Hello all... I went for my 20week scan today and everything looks fine ..Hurray!!! :)
I asked about the sex of the baby and the radiographer said it was really difficult to see but she thinks it's a girl ..but she's only 75% certain ..is this certain enough to start buying girly things d'you think? I've heard stories about people being told at the scan they were having a girl and then giving birth to a boy ...anyone got any experience/comments to add?

mate was told she was having a girlie and it was a boysie!

Twiglett · 27/02/2006 20:27

no buy neutral

plenty of time to buy pink after its born .. and all the pressies will no doubt be pink (or blue)

they were definite with both of mine at 20 week scan ..

BettySpaghetti · 27/02/2006 20:48

Although both my scans were "fairly definate" (and subsequently right) I still didn't want to 100% believe them in case they were wrong. Tried to keep a bit of an open mind and certainly didn't go out and buy pink/blue.

On the other hand I know people who have done the works (pink nursery, complete wardrobe of outfits etc) -luckily for them person doing scan was correct but can you imagine if they had been wrong!!?

JanH · 27/02/2006 20:49

Buy white and navy (love navy/navy-and-white babies Grin)

AggiePanther · 27/02/2006 21:36

Thanks for your replies ..yes Jan, I like navy and white too :)

alliebaba ..how certain were they at your friends scan, d'you know?

Anybody else got any experience of this?

I wouldnt on a 75% chance, with ds we bought blue but only because we could see he was a boy before sonographer said so he was definetly male. With DD we didnt know her sex but as soon as we had a girl and people knew the pink items were plentiful.

OldieMum · 27/02/2006 21:39

I had my scan today, too. Erm, it's easier to spot a boy than a girl, IYSWIM. Indeed, in our case it was so obvious that we could tell before the radiographer said a word.

Angeliz · 27/02/2006 21:40

I don't think they'll ever say they're 100% sure as they can't be and they don't want recriminations(sp) afterwards. I had to sign to say i understood they could be wrong.
They tols me a girl and i had a girl but i already had a house full of pink so didn't get much new to waste if they were wrong.
You can but most stuff in white, lemon, beige, navy (i love that too), and then if it's definately a girl, go out nad have a pink daySmile

Congratulations btw, i love girls!!Grin

lunavix · 27/02/2006 21:40

Buy whatever you want and keep the receipts :)

Blu · 27/02/2006 21:54

nah - pink's horrible!

AggiePanther · 27/02/2006 22:28

Yes, I would probably be more convinced if the sonographer had said 'well I can't be 100% sure but I'm pretty sure its a girl' but because she said 'it's really difficult to see but I think its a girl ..I'm 75% sure" then I think perhaps she just couldn't see any 'boy bits' so she assumed it was a girl ...wish I'd asked more questions now.

75% is still quite a low chance. Other friends of mine were told 85-90% chance it was a girl and they were right.

However, I didn't even find out the sex of my dd at a scan but still bought pink stuff (not much, just one "naughty dress" because I fell in love with it) I kept the receipt stapled to the label and kept it hung up in the bag so I could take it back if I had needed to.

With this pregnancy I saw at the scan it was a boy, there was no denying it!! when asked the radiographer said 100% so I've bought blue. Basically though, most shops esp. Next and M & S will take back things even 3 months later with a receipt. Particularly if it is current stock. The question is whether you would feel more sad it was a boy if you had pink clothes etc or whether you wouldn't mind.

vickiyumyum · 28/02/2006 08:46

i was told 75% a girl at my 20 week scan and held off buying anything pink until one day in tescos i couldn't resist a pink sleepsuit with a cat on it, and brought it, i had another scan at 34 weeks (to check growth as having an elective c/s for breech) and was told that it is still a girl so have brought a few more pink things including a caridgan from gap and a couple of sleepsuits from mothercare, but tbh i have left them all in their packets just in case dh has to take them back and swap for blue.

vickiyumyum · 28/02/2006 08:48

ooh! forgot to say, waht was your gut feeling before the scan? i beleive that mums who have a strong feeling of what sex the baby is are usually right! both my previous 2 i knew they were boys and they were, this one i felt is a girl and they said so at the scan so we will find out 2 weeks on thursday!

Vicki - my gut feeling before the scan was that I was having a boy ...perhaps because I have a DD already..I was even calling the bump Alfie I was that convinced ...I'll be perfectly happy either way though :)
Kayzed, I'm booked in for a 4d scan at the end of April - so I guess we'll find out for definite then ...hockeymum ..I think I may well do the same- hold off unless I see a dress that I fall in love with.

a colleague of mine told everyone she was having a girl (including her class at school - she was the teacher)so they all bought cute little girly outfits for her then....she had a boy! Shock Grin

Stick to white and neutral - as Twiglett said, everyone will buy you pink things if it's a girl anyway.

DissLocated · 28/02/2006 09:32

We were told dd was a girl at the 20 weeks scan but we hedged our bets and still bought neutral stuff. As it turned out they were right but I wouldn't rely on it. As others have said you'll get loads of pink prezzies anyway.

Enid · 28/02/2006 09:35

I have bought nothing for my new baby!

why on earth are you all rushing out and buying stuff?

AggiePanther · 28/02/2006 09:44

Hi Enid, I'm not actually rushing out and buying anything - 'should I buy pink yet?' was really my way of asking for people's experiences of how accurate scans are :)
Mind you I have been collecting things that people are giving away - already have a pram and a baby swing.

izzybiz · 28/02/2006 10:28

i was told i was having a girl, i couldnt resist a few things, like pink socks and a vest or two!
i wouldnt get too carried away though, just in case.
mine was right by the way!Smile

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 28/02/2006 10:30

95% certian at scan I was having a girl - I had a boy.

AggiePanther · 28/02/2006 10:48

Really Tamba?? Had you thought of boys names/ bought neutral stuff etc just in case or was it a total shock?

OP posts:
MerlinsBeard · 28/02/2006 10:53

couldn't see with the first so bought yellows and citrusy type colours. Was a boy.

I was convinced my second was a girl so much so that when they said 100% boy and i saw a willy on screen i didn't believe them!! Was a boy
