Blood sugar still rising. 12.2 now. Shit. :(

Took another 4u novo (correction total now 13u novo!) and off for a brisk walk round the block now

RueDeWakening · 13/06/2013 22:36

Be careful not to overdo the corrections - it's hard but maybe be patient before giving any more. How long does Novo normally work for you? For me it's about 3 hours, so some may still be active and bringing your BS down.

Hope it's down soon!

Gingerbreadpixie · 13/06/2013 23:13

Thanks Rue. I've just come back from a long brisk walk and I'm down to 11. Novo usually starts to work within 30 mins and peaks at 2 hours for me (though takes longer in the morning). I know I was a bit heavy handed with the corrections but I find it easier to correct t a low than a high. I'll just have to set a couple of night time alarms to check how I'm doing. I'm really upset that my previously perfect dinner ratios are now up shit creek and I'm not sure where I am with them. Gonna have to lay off the carbs in my evening meal too.

Hopingforno2 · 13/06/2013 23:59

Im struggling now too i cant find a def pattern to the high n lows tho :( i upped my levemir morning and night and its a bit better but i went to bed at 5.5 last night and at 5 am was 14.5!!! Sad

Gingerbreadpixie · 14/06/2013 00:27

Hi hopingfor. Sorry you're still struggling too. It's bloody exhausting sometimes isn't it? Have you been writing out all your carbs and insulin on a chart, DAFNE-style? I don't do it usually but might have to now to spot where I'm going wrong. It's sometimes easier when it's all written out in front of you.

It's now been 2 hours since my last correction and my sugars are 7.3. So I haven't plummeted quite like I expected. Will test again in an hour though and have a glass of sugary drink on the bedside. We only have cola annoyingly and I could do without the caffeine. Must stock up on lemonade or orange juice instead. I've gone right off lucozade

BonaDea · 14/06/2013 06:17

Gingerbread - annoying about that high! I had to keep increasing my ratios until DS was actually born. I knew I would have to take more insulin but had t guessed how much more it would end up being. Evening is a tricky time, too, because there isn't usually much long acting kicking about to help (assuming you are on a split dose of Levemir).

Incidentally I sometimes like milk as a night time hypo treatment. You need to drink quite a lot but it is so much more gentle than fizzy drinks or oj.

SpottyTeacakes · 14/06/2013 07:01

I always got told off for having milkshake because it takes longer to be absorbed?

Mars milkshakes were my pregnancy addiction!

Hopingforno2 · 14/06/2013 08:35

Same prob this morning, was 5.8 at 11.30pm by 2.30am 13.7 took correction by 8.30 14.7!!!! I think i will need to chase up that consultant appt Sad

Gingerbreadpixie · 14/06/2013 10:26

Blimey hopingfor! Maybe crank up your night Levemir? Have you managed to bring it down now?

Spotty and Bona - I would much rather have milk/milkshake in the night. Would definitely be easier on the heartburn than juice or something fizzy.

I did have a fairly mild hypo at 3am. I don't think it was the novorapid that did that. Think it's because I added a little extra Levemir. Corrected with a little bit of cola and a handful of raisins. Going to use raisins more as a hypo treatment I think.

6.5 this morning. I'm happy with that. Just wish I hadn't been up testing through the night in anticipation of hypo though.

hellbunny1 · 14/06/2013 18:17

Thanks ladies, sorry i'm slow to reply, my phone is being awkward and its a rare occasion i get time on the laptop! The one thing which seems to work for me and i'm sticking with is nutella on burgen toast, its soooo nice! Yesterdays dinner was better, i waited 20minutes and my 1hour reading was 7.3, followed by a hobnob biscuit to stop the drop!

6.5 i would be happy with Gingerbread, i'm told to keep my fasting under 5mmol but with the dawn phen is is absolutley impossible for me on injections to get lower than 6! Last 2 mornings i've woken with 9's so i need to get that sorted tonight, i've upped my levemir too so hopefully that will bring it down a little bit.

I hope everyone and those who's babies are here now are all doing well, i'm 28 weeks today, so officially 10 weeks left til he gets evicted! Really can't wait, i keep saying to OH i will be glad when i'm on the induction ward! I said that last time but once i was there.. Lol!

Growth scan is tuesday, scared incase he is huge aleady, fingers crossed! x

BonaDea · 14/06/2013 21:31

Hoping - it sounds to me that you need to increase night time
Levemir. You shouldn't be rising so much over night (and I think you have already ruled out going low and bouncing back). With levemir I increase by two units at a time. Try it and see what happens - with night time doses you should check at 2am to make sure you have not hypoed.

Hell- how exciting! Re growth scans, take them with a pinch of salt. ALL of us on this thread had babies under the projected weight. In my case my last growth scan at 36 weeks indicated DS would be nudging 9lbs when born at 38 weeks. He was 7lbs 11!! If your control has been decent your baby is likely to be normal size and just fine!

BonaDea · 14/06/2013 21:34

Ps ginger and hell - mornings were awful for me. I ended up taking a regular correction dose at 3 am when I got up to pee. I couldn't increase lev any more as I hypo'd earlier in the night, but with a couple of units of novo at 3-ish I could stave off the worst of the dawn p.

SpottyTeacakes · 15/06/2013 09:46

It's my birthday today and I'm celebrating with another blocked duct Sad

dieciocho · 15/06/2013 11:15

Oh spotty, you poor sausage. Here're some Flowers for you.

Hmm, not sure about milkshake; only had one in my whole life (was brought up by lentil-and-brown-rice-munching-parents! Who I adore, btw).
I think the chocolatey ones look yummy though.

Urgh, 5.5 at 01:00, 16.3 at 06:30 - wtf! Liver dump?

