katia welcome to the thread. You'll be able to join right in as we start the countdown to the first of the 20 week scans!

Beccus · 08/05/2012 21:54

Welcome Katla and Shallwedance.
Midgetm and Katla, i had an 8am 12 week scan - bean was awake and wriggling about, but in the wrong position for the ultrasound lady to see what she wanted to see, so she kept getting me to roll from side to side to tip him/her over, which i thought was hilarious. Poor Bean, just like a pancake, getting flipped about in there.
Glad to see everyone else is just as confused about prams and as horrrifed by the price as I am....not that i fully know the difference between a pram, push chair or travel system....But anyway, they are kind of like cars, or at least i think i can convince b/f of this, so i hope he can help me figure them out....

smileyhappymummy · 08/05/2012 22:56

We bought a travel system type thing last time around. It was rubbish. It was too big, I couldn't pick it up / even push it really thanks to c section scar. It wouldn't fit in the boot unless completely dismantled - and we didn't have a tiny car. Dd wouldn't go in the carrycot thing that turned it into a pram at all - screamed blue murder until removed. Biggest waste of money ever. Sling was a far far better (and cheaper) buy. We did also end up getting a cheap umbrella fold type pushchair which we did use (ultimately it broke but we probably did get our money's worth out of it first). This time it will be sling - possibly plus a stroller suitable from birth. Much cheaper.
Failed miserably to find any maternity smart trousers yesterday at the shops. Have ordered some stuff from debenhams on the basis that they do free delivery and free returns so nothing to lose. I have a job interview on Thursdqy next week so hopefully something will fit! Should be a fun interview.... They don't yet know I'm pregnant but planning to tell them at the end of the interview as I want to be honest with them. hope it doesn't go down toooo badly but in a way works out better for them than if I got pregnant in 6 months time - at least this way they aren't having to give me any maternity pay. Still, am additionally nervous about that bit of it.
Anyway, off to bed now, no wonder I,m tired, I stay up too late!

CWest30 · 09/05/2012 08:33

Well I'm about to ring the drs, took 1 high blood pressure tablet yesterday lunchtime and within hrs had the worst headache ever and was throwing up. Phoned drs then and they said see how I was overnight and phone again this morning. So I basically went straight to bed after work, been sick 4 times overnight and once this morning (although that could be MS?) I haven't took another pill, too scared of it coming back, will just go and get checked out instead. Hoping they don't send me to hosp as iv got no childcare for my 4 yr old, but what will be will be I guess. Will keep u posted x

londonlivvy · 09/05/2012 12:07

oh cripes Cwest that does not sound fun. What did the docs say? Hope they've found a reason and solved it. I'm feeling shocking today but nothing compared to that!

Good luck.

HaggisNeepsTatties · 09/05/2012 14:10

Cwest that sounds horrid. Hope you manage to get it sorted out and is nothing too serious

Londonmrss · 09/05/2012 15:39

Hope you feel better Cwest. Get lots of rest.

I have a really dopey question for the people who've already had babies, or who just know more than me...

I'm currently making my lists of what I need to buy. I?m confused about what babies sleep in. Someone told me I should swaddle to begin with (like the idea, looks cosy) and then I read lots of people start with just sheets and cellular blankets. Does this mean they use swaddling and then sheets over the top? Does the baby wear clothes under swaddling? And what about sleeping bags? Baby Centre has this nice page: www.babycentre.co.uk/baby/buyingforbaby/cotscribsbedding/bedding/ but I?m still not clear.
We?re planning to start with a moses basket.

I'm only 15 + 5, but I like making lists... Makes me feel like I know what I'm doing.

Thanks!

WantAnOrange · 09/05/2012 19:02

Londonmrss I used to swaddle DS with a cellular blanket. He wore a vest and babygrow underneath in winter. Then when he got to about 6 months we started using a growbag.

Really, it's up to you though and finding out what your baby likes. There are no rules.

HTH

lisbethsopposite · 09/05/2012 19:32

Londonmrss I've been through it once but it's amazing what you forget.
I did swaddle at the start, I forget when I went to sleeping bags, but you are advised. Apparently sleep bags are not suitable for newborns (pity).
Depending on the weather baby may have vest and PJs on, and you can swaddle with a sheet or blanket. When I had baby in sleep bag I used to have him in these Miss. Marple like bed cardigans. We will have babies across the winter and it is not recommended to have the room heated too much so we will probably be using the warmer options.
Sleep bags are fabulous, the mid wife will let you know when you can start.
Oh yes, I remember tucking swaddled baby under a tucked in sheet to keep them in 1 position.
And Cot bumpers were a big no no. They restrict air circulation for small babies and are a climbing aid for bigger babies.
I never had those fleecy blankets. My logic was would I like my baby's face stuffed into this. That's why it's all about cellular blankets - but I did have some knitted cotton ones later on. You have to think that anything you put into a baby's cot could end up covering their face.

