Fjord just want to echo the others' comments, you are doing really well and handling the family situation perfectly! Your DP is lucky to have someone like you. LOL at the dog.... what fickle kids!

Oh and re the eejit age comments, firstly people are morons, secondly the inappropriate judgment comes at all ages! The most common comment I have got from colleagues and work contacts (including people I hardly see and barely know!!) after congrats is "was it planned?" And when I say "errr yes" with a Hmm look on my face they say something like "oh it's just that you're so young, I wasn't sure!" FFS I'm 27, not 15! And how the planned or unplanned status of my pregnancy is relevant to them, I'll never know...!

Bah annoyed that I've woken up early on a weekend! Craving some poached eggs on buttery toast. They will be runny because pregnancy or not I cannot do without yellow lovely oozy eggs! Grin

YompingJo · 21/04/2012 07:29

Ooh, jumping on the runny eggs bandwagon, have woken up wanting dippy eggs and soldiers! Got some errands to do first but breakfast is going to be lush!

I have gone public at work this week, newsletter went home to parents (parents of children at school, not to my parents, that would be a bit formal, lol) and have told my class, so we finally put the scan photo on Facebook last night and are excitedly checking to see what everybody has said every few hours (yes, the world does revolve round us! Hmm). It's nice not to have to hide it, but I still feel fat rather than pregnant and am still subconsciously sucking my belly in instead of letting it show. When I let it show it's terrifying, seems to have gone from a bit podgy 2 weeks ago to "blimey it's a proper bump".

Maternity clothes shopping today, gulp. No clue what to get or what's out there.

Thanks for info re reusable nappies, they sound like a good compromise between washable and disposable.

Have a good day everyone.

Kyyria · 21/04/2012 07:54

Well, I've been up since 6:30am - have got a new coffee table being delivered at some point between 7am and 12 noon - I'm betting it will arrive at 11:59am!! Smile

Think the hormones have started kicking in - ordered food shopping on-line for delivery on Monday. Was nearly in tears putting the eggs away - all I could think was "these could be babies"... Confused

Mad Psycho b*tch from hell Office Gossip has been a right pain this week. Trying not to let her bother me. In the last few days I think she's told more people I'm pregnant than I have!! So many people coming up to me saying "Carol was just telling me that you're expecting"... I think it's quite sad that the only way she can get he kicks in life are by living through other people.

One of the other girls in the office has just found out she's pregnant (couple of weeks behind me) and has mentioned it to a few select people (including office gossip) but it hasn't been announced officially. Office Gossip has spent the last few days questioning various members of staff to find out who they knew that knew (if that makes sense) and when that was...she's unbelievable.

I've promised myself I'm not going to talk about the pregnancy/child with her around - refuse to give her the satisfaction of having the information. Some people just make your blood boil Angry

Have decided to get my head down as I've got coursework deadlines looming and figured I might as well make a start on things whilst I'm up so early. Don't really have the energy but it needs to be done!

Hope you all have a fab weekend Grin

CWest30 · 21/04/2012 09:10

I think I may be the last member to have my 12 week scan, its not til 30 April, I should be 12+4 then. Am on this thread because I already know I will have to have a c section at 34 weeks ( due to pre existing medical condition ) which should be beginning of october.

Someone mentioned Vitamin D? My midwife also said I should be taking this...I didnt have to 4 yrs ago with my son but always do as I am told! Oh and forgot midwife appt yesterday, oops. Been rebooked for 4 May, MUST REMEMBER IT!!

Have a good weekend ladies :) x

squidkid · 21/04/2012 09:31

I just ate a lovely runny boiled egg too! And I am having half a glass of wine twice a week now, oh well!

Yomping I found it really weird when I mentioned it on facebook, I didn't post a scan picture or anything, I posted some pictures of my big hike and gave it the title "60 miles, 4 days, 14 weeks pregnant!" and ... wow, I was quite surprised at how excited and lovely everyone was (I have a relatively small facebook list, 100-odd people, and only people I know pretty well, I'm a bit careful about it due to working with the public). I mean I had told my closest friends and some family before that. I haven't told my new job yet- a couple of people know.

I still don't feel like I look pregnant at all, just a bit podgier in tightly fitted clothes. I know I say this every time I come on here, but I was really expecting to look a bit more pregnant by now!