Big news here - V's given up on the breast shields, so I finally feel more "normal".

BonaDea · 15/06/2013 14:55

I find plain old milk perfectly good!

Diec - surely a liver dump?! Do you have a hypo hangover?

And: woo hoo re nipple shields. What a relief after all this time. I remember feeling the same when I was able to feed without applying thrush treatment to me and T each time and I only had to do that for 3 or 4 weeks!

SpottyTeacakes · 15/06/2013 14:59

Diec that's really good news Smile

hello ladies, new to this thread but struggling to get my insulin ratios right so thought i'd join in!

Found out I was pregnant last Monday and according to my hormone levels I'm between 12-16 weeks. Thankfully I had been going to a preconception clinic so my last hb1 was 7 but just got back from a holiday to America with 10 of our friends where we drank most days and ate absolute crap the whole time! Had no indication I was pregnant apart from some spotting rather than periods but the tests I did before we left were all negative so decided to relax a bit - really wish I hadn't now!! Saw the diabetic nurses the day after my positive test and they seem to think I shouldn't worry too much but waiting until we see our scan on Wednesday before telling our friends and extended family.

My sugar levels aren't too far off the targets I've been given but I'm really struggling with my levels one hour after eating. Was told to aim for a rise of 1.5, at the moment they're going up about 5 or so, if not more. But if I take more insulin I get hypos and at the moment they are usually back to the target range within a few hours. Also having hypos in the middle of the night (even before I was pregnant I would have hypos in the middle of the night but they're every night now rather than once or twice a month). Any suggestions of what I can try until I see the midwife?

SpottyTeacakes · 15/06/2013 18:26

Welcome mrssmith Congratulations :)

Firstly neither of my dc were planned and they've turned out fine (rocky starts but I think that's just my body).

What insulin are you on? Have you considered injecting maybe 20 minutes before eating? What are your fasting levels like? What background insulin are you on and do you split it? I'm not as good as the other ladies' on this thread so I'm sure they will be able to help!

Have you tried a complete fasting day to see what happens? (Easier said than done!)

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 15/06/2013 18:58

I'm thinking you might need to reduce your background (levemir?) and up your ratios

OP posts:
BonaDea · 15/06/2013 20:31

Congrats mrs and welcome to the thread.

Getting to those post meal targets is basically impossible unless you eat low carb. So, my suggestion is that you either inject quite some time before a meal so that the novo is well and truly working by the time you eat OR factor in a snack after your meal to prevent the hypo! I ended up doing a combination of these things and managed ok.

Hopingforno2 · 15/06/2013 22:08

mrs basically what bona said tho my consultant during my pregnancy decided that i wasnt to test till at least 2 hours post meal and that i hadnt to do that all the time as i ended up chasing my tail id corect a high then end up hypo then have a high following that and correct again. My 1st dc was not planeed and he is 5 now Smile

Right im still really struggling this cold is still hanging around and i now have toothache too Sad so im reg hitting 14-16 which i correct or hitting lows which are now not so easy to treat ie i either go really high after it or stay low i have upped both my day and night levemir but doubt im going to be able to sort things till this cold and toothache p**s off feeling sorry for myself and having i hate being me day. So an example today i had breakfast late bg was 8.4 (had been 5.9 cpl hours prev) took like 2u extra with it was 16.3 around 90 mins later so took 6u and by lunch was 7.5 took a little extra as was out for lunch and hypo 2.7 an hour later treated that was in cinema so couldnt recheck till later was 16.5!! Took 6u was still 13.4 90 mins later im constantly
feeling so rough i just cannot work out whats going on! Sorry it ranty but i guess you ladies are the only ppl who can truly understand.

dieciocho · 16/06/2013 08:46

Welcome and congrarulations mrs
I suffered with early morning hypos for years - the only thing is to wake up and test in the middle of the night. Horrible, I know, but...

Oh hoping, poor you.

Anothermrssmith · 16/06/2013 10:56

Thanks ladies, a lot of what you're saying makes sense, like making sure I have my injection before eating rather than what I do now which is taking it as soon as I've eaten. Typically today I've had my breakfast and on doing my 1 hour test it's just gone up 2. Will let you know how I get on

hellbunny1 · 16/06/2013 17:08

Congrats Mrssmith! this is a great thread so post/update as much as you can whether its just a ramble about readings or anything, i've not come accross a more helpful place yet for pregnancy and i'm on my third now :P

I'm struggling with post meal readings (evening/dinner meals) it seems the only thing i can eat is burgen bread with either tuna, cheese filler or nutella/peanut butter, its SO boring :( and i'm hungry, do you all have any suggestions with what meals worked? Eggs are making me nauseas aswell, i don't think i can manage another egg.

Need to up the levemir again, woke at 8.9 this morning, seem to have mastered the breakfast though so thats a start!
Thanks for the advice for the growth scan, i'm guessing they will say he's a big one, my readings haven't been so great this time round, i feel guilty for this :( xxx

hellbunny1 · 16/06/2013 17:22

Bona thanks for that, i'm going to increase tonight and check at 2ish, if i start heading down i guess i will try the novorapid in the early hours, its all trial and error isn't it! Spotty i hope the pain eases for you, a belated happy birthday though despite the blocked duct! Flowers
Hopingforno2 i hope you get better soon, its so annoying when the sugars are all over the place for a rotten cold, i feel like saying something when people sneeze near me/bring their ill kids near us.. that when we get something even if its "only a cold" it plays havoc with us and causes us so much hassle!

Got a 12.9 after evening meal, grrr! I'm not even high carbing either :( i probably have around 100g a day so its driving me mad with these levels, i was in a rush and didn't wait half a hour before eating after injecting as my 1 year old was crying and i was trying to just shove it down me! x
