Hello all... I went for my 20week scan today and everything looks fine ..Hurray!!! :)
I asked about the sex of the baby and the radiographer said it was really difficult to see but she thinks it's a girl ..but she's only 75% certain ..is this certain enough to start buying girly things d'you think? I've heard stories about people being told at the scan they were having a girl and then giving birth to a boy ...anyone got any experience/comments to add?

I know someone who was told on 4 scans girl and all wrong!!

They were right for my ds2 though. Although I would have liked a girl initially I bonded with him and would have been pretty upset if they had been wrong in the end. For that reason I would not find out if I had anymore.

AggiePanther · 02/03/2006 21:07

Blimey rebecca ...that must've been a shock ...from what people have said on this thread, if they say its a boy they're usually pretty certain...just goes to show they can be wrong:) Now..who was it on here who was asking if they could have been wrong about her scan..hang on I'll check...ah yes DunnyJo ..thereyou go DunnyJo ...they can make mistakes that way round too :)

Soupdragon - if your DD has 2 older brothers she might turn out to be a tomboy! I had older brothers and never played with a girlie toy in my life.
I have a DS and when they told me the sex on his scan they said they were 100% certain. This time they've told me they think it's a girl but keep any receipts if i buy anything! I don't really mind pink but hate frilly dresses!! And don't get me going on barbie...

sniff · 03/03/2006 09:28

baby bond is £75 and they say they can predict with accuracy 99% the sex of your baby I keep going to make an appointment then chickening out!!!

Paddy clamp there seems to be so much more choice out there for girls though all the boys stuff is exactly the same as I already have e.g I am now buying thomas stuff all over again and sitting through the DVDs again !!!

AggiePanther · 03/03/2006 11:04

Sniff..is it a type of scan ? I'm going for a 4d one at the end of april ..so should know then :)

yeah its the name of a company that does 4D scans but this is purely to tell the sex you pay more for everything else

best of luck with your scan

IssyLu · 03/03/2006 15:45

When I had my scan they said they were 95% sure it was a girl - that was good enough for us. We ran out and bought louds of pink. Then after she was born I thought pink didn't suit her. So then spent the next few months trying to find other colours i.e pale aqua, cream, navy etc but all the shops had only pink pink pink!! Good luck with the 4d scan - if I had another I would definately have one!

Bought some cute bootees (cos they were in the sale) but they're like little bears so could be for either girl or boy :)

I was told I was having a girl and had a boy. My family had bought some pink things already. I took them back to the shop and the girl allowed me to change them (even though they were past the exchange date), due to circumstances.

AggiePanther · 03/03/2006 19:32

Hi salsa ...did they say how certain they were when they told you?

OP posts:
lucyhoneybee · 03/03/2006 19:42

I hate to be a naysayer but lots of you are talking about taking stuff back if it's wrong sex- shops don't have to take it back and most won't, unless it's faulty AND within a certain time, usually 28 days after purchase- so resist that urge to splurge unless you really will dress him in pink, or all your friends are preggers!

AggiePanther · 03/03/2006 19:44

But lucyhoneybee what I really want to know is not should I buy stuff and whether I can take it back ...but how accurate 20wk scans are Grin

salsa · 03/03/2006 20:36

Aggiepanther she said 100%. You can imagine the shock!

salsa · 03/03/2006 20:38

When I was preganant with DD, I was asked if I wanted to know and I said no as last time it was wrong. This time they said again that they were 100% and this time they were right but I didn't tell anyone and didn't get set on a name or anything just in case.
I think it is just best to wait.

AggiePanther · 04/03/2006 09:42

Eek! 100% ..blimey ..so my 75% is definitely not gambling odds

I had a little boy on 13th Feb - we knew he was a he at the 20-week scan because he wasn't shy about showing his bits! Had another scan to check placenta at 32 weeks and the sonographer asked me if I wanted her to check the sex and then said "well, there's no doubt you have a little man in there!" Wierd thing was, I was convinced I was carrying a girl. Took me a couple of weeks to get my head around having a boy. Of course, by the time he arrived, I couldn't imagine having anything else - he's gorgeous!

AggiePanther · 05/03/2006 09:58

Congrats Sharon :)

Hi there, just had my 20 wk scan and was told we are having a little girl. My mum works teaching medical students and a doctor colleague agreed after seeing the scan pictures, on an abdomen shot he could see two black dots which he said were her ovaries. Hope everyone is right as you very soon get used to the idea of one or the other. We're quite settled on the idea of having a baby Florence!

tweeni · 05/03/2006 14:44

unless she said for definite i wouldn't

root · 05/03/2006 15:33

why not buy pink, blue, red, green, white, brown...who cares what sex the baby is? do we have to start conditioning our children before birth?!

YeahBut · 05/03/2006 16:02

I was told I was having a girl at my 20 week scan. I now have a 6 week old boy (that I love to bits)! Smile

AggiePanther · 05/03/2006 16:28

root ..the point of the thread is really 'how accurate was your scan' ..should I buy pink yet was just my way of asking, but if you read the thread you'll see its nothing to do with conditioning children :)

Yeahbut - did they say how sure they were at your scan?

OP posts:
mojomummy · 05/03/2006 16:47

yes of course buy pink/lilac if you want ! that's the whole point of baby girls Grin

We found out DD was a girl & I discovered the NCT sales in a big way.

FWIW I dressed her at 8 weeks old in a turquoise cotton romper suit with frill trim & I was asked what HIS name is ! I said, she's a girl & was told, well I just saw blue.

mojomummy · 05/03/2006 16:49

PS My scan was private & she took great care & attention to confirm the sex. I was desperate for a girl & it took a week to sink in. I'm pretty sure she was a 100% certain - I couldn't see what was what, so had no idea.