Zara I'm getting the "was it planned??!" shocked comments too, not cause I'm young, but because I'm a doctor and apparently we should all be 40 year consultants with secure jobs for life before we even consider doing anything that isn't medicine, let alone having a WHOLE YEAR OUT (gasp!) In fact lots of doctors I've told have assumed I'll be going back to work at 3-4 months and putting baby in a nursery! Now I have nothing against nurseries and some women don't have the option of not going back to work, but I do, and there's no WAY I'm rushing back to work at 3 months! Sorry that was a bit of a tangent...

Fjordmor I had to laugh about the dog. I'm glad things are at least a wee bit calmer for you.

londonlivvy - big smiles, so happy to hear the good news.

Kyrria oh my god your office gossip has a very empty life. Poor thing.

I've got some portfolio/job related stuff to do but not too much and am going to go for lunch with the boy, going over to a mate's for dinner, out to see her boyfriend's band afterwards, for a walk tomorrow (if it's not torrential rain) and maybe this food festival in the peaks to catch up with some mates... do you think I'll manage half of that or shall I just go back to bed now with the cat, haha!

bella2012 · 21/04/2012 10:29

morning chums!

So glad to hear more happy scan news! We def need a virtual celebration party once we are all through that hurdle! Plenty of virtual wine and canapes all round... Prawns, pate on crackers, brie cheese etc!

My thoughts on the age issue is that it has to be the month it is, whenever that falls in your life, or it wouldn't be that particular baby. My ds was a bit of a happy accident. We hadn't quite been married a year, had no savings and didnt own our house but I knew it was the right time regardless, because it is HIM. This amazing little individual. And this time, when it took a little while to happen, I just thought, we have to wait for the right month for our particular bean to show up. So I don't think it matters when you have children as long as you are up for the challenge!

In other news, is anyone suffering from headaches? I am really struggling. I got through the last pg without taking anything but have had to take some paracetamol this morning as it has gone on for about 15 hours. Apparently it could be to do with pregnancy hormones or something.

My dh has had a couple of days off in payback for some additional time he is doing so we are having such a nice time all together. It was a rare treat to be able to do the mammoth monthly shop on my own without entertaining ds all the way round with trolly wheelies! I am making a box full of supermarket stuff that won't go off like washing powder, shampoo etc for those dark maternity leave months when I won't be earning anything. it is quite exciting putting it all together especially buying a stockpile of teeny nappies!

Apparently it is a national trust free weekend so we are off to a brill attraction with an amazing adventure playground. Ds will be in heaven.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Age 29 dc2 14+3 due date 18th oct

Angelico · 21/04/2012 11:22

Morning lay-deeeeees :) Runny egg - why does it sound so good at the minute? Was desperate for some but we are meeting friends for lunch so no big brekkie. Had toasted crumpet with mature cheddar and sundried tomato. It was half nice and half vile, if that makes sense?!

Beeble I'm not posting any photos yet - feel a) superstitious and b) slightly freaked by the bean's amazingly long, skeletal legs! :o

Fjord glad they have all been distracted by a dog...! lol The fickleness of teens indeed! :o

Squid that whole docs delaying babies thing sounds about right :) Friends are docs - they are a couple - and wife delayed having bean as long as possible as a consultant was rumoured to be retiring - then he didn't and she thought, "Oh fuck it!" and had a baby :) Interestingly she was determined to have an elective section rather than VB and I thought - does she know some doctor thing that we don't?! She said her doc friends were the same - all wanted sections, rather than tattered lady gardens etc.

Bella that's a nice way of looking at it - that your bean is one particular bean that has its moment :) Headaches, I've read that too and had one yesterday but that's the first (hopefully last). I do get 'low pressure' headaches when it's humid and thundery and it was a bit like that yesterday when I was at work - maybe it was the same where you live?

Now 2 questions lovely peeps:

  1. How much Vit D are you supposed to take and what is it supposed to be for? I know one of you was in a trial or something?

  2. Are any of you getting hip pain when you are lying in bed? Really cross this morning, anticipating lovely lie in and woke up with right hip hurting badly. Still hurting a bit while I hobble round but more pain from lying on it. Why does this happen in pregnancy?! Read some stuff there about people sleeping with a pillow between their knees but that sounds v uncomfortable!

