Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha - oh my god, I've fallen off my chair rue Hmm

hellbunny1 · 11/06/2013 18:06

Hello everyone, i'm new to this site, i found it amongst a google search Smile

I'm expecting my third baby, i've had type 1 for 3 years, diagnosed in my first pregnancy would you believe it Shock

I'm 28 weeks on friday, and have my growth scan next tuesday. I've had alot of high levels this time round, my first two babies were 8lb 6oz and 7lb 1oz, but i'm seriously doubting this one will be normal sized!!

I've not had a hba1c yet this time (well i went to have it done but the lady couldn't get sufficient blood due to my veins being weird!) so i need to go back soon and try again, hba1c was 5.9 before pregnancy though so fairly controlled then, but since becoming pregnant my levels have just gone crazy! 10 weeks to go til i'm induced and i can't wait, i feel guilty all the time when my numbers are high, does anyone else feel the same?

SpottyTeacakes · 11/06/2013 18:10

Welcome hellbunny. I have to say we have all popped now but we are keeping the thread going! When is it that you're going high? Is there any pattern? I think you're entering the third trimester now and (as you probably know) your insulin requirements are going to take a steep incline (unless you're me then they will drop Wink)

hellbunny1 · 11/06/2013 18:22

Funnily enough i've had to reduce my basal a little, but they said its due to the warmer weather which i guess makes sense! I'm struggling abit with my evening meal, breakfast my 1hour reading is 7 (then comes down abit) lunch is similar but dinner i'm always hovering around 10-12 (which comes down by 2 hours)
xx

SpottyTeacakes · 11/06/2013 18:43

Are you on levemir? Are you splitting your dose? If you have a pump I have no idea but rue is an expert Smile

OP posts:
hellbunny1 · 11/06/2013 19:11

I'm on levemir, only once at night as i've never needed to split (i do seem quite sensitive to insulin except for when i'm resistant to the novorapid/meal time in pregnancy) i've done a fast day a couple of weeks back, and my levels stay steady (around the 5mmol mark) so i don't think its running out, the only thing which works is when i have a piece of toast with burgen bread with chocolate spread on lol, i should probably just stick with that if it works! xx

RueDeWakening · 11/06/2013 20:17

Welcome hellbunny :) it sounds like your evening ratio has changed to me, what happens if you up your novo in the evening? Or go old fashioned and give your bolus 20-30 minutes before the meal (like you used to have to do with actrapid and other old style insulins). I ended up doing this for breakfast, it means you have to plan what you're eating and have enough time to actually eat it, but it did work pretty well for me. And yet my consultant insisted it was unnecessary, as novo starts working pretty much immediately.

My DC3 is now nearly 4 weeks old, I have to say I found this PG the hardest re controlling levels etc - evidenced by the fact that he was 10lbs 8oz Shock the heaviest by far. It's difficult to concentrate on yourself though with 2 others to chase around after - how old are your other DCs? Mine are 6 and 3.

Hopingforno2 · 11/06/2013 21:05

Welcome hellbunny all the ladies on here are very nice and more often than not more helpful than the profs lol

Well i didnt have anything done today, the consultant was very curt tho didnt feel i could ask questions i was in his office for all of 5 mins! He looked at my eyes (no pics done) said you have diabetics changes they are minimal then mentioned the central vision and said id to be checked in 4-5 months again. What would you take from that?Confused

SpottyTeacakes · 11/06/2013 21:14

I'd say they're not worried hoping. My eye person said to wait six months postnatal to go to the opticians as things should have settled down by then so maybe he's waiting to see what happens?

Hopingforno2 · 11/06/2013 21:24

Thanks spotty im hoping thats what it is. Was a bizzare experience the nurse took my eye pressures too so has numbing drops in very strange!!

dieciocho · 12/06/2013 07:18

Welcome bunny
It could be a ratio change or maybe your Levemir is running out. It doesn't last 24hrs.

Weird hoping, but agree with spotty - they're not worried.

Hopingforno2 · 12/06/2013 08:30

Yes bunny i was changed to levemir purely for the splitting whilst pregnant and its likely you need more rapid too. Dont get too hung up on what weight they say at the scan (easier said than done i know) if mine had been right dd would have been around 10lbs when born but was only 8lbs 6.5oz not even a full pound heavier than ds he was 7lbs 14.5oz

Hopingforno2 · 12/06/2013 08:33

diec yes im supposing that i would have been treated if it was but obv not great as havent been sent back to regular screening either? I forgot i did manage one question i asked if it would improve as things(hopefully) settle now and he said yes so really hope they have next time.

Gingerbreadpixie · 12/06/2013 09:34

Hi, all. Is anyone in this thread still pregnant and having a nightmare with bg? Or can help advise with mine? I've just had an awful night and now can't stop crying. Had mashed potato with dinner last night, I'm 29 weeks and injected 2:1 as I have been and had a spike of around 12 that lasted 3 hours. I was frantically trying to get it back down, ended up over correcting in desperation and hypo'd at 3am. I was blood testing every hour on the hour last night because I knew the hypo was coming and even after it because i knew id also over orrected the hypo (I wasn't coming out if it fast enough) So I'm exhausted, stressed and don't know what I'm doing anymore after 2 trimesters of good control. Help? :(

Hopingforno2 · 12/06/2013 09:56

Oh ginger the joys of 3rd trimester is it always after dinner?? If so mayabe you need more at that point??