Sorry for anyone not feeling well.
Cwest Thanks

Midgetm · 09/05/2012 20:47

Hope you are feeling better cwest

Beccus · 09/05/2012 20:58

CWest, hope u r feeling better.
Londonmrs, i am confused about sleeping, too. Thanks to mummies WantAnOrange and libethoppositefor their advice. Does anyone know if there are portable sleeping things, say if you are watching tv with baby in the lounge and then he gets sleepy, could he stay with you in his portable sleeping thingy and then could you carry him about with you, eg, if you want to go in the kitchen, while he naps. I initially thought you could carry them about in a moses basket, but then read that you shouldnt carry the baby about in them as the handles might break....or is it better to pop baby in his nightime bed everytime he gets sleepy?

WantAnOrange · 10/05/2012 07:30

Beccus I had a cot upstairs, a Moses basket in the lounge and a bouncer in the kitchen. He slept anywhere for the first couple months. When he grew out of the moses basket, he was also in a better routine so he had naps in the cot.

You can leave your baby sleeping in the lounge while you pop into the kitchen, no problem.

If you've got a velcro baby that won't sleep anywhere but your arms, then a sling is a good way to go.

HTH.

bella2012 · 10/05/2012 07:50

I found our relatively cheap travel system really useful. It was great to have the carry cot/pram thing at first because the wee bed doubled as another moses basket so that baby could be lifted in and out of the pram if he fell asleep on a walk. (walking is such a lifesaver!) had nice strong handles, although I admit I used to move baby round the house with me in moses basket too. Handles on that seemed strong enough but maybe that wasn't wise. The car seat on the travel system was great too for the same reason- if baby fell asleep in car I could just clip the car seat straight into the buggy when I arrived which meant that I didn't have to wake him up. We still use the pushchair bit of it now on a long walk even though DS is 2 and a half. Once he gets tired he wants to be carried and I really cant oblige at the minute. All my back pains from the last pregnancy have come back and I keep getting ligament pain in the bump. The midwife said that basically my muscles are shot to bits after last time and are feeling the strain! I admit, I have not been very good at keeping up with an exercize routine since DS came on the scene!

I teach drama and I have my a-level performance tonight which we have been working really hard on so am very nervous! But going to try and enjoy my day off with DS. I have missed him so much this week! Last night he told me that if the baby was a boy he wanted to call him Moosey and if it was a girl, he wanted to call her Bimps! So that's the names sorted...!

CWest- I hope you are ok! And all others still suffering with MS. i hipe so much it soon lifts for you, what a miserable time that is.

So jealous of all of you buying lovely clothes! We are skint this month so am going to have to wait a while and manage with the tops I have. I just wish it would warm up because all the mat clothes I have are very summery.

Hope you are all well today!

Cant remember what I put here- age 29 DC 2 17 weeks, DD 18th October

bella2012 · 10/05/2012 07:53

sorry for typos. Our computer is out of action and I don't dare update at work so I am on my phone, hence why I don't post very often xx

MrsConfusion · 10/05/2012 08:18

Hope you're feeling better CWest and docs have sorted things out.
I finally bit the bullet yesterday and got re-measured in M&S, gone up two cup sizes (so far!!). Never been a big busted lady so it's all quite a novelty Blush but now have 3 bras which are right size, not-wired and are padded (needed to stop me taking people's eyeballs out with nips - they're fairly 'enthusiastic' even when not pregnant...)M phew!
However on the same shopping trip I discovered that all the places I was planning to try for mat trousers have closed down or stopped doing maternity wear, argh!
Haven't even started thinking about prams etc yet, all too complex and scary. Maybe after 20 week scan I can kick myself into some decisions...

Beccus · 10/05/2012 09:06

Thx for advice, WantanOrange and bella2012
bella2012, i am due same day :) Bet yours comes before mine as it is my 1st and your 2nd.
Have 2nd festy cold in a week, so have taken day off to recover. B/F is working from home, so i have a urse to look after me :)

Smorgs · 10/05/2012 17:27

Well I don't know about anyone else, but my day started with a virtual stranger sticking her finger up my fanjo and having a good root around while trying to find my cervix.

That was a surprise I can tell you. Apparently 'internal examinations' are the thing in France from month 4. Wish someone had warned me about that one.

I did a long post last week but Mumsnet logged me out before I could post it up and I'm afraid I couldn't face writing it all again. Will have a read through now and catch up a bit.

Smorgs · 10/05/2012 17:39

MickeyTheShortOne Totally confused about buggies/travel systems too. Why aren't they just called prams anymore? I sent DH off this weekend to do research in John Lewis and he came back with a spreadsheet working out cost v benefits of each one, bless.

londonlivvy lots of friends have recommended Phil and Teds to me, and said they are great if you're ever thinking about having a second as easy to adapt (we kind of are, but I still can't get my head round the fact we're having one yet).