Have a lovely day! x

Angelico Doctors don't "know things" other people don't, it's just a profession that seems to mostly attract a certain personality type (anxious, controlling, perfectionist, OCD etc) and I think that personality type leans more towards conceiving to schedule, delivering on schedule, everything as controlled as possible, planning your whole life in advance. As someone who lives in chaos and went to med school on a whim when I was 25 I find it very hard to relate to to be honest... I'm mates with some docs who are great, but my closest mates are ... teachers and midwives and florists and children's book illustrators and magazine journalists and academics and run their own businesses and builders and manage ice hockey teams and diving instructors and work for charities and in coffee shops and pubs. Or are unemployed. Doctors are a bit weird, really.

I mean there are lots of doctors who are not like that, but that is the trend I've observed.

Vitamin D is cause we're all sun deficient in this country (no shit!) - it's supposed to be 10ug a day, to protect our bones. It's a new recommendation.

Kyyria · 21/04/2012 11:59

Angelico - I have to say I agree with Squidkid. I've worked in the NHS for 11 years, all of them in General Practice.

Doctors are generally very lovely people but they do tend to come down in the highly anxious/controlling/OCD camp! We have jokes at work because so many of the GPs have to rearrange the tea towels in the staff room so that the checked print on them lines up!! Confused Grin

You will occasionally get the outliers (extremely unorganised, so laid back they're horizontal) but they are few and far between.

On the knowledge front there are so many clinical updates and changes to practice each and every week that they simply cannot keep up with all of them. Generally if it's something to do with maternity/child health they would expect the midwives/health visitors to be up to speed and therefore would go to them if they had any pressing questions.

Beeblebear · 21/04/2012 15:21

Bella, I have a killer headache for the second weekend in a row. Last week was 3 days. Taking tylenol but doesn't help much. Think i'm going to crawl back in bed. 8 am here, and hopefully be up in a couple hours so that I can enjoy the lovely weather we are supposed to have today.

Hips- yes mine have been hurting. In particular my left sacroilliac joint. Been focusimg on my pelvic tilt while walking, trying to keep level and not tipped forward amd seems to be helping. I also got a body pillow tosnuggle last nibht, but ut ended up on the floor.

Congrats to those sharing tne news. I specifically told one iffice gossip (after I told the main important people) so that I wouldn't have to tell like 175 poeople. It does get awkward telling after a while. The rest will have to wait until they clue in about the bump. Lol

Squid- so glad ypu stuck up for yourself and finally found someone to listen! And I keep getting the opposite thoughts/comments about bump. Eberyone is so surprised i'm showing already. Makes me fret about other things like a twin missed at scan, or fibroids, or too much amniotic fluid from drinking lots of water... We are never worry free are we!?!?

My memory isn't good enough for name checks and on my phone so hi to everyone else and hope all is well.

Ps I think it's a vit funny that we are willing to talk freely about cm smell, texture and frequency, but afraid to post belly pictures. I think it would just prove that we all come in different shapes and sizes and that everyone shows differently. ( i'm probably going to get slapped for this one for being on the slim side and commenting on body image, but oh well)

DameFlatYouLent · 21/04/2012 15:27

Afternoon all, and thank goodness it's the weekend - I'm knackered! Still up to wee twice a night (15+4), DS is going through a bad sleeping patch, and I had to cover for work yesterday at an unfamiliar site alone. It was a loooong stressful day, with the most unrealistic number of patients to see Sad Because I was in such a hurry I didn't read one man's notes properly and was exposed to shingles. I had a proper panic but the nice people at infection control set my mind at rest - I just hope they're right. Sorry to ask, squidkid, but if I've had chickenpox before does it mean that I'm safe to be around people with shingles? Pregnancy hormones seriously kicked in though - I rushed off the ward in tears and sat in the toilet for a good 10 minutes having a quiet boo hoo. The stress of the day contributed I think!

Fjordmor are you going to get a dog, then? We'd love to have a dog but I've told DH that I can't cope with babies and puppies at the same time (I might get confused when potty training DS and put a nappy on the puppy and sling DS outside!!) I think we'll wait until the kids are old enough to ask for a puppy and think we're the best parents ever for giving them one! And then moan constantly when I nag them to walk it Grin I won't be walking it!! (famous last words)

Angelico I get hip pain in bed when pg. Currently masked by bladder pain most of the time. It's crap though, sympathy.

Got a dress from JoJoMamanBebe delivered online (mumsnet offer, 10% off online shopping) for a wedding i'm going to, and it looks like a big sack on me Sad And I can't return in store, and have to pay for the postage of the return! Damn it. Back to square one with the wedding dress shopping...

Bladder calling. As usual. Have a lovely Saturday afternoon all!

