Can a Clear Blue Digital Pregnancy Test give a false negative?

Right here it goes...

So I was due on 12th July and my periods are normally regular. I had unprotected sex on the 29th June to which I've researched and turns out I was most likely ovulating between 25h-30th June. So this is why I've tested quite early...

I done a test yesterday - Boots own brand and it came back with an unclear result. It had what I could make out to be a very very very faint line. So I decided to take a Clear Blue Digital test today which came back 'Not Pregnant'. However I'm not convinced, as I just feel I might be... If that makes sense to anyone?

Is there any chance or has anyone ever used Clear Blue and been given a false negative?
I'm going to re-test in a few days anyway if my period hasn't come but I just wanted to know if it was possible.

Try using first response or superdrug they're really sensitive. Digi can sometimes be unreliable :)

bery067 · 23/04/2015 18:13

I took 3 pregnancy tests 2 weeks ago (1 clear blue, and 2 cheapie ones) all said positive.

I had one spare clear blue test so I decided to use it today and it said negative...

Is there an explanation for this?
Apart from back aches and some stomach pains I dont think I have had any of the big pregnant symptoms...

MissLaurenxo · 02/05/2015 11:21

Iv been feeling dizzy and light headed tierd moody sore breat and so sick im confused ?? im really hoping for a positive i think i am pregnant but this not pregnant has thrown me

ejclementine · 02/05/2015 23:35

I had a false negative on clearblue last Saturday. Tested positive a couple of days later with 'pregnant' 2-3. Key is to make sure you test with your first morning wee.

Hi I'm 11days late today I have iregular periods but have a calendar to keep my dates down o has sex on few of my days I could get caught took a cheap test 3 days ago had a very very very faint line took another one nothing took a clear blue was negative but when I opened the test up on inside it had very very faint lines on the strips inside but didn't use my first wee can anyone help I'm 32 already have a 12 yr old

ejclementine · 09/05/2015 09:27

Use your first morning wee and check again, but usually a line is a line so it's likely to be positive!

joanneandkalli · 09/05/2015 12:06

Well I did one wiv first response at 4 am this morning and it was negative and I'm 12 days late today and I'm getting bit ov the symptoms like tiredness breast pain wen taking bra off things like that but most r saying negative

joanneandkalli · 09/05/2015 12:08

Hi there, I'm new to this posting malarkey. Similar boat to others on here and I guess just some reassurance would be nice. I miscarried last month (first pregnancy) luckily was only 5 weeks along so only emotional damage. I'd read online and the doctor had said no need to wait for next period if ready to stay trying again - so we did. It's 4 weeks since the MC still no period so I took a tesco test with fmu Thursday morning and got a line - faint but def there. So 2 days later, I took a clear blue digi this afternoon (mostly a dribble really - sorry tmi) and it came up as 'not pregnant' I'm being overly cautious about not getting my hopes up after last month and can't get a docs app until Friday. Any thoughts? Thank you x

Hello potato.

CBD are not all that sensitive and as you didn't use FMU I'm not surprised it was negative. It's still very early days yet you need to be testing with first morning urine.

Anyway, it's unlikely there would still be HCG present a month after a 5 week miscarriage. At that stage HCG would have been so low anyway it should have returned to normal quite quickly. So with that and the fact you have had a positive test recently I would be very surprised if you're not in fact pregnant again now.

I had a miscarriage at about 6 weeks. 4 weeks later I found out I was pregnant again and had conceived 2 weeks after the miscarriage had first started. My DS is now a lovely happy 16mo!

I would take another test with FMU tomorrow. First response are very sensitive and are highly recommended on here so I would opt for one of those.

Best wishes and good luck!

Thanks sarkymare. I know that my hcg levels had already gone back to practically zero when I MC'd and had a negative test then too. So when I got the positive this time I knew it was new but the negative today really threw me. Thanks, I'll test again in the morning although only have a second clear blue in the house atm. It's reassuring to know there are others out there going trough the same. Thanks again will try and update.

sarkymare · 09/05/2015 21:03

A clear blue may show a positive but I wouldn't worry too much if it doesn't. As I say they aren't that sensitive. Just make sure you use first morning urine before any food or drink as HCG will be more concentrated so easier to detect.

p0tato · 10/05/2015 06:58

Tested again first thing this morning and it's come up positive. Must have conceived 2 weeks after mc, very similar to you by the sounds of it. Here's hoping for a healthy, happy ending :) thanks again for the advice sarkymare - it gave me the courage to actually do the test this morning!

curvymumma · 12/05/2015 05:36

This thread is going to save my sanity...
I had a very very faint positive on a first response test on Sunday (mother's day hehe) and then a negative from CB today.
Fingers crossed I can't wait about a week and them test again. I have another CB test in my cabinet though so I may be naughty and use it sooner rather than later. Best to wait but I'm a curious little chicken.

hullywully · 12/05/2015 06:42

I tested 6 days ago and wasn't preg, I then tested 5 days ago and I'm actually 5 weeks preg. You rarely get a false positive! You need to wait until the hormone levels are higher. Chances are you are preg. Grin

hullywully · 12/05/2015 06:44

Curvy- I didn't wait a bloody week. Anyone that can deserves a medal. I took one everyday for the whole time I was due on. I hope you get the result you want. Chances are you are too. GrinGrinGrin

I always remember clear blue digital being accurate really early I'm just so inpatient :/ Help please xx

Rere321 · 21/05/2015 22:07

Hi I'm after some advise. I Was due on my period on the 13th may , I'm usually on really heavy and always on time. This month I bled the smallest amount and have had nothing since. I took a test Yestersay , a tesco digital test 2x. Both came up invalid. Today I brought a clear blue digital and it came up 'not pregnant'. I haven't had any period pains like I usually do. My breasts are not sore and they usually get quiet sore when due on. Is there a likely chance I could be pregnant ? Is it best to test in the morning, as I tested this evening with the clear blue. Thanks in advance x

Fattycow · 22/05/2015 08:12

It is best to test in the morning and not to use a digital test, as those are notorious for being wrong!

Mtris143 · 28/05/2015 13:03

Ladies, this may sound gross but crack the case open and confirm. It's super easy, you'll see control and then either a line or no line.

The test's brains work in a binary fashion. If it sees dark enough line before control it trips the sensor. If the line is too faint it won't trip it. So you still need to do your own assessment.

E10m66 what you have written above is exactly the same as me. Had a m/c 30 days ago. Usually have a 28 day cycle. Sore boobs, bloated, headaches and tiredness. A very faint positive yesterday but 2 negatives since. Now I feel like I am going crazy. Hope you have managed to get an answer to your query.

emilyyyx · 14/06/2015 19:37

Hi was it a early miscarriage or late one? Sorry for both of your losses. Same happened to me I went through an early miscarriage and got pregnant the next month without trying. Some say you are more fertile. With the digital tests they can also provide you with false negatives. With my experience with taking the test apart I wouldn't I have had so many false positives with doing it as when the air gets to it the dye can sometimes become more visible. I would try a first response or a superdrug own in the morning and maybe leave it a few days. Hope this helps you both x