Gingerbreadpixie · 12/06/2013 10:13

Hi Hopingfor, bless you for replying!

Usually breakfast is my nemesis but I seem to have got that one under control now by injecting 45 mins before I eat it and having a small 10-15g carb snack an hour after I've eaten.

Lunch is rarely a problem.

Dinner is totally dependnt on what I eat. We usually eat fairly low-carb with bulgar wheat, couscous, basmati rice etc making up the carb portion. Though DH has been making the same sausage and homemade cheese-mash dinner around once a week through this pg and i give a 2:1 ratio for that. Last night I actually injected a little more novo than usual because I thought I'd have some dessert afterwards. I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn't checked bg before dessert (which I didn't have).

I guess this is third trimester insulin resistance???

Hopingforno2 · 12/06/2013 12:03

Sure sounds like it lol i had it at weeks 30-34 then my needs dipped a little so was in twice a week for checks after that. All you can do is take more then n check to see what effect it has rubbish isnt it in all honesty i feel im still having to do it alot as im so up n down

Gingerbreadpixie · 12/06/2013 12:07

Thanks Hopingfor. As we've spoken about before, it's just that panic of seeing those high numbers when you test and imagining it doing all sorts of harm to poor little bub! That and the lack of sleep with night testing

Gingerbreadpixie · 13/06/2013 11:14

Can I ask all T1 new mums and those still pregnant, did you have the WC vaccine between weeks 28-38? Was all ok? Did any get a reaction that affected their bg levels? Thanks xx

SpottyTeacakes · 13/06/2013 11:21

I had it and it was fine Smile

Gingerbreadpixie · 13/06/2013 12:51

Thanks Spotty x

hellbunny1 · 13/06/2013 13:57

Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes! :) i've been having a read through the threads on here and i feel more relieved, lots of nice outcomes etc, because i'm a worrier and need reassurance. Ratios have all gone out the window again, This morning i had 14 units for 2 pieces of burgen toast with cheese, 1 hour later 10.5.. it came down and i hypod.. and now its 11.7! So corrected that and hoping it will drop soon. I think i just really need to keep increasing, but when i see double figures it really upsets me!
Really hope tomorrows readings will be better.
My two kids are 13 months and 2 years 10 months, so i will have 3 under 3 lol! Its so difficult trying to balance highs/lows and also trying to do my best with them also, it seems when my levels are normal i will drop which makes me anxious around my kids (incase i hypo) and when they are high its not good for baby.. and i know they put the weight on mainly after 28 weeks so i really need to get these readings right. The only thing which is keeping me positive is i was actually diagnosed type 1 in my first pregnancy, at 34 weeks though i'd had it for at least 10 weeks prior to being diagnosed as my midwife appts were always ++++ glucose in my urine, and when i had the GTT done it came back at 26mmol! Amazingly he was fine and 8lb 6oz at birth (39 weeks) no idea how he wasn't 20lbs really lol.

Gingerbread i've had a letter through, though i've not had an appointment booked for me yet, i think i will definitley get it done though! x

Gingerbreadpixie · 13/06/2013 15:21

Hi hellbunny. Don't know if you've considered it but I have started injecting earlier for my breakfast to try to combat the peak an hour after eating. I was getting 10-11 bg readings an hour after breakfast every day before this. I just gradually moved my injection time earlier by 5 mins at a time until I hit the right balance. I seem to be doing better now. Though I have a little snack an hour after breakfast to prevent a hypo too!

Btw I did a really silly thing last night. i blood tested a few hours after dinner and managed to get a reading of 15.8. Went into total panic mode as I was sure I'd covered my food properly with my novorapid. It turned out I still had a little bit of jam from a jam tart on my blood testing finger and my true reading was actually 7! Of course I'd corrected and had to snack to compensate and was all a big faff. Morale if the story - always make sure there isnt any jam anywhere near you when you blood test!

BonaDea · 13/06/2013 21:21

Just a quick note from me to welcome hell bunny and gingerbread. It's nice to see some new folks on our thread!!

I definitely got a lot of support from this thread while trying to keep things on an even keel during pregnancy. We all got there in the end and all have happy healthy babies, so I guess I just wanted to say - it is hard, but doable and completely worth the stress! Ask anything or just have a moan about stupid diabetes.

Gingerbreadpixie · 13/06/2013 22:02

Thanks BonaDea. I'm currently struggling with a bg of 11.7. I'll have to put my dinner ratio up for sure now as that's the second time this week that's happened. How frustrating. Will drink lots of water and just took a 5u correction (on top of a 4u correction that did nothing). Have upped my levemir too in the hope that pulls it back down. I had an hba1c of 5.8 in first trimester and 5.6 in second. Gonna be a different ball game in third tri though I think...