Beeblebear · 21/04/2012 15:33

Oh and on the runny egg front...i've eaten slightly runny eggs a few times now. I think we are over cautious on those things here in north america.

Best before dates are rediculous. Told to throw away if left unrefrigerated for over an hour..in australia, eggs are not even kept in the fridge in the market. They are on the shelf by the cerial or something like that. And they all seem to be fine. Lol

So in short... Enjoyyour runny eggs ladies!

WantAnOrange · 21/04/2012 16:27

Good afternoon Smile

I have been to an NCT sale this morning and got lots of lovely bargains. Got a set of Mothercare Smart Nappies for £7.50! and a Grow Bag for 50p!!! Also got lots of vests and babygrows.

RE runny eggs, I am hopeless at sticking to the 'rules'. I am having half a glass of wine and week too. I think common sense and moderation is better than worrying and denying ourselves. Plus, if you buy Lion stamped eggs, they've been vaccinated anyway (the chickens not the eggs!).

WantAnOrange · 21/04/2012 16:28

Oh and I don't keep eggs in the fridge wierdos. Grin

FjordMor · 21/04/2012 16:43

Zara1984 -thank you! :) x I don't feel like I'm handling things well sometimes.

Jealous of everyone's runny eggs; I wussed out this morning after being inspired by you all and flipped them over - but then I'm going through an irrational anxious phase...

Re the vitamin D - a friend gave me Santogen 'mum to be' or something multi vits that are meant for throughout pregnancy too. They have vit D, folic acid, iron etc. Was going to stop taking them but it's an easy way to get vit D so since my diet's really good, I'm taking one of them every other day. My old GP also recommended it & let's face it, I won't get much by way of sunlight here! The vit D dose in them is 10ug.

bella - I agree with you actually on the 'fate' thing and babies. Weirdly I was told by both a psychic & an astrologer when I was still at uni that I wouldn't meet the love of my life or start a family until 'much later on' - nearer 40 (and that I would have 2) and at the time I scoffed as it didn't suit what I wanted or expected then. As I've got older I've always felt a bit 'que sera sera' about it. I waited patiently (well, not that patiently Wink) for the 'man for me' to come along, and he did, at 39 and just when I needed him most. Life's a bit like that I always feel. It will happen when it will happen. You can try to help it along but it will happen when it's supposed to, whether that suits you or not.

Angelico - I had hip pain in bed early in the 1st trim. I get it occasionally now but not so much in bed as when walking around. I'm sure it's pelvic/ligament stretching stuff. I found a special pillow helpful.

Re the dog thing, yes Dame - plan had been (when we thought it would take ages to concieve) that we get a puppy then it would be old enough & trained up by the time a baby came. I researched the baby/dog thing & which way is best. DP & I agree we don't think we can cope with both at once but I'm going to look into how long after baby is here might be a good interval to get one as we promised and were planning on it. I'm leaning towards getting one a few months before baby is crawling to allow for training and acclimatisation time but I'll have to look into other's experience & advice. I'm experienced with dogs & puppies but never with young children of my own (obvs) so will defer to the wisdom of greater experience.

What's a 'grow bag' WantanOrange? Is it like a 'sleeping bag' thing?

DameFlatYouLent · 21/04/2012 18:56

Fjordmor grobags are brilliant inventions that help you (oh and your baby Wink) get more sleep! - yes, sleeping bag things. Definitely worth having, as babies are physically incapable of keeping blankets on.

OctoberOctober · 21/04/2012 18:59

Been shopping today and was about to give up with local branch of Next and H&M having no maternity section, plus Gap being pretty poor then happened to go in Jo Jo Maman and actually found some decent stuff and bought 4 things! Feeling pleased to have some clothes that will fit!

WantAnOrange · 21/04/2012 19:31

Yep Grow bags are basically baby sleeping bags. I wouldn't use for a newborn because I would swaddle but great when they get to about 4 months.

HaggisNeepsTatties · 21/04/2012 22:21

Hi everyone.

bella I'm suffering from headaches too but have resisted taking anything for it yet

angelico good luck with finding a dress for the wedding. I got a beautiful Tiffany Rose one delivered yesterday. They're quite expensive but as I've got three weddings to go to this summer I figured I'd rather make the investment! You might be able to pick up something nice on ebay (Isabella Oliver also does some lovely ones) or for non maternity I saw some lovely maxi dresses in Monsoon today that might do the job?

