much. My sleepless toddler was one of the reasons I didn't go for it again. Again, I can only echo the advice of others about Ondansetron. Unfortunately, I do think the expense is a factor, too.

Lol about hairiness, RNJ and others! I didn't realise this was a symptom- I hope it is one the head, too...
Jen That is really unlucky about the cyclazine giving you insomnia, I had heard of it making people sleepy.
Sorry to anyone ignored. Hope Everyone hasn't melted yet...
Lucinda

Sorry I have been AWOL and on phone now so can't name check. Having the most awful week with what feels like endless latent labour. Spent much of yesterday at hospital and the whole of today. Protein in my wee for no obvious reason so that had to be investigated, my pulse has been elevated, but bp low as normal. Have also not slept in 2 days due to severe and persistent back pain so I'm shattered.

Vomiting a lot worse the past few days, possibly because of the pain and sleep deprivation? Seriously hoping my little one puts in an appearance pretty quickly, I never thought if end up at this stage to be honest, I'm now 39 + 2 and both my DCs had appeared by this point.

Oh, and no chance of induction before 42 fricking weeks. Apparently HG and now severe persistent pain does not constitute a clinical reason for induction. So potentially another 2.5 weeks of this. I know that must sound like nothing to those of you in the earlier stages, but I'm exhausted now after so many months of this.

Sally8655 · 25/07/2013 23:15

Waves I'm hoping for your baby to pop out soon! Xx

LittleMachine · 26/07/2013 07:51

Waves, it could be any day. You're nearly there. Well done for making it through! My vomiting increased significantly in the last 2 weeks or so last time.

Is anyone else suffering with diarrhoea? I was really constipated last time, because of the dehydration, but totally the opposite this time.

LucindaE · 26/07/2013 09:48

wavesandsmiles Poor poor you, what a finale, that Hyperemesis doesn't want to let you go, and this latent labour sounds awful., with sleeplessness too and the heat. I would like to award you and RNJ especially and many others, too, 'Hyperemesis Heroine' badges...Not much longer, and it will all be a distant nightmare, and you will be coming on to say to others in despair, 'You can do it'. I wonder why Hyperemesis isn't a reason for induction? Induction's pretty nasty,as I know too well, but it sounds better than this latent labour.
LittleMachine I had diahorrea (I never can spell that) later on along with that heartburn, but not early on. It's horrible.
Sympathies to all as this heat continues, though it rained.

Well thought I was feeling better, until I went online to order a meat hamper for parents anniversary and I'm puking like square one again.
Wish I just stuck with flowers now!

Lucinda- they never did give me a sick bowl, had to run to the toilet. Plus I was in a room with three other ladies so the noises from the toilet would have turned their tummys too.
I tried the b vitamins but they made me more sick.

feekerry · 26/07/2013 20:01

i too have had some real vile voms today. you know, the no warnings type! yuk.
waves you are so so close! any day now!

LucindaE · 27/07/2013 09:36

Feekerry Poor you, gentle pats on offer.
Sally That is ridiculous - I think you should complain, not now, when it is all you can do to get through each day, but later, so that some sort of protocol is followed for women with Hyperemesis. Poor you, the idea of a hamper with meat contents when one is feeling nauseous is [green].
(Clucks about anxiously).
Hope Everyone is just about managing.

The stress and heat have got me... Can't stop being sick this morning. Plus upset stomach. So exhausted.

Oh, and DD has chicken pox. Though that means I don't have to force myself out of the house, except to get more ViraSoothe and calpol!

Seriously, this week has SUCKED.

LucindaE · 27/07/2013 10:58

RNJ Oh no! Poor LO, but poor, poor you. Sad. Really feel for you.
Fate seems to be being extra nasty to everyone with Hyperemesis recently...

Puking a bit more recently, ketones up to 3+, feeling a bit sorry for myself. Scan on Monday, which is something to look forward to.

Hugs to everyone xxx

LucindaE · 27/07/2013 13:19

Jenpatnim Oh no, 3+ is the level at which you need admission for IV, unfortunately. Is there any chance of getting liquids to stay put or is the puking so bad you'll have to go in to get those ketones down?

I don't know, I am going to try to keep drinking and eating as much as I can.

Sally8655 · 27/07/2013 16:29

Lucinda- I will totally complain when I'm better.

Jen- I hope you feel better soon, sometimes a bit of chilled juice stays down better than water.

I'm so far having a much better day. I've been able to sit in my living room for a few hours for the first time in months. It's so nice to get out of my bedroom and bed without it being for a hospital appointment.
Still can't eat or drink much but have managed a couple bites of pasta! Yay. It tasted disgusting but kept if down!

feekerry · 27/07/2013 18:37

i second some juice, try orange or apple juice. i cannot keep water down. its just makes me really sick. i have had success with sipping ice cold orange juice. i know its not as good for you as water and contains alot of sugar but its better than nothing!

i look about 35 weeks pregnant. its unbelievable. my stomach muscles seem to have desserted me 2nd time round and the bump is well and truly showing. coupled with losing so much weight its sooooooo obvious i am preggers now!
