My friends dd was born at 22 weeks and is now a happy healthy nearly 7 year old, so IMO it should be a lot earlier.

codnotmud · 29/01/2006 20:14

yes and more women want it reduced than men

huzzah

WideWebWitch · 29/01/2006 20:17

I should think most terminations carried out at 24 weeks are due to severe disability, it's unlikely they're routinely used for other reasons I'd have thought. So if they're reducing it I hope they're changing policy on abnormality scans too.

codnotmud · 29/01/2006 20:18

yes i read in dhs " statistics abotu britain " book that only about 30 abortions take palce at that time

hodl on will find it

No, I don't think it is 'long overdue'. I think the anti-abortionists are using people's distaste as a lever. Start by reducing the time limit and eventually, they hope, they will change opinion to the point where abortion becomes illegal. All surgical procedures are gross (try watching a hip replacement) but that's no reason why we should ban them.

Yes, there is very advanced care for premature babies. But it is not the case that 22 week old fetuses are all capable of being born alive. Most aren't, very sadly for those women with wanted pregnancies who miscarry.

Read a very good book recently called Policing Pregnancy by a woman who is a doctor and a lawyer and has researched attitudes to pregnancy (including abortion) among the medical and legal establishments in the US and the UK. Makes your hair curl. Give an inch to those who want to control women and you are creating an opportunity for things to get much, much worse.

chicagomum · 29/01/2006 20:22

I agree in part but,(and I've started another thread about this tonight)there are certain circumstances when it may be necessary to perform one later.

codnotmud · 29/01/2006 20:22

as an aside its a great book

WideWebWitch · 29/01/2006 20:26

codnotmud · 29/01/2006 20:28

not my book on facts?
sob

ShaysMummy · 29/01/2006 20:31

i dont think they should be banned, but i think there should only be certain circumstances when it is considered.
at the end of the day, most of us fully understand what sex results in don't we?

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 29/01/2006 20:32

Hmm shaysmummy and what would those circumstances be? And for all terminations or just late ones?

spacedonkey · 29/01/2006 20:33

late abortions already are carried out in only exceptional circumstances though aren't they?

ShaysMummy · 29/01/2006 20:37

if a woman is raped, and i know that would not be the babes fault, but how would you tell that babe how they came to be?
also when people are taken advantage of. people who dont fully understand it all.
what upsets me is the babies who are aborted because the mother 'didnt think she would get pregnant' or 'it was a one night stand, it wasnt meant to happen' 'i was drunk' etc etc.
but at the end of the day its their choice isnt it? think i should shut up!

OP posts:
ShaysMummy · 29/01/2006 20:38

its not a game i guess is what im trying to say. some people seem to see it that way.

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 29/01/2006 20:38

Dangerous territory imo shaysmummy.

ShaysMummy · 29/01/2006 20:40

yeah thats it. im done!!!
(stupid big mouth)

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 29/01/2006 20:44

Hmm, how do you know, to quote you 'it's not a game...some people see it that way?' Who does? What's your evidence? I really don't think women have terminations lightly. Happy to have a civilised discussion about it but obv, I do disagree with you!

ShaysMummy · 29/01/2006 20:51

some people ive read about in magazines in past. one girl for axample thought it was quite normal to have one!?

As mentioned above there relatively few abortions after 20 weeks; the large majority happen before 12 weeks.

Most of the 'late' ones are likely to be either people who have discovered serious anomalies at the 20 week scan, or desperate cases who haven't been able to seek help earlier, e.g. because they have mental health problems, didn't realise they were pregnant or are very young and have been hiding the pregnancy.