OctoberOctober I did exactly the same. Went out to buy maternity stuff and most of the shops don't keep any stock - it's all online which is stupid! If ever there was a time I wanted to be able to try stuff on before buying! I ended up getting a couple of things from JoJo Maman as well. I also bought quite a bit from white stuff which has some lovely stretchy empire line dresses...I've been in a couple of different white stuff shops over the last few weeks, and both times there was a heavily pregnant sales assistant who was wearing one of their own dresses so I reckon they'll keep me going for a while.

Have ordered a maternity swimming costume from Boden today as just not feeling comfortable in my bikini anymore!

One of the things I am struggling to find is a decent spring/summer coat or jacket that will be able to see me all the way through...anyone managed to find anything good?

Hope everyone is well!

HaggisNeepsTatties · 21/04/2012 22:23

Sorry Dame got you and Angelico mixed up above! Baby brain!

HaggisNeepsTatties · 21/04/2012 22:25

Oh - and in other news got my Theraline pillow delivered yesterday. Had a great night's sleep! And angelico I find sleeping with a pillow between my knees really comfortable (in fact can't sleep on my side without one) and does help with hip pain. I know everyone's different but may be worth giving it a try if you're suffering!

OctoberOctober · 21/04/2012 23:28

HaggisNeepsTatties- will check out White Stuff too, hadn't thought to look there. Smiled when I saw your nickname as shopping this weekend has been done on weekend away in Edinburgh.

Angelico · 21/04/2012 23:40

Evening all :)

Squid and Kyrria that is really interesting about the doc personality thing - makes sense I suppose. I think most docs are so good at appearing maddeningly calm to the public that we forget they may be quivering wrecks inside :o Kyrria - the teatowel straightening really made me laugh - those poor GP's would walk into our staffroom and fall down dead :o (And Squid - your friends sound lovely, especially those teachers Wink)

beeble - I must confess I mis-read your post and thought you were asking about photos of the beans (ie ultrasounds) lol! My tum is already getting huge so may get some photos to show the bean when it is an ungrateful teenager ("Look what you did to me teen fiend!!! And now you're wrecking the house / eating me out of house and home / leaving your undies all over the place!" - delete as appropriate).

Haggis - I bet your dress is gorgeous! Must have a peek myself! :) I got a cheapie but nice one in New Look - purple and only about twenty quid.

Sympathy to all hip and back ache peeps at the minute and thanks for tips. My hip was sore all morning and my back and sides are really sore tonight! Think it was because we went shopping today and wandered round, stood about, tried on clothes etc. On plus side - got some nice clothes in H&M, maternity bra and big long pillow thing in Mothercare. Hoping it helps with pain tonight :( I really need to start doing the abdominal exercises - have been lazy and now I'm suffering :(

Was also googling weight stuff there as the back pain thing is worrying me about putting on lots of weight. Because my BMI is 31.5ish I can healthily gain between 11 and 20lbs. I'd actually like to gain no more than 15lbs as I think I'll feel bloody awful if I do! Eating pretty healthily and so far still only 4lbs more than pre-preg weight so on track. If anyone else is interested I found this website really useful. And anybody worrying about their weight for no reason please ignore this link!!! I thought it might be helpful for peeps like me who are overweight - in fact technically obese!!! Confused - already as no one has actually given me any advice about how much weight to gain or lose.

Anyway here's to painless nights of lovely sleep for all :) x

londonlivvy · 22/04/2012 07:48

Hello everyone,

Just a quick visit - on a course all weekend - I finally told my parents yesterday. I told my mother and there was a VERY long pause (like 3 or 4 seconds) and then she said "I'll get your father". My father said "oh WELL DONE" and was suitably congratulatory. My mother (I think, based on previous conversations on the subject) is not impressed that we're not married yet. SIGH. I am trying to rise above it but honestly, would it have killed her to say congratluations???

And... I'm suffering from carpal tunnel. OUCH. Anyone else? I'm humming and haaing about whether to try accupuncture or someone else told me about Bowen technique (sounds like tosh to me but perhaps is more effective than I realise? sorry If I offend anyone).

DameFlat I had shingles a few years ago and was told that
a) it's very unlikely to transfer to anyone else
b) I could only "infect" someone who'd never had chicken pox.
Unfortunately that very week I had two meetings with people who (I found) had never had chicken pox. Oops. I didn't shake hands or anything and they were absolutely fine.