SmileyHappyMummy Very interesting you say your old travel system was too big. Do you mind me asking what one it was? I 'road-tested' my friends Phil and Teds this weekend and I was surprised how big and a bit heavy it was. We haven't got a car, but are going to be getting one so I will have to know if it can take the buggy.

LondonMrsS I am literally writing my lists now! Love it. Gives me a sense of control in a world full of madness. They keep you in hospital for days over here, so my hospital bag is going to look like I'm off to the beach for a fortnight!

MrsConfusion I am having loads of trouble sleeping. Think it's my bladder feeling full every 4 hours perhaps. And I can't sleep on my front anymore, which is my normal sleeping position.

DameFlatYouLent Sorry to hear the tiredness has hit again. I was relishing the fact that not drinking seems to give me loads more energy and was bragging to friends on a hen night this weekend that I've been out clubbing until 2.30am recently. Then, I promptly felt exhausted by 10.30pm and had to go home early Blush

GucciGirl I would try and do some research on the usual prices for second hand prams online and then see if your friend is charging the going rate. Over here they are so cheeky with what they charge for second hand stuff. I saw a 2nd hand pram advertised for sale online which looked nice but was pricey and then checked out how much it would be in England - less than what they were charging for 2nd hand!

WantAnOrange Totes with you on the back pain, my lower back is in agony if I'm standing for too long. Which at the moment is about 30mins. Brew

Smorgs · 10/05/2012 17:42

PS is anyone else just ravenous all the time? I keep waking up at 5am because my stomach is growling. Trying to resist the urge to graze all day long, but it's soooo hard :-(

Doodlekitty · 10/05/2012 17:42

Hi guys!

New to the thread as my date was changed at my 12 week scan. Now due 26th Oct. just been referred to consultant care due to a high BMI and have my app tomorrow. I also start a new job on Monday so it's all go here!

Squigglywiggly · 10/05/2012 18:00

Hello! I'm due the 17th with my second. An considering having a home birth? Is anyone else!

Hope everyone is feeling better now we are into 2nd trimester!

londonlivvy · 10/05/2012 18:47

Hi everyone,

I've been a misery guts recently - the DF is not impressed and is running out of sympathy I suspect. I have been doing much whingeing about nausea and about the mastitis which, despite 5 days of antibiotics seems to still be around - but very intermittently. Odd. So yesterday daytime fine, last night 2 hours of agony, today absolutely fine. I may have to go back to the doc. sigh. Antibots have also made me even more tired and have given me thrush too. joy. OH and I've had three (bike) punctures in two days. Angry

I am very impressed by anyone who's got the energy to write lists (LondonMrsS in particular) as with the flat sales / house purchase / retraining for a new career / evil mastitis, I've not had much spare mojo to think about what comes at the end of all this!

Welcome new folks *WAVES. And I'm not always this much of a moaner. honest!

Thanks Smorgs for the positive thinking re our free Phil & Teds buggy. We are definitely thinking of 2 kids but we'll see whether life takes us that way. It is pretty big though, if I remember right, but I mainly hope to be using it around the village.

I imagine myself doing country walks with a sling if I can get my head round all the options. Slings seem to be a bit contentious. Some folk say baby bijorn type are bad for hips and slings better and others say the opposite. How on earth are you supposed to know the truth?

WantAnOrange · 10/05/2012 19:19

Squigglywiggly I would like to have home birth too!

lisbethsopposite · 10/05/2012 19:21

Londonlivvy while I was breast feeding the mid wives told me to use warm compresses and massages for mastititis - could you have a blocked duct?

DameFlatYouLent · 10/05/2012 19:54

Hi squiggly I'm also planning a homebirth with number 2 (after an unplanned and frankly terrifying unplanned homebirth with number 1)

Hi everyone else, I'm utterly shagged after a manic day at work on my feet all day. My uterus is still really low and it seems to be pushing everything else up - I have this big bump which is not baby and nor is it fat. It looks well peculiar. Today I saw my first kick from the outside though! Right where my bladder should be Confused and where there's no bump Confused Confused

CWest hope you're feeling better!

Smorgs yikes, internals seem unnecessary!! Deeply unpleasant!

To all those looking at buggies, I second all those who say not to bother with travel systems. But then my DS hated the "pram" attachment and screeched constantly when in it. I'm getting a double buggy (hoping for mountain buggy duet if we can find one on ebay) but plan to sling as much as possible. Am expecting another velcro baby, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised Hmm ha

londonlivvy hope things get better soon. Mastitis now is just jeffing unfair Sad Lots of unblocked-duct vibes your way...!

Time for more Britain's Got Talen (saddo emoticon)
