12 week scan looks like twins but sonographer didn't pick up on it?????

Hi I'm new to this forum and just wanted to come on here because I'm pretty lost. I'm 13 weeks pregnant and had my scan 1 week ago and it wasn't a nice experience! I was an hour later than the appointment time because they forgot about me and started to pack up! I was in pain from being so desperate for the toilet so the scan was uncomfortable. Anyway the sonographer was struggling to get an image and I was in and out fairly quick. What I wanted to know was on the scan there's the shape of a second head by the other baby's feel and what could be a foot by the baby's head. Very clear but fainter than the baby we were all looking at in the scan. If its so obvious could it just be coincidental as it looks to obvious for the sonographer to miss it or has this happened to anyone else? I have an already large bump that i can't hide which is making me more panicked! Please help its really consuming all my thoughts and I'm becoming obsessed! Thank you xxx

I've had a look and with my experience as pregnant 5 x I'd say what you think is an extra head is the baby's femurs with the legs bent at the knees and you can't see the lower legs because they're out of sight iyswim, and the extra foot is the baby's arm up near its head. Beautiful looking little tyke you have there. Congratulations!

juneybean · 16/01/2013 22:33

In hecate's edit, the "head" by the feet looks straight on? Confused

5madthings · 16/01/2013 22:40

What duchess said :)

Congratulations :)

Oooh, I love looking at scan pictures!

I have twins, my first scan very clearly showed two little circles sitting next to each other (heads).

Also you will be measuring further along if it's twins, of course.

Because multiples are classified as higher risk, sonographers will be all over the slightest hint that there may be more than one baby. I can't imagine your sonographer wouldn't bother investigating further if they suspected twins, no matter how late they were running.

Looks like just the one to me. Congratulations! Thanks

That definitely looks like another baby. If you are bigger for your dates as well I would get a second opinion and maybe go for a scan elsewhere as it sounds like you had a bad experience. Your first scan is an anxious time anyway so the sonographer should have put you at ease.

Having enlarged the photo, I can see what you mean. But I think it's that trick when the human brain is programmed to make shadows/patterns into a human face. So even though it looks like a face, it doesn't look like a baby.

Branleuse · 17/01/2013 06:58

it looks like 1 baby, with a placenta and umbilical cord to me.

Lydia161290 · 17/01/2013 07:04

Wow, I can actually see it! You certainly need to get it checked again.
I just had my 12 week scan the other day and I wish mine had been longer, since it's my first baby.

I'd phone back up, or somewhere else with your worries. You should be happy throughout your pregnancy and they should have done a better job.

lunar1 · 17/01/2013 07:13

I think I'd have to get checked again, couldn't take 8 weeks of wondering!

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 17/01/2013 07:15

Another one who thinks what Duchesse said. Congratulations Smile

Beckimakeup · 17/01/2013 10:32

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to look and post your thoughts. I think now you say it it's just another leg but I'll ring my midwife and talk to her also. Smile

My mum didn't find out until 20 weeks she was expecting twins, but she didn't have a 12 weeks scan. You could see both very clearly though.

Dogsmom · 17/01/2013 12:55

I can see it too but don't think it's another baby, it's too see through and the skull bone would be much whiter.

On my 12 week scan there's a definite face at the bottom too but it's a guy with a goatee and a hat, lol, as someone else said, we're wired to see faces.

stokiemum62 · 17/01/2013 22:26

From one who has done many hundreds of 12 week scans that is 1 baby. Congratulations

Mashoona88 · 14/04/2014 10:49

Hello, I'm wondering if any of you are still out there?! I have a pic id also like an opinion on!

Mashoona88 · 14/04/2014 10:53

Oops, wondering about the blob in the bottom right? I had a trainee doing my internal at 7 weeks (had pain and spotting after recent miscarriage) - she put the probe in the wrong hole!!! Twice!! So I am slightly wondering about her competence.. I'm now 9 weeks and huge and have a funny feeling it's twins, but she didn't say anything at the scan. I was only thinking about a heartbeat (and getting we to keep that probe in the right place!) an only thought to look at the pic yesterday ..

NCISaddict · 14/04/2014 11:01

Probe in the wrong hole? Do you mean she tried to put it up your anus?Shock Or your urethra?

Mashoona88 · 14/04/2014 11:07

Anus. Twice! I kid you not. I screamed 'STOP!' very embarrassingly the first time (waiting room heaving outside must have wondered what was going on!) and the second time I managed a very forceful loud whisper 'PLEASE no!' .. She didn't bat an eyelid or apologise! I wonder if tis a common occurrence?!

Mashoona88 · 14/04/2014 11:13

Anyway I was more wondering whether that little blob could possibly be a twin?! I am probably being silly but I've got a really strong feeling and know its rare for a sonographer to miss multiples.. But we are talking about wandering wand lady here!

Bonnella20 · 14/04/2014 14:25

Sorry I laughed aloud when I read what you wrote about wandering wand lady! Dignity out the window :/ it looks like one baby but it's still early at this stage however normally you would see something but I'm not an expert x

notapizzaeater · 06/05/2014 09:03

Have you had another scan yet to see ?

Martie1 · 06/05/2014 11:42

I can totally see it! I would definitely ask for a second scan or even go private.

willitbe · 06/05/2014 18:31

Mashoona88 - Inside the pregnancy sac, the little bright circle towards the top left is a yolk sac, peanut shape underneath is your baby. I see no other pregnancy sac from this picture, but not sure what you mean by blob in the bottom right sorry.

Were your measurements correct for seven weeks, and did they see a heartbeat?

LackaDAISYcal · 06/05/2014 18:42

It could be loops of the umbilical cord and the foot is the bones of the hand.

Definitely show it to your MW at your next appointment and she'll talk you through it I'm sure.
