12 week scan looks like twins but sonographer didn't pick up on it?????

Hi I'm new to this forum and just wanted to come on here because I'm pretty lost. I'm 13 weeks pregnant and had my scan 1 week ago and it wasn't a nice experience! I was an hour later than the appointment time because they forgot about me and started to pack up! I was in pain from being so desperate for the toilet so the scan was uncomfortable. Anyway the sonographer was struggling to get an image and I was in and out fairly quick. What I wanted to know was on the scan there's the shape of a second head by the other baby's feel and what could be a foot by the baby's head. Very clear but fainter than the baby we were all looking at in the scan. If its so obvious could it just be coincidental as it looks to obvious for the sonographer to miss it or has this happened to anyone else? I have an already large bump that i can't hide which is making me more panicked! Please help its really consuming all my thoughts and I'm becoming obsessed! Thank you xxx

It just looks like 1 to me (it doesn't look anything like my twin scans but that could be down to positioning)

bigkidsdidit · 16/01/2013 20:07

I see what you mean about the head near the foot! I know nothing though. Take it to your GP tomorrow and explain and see what they say

Exciting!

SunbathingintheRain · 16/01/2013 20:07

Can see bigger picture.

To me it looks like the shape of a head by the baby's feet, but in my extremely uninformed opinion it seems to be like an optical illusion? I'd say there's only one.

Congrats BTW :)

McPhee · 16/01/2013 20:07

Are my eyes making me see it?

ChristianGreyIsAJackass · 16/01/2013 20:07

Good grief! It actually does look like another head! It looks nothing like my twin scan but i can see what you mean. I think if only to put your mind at ease i would contact you midwife tomorrow :)

LittleDonkin · 16/01/2013 20:07

I have just looked again and it now looks like the umbilical cord which just happens to look like the outline of a face

HecateWhoopass · 16/01/2013 20:08

I've enlarged the photo and sharpened it a bit and there does look like a shadow of another baby there, but it's almost see through. So I'm thinking no. Not another baby. It's not solid like the baby. So probably just fluid or - is it below the placenta?

But anyway, it's not a second baby, I really don't think. if anything, it looks more like a reflection! Grin

If it was, then it would be the same colour as the one you can see clearly. The same brightness, I should say.

Anyway. I've put the enlarged and enhanced pic on my profile so you can see

Beckimakeup · 16/01/2013 20:09

Thankyou everyone I've decided I'm going to wait for the 20 week scan and like the majority said it probably just one! Feel better now which was my aim when I joined and posted for the first time! I'll be mentioning everything on here from now on! Ha!

meant to say, to me, if anything, it looks face to face.

goodygumdrops · 16/01/2013 20:10

Oh my I can see it now, I don't think there is a second baby, just a bit of a spooky image! Like where you can see things in the clouds. But yes, its very clear! It wouldn't hurt to get it checked ....

mousebacon · 16/01/2013 20:10

Ooh. I see what you mean OP.

Did the sonographer not spend time taking measurements etc? Is that the only image you were given?

I would guess there's only one in there but I think I'd get a second opinion (or private scan) soon just to put my mind at rest. If it is twins you'd need a much higher level of care due to the high risk nature of multiples.

TameGaloot · 16/01/2013 20:11

My guess because of odds of sonographer not seeing it and the type of twin would have to be is that its us seeing a face because we're programmed too
I would ask your mw to set your mind at rest too

hippoCritt · 16/01/2013 20:11

I see what you mean but I'd like t think the sonographer knew what they were doing., do you have anyone you ask?

starjules · 16/01/2013 20:11

I can see that too!!! I would be asking a professional, but yes can see a shadowed seconded image.

Pinot · 16/01/2013 20:12

I've had three babies and, IMO, it's a single baby with either cord or leg looking like a curve of a head.

Congratulations OP Thanks

sillymillyb · 16/01/2013 20:12

Oooh I see it now on Hecates profile - whilst logic says its very unlikely to be another baby, I think I would def mention it to the mw. It would play on my mind now!

VinegarDrinker · 16/01/2013 20:14

I've looked and looked and I still can't see what you lot are on about!

I think it looks more like a cord on hecates

VivaLeBeaver · 16/01/2013 20:19

It's one.

What looks like a nose of a second head is toes. I believe that what's above the toes going upwards is some of the umbilical cord.

FoxSake · 16/01/2013 20:19

Congratulations, I'd say single baby and what you are seeing is the cord plus they are moving all the time so not a still shot. The sonographer with have had a good look at placenta, sac etc and they also look from all angles so would have seen a twin. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

racingheart · 16/01/2013 20:20

See what you mean. That looks so like a head. Not even a ghost of the image of the baby if it turned, as the profile is quite different. I'd definitely want to get it checked out, just to be certain.

Can you ask for another scan? They didn't spot DT2 on my first scan (though that was at 6 weeks, as I was IVF.) Also, on sound scans, they often couldn't find one of the heart beats as one DT kept hiding and the other DT kept zooming up and pushing his chest against the sonic scanner. So they can hide.

It's possible. Put your mind at rest. I wouldn't leave it until 20 weeks because if it is twins you get a lot more medical attention as there are higher chances of difficulties and they really need to keep tabs on BP, anaemia, diabetes etc.

digerd · 16/01/2013 20:55

I too think it is only one baby and the shadows are probably a reflection.
As they did not listen to the heart beat, could your midwife do that next time you see her? Babies that young all have big heads in proportion to the body.
One woman I know, the scans showed no neck or body , then other abnormalities, but was born perfect ??!!

I do see what you mean, but with my twins there were two separate sacs in different places and it was difficult to see them at the same time and one couldn't be seen through the others sac.

But if you are worried talk to midwife to rest your mind
