Hi was just wondering what peoples experiences were with second labours?

Was yours faster & easier?

OR

Longer & harder?

I am starting to panic about going into labour i am a bit of a wimp can not even bear needles! My first labour was 16hrs not to bad, had all pain relief, epostomy (sp?) & few stitches I just keep having bad feelings about this second labour & it's making me very anxious now.

Please share all your different experiences with me TIA

Not done my second yet, but am due in 12 days time so will watch this with interest

coppertop · 02/01/2006 20:57

1st labour was 40hrs long. Ds1's shoulders got stuck at the end though so needed stitches and help to get him out.

2nd labour was 6hrs long. Once the epidural was in it was very easy. Shoulders got stuck again but the MW and doctors were prepared this time and so ds2 came out fairly easily.

Jasnem · 02/01/2006 20:58

My second was faster but not easier (although neither was "bad" or traumatic). First was 3hours from onset to delivery, second was 1.5 hrs from onset to 2nd stage, but I had to have a c section at this point, so it's difficult to say what may have happened.

I am now pregnant with my third, and slightly worried that this one will be faster still...

myturn · 02/01/2006 20:59

Of all 4 labours, the second was by far the quickest and easiest. I, too, definately felt more in control second time around and also found that coping with dd2 as a newborn was a breeze compared to dd1.

dinny · 02/01/2006 20:59

1st labour was 6 hours, 10 min 2nd stage - v intense and scary though.
2nd labour was about 4.5 hours, much more in control, less painful but longer 2nd stage as ds much bigger (and got stuck).

popsycalindisguise · 02/01/2006 20:59

yes and yes
although both were fast and easy
just ds2 was faster (25 mins!!!) and easier

Blossomhill · 02/01/2006 21:00

Well my first labour was long and ds took ages to be pushed out

My 2nd labour was much faster and the giving birth bit was extremely fast but I have to admit it was more intense and painful

Mum2OneAndBump · 02/01/2006 21:00

Hunker i only have 17 days the time is flying & i am getting more & more anxious as the days go on.......

Hearing about half-hour labours is scary! Was that from having no clue you were going to have the baby to cutting the cord?! I could have a baby before 9.30 if that's the case - EEK!

dinny · 02/01/2006 21:01

oh, no pain relief or tears for either, luckily.

Coppertop, ouch - had shoulder dystocia with ds too.

hunker - yes.....

Mum2OneAndBump · 02/01/2006 21:02

So is it true when they say 2nd babys always come faster than first? or is it an old wives tale?

M21AB, I know what you mean - I'm remembering giving birth in more detail than before! But I figure that I did it before, and I can do it again - am v worried about tearing again though.

hunkermunker · 02/01/2006 21:03

Bloody hell, Popsy! Bet your face looked like afterwards!

popsycalindisguise · 02/01/2006 21:04

I know what you mean i really don't want stitches that was the horrible bit for me also being cut but i would rather that than tear....

Somedays i feel really poitive & think i can do it & get excited & wish it would come now.. then others i sit & cry & think i don't know how i am going to get through this & that terrible things are going to happen.

I know its the fear of the unknown & no one can predict what will happen but i just hope someone will be watching over me & help me through...

My first was induced, 1 week late, my waters when at 11:35pm taken straight to labour ward, baby was back to back, epidural at 6am, syntocin drip to turn baby, epidural allowed to wear of 12:30pm (next afternoon), baby showing distress, epidural topped up, ventouse delivery, cord round baby's neck, baby arrived 2pm, 7lb15oz

No 2, sore back on due date, first contraction 4:30pm phoned hospital, told to stay at home unless very uncomfortable, had dinner finished dinner at 6pm left for hosptial, examined by midwife at 6:40pm was 7cm dilated with a "large baby", no pain relief baby arrived at 7:04pm 9lb1oz

I reckon spending the week before sitting on a birthing ball helped.

Nemo1977 · 02/01/2006 21:08

Both my labours were induced.
My first labour was 90mins quite easy and used entonox and diamorphine and had a fab time. Had grazing but no stitches etc but did get the dreaded piles. Took about 2 days to get over the birth.
Second was harder and longer[8hrs] but DD was popping in and out of being engaged and by time I was ready to deliver I had entonox taken from me due to throwing up about 20 times and diamorphine had worn off. However no grazing or piles and within 30mins felt normal down below etc. However do think I am in the minority.

tegan · 02/01/2006 21:08

Second was definately quicker. DD1 was a 22 hour back to back labour with 3rd degree tear and 12 stitches. DD2 was 2.5 hour labour and text book birth, 2nd degree tear but 1 stitch and was fine.
