Hello all... I went for my 20week scan today and everything looks fine ..Hurray!!! :)
I asked about the sex of the baby and the radiographer said it was really difficult to see but she thinks it's a girl ..but she's only 75% certain ..is this certain enough to start buying girly things d'you think? I've heard stories about people being told at the scan they were having a girl and then giving birth to a boy ...anyone got any experience/comments to add?

We had a girls name picked and tons of pink clothes!

sniff · 28/02/2006 11:03

mine said it was a girl at 20 weeks but they were only allowed to say they were 75% accurate we have bought girl things I must admit but I am getting scared off getting to used to having a girl incase its not

I already have 2 boys and it looked nothing like they did on the scan it had 3 little white lines between its legs

Annie29 · 28/02/2006 11:16

Hi Aggie!
I was convinced my first was a girl, but when I saw the 14 week scan, I quickly changed my mind! Then an amnio confirmed it was a boy.
This time, I had no amnio (thankfully!) but I was convinced it was another boy. I had my 20 week scan last Friday and the sonographer said it's a girl, he was convinced. Maybe if he was only 75% sure then there's always a chance he could be wrong, but it's usually fairly obvious if it's a boy!! I hope you get what you want! It's very hard to turn it around in your head when you think it's one and it turns out to be the other, so I'm glad I know now and not wait til the birth to find out! And if you buy neutral now, you can be sure all your prezzie will be pink (or blue, but probably pink!)
Good luck!! Smile

AggiePanther · 28/02/2006 11:26

Yes I think I'd rather she'd said 'sorry I can't tell' than say she's '75% sure' when you can be 50% sure without a scan!

sniff ..I'm amazed you could see 3 little white lines...this little one was flipping about so much I had trouble seeing the legs let alone what was between them :)

Ugh - don't buy pink at all, it's horrid! :o

AggiePanther · 28/02/2006 11:37

Awww surely you can't object to a very pale baby pink :)

Dunnyjo · 28/02/2006 11:43

I know this might sound a bit daft but i had a 20wk sacn and when i asked the sex she said 'telling by that' 'hotdog' sort of words she was not alloud to say lol but before i had the scan i was so sure in my self it is a girl. Blush but could she have still got it wrong? I already have a boy (dont get me wrong i will still be hapy, have a name already!) but is there just that chance it could have been the cord or something.....

AggiePanther · 28/02/2006 12:06

I think if they say its a boy then they're pretty definite..I guess the cord could be obscuring the 'boy bits' but I don't think they'd mistake the cord ...I'm no expert but surely the cord is much bigger?

AggiePanther · 28/02/2006 13:27

Meant to add dunnyjo ..don't think its a daft question at all...when you feel you 'know' what the sex is ..its areally strong feeling

SoupDragon · 28/02/2006 13:33

Oh, I certainly can object to pale baby pink, AggiePanther. Pink is my least favourite colour. Which is a sham given that I@ve just had a girl after 2 boys...

Allegedly, they can say boy when they mean girl because the labia can look like testicles (exactly how I'm not sure!). Anyway, they were right with DD.

FWIW, I was convinced both DSs were girls and was clearly wrong both times!!

AggiePanther · 28/02/2006 13:38

Soupdragon ..you sound like my sil ..absolutely hates pink but her dd has turned out to be a really 'girly girl' who is desperate for a pink bedroom ...I think they managed to compromise on lilac :)

P0SSUM · 28/02/2006 13:43

i wouldnt buy anything. you'll get heaps andheaps of clothes. i still have lots of unused stuff because i bought lots of girly stuff (scan was correct)

sniff · 28/02/2006 16:02

you could definatly tell with both the boys they were boys anyone could tell didnt look like a cord looked exactly like what they look like when they are born

where as there was nothing on this scan but 3 white lines

AggiePanther · 28/02/2006 17:36

Soupdragon ..I thought it was the other way around ..that testicles could look like labia ..if they scan from underneath? Although I guess if it works one way then it'll work the other :)

muma3 · 28/02/2006 17:44

i have had 3 girls and at all three scans they said they cant be sure but they thought they were girls.
i believe that they can be more sure if the baby is a boy then they can be with a girl. (little willies or somethingGrin)
i would trust her as they were right for all 3 of mine they are just covering there arses Smile

ps. if the baby is a boy please dont come looking for me Grin

muma3 · 28/02/2006 17:47

oh and the way she put it was
"looks like a hat-trick Shock"
dd1&dd2 arent my partners but we didnt say anything Grin

Dunnyjo · 28/02/2006 18:33

When she showed us on the screen it looked realy realy long, (did not look right)maybe i was looking at it worng then lol. But even now i still feel its agirl...

However i am not off out to buy any stuff yet. If a boy then i will be using my sons clothes as he has so many. Plus they still look good as new.

AggiePanther · 28/02/2006 18:47

Maybe you were looking at the right thing DunnyJo and he's going to be ..er...gifted Shock

izzybiz · 28/02/2006 20:23

sniff,
i saw three white lines on my scan too, looks like a hamburger i was told!
i had a girl!

AggiePanther · 28/02/2006 21:01

Was just wondering from your comments ...were you all shown the 'bits' ? My sonographer showed me the heart, the kidneys, hands, feet etc but didn't show me anything between the legs...she didnt talk about the gender till she'd put down the scanning thingy and finished

Mum2OneAndOneMore · 28/02/2006 21:03

I was told 85% sure i went & brought pink & they were right cause i have a 6 week old beautiful baby girl Smile

Mum2OneAndOneMore · 28/02/2006 21:04

I was never shown "the bits" she told me once she had switched off the screen.

KristinaM · 28/02/2006 21:09

no no no do NOT trust scans. They are not reliable for sex of the baby. thats one reason some hospitals wont tell you the sex.AFAIK its more reliable if they think its a boy, because they have probably seen the scrotal sac. If they dont see anything it coudl be a girl.or a boy with his legs crossed.

You shouldnt buy lots of stuff anyway as you get so many gifts Smile And if you buy unisex coloured stuff it will do for your subsequent children. I mean big stuff like buggies, car seats, cots etc

Nbg · 28/02/2006 21:32

The hospital I was at with dd, didn't tell the sex so we paid for a private scan at 26 weeks.

The guy that did the scan said he was 99% sure it was a girl and that he had never in his whole career said that and probably never would again. That was the only reason we went out and bought girls things.

I'm going to find out what we're having at our next scan but regardless I'm only buying neutral colours and sleepsuits only, no outfits!
